I read somewhere that punches in Dambe are so hard they can break cinderblocks, fracture human bones and kill opponents. Any sport like that is a no-no for me. I want my favourite athletes free from grievous bodily harm. With the Senegalese form matches don't last longer than six seconds and involve only brute strength which requires competitors training frequently to build and maintain.

Saying that punches in Dambe are lethal is more of an over-exaggeration. While no doubt, the punches are hard, the key here is to match athletes in their weight scales. This way a balance is created, and even more, the fights are more interesting with better showmanship.

The Battle for Lagos was our first event in Lagos and we hope to bring a much more action-packed event in December.

Dambe boxing can be improved with the addition of standard hand gloves like in boxing and UFC. The fighters should wear teeth guard for safety and a rules book developed. It's gaining popularity on the internet and can attract sports betting and other companies sponsorship and become a money spinner

Great thought... we are looking in that direction in the near future.

Senegalese wrestling is the best. Those guys are professionals in their sport. Dambe is an amateur sport anyone can indulge in. It is also very dangerous unlike Senegal's catch wrestling form.

I beg to disagree. Dambe like the Senegalese wrestling is both different forms of combat sports practised across West Africa. While one involves hard punches and knockouts, the other involves hand grapples and tackles to bring the opponent down.

I know the wait has been long... but I promise you, we won't disappoint.

The Dambe is usually common among the Hausa's... If you come to Obalende on weekends, you will see them under the bridge, I once did a feature about them around May this year... But they are mostly drugged

When do they fight on the weekends... we have had Dambe fighters come in from Kano and Kebbi, with a few from Lagos.

The rain fell in torrents but the crowd was having none of it... the show had to go on.

These African Warriors had to tango in the rain.

THE BATTLE FOR LAGOS

A convergence of fighters across Nigeria saw the emergence of champions in Wrestling and Dambe. The event organised by the AFRICAN WARRIORS FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP in conjunction with the Lagos State Board of Traditional Sports was action-packed, thrilling and exciting.


Jalisco Stadium in Oshodi played host to the event and the crowd had their fill of hard punches, tackles and slams.

It is said that a picture tell a thousand words... feed your eyes.

Indeed a great sport. The show of raw power and tactics is always a delight to see.

For us at African Warriors Fighting Championship, we recognise this and that's why we have embarked on this journey to show the colourful and all immersive nature of African traditional combat sports to the world.

The tourism ministry has a lot to do..

The Battle for Lagos was our second hosted event done in conjunction with the Lagos State board for traditional sports. In December, we will be taking Lagos again by storm at the Coronation of Kings, happening live at a beach front on the island.
