Travel / Danfo Driver Who Took One-Way Fled & Abandoned His Bus When He Sighted Sanwo-Olu by AutoReportNG: 7:00pm On Dec 18, 2019
Gov Babajide Sanwo-Olu on several occasions has stated that his administration will not condone one-way driving either from government officials or from commercial drivers. Mother luck ran out against a driver today at the popular Ebute-Ero bridge, the governor who sighted the vehicle from afar stopped his convey to personally arrest the driver, the driver on seeing the governor abandoned his bus and ran for safety.

The LASTMA official will have to tow the bus to their station and according to the Lagos traffic law, anyone caught driving against the traffic will have to forfeit his vehicle to the state government.

These are some of the photos AutoReportNG got from the scene...

Under the Lagos Traffic Law, there are codes and rules for traffic.

Penalties for Neglect of Traffic Directions.

Where an officer of the Authority is for the time being engaged in the regulation of traffic on a highway, or where any traffic sign being a sign for regulating the movement of traffic or indicating the route to be followed by vehicle has been lawfully placed on or near a highway in accordance with the provisions of this Law, any person driving or propelling any vehicle, who-

(a) Neglects or refuses to stop the vehicle or to make it proceed or to keep to a particular lane or direction of traffic when directed to do so by the officer in the execution of his duty; or

(b) Drives his vehicle against oncoming traffic or fails to conform to the direction or indication given by the traffic sign, shall be guilty of an offence, and shall be liable on conviction for:
(i) 1st offender one (1) year imprisonment and forfeiture of the vehicle to the State;
(ii) 2nd and subsequent offender three (3) years imprisonment and forfeiture of the vehicle to the State.

Crime / It’s Illegal! Local Governments Do Not Have Right To Fine Or Tax Your Car by AutoReportNG: 7:42pm On Dec 12, 2019
There are many illegalities that are going on in Nigeria that we let to go, not because they are right but because we are not enlightened enough to know our right as a citizen, the duties of the state, local and government agencies. Many at times, the local government agencies have turned themselves to god by milking the citizens dry not only that, most of what they are illegal.

According to the taxes and levy gazette act released in 1998, it states the type of taxes the three government arms are to government. Many at times, the local government guys have abuse their office and start doing the work of VIO and FRSC.

These are the authorized levies that the Federal Government of Nigeria approved in 1998 for Local Government, anyone charging you anything apart from this is a criminal.

Taxes and Levies to be collected by the Local Government

1. Shops and kiosks rates.
2. Tenement rates.
3. On and Off Liquor Licence fees.
4. Slaughter slab fees.
5. Marriage, birth and death registration fees.
6. Naming of Street registration fee, excluding any street in the State Capital.
7. Right of Occupancy fees on lands in rural areas, excluding those collectable by the Federal and State Governments.
8. Market taxes and levies excluding any market where State finance is involved.
9. Motor park levies.
10. Domestic animal licence fees.
11. Bicycle, truck. canoe, wheelbarrow and cart fees, other than a mechanically propelled truck.
12. Cattle tax payable by cattle farmers only.
13. Merriment and road closure levy.
14. Radio and television licence fees (other than radio and television transmitter).
15. Vehicle radio licence fees (to be imposed by the Local Government of the State in which the car is registered).
16. Wrong parking charges.
17. Public convenience, sewage and refuse disposal fees.
18. Customary burial ground permit fees.
19. Religious places establishment permit fees.
20. Signboard and Advertisement permit fees.

The only accepted fee they are empowered to tax is when you park wrongly, local government do not have the power to tax or bill you apart from that.

Many at times, we have fallen prey to the craftiness of these so-called officers that even when we are right but because we are not sure of what the law says, we have to part with our hard-earned money. One of the ways they tend to outsmart motorists is by quoting the wrong parking code which they quickly used to rob you in.

He may be out of the office but that doesn’t stop him from living his life. Dino Melaye is a man who is not afraid to bare his mind. Call him a car enthusiast, you are not far from the truth. Dino loves cars and power bikes. it’s being estimated that the cars in his compound amount to billions of naira, he loves them and he cherishes them. In fact, he has a special place for his Rolls Royce in his living room where he parked.

Dino early this week decided to go biking which is not news but the news aspect of it is the beast he is riding with. The bike seems to be a custom made type of Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa but we can’t ascertain as the back is a bit different from Dino’s type. In case you know the name, kindly send us a mail or a direct message, we will update our article.

We are in the festive period, this is the time people travel most to see their loved ones, time to bound and keep up with friends and families. As significant as this period is, it is important to note that not only will the road be busy especially those coming from Lagos, Abuja and other urban places, this is also when we record high cases of accident and kidnapping on the highway.

The Nigeria Police Public Relations Department in its bid to inform and sensitize the public has come out to list ways to have a safe trip, especially for the travellers.

- Avoid night journey
- Avoid over-speeding
- Be on your seat belt while driving
- Avoid overloading
- Avoid stopping on lonely roads
- Avoid taking or giving free rides to passengers
- Don’t drink and drive.

Life they say is precious and it’s only when one is alive that he can celebrate Christmas and the New Year. Drive responsibly and please be safe.

Travel / FAAN Bans Uber, Bolt And Others From Lagos Airport, Places Heavy Fine by AutoReportNG: 7:51pm On Dec 10, 2019
The question on our lips is, what does the Nigerian government really want from transport ride-sharing firms? At first, it was ORide, Max and Gokada and the NURTW group, this time, it has shifted to the cars sector.

According to an eye witness that was at the Muritala Muhammed Airport, MMIA, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has banned Taxify and Uber from the airport, the ban takes effect as from today. According to him,

I saw this at the airport this afternoon on my way out of Lagos and it reads:

Federal Airport Authority Of Nigeria has issued a directive via this billboard to state that Uber, Taxify and other ride-sharing companies are not allowed to pick up passengers from the airport from today.

The idea behind the new directive by FAAN is to protect the local taxi jobs and drivers who are suffering from low patronage ever since the arrival of Uber and Taxify to the scene.

The fine for defaulting ranges from 10,000 naira.

Please be aware.

With this ban, the local taxis are back to milking passengers dry with their outrageous charges especially when they see that you are new in the country.

wwwihy:

Why are you contradicting yourself. You said in your narration that if a major bridge is shut, Lagos will be at stand still. The question is, if this Falomo Bridge is shut, will Lagos be at Standstill? I will answer YES, a bridge connecting most important residential and commercial centres in Nigeria is what OP is classifying as not a major bridge.

Alright Sir, we will look into it and try to revert.

Thanks for the clarification

OP,
I am surprised that you left out Five Cowries Creek Bridge from your list.

Please include it. If you need its history let me know.

Five Cowries Creek Bridge links Ikoyi (Falomo) to Lekki, and VI, its still rated at an inner bridge because it only connects two communities. Though its an old bridge but its not a major bridge in Lagos.

Third Mainland Bridge

This list will not be complete with the mention of the Third Mainland Bridge. The bridge can be said to be the heartbeat of Lagos traffic, anything that happened on that bridge affects Lagos and beyond. The Third Mainland Bridge – sometimes known as Ibrahim Babangida Boulevard – is a bridge in Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria. At 11.8km long, it’s the longest of three road bridges crossing Lagos Lagoon. The structure connects the commercial district of Lagos Island to the mainland section of the city.

Lagos is the most populous city in Africa. Traffic in the city increased throughout the 1970s and 1980s – leading to heavy congestion on roads.

The two existing crossings between the island and mainland – the Eko and Carter bridges – were struggling to cope with the weight of traffic.

Government directives – including a scheme where odd and even-numbered cars could only drive into the city on alternate days – did little to improve traffic problems.

Third Mainland Bridge is the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, the other are the Eko and Carter bridges. It was the longest bridge in Africa until 1996 when the 6th October Bridge located in Cairo was completed. The bridge starts from Oworonshoki which is linked to the Apapa-Oshodi expressway and Lagos-Ibadan expressway and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island. There is also a link midway through the bridge that leads to Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba. The bridge was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and opened by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990; it measures about 11.8 km in length.

The Third Mainland Bridge carries eight lanes of traffic – four in each direction. There’s a median separator – a structure to mark the division between the two sets of lanes – running down the centre.

The overall width of the structure is 33.1m, including 3.5m for the median separator.

Engineers constructed an artificial island in Lagos Lagoon at the point the bridge met the road interchange at Ebute Metta.

The scheme used reinforced concrete to construct the main bridge. The structure’s deck – the part that carries traffic – was also made of reinforced concrete.

Conclusion

It is worthy to note that there are some inner bridges that are not included in this post like the Ojuelegba bridge, Ijora Apapa Bridge, The Independence Bridge at Ajah, Falomo-Lekki bridge, at some other ones. These are not major bridges because they only connect inner roads within the metropolis unlike those mentioned above.

The Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge

This bridge can best be described as the bridge for the rich folks and elites in Lagos. The bridge has elites using the bridge for exercise that even the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg when he was in Lagos some few years ago used this bridge for his work-out.

The Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge is a 1.36 km cable-stayed bridge in Lagos State. It links the Phase 1 area of Lekki, with Ikoyi district of Lagos. The bridge was commissioned on the 29th of May 2013 by the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola.

The bridge is the first cable-stayed bridge to be built in Nigeria and was constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria. The bridge has a 9-metre headroom above the water level in order to allow for the flow of maritime traffic. The bridge is a toll bridge and its use is restricted to private and commercial vehicles with a total seating capacity not exceeding 26. The toll gate is located at the Lekki end of the bridge. Tolling has been controversial with some Lagosians believing that since the bridge was built with public funds, its use should be available at no cost.

The Fourth Mainland Bridge

Even though the Fourth Mainland Bridge dream has been on the burner for years since the days of the former governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola while he handled over to Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, nothing seems to be forthcoming on it. Remember AutoReportNG did an article on this some months ago

The Fourth Mainland Bridge is a proposed 38km long bridge by the Lagos State Government, Nigeria, connecting Lagos Island by way of Lekki, Langbasa, and Baiyeku towns and across Lagos Lagoon to Itamaga, in Ikorodu. The idea was conceptualized by the government of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former governor of Lagos state. Construction is planned to commence in 2017 and be completed by 2019 but had not been started as of November 28th, 2019. The project will cost the state an estimated sum of ₦844 billion in 2017 budget. Some few weeks, the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration called for bidding from interested companies, firms over the 4th Mainland bridge for fresh bids.

Eko Bridge

Eko Bridge is one of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland.

Eko bridge was made in order to convey citizens faster. Bolu Akande brought up the idea in a summit of leaders In 1963 but no one listened to him till 1965

The bridge starts from Ijora Olopa on the mainland and ends at the Apongbon area of Lagos Island. The lagoon section of the bridge spans a distance of 430 metres. The bridge and its landward extension of 1350 metres were constructed in phases between 1965 and 1975. It serves as the preferred access point for vehicular traffic approaching Lagos Island from the Apapa and Surulere areas of Lagos.

The bridge was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC

Many at times, we have heard saying like, “I didn’t come to Lagos to count bridge”. For those coming to Lagos for the first times, one may be tempted to ask, does it mean that Lagos is full of bridges? How many bridges do we have in Lagos? Where are they located and what are their major functions.

We need to understand that bridges are built to link some roads to reach other, majorly, they serve as a connector between two or more inaccessible roads, for example, people living in Ebute Metta, Ijora, Apapa would have found it strenuous connecting to Lagos Island if not for Eko Bridge because there are oceans and sea at the Ijora Olopa/Lagos Lagoon, so, we can say bridges serve as connectors between different locations and also to make journey faster, easier and shorter.

Lagos is a cosmopolitan city, a state that has about 18-22million people in it all struggling for amenities that can barely go round few. They are some bridges in Lagos that when these bridges are closed, Lagos will never remain the same again. These are some of the bridges we have in Lagos

The Carter Bridge

Carter Bridge was built in 1901. It is one of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland. At the time of its construction, it was the only bridge that connects the mainland and Lagos Island together. The bridge starts from Iddo on the mainland and ends at Idumota area of Lagos Island.

The bridge was named after Sir Gilbert Thomas Carter, a former Governor of the Colony of Lagos.

The Carter Bridge was originally constructed by the British colonial government, prior to Nigerian independence in 1960. After independence, the bridge was dismantled, redesigned and rebuilt during the late 1970s. The Alaka-Ijora flyover, on the Iddo end of the span, was completed in 1973. The Carter bridge plays a very important role in the lives of Lagosians especially for people who are “Mainlanders”. Even though the bridge has been taken over by traders from Idumota, the bridge still remains strong and standing.

Politics / Sanwo-Olu Flags Off Massive Road Construction In Ikorodu – Photos by AutoReportNG: 11:03am On Dec 05, 2019
A crowd of joyous residents of Ikorodu in Lagos State on Wednesday trooped out to receive Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu who was in the area to flag off massive rehabilitation and expansion of major roads.

Accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the State’s cabinet, Sanwo-Olu formally kicked off the upgrading and reconstruction of Owutu-Agric-Isawo, Bola Tinubu-Igbogbo-Imota and Itamaga-Ijede roads, giving the residents the feeling of long-sought relief.

The three road projects, which are expected to be completed in the next 20 months, are being handled by Messrs Hitech Construction Company and Arab Contractor.

The 11.9 kilometres Ijede Road stretches from Ewu Elepe to Ijede town, cutting across four local councils and 37 communities. Governor Sanwo-Olu awarded contract for the construction of the first phase of the road, which covers 6.05 kilometres from Itamaga to Ewu Elepe town.

Also, the Governor officially flagged off the construction of the first phase of Owutu-Agric-Isawo Road, covering 7.8 kilometres and cutting across eight communities. It is being upgraded to a dual carriageway.

Sanwo-Olu said: “Today’s event is remarkable not just for me personally, but for my Government and the people of Ikorodu who will directly benefit from this project. The flag-off of these projects is the beginning of the much needed relief we are bringing to our people on this axis.

“We are here today to fulfil the promise we made during campaign. These promises are now being translated to reality, because we have the construction of these roads. We have ensured that we deploy competent and reliable contractors to design and deliver the projects on agreed date.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu described Ikorodu as critical component of the Lagos project, assuring residents that his administration remained committed to reviving infrastructure in the Division.

“Ikorodu is critical and important to our agenda towards delivering Greater Lagos. This is why I personally created the time to come and flag off these projects,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The Governor said the projects were not being done to score cheap political point; rather, he said his Government considered them as right of the people who had been longing to benefit from dividends of governance.

After the completion of the first phase of the project, Sanwo-Olu assured that the Government would not delay the construction of the second phase.

The road projects, the Governor disclosed, would create a chain of job opportunities for residents living around the sites, pointing out that the contractors had agreed to engage community members in informal work and supply of materials.

It was jubilation galore as residents of the Victoria Island-Oniru axis came out on Wednesday to witness the official flag off of the Victoria Island-Oniru axis road upgrading project by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The project, which is being executed through Public Infrastructure Improvement Partnership (PIIP) arrangement”, was conceived and conceptualised four months ago by Planet Projects at the instance of Access Bank Plc, the major partner.

The aim was to improve the traffic linkage and travel time around the highly commercial axis of Victoria Island. It is believed that traffic congestion being experienced within the project area reduces productivity and discourage the growth of businesses.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Works, Mrs Aramide Adeoye, in her opening remarks, said the project is significant in a number of ways because it involves private sector participation, stressing that the private sector is seen as a critical partner in the growth and development of the economy of Lagos State.

Araoye said the private sector, which controls about eighty per cent of the State’s Gross Domestic product is crucial in the government’s drive to bridge the infrastructure gap and to also build the smart city of our dream.

She said: “Access Bank has keyed into one of the ways to realize the state’s objective of making Lagos a 21st-century economy by partnering with the State Government in Infrastructural upgrading of Oniru Network of roads under a Public Infrastructure Improvement Partnership (PIIP) arrangement.”

While flagging off the project, Sanwo-Olu said the partnership was another “deliberate action” to solve traffic congestion and relieve Lagos residents of pain.

“We came to this area about 4 months ago at a presentation at Four Points and we told our partners that immediately the rain subsides, we would come back and start with the development of the Oniru into Victoria Island from Lekki.

“I’m happy that within a short time frame, a lot of work has been done. We are here being the 3rd of December, and, with the stoppage of the rains, work can now start immediately.

The Governor said the project will be completed in six months.

Giving details of the construction work, Planet Projects Managing Director, Mr. Biodun Otunola, said the project would lead to the construction of Alaba Oniru Road, Akingbolagbe Road to Muri Okunola Roundabout. He added there would be a regeneration of seven junctions prone to traffic on the axis.

Otunola estimated the total length of the construction work to be 1.8 kilometres, stressing that the construction would be purely concrete to ensure durability. He added that the materials to be used would be sourced locally.

He listed road improvement, junction improvement work, traffic system management measures and classification of roads as 1-way street as part of the proposed solutions in the project.

Thanks
