HealthHe Was Asked To Hold Torchlight While Surgeons Continue Operating His Body by babeface3(op): 9:41pm On Apr 27, 2015
Just this evening, my landlord's son was wheeled out of the theatre and he narrated his experience:

While the operation was halfway in one of the famous private hospitals in Lagos, the generator developed fault at almost 8.30pm. A light that was part of the stretcher (or the theatre bed) probably rechargeable, switched on automatically. As the operation progressed, almost at the concluding point, the light also went dead. Then a big torch light was handed to one of the aids who struggled to get a vantage point without much success.

The light was then handed to him (patient) to hold on his chest while he lay still.

The sweat running from the chief surgeon's body was almost falling into the place being operated upon. He was wheeled out at exactly 9.30.

He told me not to mention the type of operation for some reasons.

Which way Naija, can we come out of this power problem?

PoliticsRe: Asari Dokubo Flaunts Allegiance With Biafran Struggle by babeface3: 2:28pm On Apr 27, 2015
Which Asari, when Biafra needed your people during the war, where were they? They were busy selling Biafran peoples property in Portharcourt. It was some few patriots like Elechi Amadi and the rest that stood for the Biafran cause. The likes of Late Saro Wiwa masterminded the betrayal of the Biafrans. When something was seriously at stake, they said they were not Biafrans and floated their MOSSOB and co. Now that a die hard Army General has won, they realised they can no longer do it alone and with the allegiance of the Igbo people to GEJ.

My Advise to Uwazuruike: Go away from Asari if you must continue this struggle.

You are a calculated i.diot. Why did you not vote GEJ for enforcement of the CONFAB? was that not part of the reasons the North did not want him, because they want the status quo of sharing money to their people and begging the youths to go to school free. Dveloping their place with money that come from squalid communities in Niger Delta. Lets continue to pray for Nigeria cos its not yet uhuru!

Methinks these counter-terrorism cops have been put through a version of SERE(Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) training. It is done without the consent of the trainees, leading them to believe that they are in grave danger, just to see how the react under such circumstances. Detaining a unit on trumped up charges, and denying them basic human necessities or even applying torture is commonplace in SERE training received by US Special Ops Forces. It is to evaluate and condition the soldier to react appropriately in the event that he finds himself in enemy hands.
Our counter-terrorism cops just failed their SERE course. . . . . .make una no quote me sha, no be today soldier begin beat police for naija.

Police dey always do mumu mumu in anything they do. Person wey place you under military knows you should obey their command.

Whats the meaning of impersonation in wearing a military fatigue for training?

These police guys are so disappointing. No wonder Ojukwu declined answering questions from the press?

Nigerian police display ignorance in everything they do. I think they need more discipline. It serves those guys right.

Ignorance, Ignorance and Ignorance in anything police is doing?

Please what are we going to do about police ignorance? huh tongue
HealthWoman's Tumor Turns Out To Be The Bone, Teeth And Hair Of Her Unborn Twin Sis by babeface3(op): 8:02am On Apr 24, 2015
Woman’s brain tumor turns out to be ‘evil twin’ complete with bone, hair and teeth

Something was wrong with Yamini Karanam.

The PhD student had moved from Hyderabad, India, to Indianapolis to study computer science. But her new life in America was amiss. Once a brilliant student, she now had trouble understanding simple articles. Friends and colleagues would say things to her, only for the sentences to get mixed up in her mind.

Because that’s where Karanam’s problem lay: deep within her brain.

She went on holiday last fall but returned even more exhausted than when she left. Karanam slept for two weeks straight, missing school.

“Then came the headaches. Slips and misses at work followed,” she wrote on her blog. “There were doctors. First, a couple of them and then more.” Then came the “revelation”: doctors spotted what they thought was a cyst on Karanam’s pineal gland, a tiny pea-like structure in the center of the brain that French philosopher René Descartes called the “principal seat of the soul.”

“The fear didn’t sink in yet,” Karanam wrote. “[My] will was undeterred because it was hardly put to test. [My] energy levels were sinking and fatigue started crippling [my] days. … Months and weeks slipped through [my] fingers. There weren’t any diagnostic procedures left to run on [me]. Consultations followed procedures but nobody said anything useful. It was like white noise passed from the doctor to the patient to the support system. Now, they called it a tumor and that’s all 21st century medicine could do in three months.”

Karanam grew sicker and sicker as the tumor grew larger and larger. Reading was impossible. Soon, walking was, too. Only 26 years old, Karanam could barely eat. Pains ran from her head throughout her body.

“But the men of science found no correlation between her suffering and the images,” she wrote. “[I] thought they would take [my] problems and own them. But they don’t and they didn’t. There was frustration and anger. Most of all, there was self-doubt. When sanity is in question, the best of us lose ourselves to the answer.”

Desperate to save Karanam’s life, her friends set up a fundraising account online.

“Yamini, a PhD student at Indiana University’s School of Informatics and one of my best friends, was diagnosed with a pineal tumor a few months ago,” the Web site read. “She has been seeing quite a few neurologists and neurosurgeons across the country in the past 6 months. Most of the doctors seem to think that the location of the tumor poses a lot of risks to the surgery and they think that the tumor could cause irreversible damage to her brain.”

“Could you please put an end to it one way or the other?” Karanam finally wrote to someone — God, doctors, anyone — on March 15.

Then came the medical procedure — a miracle by another name, really — that would save Karanam’s life and reveal the bizarre malady behind her meltdown.

Karanam found a doctor, Hrayr Shahinian, performing radical “keyhole” brain surgeries at something called the Skullbase Institute in Los Angeles. Using the $32,437 her friends had raised for her, Karanam flew out to L.A. and put her life in Shahinian’s hands.

Shahinian made a tiny incision in the back of Karanam’s head, then strung an endoscope into her skull and through a natural channel in her brain to the site of the tumor. That’s when the doctor made a startling discovery.

Karanam’s tumor wasn’t just a tumor. It was a teratoma: a clump of bone, hair and teeth. A Frankenstein’s monster within Karanam’s own mind.

Teratomas have baffled scientists for almost a century. Some have speculated that they are basically twins that never quite develop and are instead absorbed into the surviving baby’s body. In fact, newborns occasionally have large teratomas attached to them like a conjoined twin. Other times, it’s not until adulthood that people realize they have one. In 2009, a British man named Gavin Hyatt “gave birth” to an “undeveloped identical twin” when a small lump pushed its way out of his abdomen. Hyatt named the tiny creature “little Gav.” Earlier this year, doctors in Hong Kong discovered two partially developed fetuses inside a newborn’s abdomen.

[Baby girl had had two fetuses inside her abdomen — possibly her twins]

It’s not clear whether Karanam’s tumor was really her twin. But it was killing her. Shahinian successfully removed the tumor, which was not cancerous. He now expects Karanam to make a full recovery.

“This is my second one,” he said of the intracranial teratoma, “and I’ve probably taken out 7,000 or 8,000 brain tumors.”

When Karanam awoke in the hospital, she was stunned to learn that her tumor wasn’t just a lump of cells, but her “evil twin sister who’s been torturing me for the past 26 years,” she told NBC 4.

Physically, Karanam should be back to normal in three weeks. But her near brush with death at the hands of her own “twin” has clearly affected her. Her blog is titled, “The ‘n’ Phases of her Tumor,” which is basically a math joke about her ordeal. It features a blue cloud with a smiley face that could be easily confused for the tumor she had removed.

“It’s more of a happy brain!” Karanam tells The Washington Post. But she admits that her experience has left her with a strange connection to her twin.

“I was stuck with it much longer than I thought,” she says. “It doesn’t leave you much choice other than to deal with it the best you can.”

Health12 Habits That Make You Look Older by babeface3(op): 6:30pm On Apr 23, 2015
TURN BACK THE CLOCK
Aging is inevitable, but you can still feel and look younger than your years if you know a few facts. If you’re fatigued in the middle of the day or notice new lines on your face in the morning, your everyday habits may be adding more years to you than you know. Experts give advice on ways to turn back the clock.
Bypass these bad habits to avoid looking old beyond your years.

YOU’RE A NIGHT OWL
Staying up late is fun in your teens, but burning the midnight oil can make you look older as you age. Beauty sleep is not just an old wives' tale. “Sleep deprivation causes bags under the eyes and droopy, tired eyelids and pallor,” says Dr. Allen Towfigh, a board-certified sleep medicine doctor and neurologist affiliated with Weill Cornell Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital. “This makes us look less healthy, and, hence, we appear less attractive to others.” To determine how much sleep you need to look your best, add up the number of hours of sleep you get over a period of two weeks (including naps) and divide by 14.

YOU HOLD GRUDGES
If you’re unable to let bygones be bygones, you may add years to your body. Several studies show a link between forgiveness and physical health. A study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine from 2005 showed that a lack of forgiveness increased nervous symptom activity, contributing to a greater number of medications taken and decreased sleep quality. “Holding a grudge increases stress, which boosts levels of the hormone cortisol,” says Dr. Jennifer Landa, chief medical officer of BodyLogicMD, an anti-aging network. “Cortisol contributes to weight gain, raises blood pressure, elevates blood sugar and increases the risk of diabetes.” Learn how to let go, and you may live longer.

YOU EXERCISE ONLY WHEN YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT
If your exercise plan starts every Jan. 1 and lasts only until you’re able to fit back into your jeans, you may be cheating yourself out of longevity. Many studies show that regular exercise helps prevent age-related diseases and prolongs life span. “Daily exercise helps lower cortisol levels and increases beneficial hormones like testosterone,” says Landa. “It also helps control high blood pressure, improve mood and keeps us strong and flexible as we age.” The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 30 minutes of activity most days of the week.

YOU HAVE A SWEET TOOTH
If you never say no to dessert, you may be saying yes to more wrinkles. “Sugar increases aging of every part of our body,” says Landa. “Eating a diet high in sugar will not only damage your waistline but it will increase your risk of diabetes and can even cause skin problems, especially acne and wrinkles.” When you eat sugar a process called glycation occurs, where the sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins, forming new molecules called advanced glycation end products, or AGEs for short. These AGEs damage nearby protein fibers that keep skin elastic. “A better choice would be dark chocolate with low sugar, or if you need to use sweeteners, consider monk fruit, a natural sweetener that doesn’t raise blood sugar,” suggests Landa.

YOU SMOKE
It’s time to kick those butts to the curb if you want to live a long, healthy life. A clear link between smoking and longevity exists, and the earlier you quit the more years you add to your life. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2002 showed that smokers who quit at age 35 add approximately eight years to their life, compared with people who continue to smoke. Smokers who quit at age 65 add between two to four years of longevity. “Smoking causes the release of free radicals . . . which is like rust for your body,” says Landa. “Smokers have higher risks of almost any disease under the sun, including cancer, heart disease, dementia and generally premature death.”

YOU RUB YOUR EYES
Tired eyes? Avoid rubbing them if you want to stay younger-looking. Rubbing your eyes breaks down the collagen and elasticity around the area, which produces wrinkles and broken capillaries. “The skin in this area is incredibly thin and extremely sensitive and vulnerable to sun damage and wrinkling,” says Dr. Dennis Gross, a dermatologist and founder of 900 5th Dermatology in New York City. “This is why rubbing your eyes may result in broken capillaries.” For relief from tired or irritated eyes, instead of rubbing them, try brewing two green tea bags, allow them to cool and place them over your eyes for 10 minutes. If you are concerned about broken capillaries, look for ingredients that build collagen. Applying creams that contain vitamins K and D, as well as including them as part of a balanced diet, can also help.

YOU DRINK ALCOHOL TO EXCESS
A moderate amount of alcohol has heart healthy-benefits, but an excess shortens your life, according to a study published in the January 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research. Alcohol-dependent women showed a 4.6-fold higher death rate compared with the general population; alcoholic-dependent men have a nearly twofold higher risk of dying earlier than the average male. Excess alcohol can lead to heart failure and high blood pressure as well as cirrhosis of the liver and weight gain. The American Heart Association recommends that men limit themselves to one to two drinks a day, and one drink a day for women (one drink is a 12-ounce beer or four ounces of wine).

YOU LOSE AND GAIN THE SAME 10 TO 20 POUNDS
Stay young by attaining a healthy body weight and sticking to it. Losing and regaining weight ages you by increasing your risk of heart disease and diabetes, according to a 2012 study published in The Journals of Gerontology, Series A, Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences. In the study, 80 overweight and obese women followed a five-month diet, losing an average of 25 pounds. They regained an average of 32 percent of the lost weight within the following year. The women who regained weight had increased levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, total cholesterol, insulin levels and measurements of insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes The levels after weight regain were worse than before the women dieted. Dietary counseling and a maintenance program can help.

YOU SLEEP WITH YOUR FACE IN THE PILLOW
Sleeping with your face smashed into the pillow can make you look years older in a couple of ways. “Persistently pressing your face into a pillow causes trauma to the skin,” says dermatologist Gross. Over time, this trauma, aggravated by the friction of a cotton pillowcase, can create permanent creases as collagen breaks down. The skin’s ability to regenerate itself is also compromised by the impaired circulation to the part of the face pressed into the pillow, says Gross. Sleep on your back to stay younger-looking, or use a satin pillowcase to minimize the friction.

YOU DON’T HAVE A WAY TO DE-STRESS
When did you last take a vacation or simply relax? Men living moderate- to high-stress lifestyles for a number of years have a 50 percent higher mortality rate, according to a 2011 study from the Journal of Aging Research. The study involved approximately 1,000 healthy men and studied them for an 18-year period. Experiencing more than two major life events a year was enough to increase mortality risk. Chronic stress is linked to many diseases, including cardiovascular, asthma and autoimmune disorders, so taking steps to de-stress can help reduce your risk. The Mayo Clinic recommends using the “four A’s” to relax: avoid the source of stress, alter your reaction to it, accept things as they are or adapt by changing your expectations.

YOU EAT MOST OF YOUR FOOD ON THE RUN OR OUT OF A BOX
Living on junk food and fast food dumps unhealthy levels of sodium, fat and cholesterol into your system, which boosts the aging process and increases the likelihood of obesity. “With weight gain comes a higher risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes,” says Amy Goodson, a board-certified specialist in sport dietetics and the Dallas Cowboys sports dietitian. Avoiding processed foods and eating more whole foods reduces the amount of added sugar and fat in your diet and decreases these risks. “Whole, unprocessed foods are also high in fiber, which promotes low cholesterol,” says Goodson. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish (salmon, trout, tuna), walnuts and flaxseed also help decrease inflammation in the body and promote healthy skin and reduce the development of wrinkles.

YOU RARELY DRINK WATER
Increasing the amount of water you drink each day may be the key to younger-looking skin. Water is essential to maintaining skin moisture and helps deliver essential nutrients to the skin, says nutritionist Goodson. “Water helps your skin cells rejuvenate faster. On the reverse, loss of hydration in the skin can cause dryness, tightness, flakiness and tends to make you look older,” she says. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling, which can make you look older. In addition to drinking water, Goodson recommends eating foods high in water content, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini and eggplant, which are more than 90 percent water.
