Politics / Why Buhari Can't Ignore Biafra Agitators - Labour Party...........authorityngr by authorityngr(f): 8:19am On Jan 18, 2016
The opposition Labour Party has urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Muhammadu Buhari not to play down the growing restiveness in the South East by refusing to negotiate with pro-Biafra agitators.
The party said Buhari must rise to the occasion by dialoguing with the leadership of both the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).
Through its National Chairman, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, the party asked President Buhari to obey all court orders and grant the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu an unconditional release and warned that his continued detention by the Federal Government would further ignite the protests and violence by Igbo youths.
In an exclusive interview with The AUTHORITY, Abdulsalam said that since the Federal Government negotiated with the Niger Delta agitators in the past, they should accord MASSOB and IPOB the same treatment.
Abdulsalam added that the structure of the country must be revisited in order to carry every section along in the scheme of things and urged the Biafra agitators to maintain peace and seek dialogue with the Federal Government.
He said: “Why are they still keeping Kanu in detention? Buhari said that Kanu has dual passports; many Nigerians have dual passports and citizenship including those in his government. The fact of the matter which Buhari does not know is that the Igbo have every cause to fight for the actualisation of their rights.
“The Yoruba, through the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Afenifere and the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) fought and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo became president. The Niger Delta groups fought and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan became President. So the Igbo nation has the right to fight to actualise their own dreams of either to become the president of the country or otherwise. They cannot be caged, they cannot be stopped. All the economic policies of the APC and Buhari are meant to destroy the Igbo nation because they did not vote them. But they forget that the Igbo nation have the most enterprising people in Nigeria. There is no hamlet or city where you go, especially in the North without finding an Igbo who is doing his business.
“So, Buhari and the APC should understand this and carry the people along without trying to destabilise a particular and important section of this country....http://authorityngr.com/2016/01/Why-Buhari-can-t-ignore-Biafra-agitators--Labour-Party/

Politics / Military Declares War On N'delta Militants.....authorityngr by authorityngr(f): 8:05am On Jan 18, 2016
The military has declared a war on militants in the Niger Delta over their reported renewed bombing of oil and gas pipelines in the region.
Indeed, the military authorities have already deployed a team of soldiers, naval officers and other security operatives to the creeks of the Niger Delta to fish out those responsible for the bombing of the critical oil and gas pipelines in the region.
Residents of some of the affected areas confirm that “there are gunboats everywhere”.
The Commander of Operation Pulo Shield, Maj.-Gen. Alani Gafar Okunlola, said:
“We are going to fish out those responsible... for this sabotage of our critical national assets”. For the fourth day running, the militants, who regrouped in some oil-producing states, especially in Delta State, have launched persistent attacks on pipelines belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC).
Disturbed by the development, the Joint Task Force (JTF), codenamed Operation Pulo Shield, vowed to fish out the militants who blew up several oil and gas installations in the region on Friday night.
The AUTHORITY learnt that the militants bombed some oil installations both on Saturday and on Sunday with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Among the facilities blown up by the militants are the main crude line from Makaraba through Otunana and Abiteye to Escravos and the Olero to Escravos gas line.
The former was destroyed on Friday night while the latter was attacked in the early hours of Sunday.
Also yesterday, the militants blew up major crude oil and gas pipelines belonging to the Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) Tank Farm in Warri South West Local Government Area of the state.
The first attack occurred on Thursday when the militants reportedly bombed the Escravos-Warri-Abuja-Lagos pipelines. Some Itsekiri living in the affected area raised the alarm, warning that the situation, if not checked, could lead to another Ijaw-Itsekiri crisis.
The JTF warned that it would hold community leaders where oil and gas facilities are sabotaged responsible for such acts.....http://authorityngr.com/2016/01/Military-declares-war-on-N-Delta-militants/

Education / NYSC Abolishes Concessional Postings....authoritynews by authorityngr(f): 3:55pm On Jan 08, 2016
The Director General of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-Gen JB Olawumi, has said that henceforth, corps members posted to their various states for the compulsory one year service would no longer have concession.
He warned that Institutions that engage in sharp practices as well as Corps members who provide false information to manipulate their postings will be prosecuted.

Olawunmi disclosed this yesterday at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Batch ‘A’ Pre-Mobilisation Workshop held at the Immaculate Royal Hotel in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Olawumi, noted that the computerisation of the NYSC mobilisation process has brought credibility and transparency in the scheme by eliminating cases of ghost or fake Corps members.

He added that apart from the ease of registration as a result of the computerisation programme, Corps members have been saved the cost and danger of distant travels to their institutions to collect their Call-Up letters...

Politics / The Blood Of The 105 Soldiers Will Cry For Justice- Authorityngr by authorityngr(f): 9:22am On Dec 08, 2015
“Anyone that buys the lie and propaganda that the 105 soldiers never died and that they are still alive is a compound fool or village idiot” - Femi Fani-Kayode

Premium Times reported the news of the missing 105 soldiers just as they did in the news of the Chibok girls. The Government of Mohammadu Buhari denied this report. In fact the acting Director of Army Public Relations Col. Sani Usman, said in a five-line message that the troops

reported to be missing have re-joined their Commanding Officer (CO) and that the situation had been brought under control.

Most of us that were outside the theatre of the war just swallowed the latter news hook, line and sinker. But few days after, the pictures of the dead bodies of the reportedly missing soldiers went viral in the internet. ThisDay and Vanguard newspapers reported that Nigerian army

secretly buried the soldiers. And till date, our government found it proper to still maintain mum on the issue.

Today, the insurgents are still with us and just like the biblical thief, they are still killing, stealing and destroying lives and property. The way they operate nowadays has exposed the illogicality

of the pre-2015 argument that Buhari as a Northerner and retired soldier was in a better position - far better than Goodluck Jonathan

- to nail the coffin of Boko Haram.

This made me to wonder: How did Boko Haram that is on the verge of defeat at the homestretch of GEJ’s administration, get inoculated and regrouped and start tormenting us to the extent of capturing and killing 105 soldiers at a go? This is incredible!

By denying and allegedly secretly burying the dead soldiers, and with Nigerians unaware or perhaps uninformed of the tragedy that befell the country, without Nigerian flag flown at half-mast, without declaring national day of mourning and without a press conference by president

Buhari clearly x-ray the nauseating level of this government’s inhumanity.

Why will Buhari - a retired soldier who knows that the only reward of a soldier is his honour - disgrace these men even in death? This, Fani-kayode tells us is the height of wickedness.

Buhari’s government denied this tragedy out of fear that the news will initiate the erosion of his government’s legitimacy and public confidence. But the blood of these soldiers will soon cry for justice.

Just a glance in USA will tell you how soldiers are treated. The case of Bowe Bergdahl will be worthy of note here.

Bergdahl who was part of US forces in Afghanistan was captured by Taliban jihadists when he committed what is called desertion in military parlance. In plain English, he abandoned his post without permission (a pass, liberty or leave) and with the intention of not returning.

Before his desertion and subsequent capture, he sent

Politics / How Audu Abubakar Died- Authorityngr by authorityngr(f): 9:50pm On Nov 22, 2015
The news crept in surreptitiously. It was taken with a pinch of salt. But it turned out to be the truth. Minutes after the Chief Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Emmanuel Ujah declared the governorship election of Kogi State inconclusive, Prince Abubakar Audu died, the All Progressives Congress ( APC) candidate slumped.

THE AUTHORITY gathered that he collapsed immediately Professor Ujah made the declaration and was rushed into a vehicle on the way to Abuja for immediate medical attention.

Sources close to him, at that point expressed hope that he would make it to Abuja. But that was never to be. He died before he could get out of Lokoja, the State capital where he once held court in the position he coveted till the end.

According to his political associates who confirmed his death, he had fallen ill in the early hours of today due to the strains of hectic campaigning and hyperactive political meetings and consultations before the election.

Romance / To Date Or Not To Date Your Colleague? by authorityngr(f): 9:36pm On Nov 21, 2015
Have you ever come across the saying, "Do not defecate where you eat?" That aphorism can mean, "Don't have a relationship where you work." More often than not, that saying is very true!

Every relationship, of course, has its issues whether you met on the bus, during vacation, a blind date or any other channel. Having a relationship where you work can be a lot more embarrassing for obvious reason: the gossip that goes on around the office should the relationship fail to work out as planned.

I was once involved in an office romance and it was absolutely fantastic. Though, like often predicted, we didn't end up together but the way we healed was magical. I would say, perhaps, because we didn't start any drama for people to take advantage of. We are great friends and I mean great friends now. Maybe, we should have been friends in the first place, rather than going into a relationship and risk being enemies should we have not handled what was remaining of the relationship carefully. One of the most hurtful things about dating where you work is actually seeing the person everyday of your life after the relationship has broken up.

It's even worse when the guy decides to date another girl within the same office. Gosh! As much as you refuse to admit to yourself, choose the denial option that it doesn't bother you, which of course can do you a whole lot of good because really, why lose your head over something you know you cannot change? But the truth is: you wish you were one and only even if it didn't work out between the two of you. And that's what I call respect. However, if he must do it, then he has to be discreet about it and keep people guessing, not throwing it in my face, and still give me the respect that I deserve. I think that's how a lot of people would rather have it go, right?

Love is such a beautiful feeling and I don't think it prepares you for what to say. When you find it, no matter where, you just want to reach out and grab it. That was what happened to Taiwo. He broke his long time rule when he met Titi (now his ex).

Taiwo said to me, Mercy I'm now about to break Code 101 and I was like fill me in on that. What's Code 101? "Do not defecate where you eat." I mused about that because it was something I always knew. The only difference was that Taiwo chose to give it another name.

The last time Taiwo was in a relationship was almost two years ago...

Politics / Buhari Off To Iran For Gas Exporting Countries Summit- Authorityngr by authorityngr(f): 5:20pm On Nov 20, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari will depart Abuja on Sunday for Tehran, Iran where he will participate in the 3rd Gas Exporting Countries' Forum (GECF) opening beginning on Monday.

Politics / Boko Haram's Pledge To ISIS: Public Relations Or Reality? by authorityngr(f): 1:07pm On Nov 20, 2015
During a video released on March 7, 2015, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau formally swore an oath of allegiance to the so-called Islamic State (ISIS). In his pledge, also known as "bay'a," Shekau publicly accepted the authority of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and vowed to support him in times of "difficulty and prosperity." Shekau further called upon "Muslims everywhere to pledge allegiance to the Caliph and support him." On March 12, ISIS spokesman Mohammed al-Adani graciously accepted Shekau's oath of fealty in an audiotape recording.

This is significant in that it has the potential to formalize a relationship between two of the deadliest Islamist extremist organizations currently in operation. According to the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation, Boko Haram and ISIS together accounted for more than 60 percent of all deaths attributed to Islamist extremism in 2014. Moreover, while it may not be the first group to ally with ISIS with allegiances already pledged from jihadist groups in Pakistan, Libya, Egypt, and Algeria, Boko Haram is certainly the largest. According to United States intelligence officials, it has 4,000 to 6,000 core fighters, making it several times larger than ISIS's largest-known affiliates in Egypt (Wilayat Sinai) and Libya (Wilayat al-Barqah, Wilayat al-Tarabulus, and Wilayat al-Fizan).For many analysts, Boko Haram's announcement comes as no surprise.

In a December 2014 briefing, Jamestown Foundation analyst Jacob Zenn presented compelling evidence of Boko Haram shifting almost completely into ISIS's orbit. In particular, Zenn noted Boko Haram was increasingly using ISIS imagery in its video communiques, such as incorporating the rayat al-uqab (the black standard or banner) flag as part of its own logo. Boko Haram's use of Islamic chants or "nasheeds," and the inclusion of an al-Baghdadi sermon in its videos, was seen as further evidence of an ideological, and potentially operational, contiguity with ISIS. Suggestions of growing symbiosis gained further traction in January 2015 when Boko Haram launched its al-'Urwah al-Wuthqa media wing, whose videos bore the sleek production quality and graphics associated with ISIS a significant improvement on previous Boko Haram videos. Moreover, as highlighted by Jihadology founder Aaron Y. Zelin, releases from Boko Haram's media wing were being disseminated by official and semi-official ISIS social media accounts. This, Zelin correctly predicted, was a precursor to a more formal relationship.

But, if Boko Haram had already established ties with ISIS in 2014, why has the group only offered its allegiance now? A possible explanation is that ISIS may not have previously been ready to accept Boko Haram as an official franchise. Although it espouses a similar brand of religious ideology, the Nigerian sect has lacked the credentials of the quintessential Salafi-jihadist movement. For one, unlike many of its counterparts, it has failed to attract the endorsement of any notable religious scholars within or outside of Nigeria's borders. Equally conspicuous is the fact that the global jihadist community has never attempted to justify or even condone the group's armed campaign. Boko Haram's massacring of civilian populations in north-eastern Nigeria may have also prevented formalized ties with ISIS. Although it is equally brutal, ISIS has been methodical in its use of violence, generally framing it as retributive and/or justifiable under Sharia Law. Moreover, ISIS has been able to offset its violent characterization by establishing legitimate administration structures in areas assimilated into its supposed caliphate. By comparison, Boko Haram appears to be both gratuitous and explicit in its use of violence. As noted by David Cook of the James Baker III Institute for Public Policy, Boko Haram's mass killings, pillaging, and enslavement of children more closely match the operations of an African guerrilla movement than those of a Salafi-jihadist organization. Since purportedly establishing links with ISIS in 2014, Boko Haram has, however, made considerable efforts to transform its image. Recent communiques have offered justification for its attacks on civilian communities and refuted claims its members were indiscriminately killing Muslims. Self-proclaimed Boko Haram spokesman Sheikh Abu Mus'ab al-Barnawi showed an uncharacteristic piousness when he noted that anyone "who comes repenting will be forgiven and we will give him safety and security because we are a nation whose morals refuse us initiating harm on those who don't harm us."Also worth noting is the concerted effort to alter the depiction of Shekau. The normally erratic Boko Haram leader has appeared more composed in recent video messages and has increasingly assumed the role of the sect's spiritual leader or imam a ploy possibly aimed at increasing his legitimacy within the jihadist fraternity. Ever cognizant of its public image, ISIS may have delayed an open alliance with Boko Haram until the group asserted itself as a more traditional Salafi-jihadist movement. The transformative process may even have been spearheaded by ISIS and its savvy public relations wing.

Another plausible explanation for the timing of Boko Haram's declaration may relate to its composition. Although Boko Haram is often described as a homogenous entity, many analysts have argued it functions more as an umbrella organization composed of various factions. The International Crisis Group has noted that Boko Haram may have as many as six of these factions, the largest and most powerful of which falls under the direct command of Shekau. That hypothesis was echoed by Jacob Zenn in a briefing to West Point's Combating Terrorism Center. For its part, ISIS seemed to have doubts about the homogeneity of Boko Haram and the Nigerian jihadist movement as a whole as recently as last year. In the November 2014 edition of its official online magazine Dabiq, it noted it had accepted ba yat from a number of foreign groups, including those based in Nigeria, but the declaration of an ISIS wilayat, or province, in these areas was delayed due to the presence of stronger and larger groups which had yet to submit to the authority of the caliph. The subsequent formalizing of the alliance may therefore represent enhanced synergy and coordination within Boko Haram. The pertinent question now is how the declaration could benefit either group, if at all. To begin with, it is clear that a formal alliance could be of significant symbolic and even strategic value to both.

For ISIS, declaring a "province" in Africa's most populous country will...

Politics / ARMS SCANDAL| Jonathan Denies Award Of Contract- Authorityngr by authorityngr(f): 1:00pm On Nov 20, 2015
Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday at a forum in Washington DC, says his government never awarded any contract in the range of $2 billion dollars.

Jonathan made this disclosure while reacting to the arms procurement scandal involving the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

The former President said, “I did not award any $2 billion contract for procurement of weapons,”he further queried, “Where did the money come from?.”

A presidential investigations committee into arms procurement under the Jonathan’s administration had revealed in its interim report that it discovered extra-budgetary spending by the administration to the tune of N643.8 billion and an additional $2.2 billion in the foreign currency component, all managed and supervised by Col. Sambo Dasuki, rtd.

Jonathan noted that the claims by the Buhari administration that he awarded $2bn arms contract was false and unsubstantiated.

He said this while speaking at the event titled: “Presidential elections and democratic consolidation in Africa: Case studies on Nigeria and Tanzania”.

The former President described some of the huge amount said to be missing from the government treasury as unbelievable.

“Sometimes, I feel sad when people mention these figures,” he added.

Touching on his successor, President Jonathan said, “When the President Buhari paid official visit to the US, there were some figures that were mentioned that...

Politics / Ekweremadu: Pdp's Allegation Is Cheap Blackmail - APC by authorityngr(f): 12:44pm On Nov 20, 2015
The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday described the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) allegations linking it and the Presidency to the alleged assassination attempt on Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu as a cheap blackmail that cannot do the party well.
The party, which reacted angrily to the allegation also described it as an induced hallucination which it noted has continued to worry the opposition party since after losing the 2015 general elections.
Spokesman of the PDP, Olisa Metuh had alleged that the ruling APC has hatched a plot to exterminate the Deputy Senate President, and other opposition leaders, stressing that the lives of key opposition members are now in danger.
Reacting to the allegation, APC Acting National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Timi Frank, said it was unfortunate that the PDP has resorted to cheap blackmail adding that the party is yet to purge itself of 'it's cheap and manipulative strategies that only helped escort it to the doldrums that it is in today'.
Comrade Frank in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, described the PDP strategy as cheap and strange propaganda in its attempt to taint the change mantra that the APC has sworn to betroth to the nation.
He reminded the party that the past 16 years of its regime, saw an Honorable Minister, Chief Bola Ige, politicians like Harry Marshall and Funso Williams assassinated with no attempt to unravel the mysteries that surrounded their deaths.
"It would therefore, be unfortunate for the PDP to elevate this strategic act it had perfected over the years to a political art or a propaganda tool. Nigerians all over the world know that President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC are more ......

The Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, on Wednesday described the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, as an experienced information manager. He also described the former National Publicity Secretary of the APC as a dogged fighter and a dedicated nationalist who is committed to the advancement of Nigeria's interests.

A press statement made available to The AUTHORITY by the Special Adviser to the minister, Segun Adeyemi explained that the governor spoke during a courtesy visit to the minister in his office in Abuja.

Mallam el-Rufai said he and Alhaji Mohammed struggled together in the All Progressives Congress (APC), during which "he (the Minister) was abducted once, just like I was arrested twice by the same people."

The governor said he came to wish the minister well and to let him know that the thoughts and prayers of the people of Kaduna State are with him.

He said Nigerians should give maximum support to President Muhammadu Buhari and his team in their quest to get Nigeria out of the difficult situation to which it had been consigned by the previous administration.

In his response, the minister, who said he was 'excited' at the visit, calling governor el-Rufai "one of our brightest and most courageous."

He expressed confidence in the ability of the governor to make Kaduna State one of the best states in the country.

Mohammed said his vision is to leverage the unique power of information and culture to drive the change agenda of the Buhari Administration to ensure that Nigerians take ownership of the agenda, with a view to achieving a paradigm shift in the way they do things.

Politics / Two Air France Flights To Paris Diverted Over Bomb Scare- Authorityngr by authorityngr(f): 4:31pm On Nov 19, 2015
Two Air France flights bound for Paris from the United States, US, were diverted to Salt Lake City and Halifax, Canada, after the airline received anonymous threats by telephone, following their respective takeoffs, the carrier said.

According to Air France Group yesterday, there was a "bomb scare" on Flight 55, a Boeing 777-300 aircraft, from Washington, and Flight 65, an Airbus Group SE A380 plane, from Los Angeles. Both planes landed safely and were diverted as a precautionary measure to conduct all necessary security checks.

Nerves are on edge following last week's terror attacks in Paris in which no fewer than 129 people were confirmed killed.

Also on Tuesday, a bomb threat led Germany to cancel a soccer game with the Netherlands that Chancellor Angela Merkel and members of her cabinet had planned to attend.

Founder of Dubai-based Martin Consulting LLC, Mark D. Martin, said in an e-mail: "World aviation is on high alert. Airports need to immediately step up screening of all staff entering airports, including contract workers and anyone connected with parked aircraft."

Politics / Boko Haram's Reign Is Over, Says Buratai by authorityngr(f): 11:44am On Nov 18, 2015
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Tukur Buratai, says the days of Boko Haram sect are numbered as the Army has being recording successes in the ongoing battle against the insurgents in the North-East zone of the country, stressing that the network of the sect have met stiff resistance from officers of the Nigeria Armed Forces.
The Army boss, who was speaking during the opening of a one-week seminar organised by the Training and Doctrine Command of the Nigerian Army (TRADOC) in Minna, Niger State, said the Army is more than ready to bring the sect on its knees before the December deadline issued by the Federal Government.
Buratai, who was represented at the occasion by TRADOC Commander, Major General Mobolaji Adeleke Koleoso, stated that with the theme of the one week Seminar titled: 'Middle Leadership and, Emotional Intelligence towards Ending Insurgency', it has gone to show that the days of Boko Haram are already numbered.
According to him, "The military is seriously on top of the situation and by next month, the deadline set by the Federal Government to put an end to the insurgency in the country will be met".
He maintained that with the confidence of soldiers at the battlefield already boosted, there will be no escape route for the insurgents because all mechanisms towards achieving results have been set in motion and this will make the job of the soldiers at the front line easier.

Politics / Remembering Saro-wiwa - The Tears Never Cease by authorityngr(f): 8:39am On Nov 17, 2015
As I sat on my reading table to put down this piece, i visualized how the Nigerian state has treated the Ogoni with so much disdain and how Shell, the oil giant that thrives on lies, dishonesty and irresponsibility continues to make efforts to return to Ogoniland drilling sites and resume oil operations not minding the atrocities committed against the people and their vocal commitment not to have the evil company return to Ogoni for drilling operations.

I quite remember vividly, the dark shadows cast on Port Harcourt on November 10, 1995 when at about 12noon, the BBC reported that Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogonis have been killed by the Abacha led federal government. It was great shock for me as i felt helpless, unable to confront the government and realizing that Saro-Wiwa was no more.

Tears flowed uncontrollably not just for Saro-Wiwa but for the other eight including Dr Kiobel, John Kpuinen and the other 6 whom i knew committed no crime other than supporting Saro-Wiwa's campaign to save the Ogoni from a strangulating political, economic and environmental clutch of two powerful institutions - the Nigerian Government and the Shell Petroleum Development Company, an affiliate of Shell.

The stain from Saro-Wiwa's blood still continues to haunt Nigeria where no real efforts are made to correct the past mistakes of social injustice. The Ogoni, whose contributions as a unique people within the Nigerian state is persistently downplayed, and her identity is not recognized by the government, makes more contributions to the economy than some 20 states put together.

Within Ogoni are two oil refineries, two sea ports, two electricity generating plants, a fertilizer and a petro-chemical complex, an oil and gas free zone accommodating over 500 companies. Yet the Ogoni do not have a state of their own within the so-called Nigerian federation. The revenues generated from the Ogoni territories are shared by the federal government to support the multiple states created for the dominant three ethnic groupings including the Ibos, Huasa-Fulanis and Yorubas.

Unfortunately, the Ogonis have chosen not to adopt the tactics that forces the Nigerian government to submission - violence. The fear of a possible extermination should a violent approach be followed have possibly kept the Ogoni on the path of a non-violent approach.

During the period preceding Saro-Wiwa's hanging and the immediate period after, one Major Paul Okuntimo had been deployed to Ogoni as head of a special military task force which unleashed terror on the people. The only safe place became the bush. The Ogoni knows that a violent approach will be appreciated by the government who will simply kill the entire population under the guise of ending an uprising.

Nigeria's choice not to reward non-violence by ensuring justice for small and oppressed groups like the Ogoni is costing her enormously in money and prestige. The Nigerian government government under President Goodluck Jonathan initiated payment for militants in the Niger Delta region who took arms against the state urging them to allow the continual flow of oil from the region. The government has also on several occasions made offers to the Boko Haram group to stop violence in the North-East. Government reward for violence in Nigeria and delays in addressing the Ogoni problem is undoubtedly a time-bomb as frustrations rise daily among an already dehumanized and poor population.

Twenty years after Saro-Wiwa, the Ogonis are constantly reminded by November 10 of a system that has been very brutish and unjust, ....

Business / The Changing Narrative Of The Aba Shoe Maker by authorityngr(f): 11:17am On Nov 16, 2015
Between the 1980s and the early 90s, the Aba shoe industry witnessed an unprecedented boom. Aba shoes made in the popular Ariaria International Market captured the West African and Central African markets such as Togo and Cameroun.
The Aba shoe industry boom was cut short by the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida's regime when Nigeria became a dumping ground for all manner of imported goods, especially shoes. He stated his administration's willingness to encourage and empower Aba shoe makers, bag and leather manufacturers to excel in their trade.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday administered the oath of office on 16 of the 18 Federal Permanent Secretaries he appointed last Tuesday and warned them not to sabotage his government.

Following the nation's economic downturn, Buhari told the newly appointed permanent secretaries to regard their appointments as an emergency call to duty, which is why they must work harmoniously with the ministers.

The President said that "it is within public domain that ministers as chief executives of their ministries as well as other Government officials involved in policy formulation and implementation often complain of the intolerable levels of incompetence, indifference or even suspected sabotage by some of the top echelon of the civil service.

"Even where permanent secretaries, in some instances, are exempted from these accusations, they are still responsible and liable for failing to provide the required leadership, control and direction.

Guinness Nigeria Plc said yesterday that it had been fined N1billion ($5 million) by the local food and drug agency over alleged infractions relating to the destruction and re-validation of expired raw materials without prior approval.

The local unit of Diageo said it did not fully understand the basis for the fine, nor the particular regulations infringed, but was in talks with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to resolve the matter.

Guinness reported a 76 per cent year-on-year drop in the three months ended September 30, 2015. The company's results for the period, which is the first quarter of its financial year ending on June 30, 2015, showed that its profit after tax fell from N1.485billion in the corresponding period of 2014 to N362.3million.

Guinness Nigeria's profit before tax fell by 74 per cent from N1.963billion to N517.5million, while basic

earnings per share declined by 76 per cent from N94 to N22.

A positive for the company in the period is a three per cent year-on-year growth in revenue, which saw it realise N21.742billion in the three months to September 30, 2015 as against N21.048billion in the same period a year earlier.

Guinness Nigeria, however, recorded an 18 per cent increase in cost sales – from N10.499billion to N12.437billion in the review period, while its distribution and administration expenses rose by two per cent from N7.838billion to N8.001billion.

Politics / APC, LP Disagree Over Buhari's Appointments by authorityngr(f): 2:54pm On Nov 12, 2015
The All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday disagreed with the Labour Party on the allocation of portfolios to the new Ministers by President Muhammadu Buhari.

While reacting to the distribution of offices to the ministers, the APC had expressed satisfaction with the inauguration, stressing that it was in line with its message of change.

National Secretary of the Party, Manila Buni noted that the inauguration and distribution of portfolios to the ministers had proved that the party really meant to introduce a new way of doing things in the country through its change message.

"It's very okay by us, because we want our ministers, being agents of change, to start on a clean slate. And as you know, they are competent enough," he stated.

But the Labour Party condemned the APC and President Buhari in the allocation of offices to the ministers, stressing that it has proved his disregard and continued marginalisation of some geopolitical zones of the country.

National Chairman of the Labour Party, Abdul Kadiir Abdul Salam regretted that rather than using the ministerial positions to appease the South East group, which he noted had been marginalised in his recent appointments, the President has continued to show disregard to the zone by ensuring that they never got any of the ministries that are regarded as a category.

"The distribution has shown a round peg in a square hole. It is in line with his previous activities of putting wrong people to head the ministries. Somebody who is a lawyer is already appointed as Minister of Works.

The worst of it is that he has given his errand boys the best of appointments. Most of those who got the senior ministerial positions are people that have worked with him for donkey years and...

Politics / Why We Won't Prosecute CCT Chairman - EFCC by authorityngr(f): 1:52pm On Nov 12, 2015
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday defended its failure to put on trial the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Justice Danladi Umar over the N10 million bribe levelled against him.

The commission said on Wednesday that its action was informed by the fact the facts presented against Umar were not sufficient to sustain his prosecution. The anti-graft agency said that the so called facts were mere suspicions which in law, cannot take the place of proof. In a memorandum forwarded to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the EFCC, however, confirmed that one Ali Gambo Abdullahi, a Personal Assistant to the CCT boss admitted receiving N1.8 million in 2012 from one Rasheed Taiwo standing trial at the tribunal.

The said Abdullahi was alleged to have used his salary account at Zenith Bank to collect the graft. In the letter dated March 5, 2015 and signed by the immediate past Executive Chairman of EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Lamorde, the complainant in the bribery saga, Mr Rasheed Taiwo, a retired Deputy Comptroller General of Customs was said to have failed to produce the alleged telephone conversations and text messages exchanged between him and Justice Umar.

The former Customs chief was said to have persistently claimed that he had lost his phone since 2012 and could not trace or recover it.

Politics / PDP Disowns Dokpesi Over Apology To Nigerians by authorityngr(f): 1:44pm On Nov 12, 2015
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has disowned the Chairman of its National Conference Planning Committee, Chief Raymond Dokpesi over his Tuesday's apology to Nigerians over the party's failure to meet Nigerians' expectations while in power for 16 years.

Dokpesi had apologised to Nigerians on behalf of the party for the errors the PDP committed during the period, especially for fielding former President Goodluck Jonathan instead of a northern candidate.

Reacting to Dokpesi's apology on Wednesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said that Dokpesi's statement was personal.

He said: "That statement made by Chief Raymond Dokpesi is his personal opinion and does not represent in any way an official position of the PDP.

"In the first place, Dokpesi is not a member of the national executive of the PDP and he can only speak in his personal capacity and his opinion remains personal and does not represent that of the party "The decision to field former President Jonathan in the 2015 presidential race was approved by the National Working Committee (NWC), the National Executive Council (NEC) and the party's National Caucus.

In addition, the constitution of the party allows a sitting president to exercise his right to run for a second term if he so desires.

"This is not the time for buck-passing or blame game. We are repositioning our party. What we should do is to join hands to reposition the PDP based on the report of the Senator Ike Ekweremadu to reclaim the party's lost glory.

This is what is expected of us all at this time," he said. On whether the PDP regrets its actions, Metuh said: "How can you regret a decision taken where everyone was there - the NWC, NEC and the National Caucus? What are we talking about? Everybody was conscious of the decision, nobody was coerced into supporting the position."

We must, as a people, put on our thinking caps so that we can chart the way forward for employment generation."

He emphasised that Government alone cannot provide everybody with employment; it can only create the enabling environment for all other sectors to thrive and Ministry of Labour and Employment, he said is part of the power house that will pave way for the private sector to generate jobs through developmental-focused labour laws, among others.

Politics / Issues Out Of The Biafran Agitation by authorityngr(f): 4:31pm On Nov 10, 2015
The "Million Man March" of the Indigenous People of Biafra took place on Friday in certain parts of the country. My wonder is how this phenomenon grew on the country without my being aware of it and without my monitoring its dynamic from inception. Perhaps the problems lies in the fact that I'm domiciled other than where Radio Biafra broadcasts are chiefly targeted.

My attention was forcibly dragged into the whole question of the renewed agitation for Biafra when Nigerian authorities responsible for such matters announced that they had jammed Radio Biafra's signals. Upon a recent visit to my home state of Anambra, I took the time to discuss the issue of Biafra with a broad spectrum of people. I found primarily that Radio Biafra appealed more to youths, whether educated or not, than it did to older folk or the classes of people characterized as well-to-do. But it also has cheering supporters from academics, white-collar workers and the truly rich. In other words, there's hardly a social class it doesn't appeal to, and its message settles well in minds that are not even Igbo.

Without question, the radio station is the impetus for the renewed agitation for Biafra. The arrest of the outfit's Director merely escalated things. I have monitored the responses elicited by the agitation. Some find it intolerable. Others claim ....
