HumphreyGspot:FOOD SAFETY AND HYGIENE: ROLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICERS IN DISEASE PREVENTION Our attention has been drawn to a short video going round the social media as circulated by some blogs. We find it interesting to note that the proponents of the video are doing so based on their limited knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the Environmental Health Officers (Sanitary Inspectors) known in the Yoruba land as Wolewole. Let me begin by enlightening you on who an EHO is according to Act 11, 2002 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. An EHO is someone who has been trained and certified in a recognised institution and registered by the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON). Environmental health itself is the control of factors in man's physical environment which exercise, or may exercise, directly or indirectly a deleterious effect on man's physical well-being, health and survival. The sole aim of the EHO is to ensure disease prevention and control whether from living premises, food, water or the environment as a whole. Our Officers in the video were simply doing their constitutional assigned duties when touts and thugs attacked them. If the role of the press is to protect the citizens and pass adequate information, then the bloggers who are peddling this video have failed in their responsibility. You must know that Food safety and hygiene is a CORE aspect of the EHOs job. If these social media jobbers do their jobs well, they should be able to tell Nigerians the number of food poisoning cases been recorded daily in our health centres across the Nation. But for likes and comments, only false and half baked information are peddled. According to the Public Health Laws of Ogun State 2006 and the National Environmental Sanitation Regulations 2016, anyone who wants to HANDLE food MUST undergo a medical examination and be trained before doing so. The culprit in the video did neither of the two. This is a crime! Environmental Sanitation offences all over the world is criminal which offenders can be jailed for. It is a crime because Environmental issues especially food can lead to the death of many people at a time. Many of these vendors and hawkers prepare their food in unhygienic conditions and many of them also suffer from communicable diseases which they may be healthy carriers of. The Ogun State House of Assembly in 2018 mandated the Sanitation Departments of the 20 Local governments and 37 LCDAs to carry out compulsory training for all food and drinks handlers in the state. This was as result of the alarming high rate of food borne diseases being recorded. As at this moment, over 5,000 vendors/handlers have been trained in about 25 LGs/LCDAs. Yet, many of them run away from medical examinations and trainings due to ignorance. One would have expected that journalism should be about informing the public rightly and not just about making money or gaining 'likes'. One would have expected that even if any uninformed tout or thug (as heard from the background voices in the video) sends video, a responsible media channel will investigate and not just churn such to the world. Such crude interview that was cut off when the offender talking about trying to offer N2,000 shows desperation for inordinate fame and crass irresponsibility. The offender and his boss was trying to induce the Officers with bribe which they blatantly turned down. That was said by the offender himself. Where the issue of bribe comes in beats the imagination. As specified by law, the EHO has responsibilities spanning beyond routine inspection of houses (Wolewole), management of wastes and even inspection of food and food premises. There are about 22 core responsibilities, some of which would blow your mind. Finally, and for the records, our officers do NOT go out to harass public but to protect them. In the course of doing this, several means are employed just to see that the right thing is done. Anyone can go into any business, but as regards the food business, you must be ready to obey the law and subject yourself to medical examination because lives are at stake. For a population of about 5 million in Ogun state, there are less than 300 who are expected to perform magic without appropriate tools to work with. This few should be encouraged and not harangued, supported and not villified. And for the sake of posterity this video must be pulled down. About 60% of the solid wastes generated in Nigeria are plastics. Note: statistics is my opinion different methods are adopted by users to dispose or destroy them, ranging from burning to disposing off on the street among many other methods. Burning of plastics generates air pollutants which has carcinogenic properties. in Nigeria, even locust beans that used to be packed in leaves are now packed with plastic. everyone wants to be honoured with a plastic bag even after buying a sachet of water possessing double plastic. then how are we coming out of this? As we celebrate world environment day today, REMEMBER NYLON IS NOT AN HONOUR BUT A DISHONOUR TO OUR ENVIRONMENT NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. |
Pls chat me on 08068328110. I am interested in those books |
Quasarr:I have replied your PM since when you sent it |
Quasarr:No problem |
kenlolly75:Thanks ma. She is doing great |
Hello house. God bless everyone here. PH: A pair of 4" black (pick toe) shoe. Size 38. Location is Ilorin. |
This is serious.

Funjosh:Eshe sir. Aseyi sa'modun |
Aminat508:Thanks ma'am Aminat |
KangaIye:Hmmmm. I have been worried too. |
Nice... |
africanusvu:Sir, we accept you leave close to them. You might not have anything to say to the OP, but you sure have something to say to us. Why cant you find a way to proof the innocence of the parents, even if you intentionally blinded yourself to the injury on that girl, lets hear the mother side of the story, take a picture with the girl and parents. We do not need the tears from the mother, because what we see on Sarah are not tears but fear and despair. So please stop all these your rantings and proof the OP wrong. I have a 3yr old baby, and i have been trying to imagine such injured on her face and the fear in her eyes. Bros, i cannot stand it. |
NonsoDguru:Bro, God bless you. I pray we get the help we need soon. How is the girl today? I also suggested in the other thread to get attention of soldiers if you have an army barracks close to you. I know they will be willing to teach the parents how to identify a witch. And as for you Mr africanusvu, if you really care about your "community" as claimed by you, you should know that Sarah is one of those to promote the community and you will know how to get the truth. But no, you are here with some poor threats. Abeg sir, pack well. Nothing will happen, and i know you know the truth. Lets wait and see to the end of this matter. I have been trying to imagine a 3yr old girl in this mess. Its better imagined... God bless Nigeria and all that are ready to save Sarah from evil. |
Ma'am Aminat, so it us another Year again!!! Happy birthday to you darling sister. Its a Year of greater achievements for you, a Year better than d former. God bless your new age. Light says Happy Birthday mummy Aminat. Thanks for your love. |
I taught i posted a comment here yesterday night when i saw this, i could not help the tears. OP, i think as a corp member you can help by reporting to the state women affairs commission, the police, even if you have army barracks around there you can also contact them i know they will teach the parents how a witch is been taken care of. Pls just do something ASAP. I am trying to imagine a toddler understanding how to hide out of fear. God be with Sarah. |
Donald3d:Olojimoh come and answer your query o. But i think nothing has been coming in. Its well. Welcome back anyways |
God... I cannot hold the tears when i saw the pictures. I think you as a corp member can do something about it. Why not inform the state women affairs commission. Pls do something fast before the fear turns to something else. I am trying to imagine a toddler understanding how to hide out of fear. It shall not be well with the parents if they do not change their ways. Pls anyone residing on that state can also help. I will pray for sarah tonight. |
God bless their union. More years of celebrations to come. |
Emioga:Hmmmm. There is always Light at the end of every dark tunnel. No matter how long or big it might be and sometimes the tunnels are dirty with lots of heavy cobwebs. But l am sure at the end Light will shine. Cheers... |

nysot:Ma nysot, i was in Ilorin yesterday and i saw Tomilola myself. You said to mention you when its been confirmed. I already posted my observations in my previous post, pls check it. Thanks ma |
Hello mothers, I travelled to Ilorin yesterday for some assignments. And i gave it a thought to check on Tomilola. Been the first time in about 10 years of been to Ilorin. I met the mother at post office where she has a small shop of cosmestics. Seen Tomilola, one will not believe she is having any health challenge, but moving close to her you will suspect something is out of place. She has a very big tummy, which protrudes when she breathes in and relax a bit when she breathes out. She is very light for her age. She looks like a 4-6months old baby in stature but her face says otherwise. I learnt she is over 1year old now. She is neither crawling nor talking But she is a very pretty girl. Very adorable and cute. Her beauty helps to hide her health condition. According to the mother, she just recovered from one of her several crisis. My palasa cannot upload pix on Nairaland but the pictures i took of her has been uploaded by Someone on the thread created to solicit for funds on her behalf. Pls Click on my signature Pls mommas lets help this baby. God bless you all. |
