Champions League draw: Barcelona versus Bayern Munich, Real Madrid against Juventus
The Bundesliga champions meet the Catalans in the semi-finals, while the titleholders face Massimiliano Allegri's outfit
Apr 24, 2015 11:44:38
Barcelona have been paired with Bayern Munich during Friday's Champions League semi-final draw in Nyon, while
Real Madrid will have to deal with
Juventus in the final four.
Luis Enrique's side cruised past Paris Saint-Germain the quarter-finals to book their ticket for the final four, while the Bundesliga outfit pulled off a fine comeback to see off Porto.
The semi-final encounter sees Bayern coach Pep Guardiola to the club where he enjoyed so much success between 2008 and 2012.
Both sides last met in the Champions League in 2012-13, when Bayern recorded a 7-0 win on aggregate in the semi-finals on their way to European glory. Meanwhile, Barca proved to be the stronger side of the two in 2008-09, recording a 5-1 win on aggregate in the quarter-finals.
Holders Madrid previously locked horns with Juventus in the group stages in 2013-14, with the Santiago Bernabeu side beating the Italians 2-1 at home and then recording a 2-2 draw in Turin in the second encounter. Juve and Madrid also met in the semi-finals in 2002-03, when the Serie A side emerged victorious, while Madrid beat the Italian champions in the final in 1997-98.
The first leg will be played on 5/6 May, with the second leg scheduled for 12/13 May.
The final will take place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on June 6.

PoliticsNigeria Joins League Of Biotechnology Nations, As President Signs Biosafety Bill by Aydesmond(op):
Nigeria’s dream of joining the league of countries using cutting edge technology to boost economic development appears to have come true following the signing into law on Saturday, April 18, 2015 the National Biosafety Agency Bill by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Observers have described the development as a milestone in the domestication of modern biotechnology in the country, saying that it will create more employment, boost food production and improve the prospects of farming.

Prof. Lucy Ogbadu, Director-General/CEO, National Biotechnology Development Agency, in a media statement described the National Biosafety Act as crucial in the management of modern biotechnology in the country.
She said: “Modern biotechnology has been identified as an important tool that can help countries to achieve food sufficiency/food security, industrial growth, health improvement and environmental sustainability while the Biosafety Act will give the legal framework to check the activities of modern biotechnology locally as well as imported GM crops into the country as well as providing avenue to engage Nigerian scientists/experts from different fields to identify and pursue solutions to our local challenges.

“The Biosafety Law also recognises the complex issues to be addressed by central authorities in the judicious application of modern biotechnology; it bases the deliberate release of GMO on Advance Informed Agreement (AIA).”
According to her, the issue of Biosafety Regulation in Africa is rapidly gaining momentum as more African Countries are embracing GMOs. Republic of South Africa, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Egypt already have biosafety laws and are currently growing and consuming GM crops. Kenya, Togo, Tanzania and Mali also have Biosafety laws.

“The African Union has developed a model biosafety law to assist member states develop their Biosafety Laws. However, to further strengthen Biosafety system in Africa, the AU-NEPAD-African Biosafety Network of Expertise project has been put in place to develop the capacity of member states in biotechnology and Biosafety. The ECOWAS Commission is also currently developing a common Biosafety Regulation in line with National Biosafety laws/Regulations for the sub-region,” she added .
Rose Gidado, Assistant Director, National Biotechnology development Agency/OFAB Nigeria Chapter Coordinator, submitted that Nigeria can without delay commercialise Bt-cotton, Bt-maize, Herbicide Tolerant (HT)-soya beans, which are already in South Africa, Burkina Faso and Egypt.

“This can lead to increased yield productivity to ensure food security and industrial growth especially in the ailing Textile Industries. It will also promote the quantity and quality of cotton that the Nigeria can export to other international countries,” she stated.
Gidado added: “The passage of this law will also ensure the much desired in-flux of foreign direct investment from notable world leading companies in Biotechnology thereby improving gross domestic product growth rate and increase job creation.

“The law will promote national security through the application of DNA finger printing for crime detection, paternity testing and identification. It will also promote active commercialisation of the research and development projects in our various universities and research institutes hence improves our economy as well as support the country to become one of the leaders in Biotechnology, particularly in Africa.”

Prof Ogbadu said: “At this juncture I would like to thank and appreciate very greatly, the National Assembly Members for the timely passage of the Bill and President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, for his quick assent. I have not also forgotten our strength and pillars of support: the Ministers of Science and Technology, Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as Environment (Dr Abdu Bulama, Dr Akinwumi Adesina and Mrs L.L. Malam respectively). We would ever remain grateful to you for this great and historical milestone achieved.
“Also on record, are our abled, tenacious and committed stakeholders: African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), United States Agency for International Department (USAID), United States Department for Agriculture (USDA), Program for Biosafety Systems (PBS), Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR), Federal Ministry of Environment (FMEnv), National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), National Agricultural Seed Council of Nigeria (NASCN), National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA), Michigan State University (MSU), African Biosafety Network of Expertise (AU-NEPAD ABNE), All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN), Cotton Ginnery Association of Nigeria (CGAN), Niger State Government, Gombe State Government, Imo State Government, Katsina State Government, Universities, Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN), Genetic Society of Nigeria (GSN), Nigerian Society of Microbiologists (NSM), Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST), Nigerian Institute for Oil Research (NIFOR) and Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), who guided us all the way through in driving this process to its logical conclusion.

“You stood strongly behind and beside us even when things became tough and hopeless, when there seemed to ne no way, you never gave up. Keeping hope alive is what has brought us this success. God will surely take us to the promise land

SportsF.a Cup Semi Final . Reading Vs Arsenal At 05:20 Pm by Aydesmond(op): 12:58pm On Apr 18, 2015
There have been 24 goals in the last three
meetings between Arsenal and Reading, which
bodes well for the neutral as the Berkshire club
taste their first FA Cup semi-final since 1927.
You'd need to be very old and have a very good
memory to recall that one (a 3-0 defeat to Cardiff
at Molineux).

Arsenal only need short memories for something
of a cautionary tale. Twelve months ago they
were eight minutes away from being beaten by
another Championship club, Wigan, at this stage.
In the end Arsenal squeaked through on penalties
to what was a record-equalling 18th FA Cup final.
There are big differences though - 12 months ago,
rather than being on an eight-game winning
streak, Arsenal had gone four games without a
win - one of which had been a 6-0 defeat by
Chelsea. Against Wigan, rather than having Olivier
Giroud and Alexis Sanchez threatening their
opponent's goal it was Lukas Podolski and Yaya
Sanogo.

Reading haven't had an easy route to Wembley;
they may not have faced Premier League
opposition but they've been drawn away in every
round and got the better of both Derby and
Cardiff. They are all but safe in the Championship
but haven't won a game since the quarter-final
replay victory over Bradford City a month ago.
In the pugnacious Pavel Pogrebnyak and
rumbustious Jamie Mackie they have strikers
who are a handful on most days. Jordan Obita
and Michael Hector are excellent defensive
prospects, Nathaniel Chalobah - on loan from
Chelsea - is a real presence in midfield and
Garath McCleary and former Arsenal trainee Hal
Robson-Kanu offer a threat from wide areas.
Arsenal will not take them lightly, but Reading
boss Steve Clarke is probably correct when he
says that his side will need to play "the perfect
game" to win.

Head-to-head

Arsenal have a 100% winning record from
their previous 12 meetings with Reading -
three in the FA Cup, three in the League
Cup and six in the Premier League.
The Gunners have scored 37 goals in those
games - an average of more than three per
match.

Reading

Reading have never reached an FA Cup
final.
They have only lost three of their last eight
FA Cup meetings against teams from
higher divisions (W4, D1) - although they
are yet to face one this year.
The Royals have conceded just two goals
in their five FA Cup matches this season.
They are without a victory in six league
games (D3, L3).
Steve Clarke's side have only won two of
their last 13 league games, suffering seven
defeats in that time.
Hal Robson-Kanu has scored three goals in
his last four FA Cup appearances this
season, despite only scoring one league
goal in 28 games.
Royals striker Yakubu has scored five goals
against Arsenal for his previous clubs.

Arsenal

Arsenal will be competing in their 10th
semi-final in the last 18 seasons - they
have won six of the nine they have
competed in under Arsene Wenger.
This will be their 28th semi-final
appearance (W18, L9), which is a record for
an English club, and they are on course for
a record 12th title.
Arsenal have won eight successive league
games, which is their best run since they
won nine in a row in the season they went
unbeaten in 2003-04.
The last time Arsenal lost an FA Cup semi-
final to a team from outside the top flight
was in 1973 against Sunderland.
Arsene Wenger's side have lost just one of
their last 38 FA Cup games against a lower
league side (W29, D8, L1).
The nine goals they've scored in this
season's FA Cup have been scored by
eight different players - only Olivier Giroud
has two.

EducationUNILORIN To Host The NASA International Space App Challenge by Aydesmond(op):
The International Space Apps Challenge is an
international mass collaboration focused on space
exploration that takes place over 48hours in cities
around the world. The event embraces
collaborative problem solving with a goal of
producing relevant open source solutions to
address global needs applicable to both life on
earth and life in space. This year we have over 30
challenges in four areas: Earth, Outer Space,
Humans and Robotics. NASA is leading this
global collaboration along with a number of
government collaborators and over 100 organizing
teams across the globe.
INTERNATIONAL
The Exploration of Space is by necessity a unified
international effort, and Nigeria is not left out as
diversity of experience and perspective inevitably
produces a better product.
This year, Ilorin would be joining Lagos, Calabar
and over 130 cities worldwide in bringing together
teams of technologists, students, scientists,
designers, artists, and developers to collaborate
and engage with publicly available data to design
innovative solutions for global challenges.
CHALLENGES
The Idea of a Challenge is so compelling because
it acknowledges the fact that the world is facing
serious challenges – and that we all have to work
together to approach them. While this year, 2
Finalists teams from Ilorin would be offered
prizes and then fly to Lagos to compete at the
National finals, the global award includes an
opportunity to attend a NASA launch.
Globally, the focus is to enable 48hours of highly
engaged collaboration by utilizing openly available
data, supplied through NASA missions and
technology as well as the talent of volunteers
from the planet to advance space exploration and
improve the quality of life on Earth.
PARTICIPATION
Interested participants should register at
http://2015.spaceappschallenge.org and signup
to attend at their preferred city. Everyone is
encouraged to take a look at the challenges, start
brainstorming on possible solutions now and form
teams or decide to join a team at the event.
