Sports / 2018 Aiteo Cup : How Rangers Stunned Pillars In A Dramatic Comeback To Win by Babygiwa(f): 5:19am On Oct 25, 2018
Rangers International FC of Enugu on Wednesday in Asaba stunned Kano Pillars in a dramatic comeback from three goals down to win the 2018 Aiteo Cup on penalties.

Rangers v Pillars in league action

The game which was played at the 25,000 capacity Stephen Keshi Stadium had ended 3-3 at regulation time, after Rangers fought gallantly from three goals deficit to level up the game.

Pillars, backed by over 400 travelling supporters, had dominated the first half of the game, with great display of soccer artistry to the cheering spectators.

The first goal of the encounter came in the 5th minute of play when Pillars old warhorse, Rabiu Ali, found space between two Rangers defenders to slot in from close range.

The early goal seemed to spur Pillars into action, as they took absolute control of the midfield, dictating the play as Rangers defenders laboured helplessly to curtail the rampaging Pillars attackers, led by Junior Lokosa.

The dominant Pillars got their second goal of the game in the 20th minute of the second half when a corner kick by Alhassan Ibrahim was parried into goal by Rangers first choice goalkeeper, Femi Thomas.

Pillars got their third goal in the 47th minute when striker Nwagua Nymar took advantage of a mixup in Rangers defence to slot home from close range.

Rangers players, however, bounced back, when midfielder Kelvin Itoya powered home a stunner from outside the 18 yard box, in what can be arguably described as the best goal of the game.

Not done yet, Rangers went on the rampage, after two Pillars players got injured in a space of 15 minutes and were stretched out of the field of play and taken in an ambulance to the hospital.

The flying antelopes got their second goal of the night in the 82nd minute, when midfielder Chidera Ezeh scored after free-flowing counter attack.

The turning point of the night came in the 92nd minute of extra time, when Ajani Ibrahim sent the entire stadium into frenzy with a clinical finish after he beat a helpless Pillars defender to leveled the game at 3-3.

The game became a physical combat as tempers flared among the players of the two teams, but referee, Adebimpe Quadiri, who stamped his authority on the game, kept the tensed nerves at bay.

The game went directly into penalties, and in the ensuing shootout, Pillars duo of Rabiu Ali and Jimoh Ismaila lost their penalties, while Rangers scored all its five penalties, ending the 5-3 to lift the trophy.

Reacting, Rangers coach, Gbenga Ogunbote said that “determination and Gov. Ugwuanyi’s presence saw us through”.

Ogunbote attributed his team’s comeback victory to determination and teamwork.

He also disclosed that the presence of Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, made a huge impact on his players as they fought back to turn the table against Kano Pillars.

“Frankly speaking, we made a huge mistake in our game tonight, we gave away possessions and that gave our opponents so many chances. But as a coach, I take blame whether we won or lost.

“However, during the first half break, we told ourselves the truth, we talked to one another and realised we could still make it. We believe in our determination to fight back and it paid off.

“But most importantly, the presence of our governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who came to our dressing room to have a talk with the players made a huge difference too. He is a father figure to us.

“The governor charged the players not to lose hope in the remaining 45 minutes of play. He assured them of his support and told them to give their best in the remaining half of the game,” Ogunbote said.

On his first choice goalkeeper, Femi Thomas, who was abruptly replaced after he conceded three goals, Ogunbote said he could not single out the keeper for blame, rather he attributed his performance to ill-luck.

“Femi had a bad day today, and that is how it is in football. I can’t say he is not a good goalkeeper because he conceded three goals. Football is like that, some days are just so disappointing,” Ogunbote added.

Also, Rangers attacking midfielder, Ugonna Uzochukwu, told NAN that sheer determination saw his team come back into the game after trailing by three goals.

He said though the players felt dejected after the referee blew the whistle for half-time break because they had wanted to score before the break.

“We almost lost hope in today’s game. But during the half time break, we told ourselves that we can do it. We knew we committed a lots of mistakes.

“However, we were determined to put in our best in the remaining part of the game and that was why you saw a different Enugu Rangers with a different character in the second half,” Uzochukwu said.

The Coach and players of Kano Pillars, could not be reach for comments, as they hurriedly left the stadium after the official presentation of medals.

NAN reports that two state governors, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and his counterpart from Enugu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as well as the deputy governors of Kano and Edo states were in attendance.

Politics / Enugu Group Raises Alarm Over Destruction Of PDP Billboards by Babygiwa(f): 9:39pm On Oct 22, 2018
An advocacy group for the promotion of good governance in Enugu State, Youth Coalition for Good Governance, has raised the alarm over plans by members of an opposition political party in the state “to destroy all billboards erected in strategic locations in Enugu by teeming supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led state government”.

A statement by the group’s coordinator and secretary, Hon. Ikechukwu Ibeh and Engr. Jude Onyema, revealed that the arrowheads of the plotters had a clandestine meeting in Enugu where it was agreed, among other “nefarious acts” to destroy billboards that were “voluntarily mounted by PDP supporters as a way of demonstrating their firm support for the party and its government in Enugu State”.

They added that the alarm became necessary in view of the level of desperation being exhibited by the opponents of the government and “the need to expose their immoral plan against the high-performing and people-oriented administration in the state, which has continued to receive tremendous support and endorsements from the people of Enugu State”.

The group added that the ulterior motive of those behind the plan, in their usual tradition, revolved around their selfish political interest in 2019 general elections, stressing that they are “very perturbed” over the unprecedented solidarity, goodwill and support the state government enjoys from the people as a result of the existing peace, security and good governance in the state.

They therefore advised all PDP support groups and residents of the state to be vigilante and report any suspicious movement around the billboards located strategically across the state, to the security agencies for necessary action.

Politics / APC Primaries In Enugu A Charade – Okechukwu, VON DG by Babygiwa(f): 7:23pm On Oct 21, 2018

Threatens to go to court if his name is not submitted to INEC

“It was a charade. Even when we dig further they said that the Juliet Ibekaku that was presented, it was the Deputy Senate President that influenced it.”

The Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, is not happy with the way and manner his party handled its primaries.

In this chat, the senatorial aspirant in Enugu State claimed that the primaries that were conducted in his state were defective, leading to him being shortchanged. Aside that, he accused the Osunbor-led Appeal Panel of insincerity and aggravating the already bad situation. On the presidential election , the politician warned the Southeast that it will be tantamount to boarding a ‘one chance’ bus if they vote for PDP in 2019.

Is the huge dust raised by the primaries of your party across the country not an indication that it is not leading by example?

Let me start by saying that it is not unusual in a big market to have bigger noise. The good luck APC has is that the presidential candidate of the party, President Muhammadu Buhari is not being contested by any of the tendencies. That is the golden armour that we are going to battle with is that in all the states of the federation where the different tendencies exist everybody is in support of President Buhari. Everybody believes that it is in the interest of the country that he wins a second tenure. So, for that the crisis might not be as deep as a lot of people are thinking.

If it is not that deep as you claim, why are some chieftains threatening to dump the party?
Even those who are leaving the party know that President Buhari remains their best choice. I know of Captain Orji who was shortchanged in Enugu, he ran for Oji River/Awgu/ Aninri Federal Constituency and actually won, but he was shortchanged. He has gone to APGA. But his leaving APC for APGA does not mean that the man I know is not for President Buhari. Wherever they are, they will vote for President Buhari.

The Appeal Panel seems not to have met the expectation of aggrieved contestants, is the impression correct?

On the issue of the Appeal Panel headed by Prof Osunbor, I was highly embarrassed the way it handled its assignment. I was embarrassed that it was only one panel that was set up for the multi-faceted crises across the country. Secondly, to the best of my knowledge the Appeal Panel never met. I submitted my own petition to the party secretariat. I also went to Prof Osunbor whom I have great respect for, I gave him the petition. We kept on talking on a daily basis. Even when I was traveling home for the marriage of my daughter I sought his permission, I told him that if he needs me I can fly back to Abuja from Enugu. For over a week I was never invited to face the panel. I asked other people who petitioned, nobody said he was met by the panel. It is a big embarrassment. Under the constitution of APC, it provided for the job of the panel. When our kangaroo result was announced at Nike Lake Resort on Friday October 5, my supporters wanted to engage in fisticuffs, I was the one that called them to order. I told them that the constitution of the APC has a proviso for an appeal panel. And immediately the Appeal Panel was set up we sent in our petitions. But to my surprise, the Appeal Panel never met. It is one of those culture of impunity that we have been running away from. I did not know that Comrade Oshiomhole, somebody I have great respect for, would constitute a panel and it will not meet. Unless if there is an agenda to sideline some of us. But I have asked a lot of petitioners and nobody said that they sat anywhere.

Have you informed Oshiomhole about the development?

I have made my position public through the media. I have also made it known to officials of the party.

Why did you use the word kangaroo to describe the primaries held in your district, is it because you were defeated?

No, it is not because I didn’t win. The NWC of the party that derives its authority from the NEC of APC held a meeting and wrote letters to the chapters. They asked, do you want direct or indirect primaries or consensus as stated in the constitution of the APC? The leadership of Enugu State chapter agreed on indirect primaries. It started with the governorship on October 1. After some issues, which is normal in primaries, the panel headed by Prof Momoh started calling the local government areas in alphabetical order. In finishing with delegates in four LGAs a call came from the Comrade Chairman. He even asked of me and sought to know how the whole thing was going, I told him it was going on well. He told me that the panel said everything was going well, but that he heard that it is not going well. I asked if he would like to talk with the Commissioner of Police who was there with us, he said no. I asked if he would like to speak with the Director of DSS, he said no. After an hour, the officers conducting the primaries announced that they were closing down, I asked why. They said it is the order from above. We asked them to please count the votes already cast so that we don’t start the next morning with it. They counted the votes. Our governorship candidate had about 475, the runners-up 153. We closed down with that. The next morning we got a directive that it must be direct primaries. We started working along that line. The senatorial and Federal House that was supposed to take place that day was shifted to Wednesday, governorship to Thursday. We complied. When everything was finished eventually and we collated our results, the results were not announced for days.

Are you saying that the entire primaries conducted in Enugu lacked credibility?

It was a charade. Even when we dig further they said that the Juliet Ibekaku that was presented, it was the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu that influenced it. He said it mustn’t be Osita, that anybody was permissible. He is looking for a weaker candidate.

Is Ekweremadu determining what happens in your party?

You know when a panel that was set up did not keep straight, a lot of speculation had to take center stage. Even in my petition I requested the Appeal Panel to screen the call log between October 1 when the eight-man panel arrived Enugu and the time they left. I challenge the authorities to call for the call log of members of the panel, especially the chairman.

You suspected he worked for who?

A lot of speculation on why they did not keep straight. That is what I am saying. I was even disappointed with our governorship candidate, Senator Ayogu Eze. When I asked him if he was aware of the manipulation, he said it was two days before the result was released that he got wind of it. I said so you were aware that the result was being manipulated and you kept quiet, is that how you want to be governor. The irony is that Ayogu has not stayed up to three months in the party till date.

Enugu State chapter of the APC has been in crisis, is it likely that the reconciliation that was said to has been brokered was a ruse?

What you should know is that there is a general culture of impunity and imposition. What caused it in one state, or constituency might not be what caused it in another. You can imagine, if not that we are lucky that Mr President was not affected. The party could have been in a big mess.

Are you saying the leadership of the party at the national level didn’t do its homework very well?

Comrade Oshiomhole that I know, my little assessment of what happened to him is that he was like coming into the office with a blackboard. Anything that the previous Chief John Oyegun did, he placed it on a blackboard and thought he had a white handkerchief on the other hand which was a big mistake because it was the same congresses that Oyegun conducted in 2014 that gave us the edge and it was the same platform that produced him as the current chairman. I think he came with a very wrong mindset. Either he felt he wants to clear the Augean stable when there is none or any other reason. He now entered the party into big crisis as we go for 2019 general elections. But the only saviour is that Mr President is on safe bath.

Do you think Mr President is doing something to resolve these problems?

Mr President is a person that believes sincerely that the party leadership should be capable enough to handle the matters of the party. He doesn’t want to be accused of interfering in the running of the party. Things can still be resolved, there is a window for substitution. After submission, going by the Electoral Act, there is a window for substitution.

The state chapter of your party before now has been in court. Do you see this development leading to possibly aggrieved members going back to court?

Personally, I will go to court if my matter is not resolved. I have followed the democratic process and rules set out by the party. I followed the process by buying forms, getting into the election, appealed our grievances. That is internal mechanisms of the party. So, what is the other democratic handgun that I have, it is the court. I am going to go to court if at the end of today my name is not submitted and some of those that we built the party with over the years that were trying to be shortchanged, then we head for the courts; but we would not allow our supporters to resort to violence.

There are accusations that you and some members have sympathy for the Enugu State governor. Is this true?

We have a governor who is friendly with almost everybody in the state. I’m not the only one he is friendly with. Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is friendly with everybody in the state. He has no boundaries. The road he awarded in my town, he told the Minister of Foreign Affairs to nominate the contractor. The Juliet Ibekaku they imposed on us, he has been very kind to her. He granted her request for an autonomous community in her village. My relationship with the governor is based on three matters. One of my agenda is to revert to Enugu coal, which Mr President agrees with me and when it was becoming difficult, I was advised to meet with the governor to do a letter to Mr President. He did that. Then there was a bid for water scheme for one per geopolitical zone and my friend happened to be the Minister of Water Resources and when I met him, he said if your governor would do this and that. I had to meet the governor to get that and then he is a beneficiary of the $15 million scheme. Will I because I’m in APC deny my people such project. When people talk about this; I remind them that in 1981, 39 years ago, as a student at University of Nigeria, we were in the NPP students wing. We were mobilized to go to Nanka to protest the award of a road by the late Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme of blessed memory. The then agitation was that it was a state road and Federal Government should not do it. So, we as students went there to protest. So, if I protested and that road wasn’t completed and I knew the consequences of stopping that road, 39 years after, if I find that there is a cassava farm between the governor and the anchor…programme that I’m doing for my state I will gladly do it. Will I because I am in APC not talk to the governor of the state again? Four programmes – the Enugu water scheme, revamping of Enugu coal, the cassava plant, integrated farm and the rice farm that would be located at Aninri where Ekweremadu comes from, these are four programmes. I cannot do any of them without a liaison with the Enugu State government.

Don’t you think that mishandling the fallout of APC primaries may take a toll on your party in the general election?

No, it won’t take a toll because the president is popular and has a strong reason he should be re-elected. In the East, we have enough reasons to vote for him next year. For instance, we are chasing the Eastern corridor rail line that would pass from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri and Mr President in a meeting had agreed that it must be done. He said it was going to pass through Enugu, it’s going to get to Abakiliki, Awka, Owerri; it’s going to get to Maiduguri. It is covering 18 states. Before December it will have traction. The Enugu coal before December from all indications will have traction. The water scheme would soon be advertised, that is the 50 million Enugu Water Scheme.

Are you recanting your comments that Southeast support of Atiku and Obi is tantamount to boarding a one-chance bus?

I insist on that. I am telling my Igbo people that the Economic philosophy of a hardworking group, an industrial group is how do we get infrastructure, critical infrastructure and that is what the 5,000 kilometers of federal roads Mr President has in his plan in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP). The 5,000 kilometers of standard gauge rail line, not the old gauge; experiment is between Lagos and Ibadan that would soon be completed. Additional 5,000 megawatts of electricity, 3,000 has started with the Mambila project and by the time it is completed, it’s going to produce 3,000 megawatts. If we get the Enugu coal, it is designed to produce 1,000 megawatts. Then they makeup the 5,000 additional megawatts Mr President is pursuing from renewable energy. These projects can’t finish in 2019, but if you re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari, before 2023, it’s finished. Do you know that Mr President has a gas plan in Igbo land and other parts of the country, whereby industrial groups can hook up gas directly so that the cost of production process in Nigeria would be very low. His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, I have tremendous respect for him. I also have great respect for our brother, His Excellency Mr Peter Obi. I was in school with him, very close, but what I am saying is that what they are bringing to the table is a one-chance bus. Atiku said he would restructure in six months, I said it’s not possible, that is a one-chance bus.

Sports / AITEO Cup Finals: Gov Ugwuanyi Seeks Prayers, Support For Enugu Rangers FC by Babygiwa(f): 5:01pm On Oct 21, 2018

As the Enugu Rangers International Football Club battles Kano Pillars of Kano State in this year’s NFF/AITEO Federation Cup finals in Asaba, Delta State capital on Wednesday, October 24, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has called on all enthusiastic fans of Rangers and indeed the Igbo nation, to offer special prayers for the club’s victory at the tournament.

Gov. Ugwuanyi also appealed to residents of Enugu State and the entire South East geo-political zone, including traders in Onitsha, Enugu, Aba, Asaba, and others, to come out en masse at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, to cheer the Flying Antelopes to victory.

The governor noted that Enugu Rangers is not just an iconic football club, but also a national brand and one of the oldest clubs in Nigeria that has remained in the competition, and has equally continued to receive the admiration of its staunch supporters across the country, stressing that “Rangers FC belongs to all of us”.

Gov. Ugwuanyi pointed out that it was because of God’s grace and the people’s unceasing prayers, goodwill and support that Enugu Rangers FC, under his administration, won the 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) trophy after 32 years, stating that the club’s victory next Wednesday will be another milestone achievement.

He therefore, charged the club’s management, technical crew and players to tackle the game with all sense of commitment and dedication so that they will win the trophy which has eluded the team in the past two decades, saying: “As you go out there, remember what Enugu Rangers represent and do us proud. Enugu State is in the hands of God!”. #amokelouis

Politics / Peter Obi An Iconic Son Of Igboland - Gov. Ugwuanyi by Babygiwa(f): 6:31pm On Oct 19, 2018
*My VP candidacy about Ndigbo, Nigerians, not me, says Obi

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Friday played host to the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Peter Obi, describing him as an iconic son of Igboland, who has distinguished himself creditably in private and public dealings as a successful businessman and two-term former Governor of Anambra State.

Governor Ugwuanyi, who described the PDP Vice Presidential Candidate as a formidable and trusted party man, warmly welcomed him and his entourage to the Government House, Enugu.

The governor noted that Enugu is a PDP state and appreciated the people of the state for the massive support they gave the party in 2015, expressing confidence that with their endorsement, the 2019 election will also end in praise.

He therefore, used the opportunity to congratulate the entire PDP family on the party’s “very successful and peaceful convention in Port Harcourt”.

Earlier in his speech, Mr. Obi told the governor that he was at the Government House to consult him and seek the usual support of the state, stressing that his candidacy was not about him “as Peter Obi” but the people of the Igbo nation and Nigerians at large.

The PDP Vice Presidential candidate, who was accorded a warm reception at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, by the state government delegation and other teeming supporters of the PDP led by the party’s Chairman, Hon. Augustine Nnamani and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Festus Uzor, expressed delight that “this is the first time in my political life that I am welcomed at the airport”.

While applauding Gov. Ugwuanyi for his giant development strides in Enugu State, Obi pointed out that the success of his nomination depends on the leaders of the South East geo-political zone, pledging to bring meaningful development to the zone such as the Enugu – Onitsha expressway, when elected into office.

His words: “So for me this nomination is about our own area. We can’t continue to say we are not getting this or that or that we are marginalized. These are some of the opportunities to re-address whatever we think is not in our positions.

“I have served as governor, so people know a bit of my record. I am here to say to you (Ugwuanyi), I remain one of you. Everybody knows that I believe in Enugu. I believe this is our capital and it remains so.

“Your Excellency, that is why I am here. I need your support and that of all of you. I assure that it is all about us and Nigerians, not about Peter Obi”.

The Vice Presidential candidate later visited the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, who welcomed him and noted how “extremely happy” he was to have him in audience at his residence in Enugu.

Chief Nwodo said that “as a party, the PDP has responded to our yearnings and aspirations by reacting to our feeling of marginalization at the top echelon of our leadership of our great country by nominating you to vie for the position of the Vice President of Nigeria”.

The President General disclosed that the Apex Igbo body will “very soon convene a meeting of the highest organ of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Ime Obi when all the political parties are to bring out their candidates and we will take a decision on what direction Igbos will take in the next election”.

He extolled the leadership qualities of Obi saying that “your nomination is enchanting, your public conduct while you were a governor exemplifies you as a man of outstanding humility”, adding: “Your incorruptibility in government speaks volume. I look forward to when Ohanaeze will take a decision on which party the Igbos will vote for and I wish it will be you”.

Politics / Ugwuanyi Has Changed Our Narrative, Says Skill Acquisition Beneficiaries by Babygiwa(f): 6:20pm On Oct 17, 2018

…Pay thank you visit to gov

Beneficiaries of the Skill Acquisition programme of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on Wednesday paid a ‘Thank You’ visit to the governor at the Government House for transforming their lives for better.

The jubilant beneficiaries, were among the 750 trainees, who are now chief executives of their various businesses, after they were assisted with N100,000 seed money each by the state government early this year, upon attending a one-year free vocational training in focal areas such as Tailoring, Hairdressing, Haircut and Aluminum works apprenticeship.

Converging on the Government House Enugu, the empowered residents of the state, among who are non-indigenes, said “we have come to say thank you for putting smiles on our faces”.

The self-employed beneficiaries stated that they “have shaken off the cloak of despondency and dependency” through the governor’s empowerment programme, expressing joy that “we have been transformed into the prestigious ranks of chief executives of various businesses and viable money making establishments”.

They disclosed that prior to the programme, most of them “were merely marking time, depending dangerously on our parents, older siblings and neighbours for money to buy things as minor as soap to take our baths”, saying that today, they have not only been empowered by Gov. Ugwuanyi’s generosity, but most of them have become employers of labour”.

Speaking, one of the beneficiaries, Tochi Aboh, disclosed that “as I speak, two formerly unemployed indigenes of Enugu State are busy attending to customers in my shop”.

According to her, “instead of begging for money to sustain myself, some of my friends who did not have the fortune of benefitting from the widely celebrated Gburugburu generosity, now pass through my shop to ask for transport money to scout for employment”.

They therefore, prayed for Gov. Ugwuanyi and unanimously pledged to rally support for the governor’s re-election in 2019 and his political ambition beyond 2023 “so as to be able to touch more lives the way you touched ours”.

Responding, Gov. Ugwuanyi, who welcomed the elated beneficiaries to the Government House, told them that “it is God that has done this favour to you”.

While expressing delight that their narrative has changed for good, the governor assured them that more people will be empowered, stressing that the visit has motivated his administration to do more.

He therefore, urged them to continue to pray for the success of his administration for the people to enjoy more democracy dividends. #amokelouis

Politics / How Governor Ayade Transformed A Community In 72 Hours by Babygiwa(f): 12:11pm On Oct 16, 2018
10,000 PEOPLE STAND TO BENEFIT FROM 72 HOURS PHC MAKE OVER IN PHC ITO ODUKPANI, LOCATED IN BOUNDARY COMMUNITY WITH ABIA

“ITS POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE IN NIGERIA IF WE FIX ONE PRIMARY HEALTH CENTER EVERY 72HRS”

The roof was falling off the Ito health Centre in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State both inside and out. The counseling room where women came to discuss family planning, with its mismatched furniture, lacked privacy. Everything was wrong about the facility.

Ito is a large community surrounded by Atan Onoyom village of Eniong Abatim and shares common boundary with Arochukwu village in Abia State.

The only health facility serving over 10,000 people including Arochukwu residents is the delipadated Health Centre at Ito Clan with old fallen roof,  no windows and doors. It was so bad that the community lost confidence and usage by the community was almost zero.

But months after the launch of a a 72-hour PHC makeover challenge led by the Director General of Cross River State Primary Healthcare  Development Agency, Dr Betta Edu, the facility was picked from many entry as the worse in Odukpani.

the facility is now wearing a new look and people can access healthcare services. Since the challenge is mainly done by community volunteers, more than 40 youths volunteers were engaged to help revamp the facility.

"The transformation has been incredible,” says Clan Head of Ito, His Royal Highness Edet O.  Ebita during the courtesy call by the DG, Dr Betta Edu to inform him of the extent of job done so far in the facility.

According  to him, the environment now is more appealing with some equipment and new staff posted. I am joyous that women, children and everyone in the community will now get the proper health care they need, words are not enough to thank Ayade... we will support him all the way.

Speaking, DG CRSPHCDA,  Dr Betta Edu said 72-hour PHC makeover challenge was designed to repair that trust and help communities access health care. We mobilized communities and providers to work together to fix what’s wrong. The makeover itself may be quick, but months of planning and preparation goes into determining what needs fixing and how it will be accomplished. Together, we determine what the clinic needs and developed a plan to make the changes. We did it in 72hrs!!!!!!!

The makeover itself began on Friday morning and will end on Monday. Workers on ground were seen painting and tiling while some were putting final touches to the roof and other physical improvements.

Even the DG, Dr Betta Edu and some media personnels who were on ground joined the community volunteers to put final touches to the building. Some painted, some help in tiling while some were fixing the nets in the windows.

The Community women cooked food for the workers or scrub the windows or whatever else is needed as their contribution.

On Monday, the facility reopens with a celebration and a whole new look and feel. And everyone from the service providers to the community members, to the patients feel a sense of pride and ownership in the finished product.

“The 72-hour PHC makeover improves the working conditions of the service provider while also improving the experience of clients that visit the facility.

The duo made the commendations in their separate speeches during the ground breaking of 100 Housing Units for Nigerian workers by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) in collaboration with Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress Nigeria (TUC), and Nigeria Employer’s Consultative Association (NECA), held at Ede-Oballa, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Speaking at the epoch making event, the TUC National President stated that his leadership was proud of Gov. Ugwuanyi for not only paying workers’ salaries regularly but also for ensuring that they “have decent working environment”.

Comrade Kaigama, who disclosed that Gov. Ugwuanyi is second to none in the provision of workers’ welfare in the South East geo-political zone, added that the governor has set the pace for other states to emulate.

Describing Gov. Ugwuanyi as “a performer”, the labour leader told the governor that “Enugu State is working under your leadership and that is not only because you are a performer, but you exhibit the sense of performance with humility”.

He maintained that the governor is “very humble and caring” and listens when it comes to challenges confronting the workers and the entire people of Enugu, saying: “If there is any governor that Nigerian workers can come up and work for his success particularly for his second term, we are proud to say that our members will work for you”.

According to him, “we would say it anywhere because you have done it and you are doing it. We assure that the working class not only in Enugu State but also in the entire nation is supporting you on your efforts to deliver the dividends of democracy”.

Appreciating Gov. Ugwuanyi for his efforts to give succor to the state workforce through provision of affordable accommodation, the TUC President urged Enugu workers to “reciprocate this gesture by ensuring that we continue to have a harmonious working relationship with your good government”.

In his remark, the labour and employment minister, who described Ugwuanyi as “a governor who is paying workers’ salaries as at when due”, expressed delight at the massive infrastructural development in Enugu State, saying: “Thanks to the Gburugburu magic”.

Dr. Ngige lauded the initiative of the FMBN in partnership with the state government and other concerned bodies to provide affordable housings for the workers as a welcome development, pointing out that the project is in line with tripartite policy of the federal government.

Other speakers at the event such as the Managing Director of FMBN, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the Director General of NECA, Olusegun Oshinowo, and the Managing Director of Multidev Nigeria Ltd, Rev. Ugochukwu Chime, also applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for promptly facilitating the provision of land for the project and ensuring its cost reduction, which they said make the houses more affordable for the state’s civil servants.

In his address, Gov. Ugwuanyi, who welcomed the dignitaries to the state, stated that the project was in line with his administration’s promise to transform the socio-economic fortunes of the state and “to deploy government resources and services to create fair and equal opportunity for every willing citizen to make a living, create wealth and enjoy life in a peaceful and secure environment”.

The governor added that “it also underscores our commitment to improving the welfare of the workers of Enugu State and to the provision of affordable housing for all citizens of the state”.

He emphasized that the programme is a further testimony to the usefulness of synergy and cooperation between government, public institutions and the organized labour in the quest to improve the living standard of the people through rapid development of all sectors of the state’s economy.

While thanking the FMBN for choosing Enugu State particularly Nsukka as one of the locations for the project, Gov. Ugwuanyi noted that the initiative was a welcome complement to the other efforts of his administration in developing the University town of Nsukka – “the second largest urban area in Enugu State and a University town founded over half a century ago”. #amokelouis

Campaign Billboard of Governor Ugwuanyi and “Jesus” – Our Position

Our attention has been drawn to a makeshift relief art work of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Governor of Enugu State, which has an image, purportedly of ‘Jesus’ on it and erected on strategic locations in Enugu city by one of the governor’s teeming supporters, ostensibly to add his weight in the massive approval for his re-election.

We sincerely appreciate the genuine intentions of the initiator of the said art work, who in all calculations were his measure to demonstrate his love for the governor. While it is important to state that the maker of the said work did it without our consent, we have however been able to draw his attention to the uproar already generated by his innocent intentions. He seemingly appreciates the concern this has caused to the public vis-à-vis the apparent varied interpretations and has even gone as far as removing same!

Consequently, we, hereby appeal to all those who may intend to erect such works on behalf of His Excellency or engage in similar acts to kindly obtain proper guidance in that regard from the Campaign office.
