Travel / Re: Nigerians Abroad. Share Your Experience With Racism And Discrimination by ayandee: 5:28pm On Sep 21, 2023
I will share a bit of what i have discovered in my short stay here in Canada. Whites are very accepting of you as a black provided you stay within certain defined limits that exists in their subconscious minds. They are very ok with you working as a clerk, an entry-level officer in a bank or in a government agency or working as a support or care giver. They start rolling their eyes when you start breaking borders and moving into more traditional, professional roles which they consider their enclaves e.g being a lawyer or getting into management. You need to wear a thick skin at that level.

With black medical doctors and nurses though, they really don't have a choice. Same goes with IT. There's a shortage of professionals in those fields. I call them the "colour blind" professions.

With time, determination, a positive outlook, and having the right qualifications and skills, I find it's easier to break through those racial barriers than the nepotism and tribalism that exist in Nigeria.

most people abroad don't give this kind of advice to their own siblings. You see them arranging all sorts of japa opportunities for them (study visa, visitor visa, sibling sponsorship for PR etc). But they will come online to discourage others. I am all for legal migration.

Canada's social security system for children from low-income families and seniors from age 65 is one of the best in the world.

Working with the agencies delivering benefits has broadened my understanding of the values and ideologies underlying the Canadian system. It's based entirely on empathy for vulnerable people (children, disabled people, widows, orphans, and old people from age 65). The social safety net for these groups are very strong. A 65 year old with no other income at old age who has lived all his life in Canada would get almost 2000 CAD monthly to take care of himself. If they miss their cheque in the mail, another must be re-issued immediately so they dont lack money. We trust they will return the duplicate because they will. Their mortgages are paid off already at that age. It's the reason they live very long and it's the reason the working class is taxed. It's a wheel that revolves.

So, it's not all about how much one person is able to accumulate in their bank account. It's better to live in a society where taxes are put to good to use.

This reminds me of a couple who came to the UK in September 2021 via study route. The husband was the student while the wife was the dependent and working full time as a domiciliary care worker to support clearing her husband's outstanding tuition fees as the husband was strictly working 20hrs weekly as a student and covered their rent and feeding. Few months down the line, the company gave the wife a small car to be driving to their different service users' homes to provide care, the company gave her a fuel card and were responsible for maintaining the car which she drove home daily even when off shift, the car was with her.

When she was off shift and the car packed in front of their residence, oga go dey insist on wifey to give him car keys so he could drive around for a while but wifey would refuse, reminding him that should he get involved in an accident or got fined for traffic violations while he is the one behind the wheels, she will be in trouble and insurance would not cover the damages. That caused a big strain in their marriage, oga reported her to relatives back in Nigeria of being selfish and arrogant. cheesy cheesy cheesy

You can imagine. He was not even concerned about his wife's job.

Hello good day everyone. Feels good to be here. I just receive LOA from Conestoga for May 2024 intake.
The issue now is that I am currently pregnant and estimated delivery date is April 2024. My question is, what are my chances of obtaining study permit from IRCC while pregnant? Also, is there a possibility of deferring the admission to Jan 2025 winter intake? Please has anyone been in my shoes before? Please I will really appreciate answers to my questions. Many thanks to everyone contributing positively to this forum.
Congratulations. IRCC won't be concerned about pregnancy and you wont be the first to study while pregnant. Since your delivery date is April, you still have 4months from resumption to plan for child delivery.

What's your support system in Canada like? Do you have family members here who can help you with the baby? Is your spouse coming with you? What's your financial situation? These are questions that determine whether a deferral would be necessary

Where a relative (a brother) has paid fees directly to the institution but the applicant is selling her own land to raise proof of funds, what documents does she need to show for study visa application?

The brother is only helping with tuition, nothing more.

Our MBBS is just the primary qualification required...to move up the ladder there you need to enroll in many of their own certified programs.
And bear in mind that MBBS took 6-8yrs of someone life to obtain.

One thing about IT is its strictly by skill or know-how, not by degree. You can see a skilled developer that can hack the backend of a website with just SSCE cert.

Interesting.

Likewise, if a foreign trained doctor (regardless of the country) wants to practice in Nigeria, they'd need to pass some Nigerian exams as well. That's the standard in most countries. As for IT; yes, it's skill based but many Nigerians got into that field by studying Computer Science or Engineering. The school might not have given them all the skills they need to thrive in the IT world but the degree was an eye opener for them; it gave them the foundation. Many people have moved to Canada and France with their French language degrees. A lot of people from that same Nigeria are working as professionals outside the country with thier Nigerian degrees.

My point is, individual experiences differ. Your university degree might not be useful to you (not necessarily your fault), but that doesn't make universities degrees generally useless. It gives some people the foundation to build on. The issue is when you expect that having one should automatically make life easier for you. Well, that's not the case even in the Western world. While Schools in the West are obviously far better than what you have in Nigeria, the students still succeed by self development. The schools mostly provide the enabling environment for them.

I know education is not so great in Nigeria, but those who couldn't make anything out of the little the system can offer should not discourage those who are willing to give it a go. A hungry man does not reject a plate of food cause it's not big enough to satisfy him. Unless you have plans of studying abroad, it would be shameful not to strive for a degree on the grounds that it's not good enough.

Just an opinion.

You are right. A university degree simply means you are diligent enough to show up in a university consistently for 4 or 5 years. It tells the employer that you will show up consistently for work. Degrees are based on a gradient. A first class means you have the ability to be thorough and committed. A 2.1 means you will always put in your best efforts. A 2.2 means you can be trained.

The fair was made open to the public and a lot of companies came and recruited people. He was happy to have that job at that time.

I wish churches could have more of that.

In the 1970s, there was huge respect for pastors and religious leaders so they got away with a lot of things. I guess that was why the police didn't press further. When they interrogated him and he denied seeing her, they just took his words for it. If it was today, they would have probed further.

Hello fellow Nairalanders,

I find myself at a crucial crossroad in life and would greatly appreciate your valuable insights and diverse perspectives. I have worked diligently in a private organization for 15 years, managing to save up to N20 million. Additionally, I own a 3-bedroom apartment. and a few plots of land in three different states in Nigeria.

Current Situation:
Recently, I was disengaged from my job, and this has prompted me to contemplate a major life decision. I am 45 years old, and my wife is 42 years old. Together, we have three children, two of whom are in secondary school.

Contemplating Relocation:

Given the circumstances, I have been seriously considering the possibility of relocating to another country with my family via study route. Two countries have caught my attention: the UK and Canada. I believe that I still have around 15 years of active career working life by the Grace of God, and I am open to exploring new opportunities abroad for the betterment of my family's future.

Reasoning:
The motivation behind this move is to provide my children with a better education and quality of life while also embracing new experiences. However, I am fully aware that this is not without risks, as it would involve utilizing my lifetime savings and making a fresh start in a foreign land.

Seeking Your Advice
:
I humbly seek your honest advice and opinions on this matter. Here are some key points to consider:

Family considerations: How will relocating impact my children's education and overall well-being?

Age and career transition: Is starting anew in a foreign country feasible, considering my age and accounting background as my profession?

Financial stability: Should I be concerned about using my savings for this move? What steps can I take to ensure financial security in a new country?

Visa and immigration: What are the challenges and best practices in obtaining permanent residency in the UK or Canada?

Job opportunities: How promising is the job market for accountants in these countries? Are there viable prospects for career growth?

Investment options: Alternatively, what investment opportunities in Nigeria can provide a stable income stream for my family?

Conclusion:
I am deeply grateful for any advice, personal experiences, or suggestions you can provide. Your valuable insights will play a significant role in shaping this crucial decision for my family's future.

Thank you all for taking the time to read and respond to my post. Your support means a lot to me and will help me make an informed choice.

Warm regards,

You don't have to go to Canada via study route. Like someone advised, learn French aggressively for one year. I mean learn it like your whole life depends on it. Attend french classes, listen to French people talk, speak French and become very comfortable with it. Depending on how much progress you have made studying, you can go to Togo or other francophone countries for 2 months for language immersion. Then write TCF canada or TEF Canada. You will spend money learning

This was what I did. I didn't go to Togo though.

This way, you can preserve your 20million and use it for proof of funds when you get invited to apply for Canada PR.

Join the Canada TEF thread and the express entry thread in travel section.

If you are considering this route:
1. Find out if you are eligible for FSW on Canada dot ca using good ielts score plus B2 french. If you have a masters already, that will be a plus.
2. If you are eligible, apply for credential evaluation with WES Canada.
3. Start your French journey and while at it, write ielts general.
4. With your language scores and WES report, create an express entry profile. When you get invited, apply for PR.

Not an easy route but it's doable.

It can't all be about buses or public transport.

The number of Nigerians who take public transport daily is less than those who do not.

To the latter group, and particularly if you live in a rural area, N8,000 every month for 6months will go some way. If the govt increases the amount, that's even better. Tge biggest problem with distributing money is how to get it to the people who need it. I just can't see how it will happen.

But generally, Nigeria is not only about people who have the loudest voice on social media. A government has to look at solutions that work best across all sections of society

I agree. Distribution is not an issue if the political will is tthere.During elections, politicians and their party members go to interior communities to get votes . They should apply the same effort in distributing palliatives.

Hello Nairalanders,

Please I need people with first hand experience to advice me on the best country that I can legally relocate to in the next 6 months with my son (Not UK pls). I was planning towards December 2024 initially but the situation of things in the country currently has made it become a thing of urgency, before the small savings I have is totally wiped off with forex and inflation rates.

Apply for Canada study visa so you can start studies in January. There is a Canada study thread in the travel section. Canada is English speaking. Depending on the funds you have, you can either go first then have your son join you in about 3 to 6months of your arrival.

At the same time, apply for studies in Europe (Sweden, Germany etc). You have to learn the languages for integration.

I would really appreciate suggestions/recommendations.

Thank you.

I earn slightly above what the OP mentioned, but believe you me, it's not been easy. If you live in Lagos, Abuja or PH and you are married with kids, you will understand. A 2 bedroom flat in an average neighborhood is over 700K. Cost of fuel and car maintenance is over 60/70K monthly in recent times. School fees for 2/3 children is over 200K per term (600/800K annually). Feeding takes over 100K monthly. Utilities and other miscellaneous dey ooo. Best thing na just to save enough and japa.
You have a perfect understanding of the situation on ground.
