Politics / How Umahi, Masari, Ugwuanyi, Okowa, Ishaku Are Transforming Lives by Babygiwa(f): 10:44am On Nov 18, 2018
…creating jobs for youths, women

•Govs to be honoured at SME SUMMIT AND AWARDS 2018

Many stakeholders, including Governors Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Aminu Masari (Katsina), Ifeanyi Ugwanyi (Enugu), Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) and Darius Ishaku (Taraba), are using small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to give succour to the army of unemployed youths and women in their states

Governor Umahi

They are creating jobs not only to boost their states’ respective economies but also providing the atmosphere for businesses to thrive. The governors seem to be working out of the conviction that SMEs are the engine of economic growth. The expert opinion that SMEs provide the shortest route to economic prosperity sounds true in many countries, especially the advanced countries, where SMEs have been used to build strong and sustainable economies. For instance, SMEs in Canada are seen as the lifeblood of Canada’s economy.

There are over 1.1 million SMEs in the North American country constituting more than 99 per cent of Canadian business and employing more than 90 per cent of workers in the private sector. Promoting SMEs’ capacity and growth is essential for the future health of the Canadian economy. The situation is not different in the US as majority of the firms in the economy are not big multinational corporations but SMEs defined as businesses employing up to 500 workers

Governor Masari

Generally, small and medium-sized businesses are important for job creation and innovation. Although things have not been particularly rosy for the SMEs operating in Nigeria as it is in advanced economies, many stakeholders recognize them as the engine of economic growth. Our SMEs operate in a hostile environment and the challenges they face include poor infrastructure and lack of access to funds.

Across the country, the cost of doing business is high because infrastructural facilities like electricity and goods roads that ordinarily should be taken for granted are lacking. Business owners reel under exorbitant and multiple levies and taxes imposed by different tiers of government.

But the journey to setting our SMEs on a sound footing began with the establishment of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development of Nigeria (SMEDAN). Established under the SMEDAN Act 2003, the mandate is to stimulate, monitor and coordinate the development of the micro, small and medium enterprises, MSMEs, sub-sector in Nigeria. It initiates and articulates policy ideas for SMEs growth and development in the country.

Governor Ishaku

Meanwhile, the Buhari administration, analysts say, has done more than any other administration in the history of Nigeria to move the SME sector forward. For instance, the Economic Management Team, headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has been in the forefront of moving the economy out of the doldrums especially with the inauguration of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (EPGP) using SMEs as the peg. The result is that Nigeria has moved up in the global ranking of the ease of doing business while foreign investors are said to now consider the country as a business destination.

In a nutshell, things appear to be looking up. Beyond the efforts of the Federal Administration, state governments have been engaged in all sorts of initiatives aimed at creating an atmosphere for businesses to thrive.

That is not all. The latest initiative to reposition our SMEs is designed to showcase the giant strides of SMEs operators in the face of the odds, promote excellence among the operators and recognise stakeholders who have helped to advance the cause of the sector. Driven by Lakewhyte Communications and significantly endorsed by SMEDAN, the Nigeria SME Summit and Awards 2018 is designed to showcase the giant strides of SMEs operators in the face of the odds, promote excellence among the operators and recognise stakeholders who have helped to advance the cause of the sector. It also promises to be a platform to brainstorm on the challenges inherent in the sector and point the way forward.

Governor Ugwuanyi

The ceremony, according to the organisers, is scheduled to hold on November 29, 2018 in Abuja.

The organisers pointed out that the event is to retune our SMEs in such a way that they act as the engine of economic growth and thus help to take Nigeria out of the cesspit. Apart from the SMEDAN endorsement of the project, Vice President Osinbajo is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour.

The choice of the VP to play the role at the Nigeria SME Summit and Awards 2018 is understandable, given the huge attention MSMEs have been getting from the Buhari administration through his headship of the EMT.

Of particular interest is the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) under which Osinbajo, in collaboration with the Bank of Industry, has been reaching out to micro enterprises with funds.

Governor Okowa

Significantly, five governors who have been adjudged as standing out of the pack in their pro-SME schemes will be honoured at the event.

Umahi, Masari, Ugwuanyi, Okowa and Ishaku, among others, will receive awards for being SME-friendly.

“The Awards Committee of the SME Summit and Awards 2018 has found Govs Umahi (Ebonyi), Masari (Katsina), Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okowa (Delta) and Ishaku (Taraba) worthy to receive awards for their pro-SME activities”, the organisers’ statement said.

Sports / Enugu Govt. Honours AITEO Cup Champions by Babygiwa(f): 6:58pm On Nov 17, 2018
Gov. Ugwuanyi has restored Rangers’ dignity - Senator Jim Nwobodo

The former Governor of old Anambra State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Jim Nwobodo, has applauded Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for his commitment and contributions to the remarkable feats recorded by the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu, in lifting the 2015/2016 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) trophy and 2018 AITEO Cup after 32 years and 35 years, respectively.

Senator Nwobodo, who narrated how he became Governor of old Anambra State through his passion and support for Enugu Rangers, expressed delight that after 32 years the club did not win a trophy, “Gov. Ugwuanyi whose name is also Ifeanyi” came in and opened the door of victory for the club.

Speaking at the grand reception for the 2018 AITEO Cup Champions, the former governor described the club’s recent feat as “the miracle of Asaba” made possible because Gov. Ugwuanyi’s entrustment of Enugu State into the hands of God.

He said that football is a unifying factor for all segments of the society and stressed that Rangers’ outstanding performance under Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration has united everybody in the state, saying: “I am here because of Rangers and Gov. Ugwuanyi”.

Describing Gov. Ugwuanyi as his “junior brother”, Senator Nwobodo stated that he was happy with his style of leadership and commitment to God, maintaining that the AITEO cup won by Flying Antelopes in Asaba was a miracle and “only God performs Miracle not Satan”. He therefore congratulated the new Champions for doing the state proud.

In his address, Gov. Ugwuanyi, who dedicated the trophy to God, stated that the event was “in thanksgiving and praise to the merciful Lord for yet another prayer that He has answered and for all that He has been doing for us in Enugu State”.

According to him, “for 35 years, the club had labored in vain for victory in the National Football Challenge Cup having won its last trophy in the competition in 1983. Again, by the special grace of God, that jinx was however broken on the 24th of October, 2018 when, in what is now popularly referred to as the “Miracle of Asaba”, the club came back from a 0-3 deficit to defeat the Kano Pillars Football Club and win this year’s edition of the competition now known as the AITEO Cup”.

The governor, who disclosed that he was “profoundly grateful and humbled” that the remarkable achievements were happening under his watch as Governor of Enugu state, also expressed gratitude to the management, coaching crew and players of the club for their sacrifices, hard work and commitment.

He equally thanked all stakeholders and teeming supporters of Rangers across the country and beyond, including the people of Enugu State, for their fervent and unceasing prayers “for this day of glory as well as the overall success of our administration”.

Gov. Ugwuanyi further stated that his administration has resolved to restore the legacy of Enugu State as a centre of sports excellence and breeding ground for sporting talents in the country, noting that “as a government, we have always believed that sports offers tremendous opportunities for economic growth, empowerment, employment generation, poverty alleviation as well as progressive youth and social development”.

He therefore, reassured Rangers' fans and the people of the state of his administration’s unwavering support and assistance to the club as it continues to pursue both national and international glory next season.

Another climax of the colourful event was the unveiling of the trophy to the public by former players of the club led by Emma Okala.

Politics / The Ugly Situation APC Is Trying To Hide’ by Babygiwa(f): 3:01pm On Nov 17, 2018
So I spent the whole of yesterday night listening to the so called Saraki Audio as released by the APC propaganda machinery. The first thing that struck me was the source of the video. One Kayode Ogundamisi a renowned OPC members that supervised the killing of more than five thousand Hausas in Lagos but still walking freely!
Instead of diverting the attention of the polity with this video. The APC should tell us where Yemi Osinbajo an acclaimed pastor and his minions at NEMA kept the money they stole and why they had to award contracts without following due process. Can we also know why NEMA under the supervision of Osinbajo failed to distribute 160,000 bags of rice donated to Nigeria by China but left to rot away in NEMA warehouse!
Can we also know why Oshiomole sold Sheu Sanni's ticket for two million dollars through Hadiza Bala Usman. And for Hadiza, I have read her rejoinder to Saharareporters.com and I laughed. This is the same woman that has destroyed the nation's port and maritime industry.
As a Northerner, I advised that the Change government run an issue based campaign. We should ask ourselves why Polio had to come back to the North after we've won the battle. What has Buhari done for the North in the area of Education and Healthcare??

Buhari is our problem not Saraki! My dear Northerners please share until it gets to Buhari

Politics / 2019: Don’t Involve Us In Your Propaganda, Enugu Workers, Traders Tell Ayogu Eze by Babygiwa(f): 5:59pm On Nov 16, 2018
…Deny being coerced to submit PVC details

…Say they had endorsed Ugwuanyi’s reelection

Workers and Traders in Enugu State have described as false, baseless and mischievous, the allegation by factional governorship candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, Senator Ayogu Eze, that the PDP was coercing them into submitting details of their Permanent Voters’ Cards, PVCs..

Sen. Eze, through his spokesman, Barr. Steve Oruruo, had while prematurely denying the allegations of gross embezzlement of public funds meant for road contracts, when he was Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, in a failed attempt to divert attention, alleged that “the Enugu workers and traders are being compelled to surrender the particulars of their PVC”.

But in a swift reaction, the two bodies denied knowledge of such allegation and warned Senator Ayogu and his faction not to use the names of the state’s workers and traders to play senseless and devious politics.

They stated that they had earlier endorsed the PDP governorship candidate in Enugu State, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for a second term in office, wondering what could have informed the unfounded and baseless idea of coercing them into submitting details of their PVCs.

Reacting further, on behalf of the workers, the state chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria, Comrade Igbokwe Chukwuma Igbokwe, said the accusation does not hold water and should be disregarded.

His words: “Not to the best of my knowledge, there is no medium through which that has happened; to my knowledge, no worker has reported such to me that he is being forced to release any details, and I have not had any meeting or conveyance of any such meeting.

“As far as I am concerned, there is no circular to that effect, directing or instructing workers to do such. I am not aware and I can tell you no single worker has brought such complain to me as their leader.”

Describing it further as “laughable,” he said “no government takes such decision, it will communicate it through a circular and it will come from the office of the Head of Service and as far as I am concerned, we have not seen a copy of such circular.

“The issue of forcing workers to submit details of PVC for salary, no government can do that as far as Enugu State is concerned. We will have been the first to come out publicly and challenge it. Workers’ PVCs are personal to them. So, there is nothing like that as far as the workers of Enugu State are concerned. Anybody making such claims should come and prove it.”

On the part of the traders, the President-General of the Enugu State Amalgamated Traders’ Association, Mr. Temple Udeh, who spoke to newsmen, accompanied by other executives representing the three senatorial zones of the state, described the allegation as unfounded, baseless and a diversionary measure adopted by Eze’s camp to downplay the burning issue at the moment (EFCC petition)

He said in a reaction that “we were shocked to hear the false allegation that our members are being forced to surrender their PVC details. We want to say that it is a lie from the pit of hell. There is no iota of truth in it. They don’t know what they are saying; they should not subject traders to their politics of lies.

“Even the traders’ grant, courtesy of the Enugu State Government, which has positively affected the lives of traders in the State, there is no condition attached. We have about 100 beneficiaries every month, who win N50,000 each to grow their businesses, and it has been on for the past 3 years, and nobody has been asked to even show evidence of having a PVC.

“You would remember that before now, last year, the traders came together and unanimously endorsed the governor for a second term in office; did he demand for our PVCs before we endorsed him? We endorsed him because of his good works.

“So, this is a lie of the century. Nobody has ever asked us of PVC. We are just hearing this for the first time. Do we even have a polling booth in the market? So, how are you going to do the maneuvering, let them go and do campaign and win voters not cheap political ideas”.

Politics / Archbishop Chukwuma Hails Ugwuanyi’s Commitment To Children’s Welfare by Babygiwa(f): 6:23pm On Oct 31, 2018

The Archbishop of the Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma has commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for signing the Child Rights Bill into law, which he said has guaranteed the rights and welfare of children in the state. The Archbishop, who is also the Chairman, Enugu State Adoption Committee, stated that the governor’s disposition in ensuring that all illegal adoption of children are completely stamped out in the state, is commendable and worthy of emulation.

The cleric spoke during the “Sensitization Workshop for Stakeholders on Adoption and Adoption Process in Enugu State”, held in Enugu, yesterday.

He expressed delight that Gov. Ugwuanyi has provided the enabling environment for the committee to discharge its duties, stressing that “based on the magnanimity of His Excellency, this committee has ensured that baby factories where babies are harvested for rituals do not exist in Enugu state”.

The committee chairman added that the governor has assisted the state in the area of protection of the children through the engagement of social welfare workers, training of the staff and supporting them in partnering with some doctors and hospitals to ensure that the rights of children are protected.

He said that the enlightenment workshop was aimed at educating the people on the dangers of baby factories or illegal adoption and urged the society to support the committee in upholding the salvation of children.

Declaring the workshop open, Governor Ugwuanyi emphasized the importance of children in the society, pointing out that “the Bible in Psalm 127 verse 3, describes children as a heritage from God and as His gifts to mankind”. He added that it “is the obligation on the society to treat children as precious divine presents, to be loved and cared for by all”.

Represented by his deputy, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, Gov. Ugwuanyi noted that the delicate and sensitive nature of children have necessitated most countries including Nigeria to make laws and rules “to ensure that adoption and fostering are not abused or used in such a manner that would be detrimental to the wellbeing of the affected children”.

He disclosed that his administration has continued to take measures towards protecting the rights and welfare of the children in the state, such as prompt constitution of the committee on child fostering and adoption, the enactment of the child rights act in 2016 as well as the establishment of 12 family courts by the state’s Chief Judge, among others.

The governor therefore applauded “the State Ministry of Gender Affairs and Social Development, the State Judiciary and other relevant agencies of government stakeholders, participants, facilitator, and all who played a role in the organization of the workshop” for the initiative.

Earlier in her opening address, the Commissioner for Gender Affairs, Princess Peace Nnaji, maintained that the establishment of the Adoption Committee by Governor Ugwuanyi has distinguished him as “a dynamic leader that cares for the welfare of children”.

She said that the workshop also provides an ample opportunity for the stakeholders and the general public to know what adoption was all about, and the adoption process in Enugu state with a view to getting it right for the overall interest of the children in particular and society in general.

Describing legal adoption as “a permanent placement of a child into a fit and proper home through the court of law, the gender affairs commissioner, further explained that it “needs multi-sectoral approach”, which requires the inputs of her ministry, court of law, public spirited individuals, religious organizations, among others.

The Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Ngozi Emehelu, in her address enlightened the people on the roles of the judiciary in the dispensation of justice and lauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for according the judiciary its rightful place in the scheme of things, assuring their unflinching commitment towards rendering quality services to the state.

2019: Ohanaeze Ndigbo validates endorsements for Ugwuanyi

The Enugu State chapter of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo on Saturday validated the gale of endorsements for the re-election of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in 2019 by various groups across the state and beyond.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization said that “this validation of endorsements by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo is an ultimate Seal of Authority in Igbo Land”.

Presenting the organization’s stance, during its rich and colourful Iri-Ji Festival held at Michael Okapra Square, Enugu, the President of the state chapter, Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, added that the validation was also “the most bankable promissory note that beckons on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a Certificate of Return to His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Lawrence Ugwuanyi as the governor-elect in Enugu State come 2019”.

The body explained that their decision was also based on the list of numerous groups in the state that have endorsed the governor for a second term in office such as “the traditional rulers council and the members of their cabinets; Association of former elected Local Government Chairmen; Enugu State Amalgamated Traders Association; Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN); National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS).

Others, according to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, include, “NULGE/ LG Pensioners; NURTW; National Assembly members; Enugu State Resident Doctors Association; Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT); Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC); Association of Former Members of Enugu State House of Assembly; Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), etc”.

Speaking further, the chapter’s President applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi’s “steady trajectory of massive infrastructural developments” which he said has “turned Enugu State into a huge and seamless construction site with all the tiers of government, namely the federal, state and the local at work in project implementation synergy”.

According to him, “the above observations by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Enugu State Chapter, are reinforced by the clamour for endorsements of Governor Ugwuanyi for his re-election as the governor of Enugu State in the 2019 general election.

“Well over 100 groups have endorsed Governor Ugwuanyi to run for a second term. The list of such groups above is a tip of the iceberg”.

In his remark, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, who witnessed the historic occasion with Gov. Ugwuanyi and other dignitaries, noted that the validation by the Enugu State chapter of the organization was an outward demonstration of solidarity for the governor, saying that “you (Ugwuanyi) are such a humble man that I don’t know how low you can get again in order to show more humility”.

His words: “Well I cannot say anything rather than that I have noted with great satisfaction what the people of Enugu State have said today. And when I summon the next meeting of Ime-Obi Ohanaeze, which is the highest decision making organ in Igboland, we will take into consideration what was said today because Ohanaeze must look at all our governors and their respective states and say our opinions as to who has been doing well. On this note, I say congratulations to you, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as we invite you to come and appreciate what we are doing today”.

Responding, Gov. Ugwuanyi who was honoured as the “Ezeudo Enugu State” alongside other awardees, such as Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Chief Sunday Nwobodo and Chief (Dr.) Joel Ugwoke, thanked the Ohanaeze Ndigbo for the cultural event and for honoring sons and daughters of the state.

He also expressed gratitude to God for the peace, security and development in Enugu State, appreciating the apex Igbo body for their solidarity, goodwill and support. #amokelouis
