Anything oh! At this point any advise would be really helpful. Canada is a weird country, though. Where you decide to settle depends on the kind of job you want. I also hear there is still high unemployment in a lot of areas. Are you in HR? In Toronto? I really don't want to go to 'Winterpeg'!
Hi.
HR is not that difficult to break into.
Step 1. Kite your CV on those websites and see what kind of response you get or how many responses. For instance if you get recruiters scrambling to get your attention you will have the feel you doing the right thing

Step 2. Network with people within that location on LinkedIn

Step dydx Register with the professional body recognised in your location. HRPA is for Ontario. I got admitted into two bodies (Ontario and Alberta) but selected to stick with Ontario because I don't have 1100 CDN to be paying annually for membership fees and not that CPHR is recognised in Ontario. It is not recognised. Mbok, no time to waste money.

I can share personal experience and strategies some1 have engaged so far. Not fully landed but has attended quite a number of interviews via Skype. They all want him to show face to progress to final stage... so he is showing face soon grin. I posted a video on acing interviews. You can review it and adhere to some of the guidelines.

What i can tell you is there is need for HR skill set but competition is high too so you must bring your A game to the table.
What else specifically do you want to know, I may be able to answer one or two.
Cheers

0. Obtain SIN
1. open an account
2. get a phone plan
3. get an accommodation (On the assumption you have a temporary place you laying your head, "Either the head is cute or big"wink tongue tongue tongue

czaratwork:
please for landed/settled members here please arrange in order of priority

1. open an account
2. get an accomodation
3. get a phone plan

it seems these three are interwoven because you will need the address for all others and you will need an account for the other payments and you will also need phone number for the other 2.

thank you

Anyone coming from the UK would be a bit shocked after landing in Canada, some would be very shocked..depends on your level of comfort in the UK.lol

...when i landed, i disliked Canada for the first 6 month or thereabout. Things cost more money here. From banking fees to airline ticket to broadband internet plans e.t.c Transport services in cities wasn't as advanced as the UK, even the kebab do not taste as nice as the ones sold in the UK, no greggs (for some of us that like food). The cheap megabus and national express to everywhere is absent, no virgin bullet trains, Pubs are not so good in Canada..even non existent in some places, TV programs were not interesting... No canadian version of lord sugar, britains got talent, xfactor, deal or no deal, the weakest link, the numerous documentaries on itv, channel 4, bbc e.t.c but they do sometimes show the american versions. The only reason i kept my cable on is cos of kids channels.

With time i adjusted, since i have made up my mind that i am making the country my home. Now i like the country and appreciate the personal space, but i still miss the UK alot of times.
you forgot to mention fashion. angry

The last time my fridge broke down, I had to call a repairmen to fix it. And the bill came to $600.
Last Sunday, my wife informed me that both our whirlpool washing machine and dryer weren't working. The washing machine wasn't draining water whereas the dryer wouldn't start at all. Two weeks earlier, she had noticed the dryer would keep on spinning when its door opens(it supposes to stop spinning when the doors opens).

My wife suggest to call the repair men or to buy new machines. To me it was a BIG NO to both options given that HIGH cost.
Therefore, I decided to fix them by myself. Ispent many hours online searching how to fix both machines. From my search, I discovered that the issue with the washing machine could be either the switch lid or the water pump. As for the dryer, I found out that the issue was the heater element, the fuse and the door switch.

From the Youtube videos I was able to determine which tools I would need to remove the defective parts from both machines. I run to the HomeDepot store to buy the require tools. They basically sell everything at Homedepot, from home appliances to tools to ...

With the new tools bought at HOME DEPOT, I opened my washing machine and removed the switch lid and the water pump. And then I opened the dryer to remove the heating element, the fuse and the door switch. I took all those parts to a local store that sell appliance parts to request new parts of the same model.

I came back home to install the new devices on the machines. The washing machine started to work properly. It turned out that the issue was the lid switch. As for the dryer, it started to turn on but it wouldn't spin. Further search online prompted me to check the belt. I open the dryer to locate the belt and I discovered it was broken. I run back to the local store that sell parts to buy a new belt. After installing the new belt, everything started to work properly. And the dryer would stop spinning when its door open.

I have learned in few days to fix both the washing and dryer. I have saved a lot of $$$$$

Tips: Please learn how to do it yourself. All you need is the internet. Also, make sure you get yourself a tools box.
You simply have earned yourself about 900 Dollars. Good job. Let wifey take you for a treat. cheesy

Sir, I mean ICAS - INTERNATIONAL CREDENTIAL ASSESSMENT SERVICE OF CANADA
Can I advise you?
Please use WES.
That credential assessment is not a one off thing. From my experience you will always need it when you arrive.
You want to join a professional body, they will ask for it. You want to go to school they will ask for WES. You want to school in US, they will ask for WES. I know people who went for this jeko jeko bodies, when they wanted to apply to US schools, they told them they only accept WES (Because WES already has a reputation.) Except you school in Uni Port, WES does not conduct evaluation for them I think because they are not trustworthy in authenticating their certificates.
I don't even revert to my schools for transcript again, I simply log on to WES to send to them. The last time I liaised with my undergrad school for transcript was 6 years ago after I discovered WES. Cheaper and faster to get response.

To avoid double spending in future... Go for WES
Cheers

I started as a FT officer and later added system administrator and ATM custodian to it. After 11/2 yes, I became head teller operations and later proceeded to be a reconciliation officer at the Head office. I am good with nos and analysis. I'm also good at managing people and situations very well. Anything that involves punching nos, I am down with it. I think with these few info, you can help me with the right pointers. Thanks once again.

Hi Czaratwork,

I will appreciate if you send the ACCA to CPA conversion route and no ACCA/ACA to CPA route. My goons need that info. my email is adeballer@gmail.com

Secondly, I think you should target Toronto. The financial market is huge or Calgary. You do not have to live in Toronto. You can live in Brampton or Mississauga.

The poster's first question was very much valid. I don't see anything with asking what city favors a particular field, it helps one narrow the search. The sites you mentioned, indeed etc. also ask for city of preference....so the poster asked a very valid question to help narrow their search.

Hi,
Nigerians should learn how to do their own research and stop relying on people who may give you wrong advice
A simple research on workpolis or indeed.ca will give you the answers you seek.
Another thing you can do is what I call “kiting your CV”. Test run the market and see if your resume gets the attention you seek.

Good News Fellas.
I woke up this morning to see her message
My cousin/client just gave me the good news. "Submit your Passport"
Start to finish was about 45 days.

On the POF, guys try reduce all the plenty stories (via LOE) you give the VO. I guess they make them to start querying what they should not query. I remember last two/three weeks when she came running that they said she should submit another POF within 7 days.
I told her relax. no big deal. Resubmit the old one (To show consistency) and submit a new statement.
She had returned the 2m we credited her to augment her statement, so I simply sent her another 1m to increase the threshold back to to the required level. (And yes, I specifically told her, she doesn't need any letter of explanation. And true to my words, no questions asked.

Cheers Guys

But you can continue to pick to respond to posts that fits your false narratives. Whatever makes you feel good.
You see we are getting somewhere. if you had simply said "A civil engineer will not be taken seriously unless he/she adds canadian education to their resume" That would have been much better than saying he has zero chance of getting a job. Go and Learn from Blackbuddy how to advise people. You really need it. Beyond Nairaland, it will help you in your workplace if you want to go far. So because people have Nigerian qualification it is an hopeless case for them. Mr. Oga, please shift let people see road abeg.

maternal:
lol naija people and God. God,God,God. Stop your false hope. One exception does not make it the norm. It's like a graduate doing very well in naija, then he comes online saying all graduates are doing well. How about the millions of graduates who are unemployed ? Its simply a false statement. I have a cousin and a friend who have a masters degree from the UK and USA. All have officially got their degrees equivalent to a Canadian masters by the government, yet having a "foreign degree" is affecting them. My cousin who just went for a few interview with the government and was told basically his foreign degree was an issue, and he currently has Canadian experience, as he's working for a Canadian company. He got his masters from the UK. Certain jobs people with a US degree can't just come here and start working. That's a US degree, talk less a naija one. Unlike others here, I'm speaking from experience and have experienced the discrimination and the worse this country has to offer. Do you people want me to paint a nice picture of Canada ? Or should I be straight forward and say you'll most likely experience x, so be ready ? I know a few Nigerians in management roles within the government (provincial/federal), and even they said they probably wouldn't call, let alone hire someone with just a naija degree. Canada is a VERY regulated country. It does not play with qualifications/regulations.

You're even contradicting yourself. If a naija degree is worthy here, why should he/she enroll in some "bridging continuous education" ? Because we both know without some sort of Canada education throw into the mix, or in their resume, nobody would take his application seriously. Tell the people the truth and reduce the false hope abeg. With the "right attitude and right frame of mind you can move mountains". So why aren't people staying in naija to move these mountains ? Why are a lot running away ? My friend policy and strategic planning is more important than having the right frame of mind. Please ignore me if you don't like my comment. I'm actually trying to paint a realistic picture of Canada, and helping people avoid making the mistakes I made. Is that a crime ? Anyways sha, this issue we're currently discussing is a major issue and the federal government is trying to tackle. How to integrate foreign credentials into the system.

Wei, for example, believes she has the experience to get hired but it's overlooked because she didn't acquire it in Canada.

Chugh said he's dealing with the same issue.

"I think it's more to do with the culture," he said.

"They're looking for people who have Canadian experience, Canadian degrees."

You can't be this ignorant. It's simply to acquire points or to show if you're eligible to migrate under X visa/status. The gov't saying your degree is equivalent to a BA or masters degree in Canada, DOES NOT force or guarantee an employer to view it the same way.
No Sir. You just showed how ignorant you are.
When I wanted to join the HR profession body of Ontario, all the registrar asked was my WES result and not my certificate. Which i mailed to them (Original) and after citing, the mailed it back to me.
I only decided to respond to your ignorance. WES is not just to acquire some points for CIC evaluation. WES serves as a transcript if you want to apply to schools in Canada and US. You can either go for course by course evaluation or Degree evaluation.
I will advice you to bury your head in shame and keep quiet. Please stop displaying your ignorance in a profound manner.

Blackbuddy:
Hi, Canada's relatively stable economy at this time is the reason for a steady increase in job creation rates and improving work opportunities. With your great education level, you stand a chance to compete favorably once you are willing to do the ground work required to make you stand out. By ground work I mean you should select a good foreign trained professionals assistance agency that will help you understand the local requirements to work and help you with entry into a professional network that can support your integration. Of course this is after you have applied for and received a Canadian permanent resident visa. Nothing is easy but the pay off is worth it especially when you land a nice job. Once you learn how to package your years of working experience and how to conduct your job search efficiently, it's only a matter of time before you get settled. I know a gentleman who landed here and after his professional newcomer training, he made of list of likely employers for his field in engineering and started to cold call on them, that is, to walk into their offices and request to speak with managers there. On one such day, he walked into an office and told the receptionist he's an experienced trained engineer looking for an opportunity to discuss industry trends with senior professionals in this field. She was so impressed, she scheduled a meeting for him with a senior manager. The senior manager met with him, discussed his background and how he can fit into the industry here and offered him a job, just like that. He started work immediately and after a while found another higher role with a bigger firm that is one of the contractors working on the Metrolinx train line projects in the GTA. He told his boss about it who immediately encouraged him to go for it and the rest is history. This gentleman is one of the people who took my advice on Canadavisa forum to get some newcomer professional training while job searching to enhance his chances and he is doing very well now, very fulfilled. I'm sure if you read backwards on this thread you will find other such positive stories that can power you forward. I wish you the very best ahead.
This is why I love this Blackbuddy. He is more patient than I am. I tracked him down and we are connected on LinkedIn. God Bless you jare. I will assign you 5 Coachees. grin

This is not about disagreement. This was no debate. This about calling a spade a spade.
When CIC ask applicants to conduct WES evaluation was it for the fun of it? It was to match your foreign education to a Canadian equivalence.
So sir/ma, please pardon my impatience when I see "bullshit", I am more than eager to say so.
