Nairaland / General / Africans Misconception About The Boxing-day by Ayade001(m): 5:30pm On Dec 26, 2023
By David Peter

A genius would wonder why the Boxing Day Celebration had emerged after the merry jubilation of the Saviour; as imbibed by AFRICA'S belief that it's a day for two or more people knocking each other in an enclosed ring.

Nonetheless, understanding the essence of Christ-birth which was to bring love, peace, and good tidings to mankind.

Hence, why a fight day after the birth of Christ? Why Please, tighten your seat belt as we zoom off.

In celebration of the birth of Christ as marked on December 25. Coming next was a cultural holiday observed on December 26, with a rich history dating back to 1871. Throwback, the federal holiday was foremost practiced in Ireland, the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

The day simultaneously tally with the banquet of St. Stephen, a chaplain, Reverend, and priest who is known for his care for the downtrodden and his neighborhood.

The observance of "Boxing Day" originated from boxes of donations and contributions from the early Christian churches in the 16th-century practice of the working class (also term servants or administrators) seeking Christmas "boxes" from those they served; that is, their leaders/bosses.

The day was designated as a cherished tradition that encompasses giving back to those who serve throughout the year, whether through a monetary gift or a small present.

It was also marked as a significant tradition in donating to the less privileged, whether by allotting to local food banks or supporting charities.

Coincidentally, sporting legend also pegged the day for game events such as horse racing or football, with the United Kingdom hosting a full day of Premier League games to raise money to support the poor or orphanage homes; and charity organizations. Therefore, as game lovers swarm over to watch the sporty event they pay to get an access tag. likewise, other sports enthusiasts who can't attend physically could glimpse the event through a paid channel online or via a station subscription. All this was aimed at raising funds for charity and NGOs; the ideology was never meant for fighting. In fact, there hasn't been any legendary ring-boxing show held in such a period way back to term its boxing-ring day.

Ignorantly, celebrities in my country, 🇳🇬 have tweaked it to be a ring combat fun-show between Portable and Charlie(AkA Mr. Phenomenon). Majority, of people, tend to believe that, it is a day for fighting, no wonder you see a lot of battle skits and pranks trending on such a compassionate day as a ring-boxing day instead of a gift-boxing day.

Politics / Tinubu Bags Man Of The Year, X-rays Blueprint To Curtail Poverty by Ayade001(m): 8:08pm On Dec 17, 2023
Nigeria's President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during the weekend, talked about the economic program of his administration in a brief interview with The Nation, which announced him as Man Of The Year on 17 December, as observed:

The Nation: What do you say to millions of Nigerians battling a cost-of-living crisis caused by spiraling inflation, high petrol prices, and currency devaluation, who desperately want some relief?

Tinubu: As your President, I am deeply aware of the economic crisis's severe impact on Nigerians, and we are part of a global challenge with the rising costs of living. To help our people, my administration: is taking proactive steps. We are focused on providing financial support to businesses and ensuring the availability and affordability of staple foods, which are essential for every Nigerian family. One of our key initiatives is the provision of N25,000 monthly to 15 million households, for three months. To further support food security, we're working with our partners, local and international, to improve agricultural practices and provide essential resources to farmers.

In addition, the National Single Window Project is being implemented to enhance international trade efficiency. All these efforts are in line with our commitment to reducing the economic burden on our citizens, especially the working class and vulnerable groups. The reallocation of funds from the removal of the petrol subsidy is also a strategic move to bolster our government's finances, contributing to a stable economic environment for all.

Furthermore, in our commitment to ease the economic strain on our citizens, particularly the working class and vulnerable groups, our administration is championing the shift to cleaner energy sources. We recognize the benefits of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in providing an affordable and cleaner mass transit system. To facilitate this, we have waived the Value Added Tax (VAT) on CNG purchases. Additionally, to reduce the costs in food transportation and manufacturing, we've also waived VAT on diesel for six months.
I fully appreciate that these massively important reforms have been hard, but the dividends are already manifesting, with even more in sight. We have already seen improvements in our economic outlook, as corroborated by the likes of Fitch and Moody’s. These may seem ‘academic’ to many but the impact on investor confidence is significant.

The Nation: Many have criticized the cash transfer initiatives of your government, saying they are superficial and cannot address the level of poverty in the land. Are you still convinced about the efficacy of these programs?

Tinubu: I am steadfast in my belief in the efficacy of our cash transfer initiatives. These initiatives are a crucial part of our strategy to target and provide relief to the most vulnerable segments of our population, especially during the last three months of the year when the prices of basic items typically rise. This is not just about providing temporary support; it’s about strategically delivering assistance when it's needed most. We continue to work closely with all key stakeholders – including state governments, civil society groups, international partners, and private sector entities like telcos and fintechs – to refine these programs. Moreover, we urge all Nigerians to be mindful of the current economic situation and avoid exploiting it for abnormal profits.

In addition to these cash transfers, our administration is deeply committed to empowering micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, along with nano businesses. Significant financial support is being directed to these enterprises to foster human capital development, economic growth, and financial inclusion. For instance, through the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, we launched the 3MTT program, aiming to develop technical talent across Nigeria in fields such as software engineering and cloud computing. This program is designed not just to aid businesses but also to enable our youth to participate in the global gig economy, earning competitive wages while contributing to our nation’s growth.

Our interventions extend beyond what some may call ‘cash handouts’. They are about creating a sustainable environment where Nigerians can innovate and thrive. By focusing on sectors like digital and creative industries, we are fostering growth and job creation, harmonizing efforts between monetary and fiscal bodies to build a stronger, more resilient Nigeria."

The Nation: You have been quoted in the past promising to pay Nigerians a minimum wage they can live on. What is delaying the unveiling of the new minimum wage? How do you manage a situation where many states without the Federal Government's resources may not be able to meet whatever commitments the government at the center makes [it] to workers?

Tinubu: I understand the concerns regarding the unveiling of the new minimum wage and how states will manage these changes, especially those with fewer resources. To address this, my administration has approved a provisional increase in the federal minimum wage to N35,000 per month for six months, two months of which have already been paid. This decision follows extensive consultations with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

In managing the situation with the states, we are working closely with them to ensure the new wage structure is practical and sustainable. Each state's unique financial situation must be considered. We are focused on strategies to help states strengthen their economies, considering factors like tax efficiency and economic diversification.
We are committed to ongoing dialogues with labor unions and state governments. This collaborative approach is crucial to ensure that the new minimum wage is fair, reasonable, and implementable across all states. Our goal is to balance the economic well-being of our workers with the overall financial health of the nation.

We ask Nigerians to be rest assured that our administration will not rest until we have delivered a sustainable solution in the best interest of Nigerians.

The Nation: One feature of the last few months has been your aggressive pursuit of foreign direct investment. What are the tangible results of these shuttles around the world?

Tinubu: It is essential to place our initiatives within the broader context of our economic recovery and growth strategy. This strategy encompasses several key reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, the unification of the naira's exchange rates, the adoption of the customs single-window, the streamlining of our tax system, and the enhancement and diversification of our revenues. These strategic moves are designed to enhance liquidity and create a more attractive investment environment for both domestic and foreign investors, thereby stimulating sustainable growth.

FDI is not ‘chicken change’. FDI is substantial, long-term financial commitments made by serious enterprises and investors. What is happening right now is that Nigeria is re-engaging with the global market - both foreign and domestic investors. We are telling the story of our significant and far-reaching reforms and rebuilding confidence in Nigeria as an accessible and safe investment. We are clearly communicating that ‘Nigeria is open for business’ and that the direction of travel is clear and fully committed.

So far, our pursuit of foreign direct investment has been met with positive outcomes. We've secured a $500 million deal with Germany to fund renewable energy projects, particularly in rural Nigeria. Additionally, through local enterprises, Nigeria will supply LNG yearly to Germany, starting in 2026, solidifying our role as a key global energy partner. Our focused efforts to attract European FDI are yielding fruit, notably with the $116 million French investment in the I-DICE program, aimed at creating 65,000 start-ups and 150,000 jobs, particularly empowering women. As announced on the sidelines of COP28 in Dubai, we're deploying 100 electric buses nationally, affirming our commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly initiatives and creating a platform for public-private partnerships in the mass transit category. Since this announcement we have received serious requests for co-investment opportunities from within Nigeria and across the world – Europe, India, China, and the Middle East, key global markets which our administration has been energetically engaging with.

Politics / Amanze Obi’s Spiral Of Lies by Ayade001(m): 12:43pm On Dec 15, 2023
By Bayo Onanuga

On Monday 11 December, I stumbled on the 6th, in the series of opinions about the last general election being peddled by Daily Sun columnist, Amanze Obi. I was shocked by the cocktail of lies and fallacies put forward by the writer, on why his candidate, Peter Obi lost the last presidential election and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won. This spurred my frantic search for the 5th edition. It was more of the same, indeed dangerous as Amanze tried, albeit fruitlessly, to instigate Christians and their leaders against President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. Believing so much in his concocted Islamic conspiracy against Christians, Amanze Obi wondered why there was no “fury”, or ‘outrage’ displayed by the Christians after Tinubu’s election.

In the two articles that I read, Amanze, disappointedly, packed too many falsehoods about the last election such that ignoring him will be a great disservice to our people, especially the younger, impressionable, easily excitable ones. To Amanze and his ilk, I will say it is too early to start distorting the story of the last election, with clearly revisionist misleading information, that one will only come across at beer parlours or market places.

In trying to decode Tinubu’s emergence as candidate of the APC, Amanze Obi invented a conspiracy of northern muslims who had “the temerity to insist on a muslim-muslim ticket as a condition for power shift to the south”. There was nothing of such. Tinubu went into the primary election to slug it out with Rotimi Amaechi, Yemi Osinbajo, both Christians and Ahmad Lawan, a muslim. Religion was not the issue at this stage. What was at stake was each candidate’s appeal to party delegates. Tinubu won a landslide victory, because many delegates believed he has the experience, political and national network to beat other candidates from the other parties and succeed President Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu, as candidate, saw himself as a nationalist. It was the myopic and parochial political opponents that tried, in vain, to define him by his faith. The opposition ought to have known that a man whose wife is a Christian, whose children are allowed to practice their own faith, cannot be stereotyped by his faith.

This worldview of the candidate explains why throughout his campaign, he did not appeal to the base sentiments of his religion, he did not see himself as a Jihadist, unlike another candidate that rallied clerics to see the election as a ‘religious war’. Tinubu sold his programme of action to make our country better to voters, even when he was the target of unprecedented vitriolic attacks by opponents, the worst political behaviour ever witnessed in our political history.

When Tinubu chose Kashim Shettima, as his running mate, he was reawakening the spirit of June 12, 1993 presidential election, in which an Abiola-Kingibe combination resoundingly won the election. The victory was cruelly annulled by the military junta, led by General Ibrahim Babaginda.

When Tinubu chose Shettima, religion was not part of his political calculation. He was focused on a higher ideal, placing factors such as competence, innovation, compassion, integrity, fairness, and adherence to excellence, above religious sentiments.

Tinubu’s statement after announcing Shettima’s nomination as his running mate is worth recalling:

“I am mindful of the energetic discourse concerning the possible religion of my running mate. Just and noble people have talked to me about this. Some have counselled that I should select a Christian to please the Christian community. Others have said I should pick a Muslim to appeal to the Muslim community. Clearly, I cannot do both.

“Both sides of the debate have impressive reason and passionate arguments supporting their position. Both arguments are right in their own way. But neither is right in the way that Nigeria needs at the moment. As president, I hope to govern this nation toward uncommon progress. This will require innovation. It will require steps never before taken. It will also require decisions that are politically difficult and rare.

“If I am to be that type of President, I must begin by being that type of candidate. Let me make the bold and innovative decision not to win political points but to move the nation and our party’s campaign closer to the greatness that we were meant to achieve.

“Here is where politics ends, and true leadership must begin.

“Today, I announce my selection with pride because I have made it not based on religion or to please one community or the other. I made this choice because I believe this is the man who can help me bring the best governance to all Nigerians, period, regardless of their religious affiliation or considerations of ethnicity or region”.

The result of the election in all the six zones showed that Tinubu’s political calculation worked. Just like it worked for Abiola-Kingibe in 1993.

It was not true that Tinubu ‘roundly lost the ‘Christian South’ as Amanze wrote. Indeed there is no such geographical or demographic division in our country. While we have a preponderance of Christians in the South-East and South-South, we cannot say the same of the South-West where the two predominant faiths have adherents. Tinubu won the South-West, and had very poor number from the South-East because the voters erected an iron curtain against other candidates, except Peter Obi, who belongs to their ethnic stock. Tinubu also had a good showing in the South-South states of Edo, Delta, Cross River and Rivers, where he had, at least the mandatory 25 percent of the votes. Again, Amanze was wrong to say that Tinubu did not have ‘the right appeal’ to the voters in the entire three zones in Southern Nigeria, as the facts above have demonstrated. The only place where the voters were blinded about Tinubu was in the South-East and all Nigerians know why that was so.

In the second part of Amanze’s article that I read, it was shocking that Amanze was still peddling the egregious lie that Peter Obi and not Bola Tinubu won the election, even when third-placed Obi still have second place Atiku Abubakar to surpass to claim the trophy.

Let me say loud and clear. Obi lost the election. INEC did not scheme him out. The so-called popular impression about his purported victory was the product of an echo chamber of Obi’s supporters. You all hoped Obi would win, you even conducted fake polls, but the reality of Nigeria’s electoral map made all the pre-poll projections unrealistic.

Of the three major candidates, Obi had the narrowest path to victory. Outside his home base in the South-East, part of the South-South and Lagos, where he sprang an electoral upset, Obi only showed presence in the northern part of the country in the predominantly Christian states, such as Nasarawa, Plateau and Benue, where he was checkmated by Governor Hyancinth Alia, in favour of the APC candidate, now President Tinubu. In more populous North-West states, Obi was not in contention. He was a political paper weight. Similarly, in Kwara, Niger and Kogi states, Obi had scant appeal. He suffered similar fate in Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe and Taraba.

It is uncharitable and malicious for Amanze to attribute Tinubu’s victory to other factors other than his popularity with the voters. In the three horse race, Tinubu was the pre-eminent favourite of the Nigerian people.

Obi’s supporters who often adduce extraneous reasons to Obi’s political Waterloo, often forget the APC was in control of 21 states before the election. Polls by the APC before the election showed that our candidate was destined to win at the first ballot, despite all the obstacles of currency and petrol scarcity and the incumbent’s unpopularity in some parts of the country.

The election result was an upset of sort as we did not expect a tight race.

No one in his right senses would have expected Tinubu to come back empty handed in states under the control of his party. Despite the upsets in several states, our candidate was able to muster the votes that matter, pulling 25 percent of the votes in 30 states, leading in 11, recording tight race in Katsina, Sokoto, with the presumed ‘northern candidate’. Not to forget, our candidate reaped a political windfall from the crisis in PDP, which boosted his votes in Rivers and Oyo.

Amanze Obi should desist from spreading fantasies about the last election. Tinubu won it free and fair. "Popular impression” not based on hard facts, does not win any election. Any candidate who wants to win a general election must work hard to win plural votes in four of the six regions that make up the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Peter Obi succeeded only in two and fell seriously short in the other four.

I will end with this story about the 1979 election, which Shehu Shagari won. In Ogun State capital, Abeokuta, the popular impression was that Shagari’s National Party of Nigeria would sweep the polls. The party was the noisiest, the most visible in the city as it had in its fold many prominent sons of the town. But an opinion poll conducted by the PUNCH newspaper showed contrarily that Awolowo’s Unity Party of Nigeria was headed to victory. The election result affirmed pre-poll prediction and also affirmed that Shagari and Awolowo would emerge the two leading candidates.

The PUNCH poll was unlike the ‘arrangee’ polls conducted by Peter Obi and his friends before the election. The latter gave Obi’s supporters false hopes, false expectations of a forlorn victory. Amanze, it’s time to shake off your disappointment and quit the business of election fortune-telling.

Politics / Why I Removed Fuel Subsidy — Tinubu by Ayade001(m): 5:32pm On Nov 22, 2023
By David Peter

Nigeria's 16th President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has justified his policy toward the removal of the fuel subsidy. Tinubu departed Abuja on Saturday for Berlin, Germany, to attend the G20 Compact with Africa (CwA) Conference hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Speaking in Berlin, Germany, Tuesday at the 10th German-Nigerian Business Forum, President Tinubu described his historical feats as an unusual success in revolt against criminality in the country which has strung the citizens over the years in an enslaved poverty.

According to him “Nigerians voted for me for reforms and from day one of my inauguration. Tinubu professed, “I started the reform, day one.”

He sarcastically said “If you didn't mention me in the Guinness Book of Records. I will try to find a way to insert myself.

“Because I did it without expectation. My inauguration speech didn't disclose what I would do.

“I removed the fuel subsidy that is a great burden and pipeline to fraud and irregularities.”

Tinubu reiterated that the subsidy was a “great burden to Nigerians from the moment he stepped into office.”

Regardless, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu initially unveiled that his administration had redeemed over a trillion naira within months of the removal of fuel subsidies.

The president, who made this assertion during a nationwide broadcast said the money saved would have been whacked on the inefficient fuel subsidy which only benefitted contrabandists and fraudsters in the country.

His words “In a little over two months, we have saved over a trillion Naira that would have been squandered on the unproductive fuel subsidy which only benefitted smugglers and fraudsters.

“That money will now be used more directly and more beneficially for you and your families. For example, we shall fulfill our promise to make education more affordable to all and provide loans to higher education students who may need them. No Nigerian student will have to abandon his or her education because of lack of money.

“Our commitment is to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of our people. On this principle, we shall never falter. We are also monitoring the effects of the exchange rate and inflation on gasoline prices. If and when necessary, we will intervene.

“I assure you my fellow countrymen and women that we are exiting the darkness to enter a new and glorious dawn. Now, I must get back to work to make this vision come true,” he stated.

Tinubu also said part of his government’s program was to roll out buses across the states and local governments for mass transit at a much more affordable rate.

“We have made provision to invest N100 billion between now and March 2024 to acquire 3000 units of 20-seater CNG-fuelled buses.

“These buses will be shared with major transportation companies in the states, using the intensity of travel per capita. Participating transport companies will be able to access credit under this facility at 9% per annum with 60 60-month repayment period,” he stated.

In October 2023, President Tinubu fulfilled his promise by handing over the first CNG bus to the State House to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal. The Project Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Micheal Oluwagbemi also disclosed that State governments have already indicated investment interest in the CNG Buses.

Apiece, on Tuesday Mr. Taiwo Adisa, General Editor, Nigerian Tribune Newspapers interviewed Chief Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

The Adviser assured Nigerians that the “Tinubu government will fulfill the promises made to our people. As President Tinubu always says, he asked for the job. I have no doubt he will deliver,” Onanuga said.

Politics / Akpabio Copycat Asiwaju's Renew Hope Mantra, Host Retreat In Akwa Ibom by Ayade001(m): 2:36pm On Oct 19, 2023
— David Peter

Again, Senator Obot Godswill Akpabio has ascertained himself as a political diplomat with terrific virtues of ethics in politics, craving for an upswing in Nigeria's economy irrespective of the political party a State chooses to belong across the Country.

Today, the uncommon Senate President of the 10th assembly, a member of the ruling, All Progressives Congress (APC) embarked his distinguished colleagues on a stint as all serving senators will en-masse in Akwa-Ibom state for 4-day legislative retreats.

It is no news that Akwa-Ibom state is governed by an opposition party, which appears to be the People Democratic Party (PDP). It is striking of a political opponent coaxed to drive the state economic layout of his rival party. Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio has perked himself as a spotlight to foster the tourism blueprints of a PDP sitting Governor, HE Umo Eno in Akwa Ibom State.

The political disposition demonstrated by Senator Akpabio is uncommon as Nigerian political patriot often rises to make their sameness party succeeds in governance, "If politician 'P' is not in our party, the probability of fostering their policies, agenda, economic is zero (0), despite they are opportune to do so." This common philosophy and political memoirs often transgress the scope of civic associates to formulate their political party to outshine the others as well as to woo the populace's belief for their unctuous national service and mythical liberation in the society.

In the case, of the ruling All Progressive Party, it negates following a glimpse of the Senate President emanating the political mastery of President Bola Tinubu renewed hope mantra, recounting the president's expression that "Nigeria belongs to all of us and we must make it work" to prove an action to his word, the ruling President appointed opposition party into his cabinet; former Governor of River State, Nyesom Wike, former Governor Ebonyi State, David Umahi and a few others. President Tinubu reckoned that it is a duty to serve the interest of the nationals irrespective of their party affiliation, as they are deemed fit.

Similarly, the Number One Citizen recognizes that a political party materializes to be an identity as well as a political vehicle to drive a political prospect. However, humanity and an affluent economy are President Bola Ahmed Tinubu catchphrases.

The Nigeria Senator en-massed in Akwa Ibom will not only strengthen the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) at the State, but will also stimulate local and SMEs which will indirectly create livelihoods, improve its Infrastructural development, and help conserve its natural environs.

While I commend the uncommon pilot, senator Godswill Akpabio for driving this affair to rekindle the senators and bloom the Akwa Ibom State Government's pocketbook. I do wish our lawmakers a productive retreat, unity, and progress to drive a prosperous scheme that will solidify our giant kingdom, Nigeria on their return to the hallowed chamber.

Politics / APC Female NEC Members, Zonal Leaders Disown Betta Edu by Ayade001(m): 12:01am On Jul 16, 2023
In what looks like a brewing crisis, the elected female national All Progressives Congress (APC) officers and zonal women leaders have expressed their dissatisfaction with the leadership of Betta Edu, the party’s National Women Leader.

Ogaga Ariemu, learnt this on Saturday in a letter by Hon. Omorede Osifo, APC Deputy National Treasurer, and eight other women leaders addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Recall that Edu and APC leaders had visited Tinubu at the Presidential Villa two days ago.

However, the APC-elected women executives and zonal leaders have unanimously passed a vote of no confidence in Edu and distanced themselves from her recent visit to the President.

They accused Edu of misrepresentation and self-aggrandizement during her visit to the Presidential Villa.

Accordingly, they stated that Edu does not represent the elected National Women Officials and Zonal Women Leaders of the party, contrary to reports circulating in the media.

Members of a diaspora group, Diaspora Support Network have unanimously adopted the Senator-elect for Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District, Senator Godswill Akpabio as the President of the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Convener of the group, Mr Paul Manner disclosed this to newsmen via Zoom from his base in the United States of America at the weekend. “We recall that as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio unleashed uncommon transformation on the State through infrastructural renaissance of world standard and human capital development which earned him the nickname as the one who turned boys into men.

“Courtesy of Chief Akpabio, today Akwa Ibom State has probably the best road network in Nigeria. His free and compulsory education policy backed by strong legal framework completely eradicated the houseboy/housegirl syndrome among Akwa Ibom children.

“The stadium he built, fittingly named after him as the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium is the only FIFA approved stadium in Nigeria. The health sector in Akwa Ibom State witnessed total revolution through the construction of Ibom Specialist Hospital and General Hospitals across the State. Indeed Akwa Ibom witnessed uncommon developments under Chief Akpabio.

“Whether as the Minority Leader of the 8th Senate or the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Akpabio had demonstrated uncommon passion and love towards the development of Nigeria. We in the diaspora have no doubt that as the President of the 10th Senate he would bring his vast legislative and political experience to bear on the development of Nigeria through legislation and oversight.

“We have observed that over the years Senator Akpabio has demonstrated uncommon leadership qualities, exceptional vision and political experience to steer the affairs of the Red Chambers and the National Assembly as a whole,” he said.

According to Mr Manner, Senator Akpabio against all odds worked assiduously not only in Akwa Ibom State but the entire South-South towards the success of the APC in the last general elections and deserved to be rewarded for his steadfastness and loyalty to his party.

Politics / Futile Pursuits: The Inevitable Failure Of Petitions Against Bayo Onanuga To The by Ayade001(m): 4:45pm On Apr 04, 2023
By David Peter

In exploring the legal, political, and strategic hurdles Bayo Onanuga, a renowned Nigerian journalist and Director of the Media, and Publicity, Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign of the ruling, All Progressives Congress, has been disputed for human rights violations online why exercising his civic right and duty. Assorted factions have called for his prosecution by the International Criminal Court (ICC), but there are miscellaneous reasons why such petitions will not see the light of day.

It is worth noting that the ICC is often criticized for its limited scope and lack of enforcement power. The court has faced criticism from African countries, In particular, for what some perceive as selective prosecution of African leaders while ignoring human rights abuses committed by leaders of other regions. This criticism has led some African countries to withdraw from the Rome Statute or threaten to do so.

Why the petition against Bayo Onanuga is a futile pursuit isn't limited to, as follows;
1. The ICC is a court of the ultimate resort and can only intervene if the National or Federal authorities are unwilling or unable to prosecute individuals for crimes within its jurisdiction.

2. The ICC has a limited mandate and jurisdiction. Therefore, the court can only prosecute individuals for the most serious crimes, Such as genocide, War crimes, and crimes against Humanity. Thus, Petitions against Onanuga would fail because none of this crime was perpetrated by him.

3. The ICC operates on the principle of complementarity, which means that it can only intervene if our national legal systems are unable or unwilling to investigate and prosecute such crimes. However, if the Nigerian courts are already investigating Onanuga, or if there are other national or international mechanisms in place to address the alleged human rights violations, the ICC may not be able to intervene.

4. The ICC operates based on universal Jurisdiction, which means that, it can only prosecute individuals who are Nationals of States that have ratified the Rome Statute, such a treaty was established by the court. Nota-bene, Nigeria is a signatory to the Rome Statute.

5. The ICC is a complex and time-consuming legal process, which requires significant resources and political will from states and international organizations. The courts have a limited capacity and competing priorities, this may mean that, petitions against Onanuga are not prioritized and will be dismissed due to lack of evidence or jurisdictional principle.

Hence, any legal action against Onanuga must be approached with a clear understanding of the legal and practical limitations of international law and institutions.

Postscriptum: While petitions against Bayo Onanuga to the ICC are dregs of time, the oppositions are faced with vast legal and practical hurdles that will impede them from thriving and this must be done through ethical legal channels and with a realistic understanding of the limitations of international law and institutions.

Religion / Pentecostal Fellowship Of Nigeria Accused Of Endorsing PDP Governorship Candidat by Ayade001(m): 4:41pm On Mar 06, 2023
We've heard how the Pentecostal fellowship have made efforts to strike a deal with Sandy On0r.

They have put up conditions for their support for Sandy.

While they met Sandy, the conditions were too much, and our reliable sources told us that Sandy asked them to remove one of the conditions for them to have a deal.

They agreed to remove one of the conditions which was more of a huge burden to Sandy.

They assured him of how they will market him to their church members.

But this same men of God won't tell their members that they had an agreement with Sandy.

They'll go ahead to deceive their members into what they know nothing about.

This is what men of God have turned the church into.

They use their congregation for political bargains but deceive members that they were told by the holy spirit.

Little wonder the more fake prophets and prophesies we have in our region.

This again has gone further to prove Marx's philosophy that religion is the opium of the masses.

"Men of God" must not in all ramifications give credence to Marx's philosophy to be true because their current actions are proving Marx's philosophy to be absolutely true.

"Marx saw religion as harmful to revolutionary goals: by focusing on the eternal rather than the temporal, religion turns the attention of the oppressed away from the exploitation and class structure that encompasses their everyday lives."

" In the process, religion helps to foster a kind of false consciousness that emboldens cultural values and beliefs that support and validate the continued dominance of the ruling class."

Our current religious leaders must spare us their selfish interest, instead of using the pulpit to sell personal sentiments.

Politics / 2023 Poll: PCC Predicts Victory For Tinubu, Says 21 States Already In The Bag by Ayade001(m): 2:24pm On Feb 23, 2023
David Peter

The Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says it is confident that its candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu would win the February 25 presidential election, with 21 states already in its kitty.

The assurance was given at the weekend by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the PCC's Director of Media and Publicity, during an interview in Abuja.

Onanuga said the APC is in a pole position, adding that "Asoft today there are 21 states under APC control. If out of 36 you already have 21 in your bag that means you are closer to victory."

Continuing, he said, "we have some states where we have alliances - like Oyo State, like Rivers State, even Enugu State. We are the only party that has the support that cuts across party lines. Sokoto is going to be a battleground. It used to be an APC state. Our party is waxing stronger and stronger in that state. We expect that state to swing to our side. We expect Bauchi also to swing to our side. We have tremendous goodwill in Bauchi state. If you put all these together, which no other party has, Asiwaju will win hands down on 25 February.

"We are very optimistic. We are not God but we believe that God is on our side. We believe that our candidate has worked very hard. We believe that the party has worked very hard. We believe that God is going to reward us with victory on 25 February."

Politics / Cash Crunch: Tinubu Is Not Against Cbn's Cashless Policy - APC PCC by Ayade001(m): 1:55pm On Feb 23, 2023
By David Peter

The APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) has come out to say that the Party's flag-bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is not in any way against the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Speaking in an interview session at the weekend in Abuja, on speculations that the naira swap implementation by the CBN was aimed at truncating Tinubu's chances at the poll, Mr Bayo Onanuga, Director, Media and Publicity of the PCC, said Tinubu was only concerned about the effects of the naira swap and petroleum scarcity on the masses.

He said while the APC presidential candidate was not against the cashless drive of the apex bank, the timing for its implementation was however wrong.

Onanuga said the naira swap and fuel scarcity crises coming at the same time was not good for the party and the country's democracy, adding that Tinubu was however right to have spoken against it.

"He (Tinubu) went to Abeokuta to speak about it that he's suspecting some kind of sabotage from those he called the fifth columnist. We had reports of fuel being diverted to neighboring countries where these saboteurs are making a lot of money, sometimes twice or three times the price that NNPC is selling fuel in Nigeria.

"Our candidate made this an issue and alerted government. That government should find a solution. I can report that as at today Abuja does not have problem of fuel anymore. I learned that in Lagos fuel scarcity has also eased. I'm sure in other parts of the country fuel will soon be delivered to many stations and this crisis will be over.

"For the currency swap, as the CBN calls it, our candidate is not against a cashless economy. He's an accountant. He understands how these things work. He knows the benefits to the economy. But he reels against the policy coming at this time - some few weeks to elections. Of course you have seen the public resentment against it.

"The CBN is expected to collect N3.3trillion from Nigerians, and I learned as at the last count close to N3trillion has been collected by commercial banks. And now what has the CBN offered in return? N400billion, some say N600billion. This is the grossly inadequate. You have taken about N3trillion and you are returning to the economy N600billion believing N600billion is enough to take care of the cash you are withdrawing, and is N600billion enough to enforce a cashless economy in Nigeria. This is an unmitigated disaster. The CBN has shown that it doesn't know what it was doing otherwise it would not have embarked on this programme at this point in time," he said.

The PCC Media and Publicity Director said it was also tempting for one to assume that the CBN policy was not done in good faith, because according to him, the apex financial institution was no more apolitical since its Governor once attempted to contest for the presidency.

Speaking further, he said the aftermaths of the policy were quite obvious as Nigerians were now going through hell to access cash as little as N5,000 from the bank.

Onanuga wondered how the CBN cashless policy is expected to work in a country where about 60 per cent of the population do not have bank accounts and rely heavily on cash to transact their daily businesses.

He, however, added that the decision of the CBN to pursue cashless policy was based on faulty and erroneous statistics that could not be validated against reality.

Speaking with newsmen at the 3-day policy and strategic training, Friday, held at the Women Development Centre in Abuja, she intimated that the objective of the NGOs and CSOs Directorate is to profile and possess the database of credible Civil Societies and Non-governmental Organizations that will serve as a chart for the APC Presidential Campaign Council in the Federal Capital Territory.

Laniyi maintained that the training is pertinent in ensuring the party’s victory at the 2023 general elections which are less than 15 days away.

The Director noted that her committee must get abreast with the current digital procedures by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ahead of the Presidential election.

"To ensure we look at the distinct indices, our strategic plans, and the coordination of the Presidential election that will lead to the emergence of our candidate, we have trained over 136 members on BIVAS technology, the new guidelines that relate to the transmission of results among others, she disclosed. "This training is fundamental to up the skill of participants in getting opportunities within and off the political sphere as a certified trainer."

According to her, "They had a brainstorming session where strategies were adopted for winning their polling unit and canvassing for our candidate, which by God's grace the trainees will implement the template to the grassroots and we shall scale up the victory."

Secretary-Director of 'Our Consequent for Development Initiative,' Mr. Kayode Lawal, who doubles as the key facilitator, affirmed that the NGOs and CSOs play significant roles in field implementation when it comes to elections in Nigeria, admitting that such responsibility warrants an individual to have adequate background and knowledge of the current INEC electoral techniques.

"We must develop a module and create a thematic template in the area of the election, conduct, security, incidence, and 2022 Electoral Act as passed by the National Assembly, specifically to emphasize the newly introduced ways of conducting election through the Bimodal Identification Verification System (BIVAS) for the presidential election."

Earlier, the APC National Deputy Women Leader, Zainab Ibrahim, commended the convener, Mrs. Adedayo Benjamins Laniyi, and her team, for their moral efforts toward winning the Tinubu-Shettima ticket.

This forthcoming election, she explained, "will show us what you have done in history. You can google Tinubu/Shettima's role in Education, Security, Youths empowerment amongst others for providence made them perform while serving as governors in their various states, even when they never knew it will snowball into what we see today. I see the ticket as a divine ticket."

"Tinubu-Shettima anticipates from us, extensive support, backing, and loyalty. What the NGOs & CSOs are doing is very strategic and a roadmap towards gaining victory for the APC presidential ticket. I congratulate you all for this hard work and commitment you have achieved thus far to ensure victory."

Also commenting, the Director General, National Centre for Women Development, Hon. Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir, admonished the trainees to disseminate the knowledge to the grassroots and voters in their communities to be oriented in the current electoral policy, admitting that, it was the only way to amass a plethora of triumphs and success for the ruling, All Progressives Congress Presidential ticket. She further urged the members to remain ardent and supportive of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket.

Extolling members for their commitment towards the assigned task, the North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Leader, Princess Zahra Mustapha-Audu, said, "You have done so well and to be honest with you, you have given us hope. "The vitality and strength to keep going which by the Grace of God, there are millions of groups out there doing same for Asiwaju's victory.

According to her, "Nigerians need Asiwaju/Shettima, more than they need us. I will be very honest with you, where we are today, we need them more than they need us and this is the message we need to be disseminating.

"We need a Nigeria where our children can go to school regardless of what our income is, we need a Nigeria where we don't need to worry about where our next meal is coming from, we need a Nigeria where our country is safe, where we can come out from our house without worries about banditry, we need an old Nigeria where we wake up in the morning and say we are going to Kaduna, and arrive there safely.
For us to have that Nigeria, we need Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu," she asserted.

Continuing, she warned, "let us not be deceived by those coming out to lobby for the office, eight years of being a governor are enough for anyone to transform anywhere, and if you can't do it, you can't do it anywhere."

Applauding the convener of the program, Mustapha-Audu remarked, "I know your leader, she is from a Christ-like background. She is a leader full of compassion for humanity. I am well certain that once she gets there, she will touch your lives. Likewise, I thank you for the efforts you dedicated to this exercise."

In attendance at the grand final of the certified workshop was the APC Presidential Campaign Council FCT Director NGOs & CSO, Hon. Politics / Orji Kalu Debunks Latest Fake News On Tinubu’s US Visa by Ayade001(m): 9:51pm On Dec 03, 2022
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has debunked the latest fake news being circulated by the opposition on Asíwájú Bola Ahmed Tinubu, regarding his US visa.

A news blog being used by the opposition, Pointblank News claimed that Tinubu has been denied a visa to the U.S.

The false news was similarly spread in September, but debunked with information that Tinubu did not need a new visa as he has a subsisting one that will not expire till November next year.

But the mischievous opposition recycled the lie today.

The Tinubu campaign did not need to shame the purveyors of falsehood, by itself.

A befitting response was issued by Senator Orji Kalu on Facebook, as he wrote:

“As the election draws closer, the opposition will spread more fake news against our presidential candidate but we should always ignore and keep our eyes on the ball.

“The news that Tinubu was denied visa to the USA is as fake as other fake news. Tinubu postponed the travel himself and was never denied visa.

“The State Department of the US confirmed to me that Tinubu will be received in the third week of December.

“As the presidential candidate of our party with outstanding personality, he will be war

Politics / APC PCC Demands Apology From Thisday by Ayade001(m): 7:10pm On Nov 20, 2022
ThisDay newspaper carried its campaign of calumny against our presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, too far on Friday, with a fake report about the death of a respected medical doctor, Kolapo Akande, who was the husband of Lola Akande, a commissioner in Lagos.

The report denigrated Kolapo Akande and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing the duo of being involved in drug trade.

Not caring a hoot about the need to respect the dead, the paper painted Akande as a drug lord, who had ‘lived under the radar’ and had stayed aloof from people”. Unknown to ThisDay, their imagined ‘hibernating’ Kolapo was an Accord Party candidate for the House of Representatives some years back.

But in the paper’s pursuit of its jaundiced, cash and carry journalism, it gleefully reported that Kolapo Akande was the same Mueez Akande mentioned in the shuttered 30 year-old drug investigation against our candidate in the U.S.

But it was all false. ThisDay wrote a mere fiction and had relied on a false tweet by one David Hundeyin, a hatchet writer and so-called investigative journalist, who has identified himself as a Peter Obi supporter.

Any reasonable publishing house ought to be wary about any information coming from such a biased person. But not ThisDay. Anything that portrays Tinubu in a very bad light is fair game, as such a report will justify the tons of Naira that accompanies it.

The report has, however. turned into a huge embarrassment for the paper and further dented its credibility and integrity. ThisDay should be truly ashamed of its ethical standards. It descended so low that even the despicable David Hundeyin, said to be desperate for asylum in the UK, excoriated the newspaper for the report.

Without sounding remorseful, Hundeyin recanted his tweet and wrote: “Not sure why ThisDay published such a story without confirming it, but my information now is that Dr Kolapo Akande who just died is the elder brother of Mueez Adegboyega Akande, (who is still very much alive.) As such I’m taking down my earlier tweet with the ThisDay story link”.

In his earlier full tweet, the reckless journalist, whose modus operandi is more like Alex Jones of the U.S. based Infowars had suggested that Tinubu masterminded Kolapo Akande’s death, quoting fictional ‘back channel sources’.

What a wicked, unconscionable lie!

At the heart of journalism is the credo that a medium should seek to verify its information before dishing it out to the public. ThisDay, just like its sister Arise TV News, has now clearly shown that it does not operate by such standards.

We have waited for the past 48 hours, hoping the paper will show some remorse and apologise to the Akandes and Asiwaju Tinubu over the malicious report. We are surprised it has not taken such a dignified step.

WE now formally demand a full apology from the paper and its publisher, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, for the utterly unprofessional report.

We hope henceforth the paper will seek to be driven by the ethical ideals of journalism and not other material considerations. In view of the established evidence of violation of the core ethics of journalism, we demand that the Nigeria Press Council take appropriate disciplinary action against Thisday to save journalism at this sensitive period from the merchants of falsehood and abusers of the public trust that the press embodies.

We call on the Independent National Electoral Commission to invoke the relevant sections of the Electoral Act 2022 to sue Thisday and any other medium that commits flagrant violation of editorial rules to the courts.

These are the only remedies to the reckless journalism of Thisday.

They are the guarantees that the provisions of the Constitution mandating the Press as the Fourth Estate of the Realm shall be protected.

Politics / 2023 Gubernatorial Race: An Exigency For Women Inclusiveness, X-raying Gertrude by Ayade001(m): 3:34pm On May 18, 2022
By David Peter

The Constitution of Nigeria establishes a federal democratic republic system of government and guarantees its citizens the right to be elected, freedom of speech, freedom to assemble and form associations, and to vote. Despite the ordinance of Nigeria's law, Cross River State has been recording low participation of "competent women" in both elective and public offices, until the emergence of His Excellency, Sir. Benedict Ayade.

The analysis and scorecard of Cross River Politics at the 2019 general elections indicate that "women make up over 47 percent of registered voters for the 2019 elections."

Ahead of the gubernatorial race in 2023, it's requisite for a woman to be the second-highest-ranking official in the executive branch of Cross River State. Nonetheless, bidding for such a diplomatic status requires a woman of definitive prestige who's a susceptible scholar, possessing excellent administrative integrity in politics.

Associate Professor Gertrude Nnanjar Njar, pedigree as a woman is quite intimidating, giving birth to, no fewer than 35 publications and lead author in both local and international journals, also amassing distinct awards and honors across 20 multinational countries.

Scholar Gertrude currently serves as the first female surveyor and Head of Departments, Surveying and Geoinformatics in the University of Calabar, a daughter of Ekpache Nkome in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Njar's, fitness for a quality representation in politics has to verge her the first female surveyor who was Special Adviser to the Cross River State Governor on Women Affairs.

Her enthusiasm to achieve the blueprint of the Cross River chart should not be erred, misjudge, or miscalculated discerning the acuity of women's peripheral in politics. A Jamaica singer and songwriter, Bob Marley, once sang “Who the cap fits, let them wear it.”

Prior to universal suffrage, provincial legislatures had granted women the right to vote. But, what happens after, Surveyor Gertrude, the Women Adviser, accrued over 47% of the voting strength of women? Njar, as a grassroots mobilizer, should not be coined as a political marshal tool who enlightened and assembled women to en mass their vote during the era of the election but should also be integrated into authority, as her credentials deemed her suit.

Her pairing with the APC Cross River 2023 gubernatorial candidate would harness the voting resilience among the women and also, spur women in rural communities, to come out en mass to vote for the ruling, All Progressives Congress, this would further promote the process of transformative leadership, citizenship and, women inclusiveness in Nigeria's politic.

According to Veronica Michelle Bachelet Jeria, “For me, a better democracy is a democracy where women do not only have the right to vote and to elect but to be elected.” Professor Gertrude, scorecards have eminently insured her to be paired as the Deputy Governor's, prospect.

Politics / Defection Ruling: Judiciary Stood On Tabernacle Of Truth, Says Ayade by Ayade001(m): 9:00am On Apr 13, 2022
Cross River state governor, Professor Ben Ayade has expressed gratitude to the judiciary for standing firm on the side of truth in his defection judgement.

Speaking Tuesday in Calabar during a victory rally organized by Cross River All Progressives Congress (APC) Lobby Group to celebrate the court victory, Governor Ayade declared that as a state that requires federal government support, "Cross River has no business with opposition politics. When the time comes, we will show them we are APC state.”

Continuing, the Governor said: "It is God that brought me to this office and only God can take me out. That is why I'm here to say thank you to the judiciary for refusing to submit to the imbecilic stupidity and irresponsible conduct of people who believe that money and power belong to them.

"I'm happy that the judiciary rose and said we are too celebrated, we are too cerebral to bow to shenanigans. So we thank God. First, I give God almighty the adoration, the praise, and secondly, I thank the judiciary for standing for justice, for standing firm on the tabernacle of truth.

"As a lawyer, I know how a Governor can be removed from office and defection from one party to another is not one of them. The Supreme Court has already settled it that votes belong to a candidate, a human being with flesh and blood and not a party. A party is just a vehicle, an agent, so the votes belong to me, the votes belong to Ayade"

While calling on Cross Riverians to go out en mass to register and obtain their Permanent Voters Cards, the Governor reiterated his support for power shift to the Southern senatorial district of the state in line with Cross River's governorship rotational principle.

According to him, his administration is youth-friendly and will continue empowering them politically with the view to enthroning a generational leadership shift.

Speaking earlier at the rally held at the Air Force Primary School field, Margaret Airport International Airport, the APC National Woman leader and immediate past state Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, paid glowing tribute to the governor's leadership qualities saying he has redefined governance and politics in Cross River.

On his part, the state Commissioner for Finance and Coordinator of the Cross River APC Lobby Group, Asuquo Ekpenyong Jnr described Ayade as a lover of youth, recalling how the governor appointed him Commissioner at the age of 29 in 2015.
