President Muhammadu Buhari has debunked rumours that he and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), are at loggerheads with the National leader of the Party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari said such rumours were unfounded and mischievous. He insisted that he was in constant communication with Tinubu before, during and after the Ondo governorship election last weekend. Buhari hailed Tinubu as a priceless political asset to the party and said the presidency and APC leadership was not working to destroy the former Governor of Lagos state The statement read: “President Buhari commended Tinubu’s spirit of comradeship in promptly congratulating Rotimi Akeredolu who was elected Governor. “The President also noted that at a time his administration is preoccupied with governance issues, rumours of divisions and alleged scheming within the party are counterproductive to internal unity and cohesion in APC.” He also appealed to APC members and supporters to ignore rumours that could harm the ruling party’s unity.

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – Four
journalists from a Danish gossip
magazine were sentenced to up to 15
months in prison on Thursday for
paying for credit card data to help track
politicians, celebrities and members of
the royal family.
An employee of the credit card company
Nets got 18 months for selling
information between 2008 and 2012 that
revealed the whereabouts of prominent
people such as Prime Minister Lars
Lokke Rasmussen and Hannibal-actor
Mads Mikkelsen.
The leaks enabled the weekly magazine
Se & Hor to follow Prince Joachim and
his wife on what was meant to be a
secret honeymoon to Canada in 2008,
after it bought data about the couple’s
plane tickets from the Nets system
operator.
The media group that owns the
magazine was fined 10 million Danish
crowns ($1.52 million) last August for
the covert monitoring of more than 120
celebrities. Two of its former managers
were given suspended six-month
sentences.
“
This case has drawn a clear line in the
sand, leaving no doubt that stealing and
selling confidential information is
criminal offense,” Nets spokesman
Karsten Anker Petersen said.
One of the monitored celebrities, Rene
Dif of the Danish-Norwegian music
group Aqua, was unhappy with the
trial’s results for the journalists.
“These short sentences shows how
ridiculous the Danish justice system is,”
he told TV2 local television.
“There is no reason for people to be
allowed to snoop around like this,” said
Dif, whose group topped the charts
worldwide with its hit “Barbie Girl” in
1997.
The four journalists said they would
consider appealing the verdict. |
A ccording to recent reports, an intruder
broke into a home in Monroe,
Washington and began stabbing a 75-
year-old man. Fortunately, his 80-year-
old wife was home and took matters
into her own hands.
The woman reportedly grabbed her gun,
walked into the room, and shot the man
who was stabbing her husband. The
25-year-old criminal died at the scene.
After the woman shot the intruder, she
called 911. Her husband was taken to
nearby Harborview Medical Center,
where he is now in stable condition.
Authorities discovered the intruder had
a long criminal history.
It is fortunate that the woman had a
firearm in her home and had been
trained to use it. If she had waited for
police to arrive, her husband likely
would have died.
Major crimes is investigating the
incident. If this woman is charged with
any crime for protecting her home and
family, it will be an outrage to those who
understand the vital importance of our
Second Amendment rights. |

Facebook Inc, facing withering criticism for failing to stem a flood of phony news articles in the run-up to the U.S. presidential election, is taking a series of steps to weed out hoaxes and other types of false information, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post Friday evening. Facebook has long insisted that it is a technology company and not a publisher, and rejects the idea that it should be held responsible for the content that its users circulate on the platform. Just after the election, Zuckerberg said the notion that fake or misleading news on Facebook had helped swing the election to Donald Trump was a "crazy idea." Zuckerberg then said last Saturday that more than 99 percent of what people see on Facebook is authentic, calling "only a very small amount" fake news and hoaxes. But in his Friday posting Zuckerberg struck a decidedly different tone. He said Facebook has been working on the issue of misinformation for a long time, calling the problem complex both technically and philosophically. . "While the percentage of misinformation is relatively small, we have much more work ahead on our roadmap," Zuckerberg said. He outlined a series of steps that were already underway, including greater use of automation to "detect what people will flag as false before they do it themselves." He also said Facebook would make it easier to report false content, work with third-party verification organizations and journalists on fact-checking efforts, and explore posting warning labels on content that has been flagged as false. The company will also try to prevent fake-news providers from making money through its advertising system, as it had previously announced. Zuckerberg said Facebook must be careful not to discourage sharing of opinions or mistakenly restricting accurate content. "We do not want to be arbiters of truth ourselves, but instead rely on our community and trusted third parties," he said. Facebook historically has relied on users to report links as false and share links to myth-busting sites, including Snopes, to determine if it can confidently classify stories as misinformation, Zuckerberg said. The service has extensive "community standards" on what kinds of content are acceptable. Facebook faced international outcry earlier this year after it removed an iconic Vietnam War photo due to nudity, a decision that was later reversed. The thorniest content issues are decided by a group of top executives at Facebook, and there have been extensive internal conversations at the company in recent months over content controversies, people familiar with the discussions say. Among the fake news reports that circulated ahead of the U.S. election were reports erroneously alleging Pope Francis had endorsed Trump and that a federal agent who had been investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton was found dead. President Obama said he doesn't expect
major changes in Latin American policy
under the Trump administration, and
urged people to "not make immediate
judgments" until the president-elect
puts his team together.
"Don't just assume the worst. Wait until
the new administration is in place, is
putting its policies forward, and then
you can make your own judgments,"
Obama told a group of 1,000 young
leaders from around the Americas in
Peru on Saturday.
"There are going to be tensions that
arise, probably more about trade more
than anything else," he said. But even
there, Obama said he's not convinced
Donald Trump would tear up trade
deals, as the president-elect promised
on the campaign trail. "Once they look
at how it's working, I think they’ll
conclude that it’s working both for the
United States and its trading partners."
Obama's comments Saturday, during
his final stop on what's scheduled to be
the last foreign trip of his presidency,
followed a pattern of trying to give
Trump space to adopt what Obama
hopes are more conventional policies.
In Europe this week, Obama reassured
allies Trump would maintain the U.S.
commitment to NATO, and he'll likely
have a similar message for Pacific Rim
leaders at the Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation summit in Peru on Sunday.

"How you campaign is not always the
same as how you govern," Obama said.
"When you’re campaigning, you're
trying to stir up passions. When you
govern, you have reality in front of you,
and you have to figure out how to make
this work."
On trade, for example, Obama said the
2009 Peru Trade Promotion Agreement
has benefited the United States by
ensuring that workers aren't undercut
by abusive labor practices in Peru, but
also allowing Peruvian workers to be
customers for U.S. products.
"We did it also because that will help lift
the wages and benefits and protections
that workers here in Peru have," he
said. "Then they have more money in
their pockets, then they go out an spend
that money, which is good for business
and everybody is better off."
Obama also met Saturday with the 11
other leaders from countries in the
Trans-Pacific Partnership, the trade
agreement in limbo now that its largest
signatory, the United States, appears
unlikely to ratify. But the White House
said Obama used the meeting to urge
the other countries to press forward on
"high-standard trade agreements." |
Pastor Lucy Okoh is the wife of Pastor
Antoni Okoh, General Overseer of
Sovereign Word Church, which has its
branches in Lagos and Abuja, South
Africa and USA. The church came into
limelight in the mid-90s through its
special crusade titled: ‘It’s Your Day of
Recovery,’ where many healing and
miracles were recorded. In this
interview with ESTHER BAKARE, she
bares her mind on factors affecting
marriage, the ministry and how to keep
the church growing
When did the church start?
It started over 20 years ago here in
Lagos.
How did you meet your husband?
I used to know him then as his school’s
fellowship leader. My own secondary
school fellowship was called YWCA at
St. Margarethen College, Benin. One
day, his own fellowship was having a
programme at Immaculate Conception
College and we were invited. The
programme had to do with a camp
meeting and I needed to get permission
from my parents in order for me to
attend.
I looked-for someone to help me talk to
them to allow me go and because he
was a calm and understanding person, I
approached him to help me out. It was
at that point we became friends and we
started talking.
What was the attraction between the
two of you?
Well, I would say his calmness and for
the fact that he has listening ears and
quite an understanding gentleman.
Did you have any premonition that the
relationship would lead to marriage?
When we were friends, I think we were
going to be a couple because we were
attracted to each other. The friendship
grew into love but not love at first sight.
Although I was in secondary school
then and he had completed his own
secondary school, but he was still
holding fellowship in schools around.
We, however, became close friends and
the feelings later developed. I actually
wanted someone who had listening ears
and that gave me the confidence to go
to him initially.
Did you foresee him becoming a pastor
in later years ?
No, because he went into business and
had a registered company where he did
some jobs with Delta Steel Company
but even at that, he was fully involved in
the ministry. He had a break for a while
before going into full time ministry.
What happened was that he knew the
calling was there but was ignoring it
until later.
How did the ministry eventually start?
We got married after I graduated from
the University of Benin where I read
Sociology and Social Works and moved
to Lagos. The ministry actually started
in our apartment with two of his friends
who were in the same fellowship with
him back then in Benin but had
relocated to Lagos before us.
How challenging was it at the
beginning?
It wasn’t really interesting at the
beginning, especially when he told me
he was quitting business for full time
ministry; it wasn’t something I was
prepared for be cause I was contented
with him being a business man. It had
been my dream to marry a business
man because I believe businessmen are
easy going people; they don’t stress
their wives so much and they will be
easier to cope with. When he told me he
was quitting business I didn’t like it
initially. However, because I loved him, I
was willing to go along with him. It
wasn’t really a problem for me agreeing
with him on the issue of full time
ministry because of the love I had for
him.
Were there any financial challenges at
the beginning?
Of course there were, especially in the
area of paying rent for the hall we used
for service. But my husband was very
pushful. At a time, he had to sell his
only car to fund the ministry. What
helped us out was that before then, God
led us to our spiritual father and mother
in persons of Pastor Taiwo and the Late
Pastor Bimbo Odukoya who played a
great role in our ministry in terms of
encouragement; they were quite
supportive to the ministry.
What is the main thrust of Sovereign
Word Church?
The main thrust is healing and
deliverance as well as prophetic
utterances from the mouth of God’s
servant.
What major event launched the ministry
out?
It was a crusade we had in the 90s
where a lot of healings were performed
at the National Stadium, Surulere; it was
one of the major events that God used
to launch us into the healing ministry.
For instance, there was a case of a
woman with issue of blood, by the time
she came for the programme, we had
already closed.
Apparently, she thought it was a night
vigil so she came in the night and
decided to sleep at the altar where she
knelt down and prayed and the following
morning, her flow stopped and she
came to share the testimony.
That was the crusade that gave birth to
our popular healing programme ‘It’s
Your Day of Recovery”.
But the recent one making waves is the
issue of a man with kidney problem
whose kidney had already packed up,
Daddy located him through the word of
prophecy and prayed for him and he
kept coming to church and after some
weeks, he went back to the hospital for
medical check-up and doctors asked
him what kind of drugs he used that had
restored his kidney to normal.
You said you’ve been married to Pastor
Anthony Okoh for about 25 years. What
has kept your marriage going all these
years?
From the beginning, I knew him as a
businessman, but I wasn’t after his
money or business. I loved him for who
he is irrespective of what was
happening around him then. My love for
God and willingness to obey His word
because God commanded wives to
submit to their husbands and I have
consistently submitted to him and
willing to go along with him. I also
believed the grace of God has worked
for us.
On his own side, he’s a loving husband
who obeys the word of God that says,
‘Husbands love your wives.’ He is also
a responsible man and a responsible
father who has the fear of God in him
and these have kept us going. We know
when to say no or Yes to something and
we also hold unto God’s word.
What is your advice to couples on how
to keep their marriage ?
Every couple should be able to resist the
devil because when you give him a foot
he takes 10, when you give him a step,
he takes a mile.
What do you think affect marriages
these days?
Many of the things that couples believed
at the beginning of their relationship,
they begin to allow them to fizzle out
because of the challenges of life that
they are facing. The devil will always
test everyone’s faith because he
tempted our Lord Jesus Christ also and
he could tempt anybody but when those
temptations come, some couples allow
the word of God to fizzle away and are
overcome by the temptation, instead
they must at every point in time allow
the word of God to guide them.
What about cases of wives of General
Overseers staying abroad while their
husband’s ministry is based here in
Nigeria all in the name of expansion?
I don’t support wives staying apart from
their husbands irrespective of their
husband’s anointing, it could give room
to temptation. Even the Bible does not
encourage that. 2Corinthians 7:5
emphasised that couples should not
stay apart from each other that if there
need for that due to fasting, then it
should be for a while and after mutual
consent.
By the time the wife is staying abroad
and temptation comes as a result of
weakness of the flesh, how does the
husband cope? The Bible also says we
should resist the devil.
To me it’s not achievable but that does
not mean it’s not possible depending on
the couple but wisdom demands that
they should avoid such a temptation.
To avoid temptation, it is better you
have your spouse with you and if you
have to stay away, then it should be for
a while and with agreement on how
both of you will be communicating
effectively with each other so that you
don’t give room to loneliness.
How do you feel losing members ?
No one feels good about it. Members
are like one’s spiritual children, so when
you lose any member, of course, you
feel bad. Sometimes, the devil is after
them and will want to drive them away
from their place of blessing to distract
them from where they will find solution
to their problems.
Due to impatience, dissatisfaction or
one thing or the other, they leave. The
church is God’s work, the Bible says ‘I
will build my church and the gate of hell
will not prevail against it and once you
believe it’s God’s work, leave it for
Him’.
He will do His work there should be no
gimmicks about it, He knows how to
bring members. Some of them leave for
one reason or the other but God’s work
continues.
What about prosperity messages that
pastors are preaching at the expense of
salvation?
Prosperity is of God. The Bible says the
love of money is the root of evil and not
money itself. Money is especially
needed to preach the gospel, prosperity
is part of you living your life abundantly.
There is nothing wrong in preaching
prosperity. If the Kingdom of God must
expand we need prosperity, the people
of God must be blessed to spread the
kingdom. |
