I am not a politician, but I am a friend of General Muhammadu Buhari and the things that have been said about this exceptional Nigerian will make the stomach of anyone who truly knows him sour. Nigerians cannot stand up to him when it comes to character and integrity. It therefore appalls me when people whose only credentials are that the Economic and Financial Crimes, Commission (EFCC) has stopped chasing them around because they know how to double speak now have the audacity and effrontery to question the character of a man like General Buhari. I do not make a joke of it when I say General Buhari is an exceptional Nigerian and an incident which I want to share here with Nigerians gave me that conviction a long time ago and greatly influenced my own life as a public servant. I lived in the United Kingdom in the 90s and in the late 90s I was encouraged to return to Nigeria by my friend General Buhari. It also coincides with when he was Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF). I used to spend most of my time in Nigeria with him and his family and I noticed that his two grown daughters who were undergraduates at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, were always at home because of the unending strikes in Nigerian universities at the time. I did not like the situation so on one of my visits I got the prospectus and brochures of some educational institutions in the United Kingdom and decided to encourage him to send these kids to institutions in the UK, where they could school without interruption. Because of how busy he was at the time, it sometimes took days to find a moment alone with him, so I finally did find a moment alone with him, and I brought up the issue of his kids always being at home on strike and suggested his sending them to the U.K to school. I quickly brought out the brochures and prospectus and I believed I made a very strong case. He then asked me what the cost would be and thinking the cost would not be an issue since I was speaking with the head of one of the most powerful and richest institutions in the country at the time (as well as a former Head of State of Nigeria), I boldly opened the cost pages of the brochures and tried to work out the cost to him. What he said at the time stunned me. General turned to me and asked me where I expected him to get that kind of money and I could not believe the question as I am sure many Nigerians will not believe. First, I could not believe that as PTF chairman, he would find the school fees an issue. Afterall, he was presiding over what was unarguably the richest public institution in the country at the time and others in his shoes would have found a way to “afford” it from their public offices. But not General Buhari. What he did at the time made me see him as an exceptional Nigerian and you are all free to confirm or verify this. General Buhari sold the only property he owned in Victoria Island at the time and it was with that fund that he sent his kids to school. I do not know of many Nigerians who as PTF Chairman would have done what he did and, from then on, General Muhammadu Buhari became my hero and the epitome of integrity and honesty in public office to me. The General Buhari I know will never come out to claim a qualification he does not possess and for charlatans and people of questionable character to call for his arrest for forgery is a great insult to honesty itself. I know that Nigeria has become a country where anything goes, but insulting our heroes because of politics should not be one of them. This is just one instance, as there are several instances that I can cite here, but time and space will not permit me. So, let’s put politics aside and celebrate our heroes, because I do not know of any man of greater integrity than General Muhammadu Buhari (GMB |

Most people love and appreciate their parents. We don't doubt that. The problem is, parents can't tell this unless you show it by the way you treat them. Sometimes adult children can bring heartache to their parents without realizing what they're doing. We've boiled it down to five main ways this happens. If you are a parent of adult children, you may recognize some of these. If you're the adult child, you may be in for an awakening. As parents age, their physical needs may change but their need for your love never does. Check to see if you're doing any of these. 1. You don't call them much Time just flits by, and you realize it's been a month since you last called your parents to check on them or to share what's happening in your life. You may be thinking, well, they can call me anytime they want. There's no question; parents need to call their children, as well. Here's the thing, they don't know your schedule, and they don't want to interrupt you at the wrong time. Or they don't want to trouble you with their problems. And yet, they want you to care. You need to take the initiative and call them, at least some of the time. Even just a short call to see how they are feeling. Ask them what they did that day then share what you are doing. Be sure to include some good news. Too often, the only news shared is the bad. Being in on at least part of your life will bring them more happiness than you can imagine. If they lay on a lot of unwanted advice, just say, "Thanks, Dad, I appreciate your concern. I was just thinking about you and wanted to know how you're doing." Don't forget to say, "I love you." That's music to their hearts. 2. You ask them for money Some kids only call when they need money. Don't do that. In fact, don't ask them for money at all. You're an adult and capable of providing for yourself and family. Your parents have worked hard for what they have, and they deserve to keep it for their needs. As their lives wind down they have no idea what expenses lie ahead. They need that retirement nest egg for the unknown. It's comforting to them to have that security. We know some children who've bled their parents dry, and then when the day came and the parents needed the money to live on it was gone. That's not fair. Don't ask your parents for money. If you owe them for some you've already "borrowed," pay it back as soon as you can. Lovingly help them protect what's theirs. They need to be able to enjoy it in their later years. 3. You forget their birthdays Parents love to be remembered on their special day. It doesn't have to be a fancy celebration, just a remembrance. You know how you feel when you receive a gift from them. They aren't much different. They like it, too. Find out the things they enjoy. A young couple we know gives their parents a gift card to their favorite restaurant, and they thoroughly enjoy it. If you don't have the money for a gift, you surely have the money for a card. Receiving a card in the mail from an out-of-town child brightens any parent's day. A phone call is great, too. If you live nearby, drop by with a hug and good wishes. Let them know you're thinking of them, and wish them a happy birthday. You might even add, "I'm sure glad you were born. I love you, Mom." Some children invite the family over to celebrate a special birthday. Turning 70 is a lot more fun when you're surrounded by those you love. 4. You don't offer them your help You may be thinking, hey, I told Dad to let me know if there's anything I can do for him, but he hasn't told me of anything. He's probably hesitating because he thinks you're too busy, or he's afraid you didn't really mean it. How about suggesting something to him? Look around and see the needs. Older people are advised to stay off ladders because their balance is impaired, and it's too risky. How about offering to come over, climb that ladder and clean out their rain gutters. A friend's son recently did that for his parents, and they were extremely grateful for the help. A little help from you will go a long way in helping your parents feel loved. 5. You don't include them in your family events They don't need to be included in everything but for the main events, invite them. They want to be part of special occasions, such as holiday dinners, a baptism, a concert your child is in, weddings or a vacation. Let them enjoy being with you and your family when it fits. Sometimes just an invitation to Sunday dinner at your house will brighten their day. If they invite you and your family over for dinner, accept the invitation and show up. Is this what you want? Look at how you are treating your parents and ask yourself if this is the way you want your children to treat you when they're grown. They are learning how by watching the way you treat your parents. It's a lesson they won't forget. If you're not measuring up, it's not too late. You can make a change this very day. Begin by picking up the phone and calling your parents right now. |

Dear Compatriots, As we prepare to go to the polls tomorrow, I have come before you this morning to express my immense appreciation for the opportunity you gave me to lead this great nation of ours in the past four years. I also wish to place on record, once again, my sincere gratitude for the support you have given my administration without which the significant progress we have made in recent years would not have been possible. In spite of the many challenges we have had to contend with since 1999, our present democratic dispensation continues to endure and grow stronger in keeping with the yearnings and aspirations of our people. We have all worked very hard to nurture and strengthen our democratic institutions and promote the good governance practices which they were designed to deliver for the better well-being of our people. I believe I can say without fear of contradiction that we all clearly cherish the democracy we now have and will never willingly give it up for any other form of governance. This much-cherished democracy of ours is about to be put to the test once again. I urge you all to troop out en-masse to peacefully perform your civic duty of voting for leaders of your choice tomorrow. As we do so, let us all – political party leaders, contestants, party members, party agents, supporters and ordinary voters alike, be very conscious of the fact that the eyes of the entire world are on us. We must therefore comport ourselves in a manner that will further strengthen our democracy and consolidate our place in the comity of truly democratic nations. I made a commitment on assumption of office to progressively deliver freer, fairer and more credible elections in our country. In keeping with that commitment, the Federal Government has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) all necessary support to ensure that it conducts very successful elections tomorrow and on April 11. We have all been assured that INEC is fully ready for the elections. I believe that we can all trust that they are certainly more ready now than they may have been before security issues and other concerns necessitated a re-scheduling of the dates for the 2015 general elections. As an administration, we welcome the fact that millions of Nigerians who were yet to receive their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) as at February 14, and would therefore have been unfairly disenfranchised if the polls had gone ahead on that date, have seized the opportunity of the re-scheduling to collect their cards and can now exercise their right to vote tomorrow. We are also glad that our gallant Armed Forces have successfully stemmed the seizure of Nigerian territories in the North-East by the terrorist group, Boko Haram. They have recaptured most of the communities and territories formerly occupied by the insurgents, making it possible for thousands of internally-displaced Nigerians to begin returning to their homes and communities. I heartily commend the very courageous men and women of our Armed Forces for the immense sacrifices which they continue to make in defending the nation and protecting its citizens. I also thank all Nigerians for keeping faith with us over the past six weeks. I call on all political parties and politicians in the country to allow the free, unfettered will of our people to be expressed without any hindrance in the coming elections in keeping with the hallowed principles and tenets of democratic governance which we all profess. The will of the people freely expressed through the ballot is the bedrock of all democracies and ours cannot be an exception. Let us all therefore be prepared, as true democrats, to graciously accept the outcome of the elections as the rightful choice of our people from whom all political powers in our democracy must emanate. My administration has done its utmost best in the past four years to deliver on our promise to positively transform our country. Tomorrow’s election is another very important milestone as we continue our march towards the fulfillment of our God-given potential for greatness. The election offers us another opportunity to empower leaders of our choice once again, and to show the world that genuine democracy is alive and well in our beloved nation. I will like to restate my belief that no political ambition can justify violence or the shedding of the blood of our people. I reaffirm once again, my personal preparedness to ensure fair play during the elections and to deploy the resources and institutions of state only in the manner prescribed by our laws. Let me warn, however, that as President, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, I am under oath to protect the lives of all Nigerians and the security of our country at all times. I will never abdicate my responsibilities in that regard. Democracy allows dissent. It encourages differences and even fervent disagreements. But elections must never be mistaken for war or an opportunity to set fellow citizens against each other and tear our beloved nation apart. Those who may harbor any intentions of testing our will by unleashing violence during the elections in order to advance their political ambitions should think again as all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure that any persons who breach the peace or cause public disorder during or after the elections are speedily apprehended and summarily dealt with according to our laws. The nation’s security agencies are also fully prepared and ready to deal decisively with any group or persons who attempt to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the elections or cause any form of public disorder. Our dear country, Nigeria is the largest democracy amongst black nations of the world. We are a nation of great accomplishments, with a proud history of evolving affinities. Let us go out tomorrow to vote peacefully and set a fitting example of political maturity for other emerging democracies to follow. I wish you all and our dear nation, very peaceful and successful elections. May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I thank you all. |
Please PDP put more effort to disqualify Buhari o, because GMB have started winning already. Have already sowed my celebration cloths waiting for GMB to be announced the winner. |
If the court disqualify Buhari, the outcome is simple election will not hold because even the military would not be able to control the violence. |
