Music/Radio / Quincy Jones Lists Yoruba Music As One Of Music Genres Producers Must Listen To. by babakol(m): 8:35am On Feb 08, 2018
In Conversation: Quincy Jones

The music legend on the secret Michael Jackson, his relationship with the Trumps, and the problem with modern pop.

By David Marchese

In both music and manner, Quincy Jones has always registered — from afar, anyway — as smooth, sophisticated, and impeccably well-connected. (That’s what earning 28 Grammy awards and co-producing Michael Jackson’s biggest-selling albums will do.) But in person, the 84-year-old music-industry macher is far spikier and more complicated. “All I’ve ever done is tell the truth,”

Do you see a future for the music business?

There isn’t a music business anymore! If these people had paid attention to Shawn Fanning 20 years ago, we wouldn’t be in this mess. But the music business is still too full of these old-school bean counters. You can’t be like that. You can’t be one of these back-in-my-day people.

You’re talking about business not music, but, and I mean this respectfully, don’t some of your thoughts about music fall under the category of “back in my day”?
Musical principles exist, man. Musicians today can’t go all the way with the music because they haven’t done their homework with the left brain. Music is emotion and science. You don’t have to practice emotion because that comes naturally. Technique is different. If you can’t get your finger between three and four and seven and eight on a piano, you can’t play. You can only get so far without technique. People limit themselves musically, man. Do these musicians know tango? Macumba? Yoruba music? Samba? Bossa nova? Salsa? Cha-cha?

Bunch of unserious people. You did not strike when few nigerians in the name of NASS are gulping huge portion of the entire budget in the name of salaries and allowances. You did strike against casualisation of worker and bad working conditions in different work places. You have not stroke against corrupt officers and those who bought jeeps double the price.
You will be ashamed how people will ignore your call for strike.

You're not supposed to be so blind with patriotism that you ignore reality. We all know the common man on the street can't defend himself much, but they can make the government listen.Things are hard my brother, be realistic.
Sports / Rashidi Yekini – We Must Never Forget by babakol(m): 1:20pm On May 04, 2016
The Nigeria striker died four years ago, his legacy lives on in the history books but we must do more to preserve his memory

It was four years ago today, on May 4, 2012, that Nigeria’s greatest striker died. Rashidi Yekini was the epitome of class on the field. He scored 37 goals in 58 appearances for the Super Eagles and led Nigeria to victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations.

Yekini’s legacy also extended to the global stage where he scored Nigeria’s first ever goal at the World Cup in that 3-0 defeat of Bulgaria at USA ’94. His iconic goal celebration was listed among Goal's Top 50 most memorable World Cup celebrations of all time in 2010.

Since he died in very sad conditions four years ago, attempts have been made at preserving his legacy. A couple of streets have been named after him in Ilorin and Abuja while the Nigeria Professional Football League has named the top scorer award in the domestic season after him.
However, we can do more. Isn’t it time that the Federal Government paid homage to the memory of this great Nigerian who broke all records in service to the flag?

Since Yekini’s last game for the Super Eagles, no Nigerian striker has reached the level of grace he achieved in the country’s colours.
Many have called for one of the national stadiums to be named in his honour. It is a good call. What are we waiting for?

We claim to love the game so much but find it hard to honour the legacy of our past heroes. In Brazil, the national stadium in Brasilia, the capital, is named after a former footballer, Mane Garrincha (Manuel Francisco dos Santos).
For a man who gave his youth to his country and was the first Nigerian to be named African Footballer of the Year in 1993, Yekini deserves commensurate honour from his country.

As a young boy growing up in the ‘90s, this writer remembers Yekini for making football easy to watch. When Yekini was on the pitch, one was sure that the Super Eagles were capable of winning matches, home and away. He thrived in both the small and big matches and always made his impact felt with opposing defenders and goalkeepers.

Nigeria’s run to the Afcon title in 1994 was carried on his huge shoulders as he scored in key moments to lead the Eagles to the final where Emmanuel Amuneke then scored the brace that ensured the trophy was won.

This writer proposes that a befitting sporting monument be named after Rashidi Yekini as a way of preserving his memory and keeping his legacy alive in the hearts of the future generations of this great country.
We must never forget Rashidi Yekini.

Celebrities / The Curse Is Broken!!! Leonardo Dicaprio Wins Best Actor by babakol(m): 8:23am On Feb 29, 2016
As sure as the sun, the moon, and most basic laws of modern physics, Leonardo DiCaprio has won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in The Revenant . Presenter Julianne Moore, who won Best Actress at last year's awards, waited a respectable amount of time before announcing DiCaprio's name, as if to see if she could make time itself pause briefly in anticipation.

Born in 1974 without a statuette, Leonardo Willhelm DiCaprio has starred in over two dozen films, including Gangs of New York and
The Basketball Diaries. He once had an uncredited role as Darlene's classmate in a 1991 episode of Roseanne. To date, DiCaprio has won over 40 awards and has been nominated six times for an Oscar. This is his first win. The curse is broken.

Following an extended applause, DiCaprio thanked fellow nominees, the cast and crew of
The Revenant (including Best Director winner Alejandro Iñárritu), and even past collaborators like Martin Scorcese. DiCaprio ended his with a big note on the environment:
"Climate change is real, it is happening right now, it is the most urgent threat facing our entire speices and we need to work collectively and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world... whos speak for all of humanity."

Other nominees in the category, who may or may not have even bothered to write acceptance speeches, include Bryan Cranston for Trumbo , Matt Damon for The Martian , Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs , and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl. And now, with Leo's quest at an end, it's time to start looking for the next perpetually snubbed performer to memeify.

Thank you to the Academy and the incredible cast & crew of
#TheRevenant . #Oscars

And now, let's enjoy Leo congratulating Leo

You a joke bro. comparing Makelele to Viera is like Comparing Isco to Messi. They are both good, but Makelele isnt in same league with Viera and Rijkaard
Maybe as footballers these guys were better. But in terms of who was better at what they did and the legacy left behind, I think its a different story. Claude Makelele revolutionised football tactics in doing what he did best as a defensive midfield destroyer. His role was to nullify the No. 10 central attacking midfielder, make hard tackles and distribute short passes. A very
unsophisticated role but instrumental to the success of R. Madrid and Chelsea, at the time. He was so good at his role that every big national team and big club in Europe sought a Makelele for themselves, and football tactics changed.
