Jobs/VacanciesWhy You Should Use Good Humor During Interviews by bakingsoda(op): 4:06pm On Aug 03, 2015
As a job seeker, you must have read several articles on how to excel at interviews, or let's water it down, how to land a job. Your research must have seen you perusing several CV layouts, how to answer interview questions, how to dress to interviews and even how to speak.

In recent times, the myth of having a particular type of CV has been debunked by several career experts. All that matters is the content and presentation. Likewise, the dreaded interview session is gradually being simplified and shifted away from the sober and serious session it had to be.

The job seeker always sees interviews as an opportunity to display how serious minded, hardly distracted and business ready he is to his prospective employer. But, one thing job seekers fail to realise is that the business environment has really changed in recent times and employers are also searching outside the box for an individual that can get the job done and not just an overqualifed, moderately qualified, qualified or under qualified robot. What sells is no longer the content of your CV, but your person, as vast numbers of more qualified candidates are there. If your CV says your are qualified, you get invited for an interview. The essence of the interview is to match your person to the content of your CV, or better, to give your CV a voice.

This is also where using humor during an interview comes in. When asked to talk about yourself don't just recite the content of your CV or expel some memorised lines. What your employer expects of you is to communicate in a relaxed manner with vivid scenarios of how you as a person can move their organisation forward.

Your behaviour, language, facial expression and gestures tell the prospective employer more than what you are actually saying. You don't have to sit and talk in a serious tone before you show your interviewer that you are qualified, you might even pass a wrong message with this posture; you might indirectly be telling your employer that you are a frustrated job seeker that would say anything to be employed.

What I am saying in essence is that for your next job interview be yourself, be lively and relaxed.

Do you have an interview session coming up in the next couple of days, contact us for a free mock interview session. To your success, cheers!!

Jobs/VacanciesGet Your Dream Job, Despite The Odds (copied) by bakingsoda(op): 1:15pm On Jun 29, 2015
Let's cut right to the chase: not everyone has the talent to pursue their dream job. You may aspire to be an opera singer, but if dogs hide under beds when you sing, that career probably isn't going to work out for you.

There's just one problem with this pessimistic point of view: the longer your time horizon, the less talent matters and the more that grit matters. As you probably know, grit is the single-minded pursuit of a long-term goal.

Can grit overcome a horrific singing voice? No. But grit could get a tone-deaf opera singer a career managing opera companies.

So if you feel that you can't make money pursuing whatever it is that you love, there is a straightforward solution: work harder.

More effort = more success

When people say, "I can't make money as an artist," what they mean is, "I can't make money as an artist unless I work longer and harder than I'm willing to work."

Effort and time can overcome a lack of talent and opportunity. Success takes patience and hard work.

Most people don't want to work as hard as it takes to earn a living at their passion. As a result, they quit without trying.

If you are frustrated because you can't work full time at your passion, the problem may be that you haven't yet worked hard enough to make it work.

The solution isn't to give up, it's to work even longer and harder.

Wait... there is one condition

You might have to be flexible.

Instead of being a famous actor, you might have to spend ten or twenty years acting in local theater groups. Then, you might start getting some TV commercial work, which might lead to a nice role in a web-based comedy.

In other words, if you quit after a few years because your dream didn't come true, understand that you are quitting because it didn't happen fast enough.

You also may have to choose a real job that has enough flexibility to allow you to invest real energy in your dream.

Early in her career, novelist Ann Patchett started out with the thought that she would pick up waitress jobs to earn money, then write in her free time. But she ended up being too exhausted to write anything decent, so she switched strategies and began taking on nonfiction writing assignments for income, which gave her the time and energy to write fiction.

The strategy turned out better than she expected. Here's what she observed:

"In my mind, fiction and nonfiction stayed so far away from each other that for years I would have maintained they had no more a relationship than fiction and waitressing. Writing a novel, even when it’s going smoothly, is hard for me, and writing an article, even a challenging one, is easy... I’ve come to realize that while all those years of writing fiction had improved my craft as a writer across the board, all those years of writing articles … had made me a workhorse, and that, in turn, was a skill I brought back to my novels."

If you have a dream job, pursue it. But understand that you, too, must learn to be a workhorse.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: One Word That Denied Me My First Job Offer In An Interview by bakingsoda: 6:14pm On Jun 23, 2015
Mine was "hello?"

The interviewer asked me a question that I didn't hear clearly. Instead of saying " Pardon or excuse me", I said " hello?". The interviewer was shocked. She was like, did you just say hello? Then went ahead to write on her jotter that I said hello!

As I saw the note, I just lost hope.

Normally the company sends regret or success mail at least two working days after interview, mine was sent the next day. That was how I lost opportunity in one of Bill Gate's funded company.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Ways To Attract An Employer To Your CV by bakingsoda(op): 10:13am On Jun 23, 2015
achinaboy:
can u differentiate the skills from experiences, because am trying to write a cv soon
Skills refer to being able to do something well, e.g. good communication skills, ability to work under pressure, etc while work experience means different job positions you have previously held.
NB: if you do not have any work experience, you can list volunteering, NYSC or any office you held while in school as job experience.
Jobs/VacanciesWays To Attract An Employer To Your CV by bakingsoda(op):
A curriculum vitae (CV) is a written overview of a person's experience and other qualifications. A CV is also called a résumé. A CV does not usually have to follow a strict layout or format, but in order to attract an employer's attention and get invited for an interview, your CV aside having good qualifications and skills stated on it, should contain only relevant information and laid out beautifully on A4 sized plain white paper.

These three (3) tips give an insight into a standard CV.

Tip 1: Make it simple
Avoid unnecessary grammar, too much formatting and inclusion of unnecessary information such as the colour of your eyes, your best food. Such information is only necessary if you are going for a beauty contest or similar events, in which case you would be given a personal history form to fill.

Tip 2: Display more of your skills than your work experience
This is relevant mostly to jobhoppers. Instead of making a list of all your work experiences, you may display two or three of your experiences that are similar to the post you are applying for on the particular CV you are to send to the employer. You may then convert the duties performed at your other jobs (the jobs not displayed on the particular CV) to skills and display them under the skills section of your CV.

The essence of doing this includes but not limited to: not coming across the employer as a job hopper. Some employers view job hopping as a negative career attitude and this may truncate your chance of getting interviewed if the employer in that organisation falls into this category; having a short CV that is filled with information relevant to the job you are applying for, thereby making the employer go through the length of your CV if they like what they see; displaying more skills than work experience on your CV presents you as a versatile individual.

Tip 3: Use a simple layout
I have seen CVs displayed like maps or even worse. A badly designed CV makes it difficult for the employer to go through your CV and this may cause your CV being thrown in the thrash even though the content is rich.
In addition, it is important to go through your CV from time to time; this would assist you in identifying any of your skill areas you may need to improve on.

Do you need assistance with drafting or reviewing your CV? Let us know.

I don't know if someone has ever been in this dilemma before.
A friend of mine just received an interview invite for a Web/Social Media Administrator. He studied Business admin.
Seeing as this post is somewhat more related to computer and web design stuff, the guy is confused. He doesn't know much about web and social media stuff and the job description is kinda intimidating to him.
He's thinking of ignoring the invite but then, its from a big company.
What do you think he can do? Should he forget it or give it a try?
The role has nothing to do with web design. It has more to do with managing the company's online presence, like answering customers' questions on social media, updating the company's page with good contents, etc. A sound graduate of any discipline can handle the role. Use Google for more info on the role.
