Four expatriates and two Nigerians working for the South Korean construction firm Hyundai Heavy Industries Limited were kidnapped Monday in southern Nigeria, police said. “Some armed men went to a Korean company, Hyundai, located in a forest by the Atlantic Ocean beach, and kidnapped four expatriates and two Nigerians,” police spokesman Fidelis Odunna told AFP. A fisherman, Tare Kolugha, said he witnessed the abductions as the workers were travelling to their workplace in southern Bayelsa state. “We were on the waters fishing close to Odioma Creek when we noticed two … boats with armed men (who) shot into the air and stopped the passenger boat conveying the Hyundai workers to their yard,” Kolugha told AFP. Gangs have frequently abducted expatriates working in the oil- producing Niger Delta in ransom kidnappings, but Nigerians from wealthy families have increasingly become their targets in recent years. A 2009 amnesty deal in the Niger Delta led to a sharp drop in unrest in the region, but criminality remains widespread. Late last month, two foreigners who were identified by the local media as Lebanese were kidnapped at a work site in the region. And the 83-year-old mother of the Nigerian finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was kidnapped from her home in Delta state and held captive for five days before being freed on Friday. www.vanguardngr.com/2012/12/six-hyundai-heavy-workers-kidnapped-in-bayelsa/ |

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend early this morning, then drove to the team facility and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager, this according to the Kansas City Police Department. Police Capt. David Lindaman says that Belcher and his girlfriend -- who had just given birth to the couple's child three months earlier -- began arguing around 7:00 AM local time. Lindaman says Belcher shot the woman multiple times and she was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police says the girlfriend's mother witnessed the shooting. Police say Belcher left the scene and drove to the stadium where he was confronted by team personnel, including GM Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel. According to police, they tried to keep Belcher from committing additional acts of violence. Just as police arrived on the scene, they heard a gunshot and discovered Belcher had shot himself in the head. Cops say before firing the shot, Belcher thanked Pioli and Crennel for all they had done for him.The coaches told police they never felt as if they were in danger. Belcher had been with the Chiefs for four seasons after being undrafted out of the University of Maine. The Chiefs are scheduled to host the Carolina Panthers tomorrow. So far, the NFL has said that game will be played as scheduled.Kansas City Chiefs Chairman & CEO Clark Hunt released a statement saying, "The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted."

What would you call this? Love for their pet or stupidity? A California couple and their 16-year-old son were swept out to sea over the weekend after a deadly chain of events set off when the teenager jumped into frigid waters to save the family dog from turbulent Pacific Ocean waves. Although the dog escaped on its own from the water off the Northern California coast, Howard Kuljian, 50, and Mary Scott, 54, of Eureka died while their 16-year-old son, Gregory Kuljian, remained lost at sea, said Deputy Ariel Gruenthal of the Humboldt County Coroner’s office. “The dog was able to get out somehow,” said Dana Jones, a state parks and recreation district superintendent. “It’s very sad, and we just always have to be aware when we’re around the ocean that nature is sometimes out of control.” According to Jones, the tragedy began on Saturday afternoon while the family, including an 18-year-old daughter who was unharmed, was walking with Gregory’s girlfriend along a steep beach at Big Lagoon, about 270 miles north of San Francisco. Howard Kuljian threw the dog a stick, she said, and a wave, possibly as high as 10 feet, pulled the animal into the water. The son went in first to try to rescue his dog, Jones said. “Then the father went in to save the son. The mother was swept in at that point,” she said. “The waves are big and powerful, and that’s a very steep beach. The waves pound the beach. When the waves are pounding like that, you don’t have a chance to breathe.” A bystander summoned help while Olivia Kuljian, 18, and Gregory’s girlfriend, Lily Loncar, 16, watched in horror, Gruenthal said. Rescuers found the bodies of Howard Kuljian and Scott close to the shore, Jones said. The U.S. Coast Guard searched by air and sea for Gregory, but fog, darkness and the impossibility of survival prompted them to quit on Saturday evening, said Lieutenant Bernie Carrigan of the Coast Guard. He estimated the water temperature at between 55 and 57 degrees, so cold that hypothermia would rapidly set in, though a dog’s coat would protect against it. “It’s kind of a reminder to never turn your back on the ocean,” Carrigan said. “It’s neat to see that kind of power. It’s also dangerous.” [Reuters] http://news.yahoo.com/three-california-family-drown-ocean-trying-save-dog-222921018.html |

A 45-year-old Dutch woman has been jailed for four years for organising nine sham marriages, involving Nigerians living in the United Kingdom.Diana Olivieira flew the brides overfrom Holland to the North West for the ceremonies. They all married Nigerians so that they and their partners could take up residency in the UK. She was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court after pleading guilty to conspiracy to facilitate non EU persons into the UK. Olivieira was arrested at her home address in Rotterdam and brought to the UK on 25 July. Investigations by the UK Border Agency found she travelled from Holland to the UK several times with her clients. Flights were arranged for Dutch nationals to visit the UK for short periods. As people from the Netherlands are entitled to live and work in the UK, while here their spouses applied for documents and National Insurance numbers. After they married, the Nigerians applied for European Economic Area (EEA) residency status as spouses of EEA nationals. Dave Magrath, from the UK Border Agency, said: "The sentence handed to Olivieira sends out a clear message that we will not tolerate abuse of our immigration system." Six of the grooms and some of their partners have been prosecuted and received jail sentences totalling 17 years.

The recent media report that Nigeria is now holding the enviable record of a country with the highest private jet ownership in Africa is unarguably rankling. This untoward development has brought into sharper focus the paradox of a nation that is endowed with huge oil resources but where only a few privileged individuals are wealthy. In a country where the average citizen or over 70 percent of the population lives on less than $1 per day, it is astonishing that there is a super rich class of business moguls, bankers, preachers, politicians and oil magnates whose private ownership of jets is more than that of any other country in the continent. The report has it that ownership of state-of-the-art jets in Nigeria has increased to over 200 in 2012 from 50 in 2008. It also indicates that N1.30 trillion may have been spent by Nigerians in the last seven years to acquire jets. The cost of a jet ranges between N2.4 billion and N9 billion. Though successive Nigerian administrations have generously dubbed the country as the “Giant of Africa,” the reality on ground indicates that Nigeria does not deserve to be so called. Ours is a system riddled with systemic corruption and officially- sanctioned profligacy. Over the years, we have not fared better in any index of development by any African and global ranking bodies. While it is the prerogative of individuals to decide what to do with their money, we think that the rush by wealthy Nigerians to acquire private jets is fast becoming an obsession that should be curbed. The new craze among public office holders is unnecessary show of power, prestige and personal ego. Acquiring a private jet has now become a status symbol for a few privileged nouveau riche Nigerians including members of the political elite. Given that some oil-rich states of the Niger Delta region can afford the luxury of a private jet for their chief executives, the same can hardly be said of other states of the federation where basic necessities of life are still a campaign issue. Even among the oil-rich states, some environmental challenges occasioned by years of oil exploration and exploitation are still begging for attention that acquisition of jets cannot be a top priority. The recent havoc caused by flood in many parts of the country shows the enormity of environmental problems facing most of the states. Besides, every state in the country is bedevilled by the blight of unemployment and poverty. The country is still battling with general insecurity occasioned by armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism and other social ills. Moreover, the nation’s education and health sectors are in a shamble, yet we parade the highest number of jet owners in Africa. We decry the new craze to acquire jets among Nigerians, especially the public office holders. In fact, public office holders should seriously face governance and other developmental issues and do away with the tendency to buy jets. Apart from being an avoidable drain on the state’s resources, there is no need and justification for such ego- tripping. This overt and stupendous consumerism culture epitomizes poverty of ideas and misplacement of priorities. It should be stopped forthwith. While there is nothing basically wrong with private individuals owning jets, we should not bring the Nigerian factor to bear on it so that it does not become nauseating. We urge Nigerians to moderate their taste for ostentation and curb the new craze. We appeal to state governors to channel those resources to the enhancement of democracy deliverables to the people. Let them compete on developmental issues and not on jets. Above all, government should regulate the acquisition of luxury goods including jets by increasing taxation on them. Efforts should be geared towards improving the nation’s aviation industry. |
