Google has finally launched the web interface to their promised new service for Android users called Android Device Manager. The Android Device Manager works exactly like Apple’s Find My iPhone, Samsung’s Find My Mobile & HTC’s HTCSense.com and what this newly launched service does is that - it helps you track down your lost or stolen Android Phone or Tablet. I've been so busy this evening testing, trying and having fun with this new service from Google, it is so cool and it will surely be useful someday for every Android users even if you are using the lowest-priced Android phone. If you also want to use this service you will have to visit Android Device Manager - https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager . Then, Select your device from the list of recent devices you used with your account and the website will try to locate your device. Once your device is located, it will show up on the map with the current address on the side. Now, you can remotely make the phone ring, imagine you lost your phone in the house maybe in between the couch or in your wardrobe, the RING feature will surely help locate the phone because the phone will ring at full volume for five minutes until you press the power button on your phone. After trying so hard, If you still can’t locate your phone (assuming you lost it) and you are afraid someone will access the important & highly confidential documents on it, you can remotely erase the data on it. Although, you surely need to pre-authorize this option on your device in advance from the Google Settings App on your Phone so make sure you do it NOW (I've done mine not quite long ago) because without it being enabled, your device can’t be erased remotely. Compared to Apple’s Find My iPhone Service, Google’s ADM service lacks one useful feature which is - The ability to remotely lock your device and display a custom message along with a phone number that someone can call in case they’ve found your device and are willing to return it. This can come in handy and is a better option than just remotely erasing your device, which can be a bit too extreme at times. Hopefully, I think Google will still add this option to Android Device Manager as soon as possible. Note that the Android Device Manager (ADM) service is available only for devices running Android 2.2 Froyo and ABOVE. Also, Devices running Android 4.1 and higher must enable location access by going to Google Settings > Location > Access location. What do you think about Android Device Manager ? Have you tried it out ? and Will it be really useful at all ? Drop your Comments. Google ! Google !! Google !!! The name always ring in my mind whenever i hear it, not only me. Many internet users today also feel the same way at times even if not every time, believe me - if we say Microsoft is the father of Computer then Google is the father of the Internet too. +Google has changed the way the internet used to be in a very positive way. But, there is a lot more to know about Google than just the name 'Google' itself. What do i have to know, you are wondering ? Well, sit down and relax as we go through the full details of what Google is all about. Google Inc. is an American multinational corporation specializing in Internet-related services and products. These Internet-related services and products include search, cloud computing, software, online advertising and outstanding technologies. Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. Larry and Sergey own about 16 percent of Google's share so they incorporated Google as a private company on September 4, 1998. Later on, Google stated its mission in a gathering, saying their aim is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". In 2006, Google moved to their headquarters in Mountain View, California, nicknamed the Googleplex. Presently, Google offers online productivity tools which includes email (Gmail), an office suite (Google Docs), and social networking (Google+). Their Desktop Applications include web browser, photo editor, organizer and Instant Messaging App. Google is also leading the development of the Android mobile operating system and the browser-only Google Chrome OS for a specialized type of PC known as Chromebook. Google has moved increasingly into communications hardware: partnering with major electronics manufacturers e.g. ASUS, in production of its high-end Nexus Tablets and Smartphones. In total, Google has been estimated to run more than one million servers in data centers around the world and to process over one billion search requests and about twenty-four Petabytes of user-generated data each day. In December 2012, Alexa listed www.google.com as the most visited website in the world. Numerous Google sites in other languages figure in the top one hundred, and several other Google-owned sites such as YouTube and Blogger. Google started with Larry Page and Sergey Brin, but now it already has thousands of workers worldwide. What more success story can be greater than Google's ? What do you think about Google ? Would you like to also contribute to the hard work of Google which is stylishly changing the technological advancement of this century ? Lets hear from you ! At the BlackBerry Annual Live Conference 2013, BlackBerry CEO officially announced that the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) will be rolled out to Android and iOS users. Now, this dream is almost coming true as BlackBerry releases the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) in its beta testing stage. The Android and iOS version of this widely-known instant messenger is now available to some developers and beta users in order to test the app on their Android and iOS devices before it gets rolled out to everyone. In short, the BBM Beta testing is not available for everyone, but if you have received an email like the one shown in the picture below then you should know that you just got an invitation to test the App directly from the BlackBerry team. The beta version of this App currently requires Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and above OS, while the iOS version runs on iOS 6 and higher. If you are still running a lower version of Android on your Phone then its better you go and upgrade it and get ready for the arrival of BBM for Android. Have you been invited to the BBM beta programme ? As an Android or iOS user, How will you feel if BBM gets to your own device too ? What do you think ? Say your mind, Nairalanders !!! Android Rooting is the process whereby Android Smartphones & Tablets Users are allowed to attain privileged control over their device which is known as ‘Root Access’. Rooting an Android device involves adding a small Linux application called ‘Super User’ which is mainly abbreviated as ‘SU’ and also, this ‘Super User’ allows applications and commands to run with elevated permissions. The main reason why most Android Users are willing to root their device is because of the fact that ‘they will become the boss over their device not their device becoming the boss over them just like before’. They will have the ability to do many things on their rooted device which cannot be done on unrooted devices; things like tethering on a lower Android version (e.g. Cupcake, Froyo) with a PC or a Nokia Lumia 1020 for instance, clearing the cache on core Apps, moving core Apps to SD Card and so on. (Rooting on Android is quite similar to Jail breaking on iPhone). Now, let’s consider & compare the main advantages and disadvantages of rooting Android devices. Advantages Ability to install New Apps – Some new Applications are strictly available only for rooted Android devices and this type of Apps are always the bomb. For example, An App called ‘SetCPU’ helps control the total CPU usage on your device thereby increasing your phone battery life, another App called ‘DroidVPN’ protects your important information like Credit Card Number, Phone number & SSN from hackers while browsing on your Android Smartphone or Tablet and it will also let your blocked MTN BIS & other BIS work on your Android device. Ability to install & edit Core Apps – Sometimes, you may not like the virtual keyboard on your Android device and feel like changing it but you will later discover that you can’t install a new virtual keyboard but if you have a rooted device, you can change the keyboard by installing virtual keyboards like Swype, Swift Key, Google Keyboard etc. (although, some newer version of Android OS now allow you to do this without root access). Ability to install custom ROMs– At times, you may be using a smartphone and get bored with it maybe because you’ve been using it for long & you are seeing the same thing on it all day. Now you won’t get bored anymore, rooting your android phone and installing new custom ROMs like CynamogenMod or MIUI will completely change the interface of your phone. Fast Performance, Designed for Speed – Most Android Smartphones are fast but rooting an Android phone can even make it faster and don’t forget that no matter how fast a Smartphone is – it can never be TOO fast. Some custom ROMs are specifically designed for speed which results in faster operation between Apps, faster execution of processes, faster internet-browsing speed and so on. Full control over your device – Be it a tablet or smartphone, rooting your device gives you full control over your device. You can decide to install new themes, edit core apps, set CPU usage, move Apps to SD, remove all unwanted pre-installed Apps, execute commands and perform some advanced tasks you can never do with any unrooted Android device. Ability to Install Apps to SD Card – Moving installed Apps from Phone memory to SD Card is completely different from installing an Application directly to your SD card. With the help of root access and some custom ROMs, you can now install Apps directly to your SD Card since most Android Phones have limited amount of phone memory, especially older Android versions & phones. NOTE: This post is not complete, to read the full detailed post about Android Rooting; Advantages and Disadvantages ... Since the first day Microsoft released the Windows 8 Operating System, I didn't like it up till a month ago when i started using it on My Tablet (although my Tablet is Specifically running Windows RT) and now I'm getting used to it. Just like in my own case, Millions of Computer users worldwide these days are also falling in love with the newest Desktop OS from Microsoft - 'Windows 8'. You are wondering - How could that be ? Well, Windows 8 has now been announced as the third most used Desktop Operating System in the world after the most used desktop OS - Windows 7 and Windows XP. Windows 8 was released in the month of October 2012; exactly 8 months ago, and it has finally surpassed Windows Vista in usage because back then, Windows Vista was the most preferred OS after Windows 7 and Windows XP. You can see a well labelled data analysis of the most used Desktop OS in the world in the picture below and as you can see, it is mainly dominated by the big Microsoft. The data in the picture above comes from research company and market tracker Net Applications and it shows that Windows 8 isn’t too far behind Mac OS X (all versions combined). Windows 8 marks a decent jump in usage over May, when it had 4.27% share. At the top of the chart remain Windows 7 and Windows XP with 44.37% and 37.17%, respectively. This puts Microsoft as the undisputed champion in the desktop operating systems market. Mac OS is second with 7.2% (including older versions) and Linux is third with 1.28%. What do you think about this desktop OS analysis ? Which is your most preferred OS ? and Why ? ![]() Your comments and contributions are highly welcomed. It is very easy, simple and stress-free to use an Android Phone as a steady Internet connection for your Computer and other devices like Smartphones, Tablets etc. Thanks to the release of the Low-Price Quality Android Phones from Tecno, at a very low cost – you can buy a Tecno Android Phone or any other Android phone and use it like a Wi-Fi Router with the help of the built-in Wi-Fi Hotspot in the phone. There are many ways to connect an Android™ Phone’s data connection to a computer which includes connecting via a USB cable, via Bluetooth and via Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot but in this post, we are dealing with the via Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot method. Although, using an Android phone as a Wi-Fi Hotspot depends on the model of the Android phone and at times the Phone’s carrier. The portable Wi-Fi Hotspot feature allows you to share your Phone’s data connection with up to 8 wireless devices. Just relax and follow the detailed process below. Warning: Using your Android phone’s Wi-Fi Hotspot is data-intensive and will dramatically reduce the battery life of your phone. I hereby recommend that you keep your phone plugged in while the wireless hotspot is turned on. 1. On your Phone's Home screen, Goto Settings. 2. Open Wireless & Networks and click on Tethering & Portable hotspot. 3. Choose Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Settings and you can click on Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot to access the Wi-Fi hotspot settings. 4. When configuring the Hotspot, You can change the Network SSID which is the name that other computers or devices see when scanning for Wi-Fi networks.
