I just turned 26 and I'm completing my Housemanship (Internship) in less than a month.
Since I resumed Clinical years (400 Lvl and Up) in Medical School, I had lost my enthusiasm for Medicine and somehow knew that being excellent at Clinical practice was going to be difficult for me.
I graduated with average grades, and in the course of my internship, I've just been an average doctor.
I know I can easily get by with private practice as a Medical Officer, and make enough to live a basic life but living an exceptional life would be hard in Medicine.
I keep talking about being exceptional because that's the kind of life I want. I had all distinction in my O Levels, and was also in top 10 students in my class before the Clinical years.
I was involved in a number of extracurricular activities in school (from Digital Technology Projects to NGOs, etc.) some of which had significant national impact.

I had thought about options like starting a Technology Startup, or doing a Post-Graduate Degree in the Basic Medical Sciences.
But I've noticed that I like taking on big and ambitious projects, and I also easily get bored.(I don't enjoy working on a project for more than 6 months). This makes technology startup difficult, and a post graduate degree in Nigeria might also not be exciting enough to hold my attention.

I started considering Management Consulting after watching tons of McKinsey, Bain & BCG videos on youtube. It feels like a sweet spot between liking to improve your intellectual vitality, working on big ambitious projects that you can immediately start seeing the impact, and being boredom proof since there would be multiple projects at once. I've also not been satisfied with my education in Nigeria so far and I'm hoping to take an MBA top 5 Business School. Management Consulting seems like a reasonable stepping stone to that.

So overall, I'm wondering;
How easy would it be to get into consulting with an average Academic Record?
What other areas of assessment can I improve to increase my chances of getting an offer?
What are the peculiarities of Management Consulting in Nigeria? How are things different from the 'oyinbo' videos I've been watching on youtube?
What are the salaries like? What salaries can I expect as a Business Analyst?

What aspect of Management Consulting do you want to go into? You did not waste your five or six years in Medical school. The are Medical Doctors who are business managers. I know Doctors manage HMOs and the likes. So you have a career path already. I will advise you start practising your profession as a Doctor, start studying for MBA and have your focus on being a corporate doctor rather than an "hospital" doctor. Search for vacancies that are in line with your career path and stay focused. You will get there. You can also follow Doctors who are on that path on LinkedIn. It will help.

It's still like a dream oooo!!! I still can't get over d feeling of excitement!! Just last month, I wrote a post here on Nairaland abt how hard it was to afford basic things for my kids... My God has put a new song in my mouth!!

It was on friday NIGHT, I got a mail notification, inviting me for an interview, within me, I was like 'which serious employer sends an interview invite at night?'... At abt 9pm, I got an SMS, that was when I actually started getting curious... I kept wondering if it was a mistake. On Sunday afternoon, I decided to check the place, to know if it was worth my time... When I got there, it happened to be a BIG place, I decided I wl gv it a try...

Monday morning, I went for the interview, we were four, put in d hall for the written interview, before the next stage... Guess what? My CV was there! With the interviewer, and they claim I submitted it! (How wld I submit CV to a place I do not even know??). At the end of the day, the HR lady said 'congrats'... I didn't want to raise my hopes unnecessarily.. I just said 'thank u'.....

Just dis morning, I was explaining to my kids, how they'll have to choose between a new pair of shoe, or a xmas dress, as I honestly couldn't afford both.... I decided to go charge my phone, by the time, I switched it on, it was another mail... MY LETTER OF APPOINTMENT!!!!

I 'm still dazed! I'm still in shock! I had thought 2016 has come n is abt 2 end without any tangible thing,,, but God showed me and has proven to me My case is differnt!!!

I called my daughter (6yrs), and told her abt it, she hugged me, and started crying,,, she said 'mum, at last u wld be able to pay our fees easily'... I didn't know when I started crying too.... I'm determined to gv d job my very best at least for d sake of my kids!

We should be careful with the way we give advice in a public forum. I attended an interview today without knowing the company name. I mean there was no company name in the mail sent to me. I called the number in the mail and the man told me they purposely didn't include the company name. I searched google for the address thinking a company name would come up, but nothing did. I checked the sender's profile on LinkedIn, he appeared credible.

So I went for the interview. It turned out to be a top level (C-level executive) recruitment and I was shortlisted for the final stage.

Dear poster, please check google for the address, do your due diligence, then based on your findings, decide whether you want to attend the interview or not.

I want to use this post to call out HR guys that recruit for companies. You announce a job, people send you their CVs and you do your selection. Now you invite people for the interview and even call to confirm they will attend. But when candidates asked which company you are you recruiting for, you won't answer.

I find this attitude really irritating. Why do I have to go there before knowing the name of the company? What am I expected to say when asked the regular interview questions like "what can you offer us" and "why are you here". I find this very unprofessional because this HR guys will expect you to start lying and offering things on the spot.

Now I'm talking from a experienced position and not a graduate trainee position. This is because our career outlook is different, one seeks to grow and is mindful of what the next company should be, the other seeks to put a foot at the door, any door for that matter.

Another thing I've noticed is people looking for accountant with 5 - 8 yrs experience and yet want to pay 150k. This is just a pet peeve of mine but really lets use the salary to judge the experience level. No sound accountant with 5 - 8 yrs experience is looking for 150k. I'm sure this also goes for virtually all jobs.

Shout out to Debbie and the crew for doing a wonderful job. NL job section has been truly blessed by your involvement.

I understand your concern. Sometimes, the client requests that their company name shouldn't be disclosed until the applicant meets with them. However, this doesn't say that the recruiter shouldn't tell you the Industry the company belongs.
