Celebrities / Photos Believed To Be The Figure Of Jesus Appears Above Colombian City by babawalexy(m): 10:31pm On Apr 26, 2017
An interesting photo has emerged showing what locals believe to be the figure of Jesus standing over a Colombian city recently ravaged by a landslide just a week ago. The crowd gathered in the north central Colombian region of Caldas to film the figure.

Just last week 17 people had been killed when a month's rainfall fell overnight, resulting in landslides. Yet, as the sun slanted through clouds in Manizales, residents recorded the rare phenomenon on a mountain called Sancancio and those who lost their homes and loved ones in the natural disaster took comfort in choosing to believe that the figure was that of Jesus Christ.

In the video, a man can be heard in the background saying:
"Oh, my God, my blessed God, come here to see the misery. Look at this, look at this, blessing God. Glory to the Lord. Do you see the Lord there, standing up?"

At least 17 people were killed and seven are missing after a landslide sent mud and rocks crashing into several neighborhoods in Manizales, Colombia, the government said on Wednesday, the second deadly landslide in the country this month.

Crime / 2 Policemen Arrested For Stealing Trailer With Goods Worth N30million In Ogun by babawalexy(m): 7:55am On Apr 21, 2016
The Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni announced yesterday that the two policemen alleged to have been involved in the hijacking of a trailer containing auto spare-parts last Saturday in Sagamu, Ogun State have been dismissed and would be duly prosecuted.

According to the allegation leveled against them, Inspector Durojaiye Taiwo and Sergeant Victor Omorokai of the Strike unit of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja, on Saturday night led two other policemen to hijack the trailer which contained goods worth N30 million.

Omorokai was arrested at Okokomaiko in Lagos, was apprehended with the help of the tracking device installed in the trailer.

Owoseni said:
“We did not deny the story; it was all over the media. Some bad fellows committed a crime and it is the stand of the Inspector-General of Police that all bad eggs in the Force be exposed and made to face the law like other ordinary criminals.
“We arrested them and the ones that are on the run, we are going after them. Exhibits have been recovered.
“The crime was committed in Ogun State Police Command and we have handed the ex-policemen to that command to prosecute them in the court of law.
“In the same vein, I want to state that we have not covered anyone of them. They would be tried. The Nigeria police would not spare those who are not worthy of wearing the police uniform.”
Owoseni added that the suspects have been handed over to the Ogun State Police Command which has jurisdiction over the location where the crime was committed.

Politics / Internet Usage In Nigeria Hits 93 Million – NCC by babawalexy(m): 11:18am On Sep 13, 2015
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said that the number of internet users on the country’s telecom networks increased to more than 93 million as at July.

The commission made this known in its Monthly Internet Subscriber Data, obtained by NAN on Saturday in Lagos.

The data revealed that internet user on both the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) and the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks increased to about 735,239 in July.

NAN reports that the number of subscribers that surf the internet in June was put at 92,816,572 but increased to 93,551,811 in the month of July.

The data shows that of the 93,551,811 internet users in July, 93,403,147 were on GSM networks, while 148,664 users were on the CDMA.

Moreso, of the 93,403,147 internet users on the GSM networks in the month under review, MTN Nigeria had 41,101,886 customers browsing the internet on its network.

It stated that MTN had an increase of 616,216 internet subscribers in July after it recorded 40,485,670 users in the month of June.

According to the report, Globacom had 19,330,549 subscribers surfing the net in July as recorded in June.

Airtel Nigeria, it said, had 17,605,852 internet users in the month of July, as against 17,598,626 customers recorded in June.

Internet users on the Airtel Nigeria network increased by 7,226 in July, while Etisalat had 15,393,860 internet users in July, against the 15,285,079 in June.

Those browsing on Etisalat’s network also rose by 108,781 in the month of July.

The NCC also revealed that the CDMA operators (Multi-Links and Visafone), had a joint total of 148,664 internet users on their networks in July.

It showed that the only surviving two CDMA networks in the country listed an increase of 33,016 internet subscribers in the month under review, from the 115,648 users they recorded in June.

Visafone had an increase of 32,980 customers surfing the internet in July, rising to 148,461, compared to the 115,481 users in June.

Multi-Links had 203 internet users in July, adding 38 customers from the June record of 165 users.

It explained that the increase in the use of the internet in the month of July showed that more Nigerians were embracing ICT.

NCC noted that the country was making progress towards achieving 30 per cent broadband penetration by 2018.

Sports / Tottenham Agrees To Release Striker Emmanuel Adebayor From Contract by babawalexy(m): 11:08am On Sep 13, 2015
Tottenham have confirmed they have released striker Emmanuel Adebayor from his contract at the club by mutual consent.

The 31 year-old almost joined Aston Villa in the summer transfer window and that move could now be revived.

A statement on Spurs' official website on Sunday morning said:

"We can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Emmanuel Adebayor which will see him released from his contract with the club.
"We wish Emmanuel well for the future."

Adebayor was told he had no future at Spurs by manager Mauricio Pochettino and was not included in the Argentine's 25-man Premier League squad. He had also not been allocated a squad number at White Hart Lane and had refused to go on international duty with Togo.

"I would not hesitate. If he had the desire to want to come and play football again, I would have taken him in a heartbeat," Sherwood said.
"We still have to respect his decision, whatever he makes. It's his - I can't influence it.
"Am I disappointed? I'm disappointed for him because he's not going to play. He's too good a talent - I've seen that first hand - to not play any football, but unfortunately I don't think there's any window open for him now.
"If he wanted to play in Qatar he would have gone there a long time ago. It's hard to say. I was going to say he's not in it for the money but, genuinely, he wants to play at the top level. It's not financial. It's easy to say that when you're on his money, but he would genuinely play for nothing. It's not his fault he's not part of their plans."

Politics / Bauchi State Govt. Yet To Pay Teachers 11 Months Salary by babawalexy(m): 8:02am On Feb 16, 2015
The Bauchi State Government has promised to pay the 11 months salary arrears owed 2,000 teachers it recruited in April 2014 in installments.

NAN reports that the aggrieved teachers had on Tuesday staged a demonstration at the Government House in Bauchi.

Mohammed Umar, the spokesman of the teachers, told newsmen on Sunday in Bauchi that each teacher would be paid two months salaries in installments until the entire arrears were cleared.

He, however, said that the state government had so far been only able to pay some of the teachers the two months salaries out of the outstanding arrears.

Umar said while the state government complied with its promise to pay part of the salaries in December 2014 and January 2015,
teachers who were not paid during the period were those who protested at the Government House.

Umar explained that government had promised to pay the demonstrating teachers while also rescinding its decision to terminate their appointments.

Government, he said, had attributed the delay in payment of the salaries to problems encountered by officials of the state treasury.

Health / Doctor Performs Surgery On His OWN Tongue To Try And Cure His Snoring Problem by babawalexy(m): 8:27pm On Sep 29, 2014
A doctor who snored terribly for years says he has cured the problem by performing surgery on his own tongue.

Dr Zhang Xiangmin undertook the remarkable operation to help his long-suffering wife sleep.

He believes his snoring was caused by obstructive sleep apnoea, where the throat closes repeatedly during the night.

In severe cases, the airway can become completely blocked, stopping breathing for up to ten seconds, before the brain jolts the body awake, causing the airway to reopen.

During his experimental procedure, Dr Xiangmin inserted two thin pipes through tunnels he made on the back of his tongue.

At night, he loops these pipes onto his teeth to stop his tongue from collapsing and causing him to snore.

Three months on, he has now declared the procedure a success.

Speaking at a press conference in Changsha, the capital of China's Hunan Province, he said:

'The surgery won't affect normal speaking and eating functions at all, and is very safe.'

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a risk factor for a number of conditions, including heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, daytime fatigue and weight gain.

One of the most successful treatments for the condition is a continuous positive airway pressure mask or CPAP, where mildly increased air pressure keeps the airways open during sleep.

However, many people dislike wearing the mask, with some estimates suggesting that only half of sufferers with a CPAP device regularly use it.

Politics / Bomb Scare In Abuja As Motorists Scamper For Safety by babawalexy(m): 11:50am On Aug 21, 2014

Soldiers are about now carrying out a search on the Peugeot 406 car.

A commercial motorcyclist who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES claimed that:
“The driver just parked the car and left in a hurry prompting soldiers nearby to be suspicious and people in traffic on seeing the soldiers surrounding the car began to run in different directions,” he said.

Politics / PHOTO: Meet The Nigerian Who May Become First Black British PM by babawalexy(m): 11:30am On Aug 21, 2014
On May 7, 2015, a Nigerian, Chuka Umunna, could make history by becoming the first black Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Born in London in 1978, Chuka was bred in the UK. His late father, Bennett, hailed from Anambra State while his Irish mother, Patricia, is a solicitor.

Co-incidentally, Chuka shares startling similarities with the United States President, Barack Obama, who is the first black President of the world’s most powerful nation.

For instance, Chuka is of mixed race, being the child of a Nigerian father and an Irish mother while Obama is also of mixed race, being the offspring of a white American woman and a Kenyan father. Also Chuka’s father, Bennett, was killed in a mysterious car accident in Nigeria in 1992 while Obama’s father was killed in a car accident in Kenya in 1982.
If history repeats itself as it is being predicted by British political observers, Chuka, who is also a six-foot tall lawyer like Obama, could become the first black Prime Minister in the UK.

Chuka’s life story is perhaps a better guide to his future political direction. It is the story of a rise from the streets of South London (scene of some of Britain’s worse race riots in the 1980s) to the parliament. But it is not the story that some might expect.

His father, Bennett, was a Nigerian labourer, who arrived in Britain in the sixties with one suitcase and no money. Having borrowed the fare from Liverpool to London, he worked in a carwash, became a successful businessman and died in a car crash when his son was 13.

Bennett began an import-export business trading with Nigeria and was starting to make a decent living when he met Patricia Milmo, a solicitor, at a London party. She happened to be the daughter of Sir Helenus Milmo, a Cambridge-educated High Court judge and a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Nazi trials. They later got married, a rare combination during a time of high social inequality and racism.

Chuka believed his father was killed because he refused to indulge in corrupt practices when he was running for the governorship of Anambra State during the administration of former military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.).

Bennett died after his car ran into a lorry carrying logs along the Onitsha-Owerri highway in Anambra. Bennett had been splitting his time between London and Nigeria – where he unsuccessfully ran for the governorship of Anambra State and had taken a stand against bribery.

At a point Bennett was also the owner of the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu, the darling of the Igbo people.

When quizzed about his father on Sky News, he had this to say: “There was a lot of speculation in Nigeria at the time around his death. He was a national political figure standing on an anti-corruption ticket and refused to bribe anybody.

“We don’t really talk about it because it is not going to bring him back but I think he would be bowled over that his son is now a politician just like him.”

Chuka, an English and French Law graduate from the University of Manchester, who also holds a Master’s degree from Nottingham Law School, says his interest in politics was shaped by seeing extreme poverty while visiting his father’s relatives in Nigeria and the social divide in his own Streatham constituency in the UK. He says that he is “not super-religious” but that his soft-left values are “rooted in my Christianity.”

The 35-year-old Labour Party Member of Parliament, however, has two hurdles to cross if he is to make history in the UK. This is because in the UK, for one to become the Prime Minister, the person must first be a Member of Parliament, the person’s party must win majority of seats out of the 560 seats in the House of Commons during the parliamentary elections and the person must be the leader of his party.

Presently, Chuka is the Member of Parliament for Streatham, a position he has held since 2010 but must re-contest in 2015 and win to retain the seat.

He is also the Shadow Business Secretary, a position held by a member of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. The duty of the office holder is to scrutinise the actions of the government’s Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and develop alternative policies. The office holder is a member of the Shadow Cabinet.

According to the UK Telegraph, Chuka is rumoured to have the strong support of a former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, who was also a Labour Party leader.

According to the British newspaper, when asked if he was Blair’s anointed candidate, Chuka said, “I really don’t know anything about that.” However, when he was pressed further whether he aspired to head his party, he said, “I don’t entertain any discussion beyond winning the election next year. That would be completely hypocritical of me. To start thinking about hypothetical scenarios would be totally indulgent. All my energy is focused on winning the election, and so should everyone’s. It will be very close.”

Chuka is one of the youngest MPs in the UK having been introduced into British politics by the current Labour Party leader, Ed Miliband, while he was in his 20s.

It was Milband that helped him become an MP and later made him his Parliamentary Private Secretary before he was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet in October 2011. He is tipped to become Miliband’s successor and could become the Prime Minister should the Labour Party win next year’s election.

Chuka, however, claims to hate the comparison of him and Obama which he terms the “construct of lazy journalists.” He sharply divides opinion in British politics. Good-looking, articulate, new-media-savvy and a good orator.

According to FT Magazine, he is not universally popular among his own colleagues, who see more style than substance. “He just has a knack of alienating people,” said one experienced Labour MP. “He is probably the most natural communicator I’ve seen since Tony Blair. The problem is that each week he has fewer supporters than he did at the start of the week.”

Even potential allies recount stories of apparent slights or snubs. A senior party figure says, “Chuka has put people’s backs up. They feel he is inaccessible.” Another long-serving MP adds, “The idea of learning the trade first is only for mere mortals, not for him.” Peter Mandelson, the former Labour business secretary who played a key role in Blair’s rise through to the top, thinks the explanation for this is quite simple, “Envy plays a big part in politics,” he says.

Like Blair, Chuka sometimes connects better with those beyond his own circle. John Cridland, head of the CBI employers’ group, calls him “a guy with whom we can do business.” Andrew Tyrie, Tory Chair of the Commons Treasury Committee, say: “He’s extremely talented and charming.” Andrew Adonis, a former Labour minister, sums up his cross-party appeal: “The best politicians are those who look outwards not inwards.”

However, allies of the current British PM, David Cameron, scoffed at the idea that Chuka might represent a threat to Cameron’s second term bid.

“I can’t think of any issue where he’s put us under pressure,” says one close friend of the prime minister. “He’s pretty average – he’s a slick corporate lawyer.”

Also, among his fellow party members, Chuka’s lack of political definition is another source of irritation as some claim they struggle to work out what he really believes in. But Chuka says people should show a bit more patience. “It would be rather unhealthy if after just three years in parliament I was setting out some blueprint for my country,” he says. “What do people expect?”

But some see him as the potential leader of a mainstream 21st-Century Labour party with the kind of crossover appeal of Blair’s New Labour. Despite initial reservations that Chuka might be a bit too left-wing, Blair has started seeing him regularly. “Chuka strikes Tony as very smart,” says one close ally of the former PM. “Business is a particularly important brief in tough economic times and Chuka seems to be rising to the challenge.”

As if Blair’s blessing was not enough, Chuka recalls the “honour” of spending “a small bit of private time with former US President, Bill Clinton, who he describes as one of his political heroes. “I think he defies the left-right description,” Mandelson says in approbation. “He’s part of a generation that transcends those labels.”

He has also recently been to Europe to meet his friend, the French PM, Manuel Valls.

According to statistics, almost 15 per cent of people in Britain describe themselves as “non-white” but the country has never had a party leader from an ethnic minority background. Nobody has ever come close. Chuka confesses that until his late teens he had not even thought about a career in politics because there was “nobody who looked like me” running the country.

Chuka has been vocal in the call for a reduction in government spending as well as issues on immigration. “They [the French] have something like 40 ministers compared to our 80,” he says.

On the EU itself, he has called for reform, saying not long ago that free movement of workers was not intended to mean free movement of jobseekers. “As one of the most pro-European shadow ministers, I don’t think you can ignore the impact that free movement has had on some of our communities,” he says, adding that it has changed because there are “many more EU members.”

He adds, “There’s a number of things we need to look at. Those who tend to raise the issue of immigration with me are my African and Asian constituents. They want confidence there are proper controls.

“They want to see people integrate, which is why we shouldn’t be spending all this money translating documents and [instead] directing resources to ensure people learn English. And you do need to look at free movement.”

Next year’s election may not be based on ethnicity but it obviously will be hard not to notice that a British-Nigerian could become the leader of one of the world’s wealthiest countries.

On the issue of ethnicity, Chuka has this to say, “A lot of people presume – because of my ethnicity – that I come from a particular social background. I am very quick to disabuse people of any sense that I’ve wanted and struggled in the way that, say, my father did. I come from a fairly middle-class background. People try and pigeonhole you in a box and I find that frustrating sometimes.”

If Chuka is hard to pigeonhole, that may be linked to his own pedigree. It seems likely, if not certain, that Chuka, whose name means God is the greatest, is destined to become a larger presence in his party and thus a bigger potential target despite being a person whose father came to the UK from Nigeria without a dime.

Sports / LOYALTY! Man Gets Manchester United Club Crest Tattoo On His Forehead (photo) by babawalexy(m): 11:21am On Aug 21, 2014
Mr. Levidzhov can only be described as a super fan, as the huge Manchester United fan has won a 15-year legal battle to officially change his name to Manchester Zdravkov Levidzhov-United.

To celebrate the landmark occasion, he had that little beauty (it’s not really that subtle, is it?) tattooed on his forehead.

Now when he is asked his name, according to the story from the Sun newspaper in the UK, Levidzhov simply points to his forehead and laughs.

According to Soccerly reports, this dude has taken fandom to a new level.
We can now call a fan in Bulgaria by the name of Mr. Manchester United as a man just won a 15-year legal battle to change his name to that of the club he so dearly follows. To celebrate his official name change, the Bulgarian fan once in for all made sure everyone knew what is most important in his head, literally.
Officially his name has changed to Manchester Zdravkov Levidzhov-United, but it will be easier just to call him Mr. Manchester United.
In an interview with The Sun, Mr. Manchester United proudly stated that when people now ask his name, he just points to his forehead and smiles. He also affirmed that there is nothing silly about his tattoo.
“People don’t look at me in a funny way, they look in admiration,” said Mr. Manchester United with a confident look in his face- that same confidence which convinced him to tattoo his forehead with the club’s crest.

This is what I stand for times they have also turned around to say sorry. For heaven’s sake, I am responsible for the actions and decisions that I take.”

It actually starts with character, personality and what beliefs. Everything wrong today actually started from the content of a character. Health / Fear Grips Edo Community As Man With Suspected Ebola Symptoms Dies by babawalexy(m): 5:51pm On Aug 11, 2014
There was anxiety at Udo community in Orhiomwon Local Government Council of Edo state, last Sunday following the death of a middle aged man whom some people in the community allege he died of the dreaded Ebola virus. But others said, the deceased was an epileptic patient and had died after an attack.

However, some villagers who have been listening to radio and are aware of the symptoms of Ebola say he died of the virus because they observed blood in some parts of his body with foam in his mouth.
Before he died, the villagers said they noticed the symptom which made them cover their hands and other parts of their body and bundled him into an empty bus and ordered the driver to take him to a hospital for treatment.

The driver however refused for fear of contacting the virus and found a way of taking him down from his vehicle.

The ministry of health was however contacted, but when they got there, the man had already died. He was later taken away so that his body could be isolated and the possible reasons for his death known.

Some of the villagers have already flee the community for fear of contacting the disease.

However an official at the ministry of health said; “Though we heard he was an epileptic patient but we just want to be sure about the cause of death. His corpse has been isolated and we can only talk more when the result of the test is out’’.

Politics / “my Oracle Predicts Aregbesola’s Victory” – Araba Of Osogbo by babawalexy(m): 11:28am On Aug 09, 2014
The Araba of Osogbo, Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon, yesterday, while delivering a lecture on Yoruba culture and tradition at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park in Osogbo at the Yoruba Youth Leadership Summit said his oracle has predicted Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s victory in tomorrow’s election.

He also debunked a rumour that his oracle predicted electoral doom for the governor. Elebuibon noted that the development in the state was unprecedented and the Almighty God, the Ifa Oracle and the people were yearning for more. He urged the people to vote for Aregbesola. Comrade Awa Bamiji, Chairman, Organising Committee, pledged the support of over 60% youths and students in the State for the 2nd term ambition of the Governor and asked Senator Iyiola Omisore to clear himself and his associates including the National Secretary of PDP, State of Osun PDP Chairman, Minister of Police Affairs accused of Ige’s murder before thinking of any election in Nigeria.

He also condemned the use of black masks, unnumbered hilux pick up vans and parading the heavy heavy guns in the public places by all deployed operatives particularly canteens/beer parlours which he described as unwanted. He wondered how this same DSS operatives would be able to call the masquerade bodyguards being used by Senator Omisore to order.

He cautioned President Jonathan against precipitating the Nation into another political war for his selfish 2015 ambition. Whole World is watching and we youths are also putting INEC, deployed DSS operatives and Army officers under surveillance and we shall cry out in mass but peaceful protest in case of any foul play at election.

Business / Study Shows Africans Spent Over $7 Billion On Weaves, Wigs, And Relax Last Year by babawalexy(m): 11:18pm On Aug 07, 2014
According to a new report by Reuters, the African hair care business has become a multi-billion dollar industry; so much so that just last year alone, over $7 billion dollars (N1.7 trillion) was spent!
Read their report below:
With all the skill of a master weaver at a loom, Esther Ogble stands under a parasol in the sprawling Wuse market in Nigeria's capital and spins synthetic fibre into women's hair. Nearby, three customers - one in a hijab - wait for a turn to spend several hours and $40 to have their hair done, a hefty sum in a country where many live on less than $2 a day.

While still largely based in the informal economy, the African haircare business has become a multi-billion dollar industry that stretches to China and India and has drawn global giants such as L'Oreal and Unilever.
Hairdressers such as Ogble are a fixture of markets and taxi parks across Africa, reflecting both the continent's rising incomes and demand from hair-conscious women.
"I need to braid my hair so that I will look beautiful," said 25-year-old Blessing James, wincing as Ogble combed and tugged at the back of her head before weaving in a plait that fell well past the shoulder.
While reliable Africa-wide figures are hard to come by, market research firm Euromonitor International estimates $1.1 billion of shampoos, relaxers and hair lotions were sold in South Africa, Nigeria and Cameroon alone last year. It sees the liquid haircare market growing by about 5 percent from 2013 to 2018 in Nigeria.
This does not include sales from more than 40 other sub-Saharan countries, or the huge "dry hair" market of weaves, extensions and wigs crafted from everything from synthetic fibre to human or yak hair.
Some estimates put Africa's dry hair industry at as much as $6 billion a year; Nigerian singer Muma Gee recently boasted that she spends 500,000 naira ($3,100) on a single hair piece made of 11 sets of human hair.
In one clue to the potential for Africa, market research firm Mintel put the size of the black hair care market in the United States at $684 million in 2013, estimating that it could be closer to $500 billion if weaves, extensions and sales from independent beauty stores or distributors are included.
What is certain is that Africa's demand for hair products, particularly those made from human hair, is only growing.
"It hurts, but you have to endure if you want to look nice," said Josephine Ezeh, who sat in Wuse market cradling a baby as a hairdresser tugged at her head. "Hair is very, very important."

Politics / Earthquake Hits South Africa by babawalexy(m): 2:02pm On Aug 05, 2014
A 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit central South Africa today, shaking buildings in Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

The US Geological Survey said the tremor was centred in Orkney, 170 km southwest of Johannesburg, an area with a high concentration of deep gold mines. Lindy Sirayi, a guesthouse owner in Orkney, said the tremor broke glass lampshades and cracked a wall, and that dogs startedbarking during the quake, which lasted about a minute. She said she received a telephone call informing her that two people were injured at a nearby mine. The quake was also felt in Pretoria, the South African capital, and Hartbeespoort, a nearby resort town.

The area has periodic, moderate tremors, though the quake on Tuesday was one of the strongest in recent years. There are no immediate reports of casualties.
