This is a commendable effort but there are some errors which others who may start theirs need to address, which can cause chicken losses. Poultry farming is sensitive and the errors should be kept to the barest minimum. Some of the errors that i have observed while reading the posts on this blog are as follows: 1) The outer view of the Chicken pen has a construction error. The roof is supposed to have an overhang of at least 50 cm on all sides (front and sides). The purpose of the overhang is to prevent rainwater and excess sun rays entering the chicken pen. 2) In one picture, the steel feeders were laid on the floor. They are supposed to be hung from the roof and to level with the back of the standing birds. By lying them on the floor, the chickens will easily soil the feed in the feeders by walking in it and defecating in it.Their droppings contain ammonia which is a health hazard which can cause serious infections. It is much safer and wiser to suspend the steel feeders from the roof with wire. 3) I observed that charcoal heat was used to provide heat for the chickens in the brooding stage.Charcoal may be the cheapest but it is not recommended for heating in the brooding stage because it can not provide steady and uniform heat which the chickens require at the brooding stage i also observed that the charcoal pots were not covered with wire netting to protect the chickens from getting too close to the heating pots and getting burnt to death. 4) In another picture, i observed that the minimum space requirements for day old birds was not observed. There were too many little chickens in the brooders house in the picture and i observed that many of the little chickens would not have easy access to the plastic drinkers which risk is exposing some of the chickens to dehydration and death from thirst. 5) In another picture where there were day old chicks, there were papers laid on the floor which was a right step as it will enable the chickens identify their feed. However i observed that the was no wood shavings under the papers.Wood shavings should have been spread under the papers to provide a bedding and better comfort for the birds. 6) The litter was too thinly spread on the floor in one of the photos. The normal thickness/depth should be 4-6 inches, to be able to absorb the moisture from the chicken droppings and for easier evacuation of the droppings. When setting up your own poultry farm, take steps to ensure that the errors highlighted are avoided to avoid avoidable chicken losses, infections and outbreak of diseases. Poultry egg production is more profitable because the market in Nigeria is large and the demand pattern is inelastic and in fact inexhaustible. Get details of profit potentials from www.johnayodele. |
Where were the shareholders when the Bank directors were mismanaging the banks? Taking CBN to court is a belated and worthless exercise Nothing will come out of it. Guaranteed!. I was also a shareholder of Afribank,PHB and Spring Bank. CBN acted wisely, rather hastily but in the overall interest of the economy. |
Both are profitable A layer chicken will lay an egg in 24-36hours i.e an egg a day or 2 eggs in 3 days and can lay consistently for at least 15 months before diminishing returns set in. Normally, laying continues up to 18 months but at a diminishing rate after 12-15 months. At the end of the laying period, you will sell the chicken as an old layer for about N700.00 in Lagos around Christmas. So if you have 500 healthy layers, you will get about 13-14 crates daily from about 22 weeks - 72 weeks. The challenge in the business is the ability to maintain a disease free and consistently healthy flock throughout the laying period. A lot goes into this goal to make it a reality. Piggery is also very profitable. A female pig can produce piglets twice a year and in each pregnancy cycle can deliver 6-12 piglets. If you have 10 female pigs on your farm and they are healthy,by the end of 12-18 months, you are in money Whichever you wish to start, the choice is yours. However, they are risky. Dont just look at the profitability. Don't jump into any without thorough training and guidance. Get details from www.johnayodele. |
Money don go. Just forget the loss and carry on. I lost 146000 units in afribank and 20000 units in PHB(Total loss N4million) However, it is not the end of the road, only a bend in the road. Life goes on. Life is a risk. investment too is a risk. Appreciate the fact that you are alive today. Only a living soul that can forge ahead. Money don go. Do not blame the CBN Governor Sanusi, rather blame the MD's and Directors who mismanaged the Banks. Sanusi came to save and to reform the banking system. We shareholders lost because we had the voting powers to vote out bad managers of our investment and we failed to exercise our rights Now the question is this ''How many investors can interpret those audited reports of the banks and companies? This is Ignorance & Accounting illiteracy on the part of many investors who are to blame themselves for this laxity When the audited accounts of the banks and companies get to your post office box long after the Annual General Meeting of the Bank has been conducted and concluded, what can an investor do even if he can interpret the audited accounts. Blame the postal system for this lapse or who else can we blame for this? When the head office of a bank is in Lagos and the Annual General Meeting is taken to Port Harcourt or Kano, how many investors can get there to exercise their voting rights to protect their investment? Blame the Bank Directors. Blame the capital market operators and managers who manipulated the share prices in the capital market. Lastly, blame yourself and me for investing our money in expectation of future returns on investment. But Sanusi acted too hastily in the sale of Afribank ahead of the Sept 30 deadline which caught many investors unawares. |
