Sports / Chelsea's 6 Nill Defeat- Worst In 26 Years by Barondenigeria: 8:05pm On Feb 10, 2019
Manchester City took over the English Premier League summit on Sunday in style, inflicting a record 6-0 defeat of Chelsea, and sending them to the sixth position behind Arsenal.

It was the worst defeat ever suffered by the London club in the last 26 years.

But historically not the worst.

Chelsea FC biggest loss and worst defeat was the loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1953.

The Blues lost 1-8 to Wolverhampton in the First Division.

In the FA Cup, Chelsea also once lost 1-6 to Sheffield Wednesday.

Their worst League Cup defeat was inflicted by Stoke City in 1974, when Chelsea were thrashed 2-6 in the Round 3 replay in October 1974.

On 18 April 2000, Chelsea also lost 1-5 to Barcelona in the second leg of the quarter-finals of Champions League.

In the League, today’s showing at Manchester City stands out.

Politics / APC Does Not Engage In Crowd Renting: Lai Mohammed by Barondenigeria: 1:55pm On Feb 10, 2019
The Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has disclosed at a presidential campaign rally in Ilorin, that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has put everything in place to ensure that the visit of President Buhari to Kwara State is a huge success.

“The party has been meeting in the last couple of days to ensure that the President’s visit is very successful. We have watched the rallies in many parts of the country and we want to assure Mr. President that our rally in terms of numbers, quality of people, entertainment and colour will rank among the best,” the Minister said.

He said the crowd that will come out to receive the President will be organic as the party does not engage in renting crowds.

Alhaji Mohammed appealed to security agencies to create a level playing field for all the contestants in the election to allow the people to freely exercise their franchise, saying those involved in legitimate activities have nothing to fear.

He also described the protest in some circles over the redeployment of Police Commissioners across the country as the handiwork of the opposition, which is working to discredit the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The Minister also described as ‘absolute fake news’ the reports in the Social Media that the abducted Dapchi school girl, Leah Sharibu, has died in captivity.

“It’s absolutely fake news. There is nothing like that,” the Minister said at a press briefing in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Sunday

He said the rumour of Miss Sharibu’s death, which surfaced just a few days to the presidential election, is another ploy by the political opposition to tarnish the image of the administration and exploit primordial sentiments ahead of the polls.

“I think it’s part of the opposition’s strategies to throw everything at the administration and at the President. I think everyday they are realising the hopelessness of their position.

“Everyday they are amazed by the support Mr. President is receiving from every part of the country and they have decided that they are going to spread falsehood, inflame passion and make this election a Muslim-Christian affair or North-South affair, but people are not listening to them,” Alhaji Mohammed said.

Travel / Two Dead, 6 Injured In Petrol Tanker Fire In Awka by Barondenigeria: 7:03am On Feb 10, 2019
No fewer than two persons were confirmed dead and six others injured, when a tanker bearing petrol fell at Amawbia Roundabout in Awka and went up in flames on Saturday night.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt from eyewitnesses that at least eight vehicles and some residential buildings within the vicinity were also destroyed in the inferno.

Eyewitness account said that the fire occurred in front of the Amawbia Fire Service and near the Police Headquarters, Anambra Governor’s Lodge and other public buildings.

Narrating his experience, one of the victims, Mr Paul Igwemma, whose car got burnt in the fire, said the tanker was negotiating a bend when it fell and subsequently burst into flames.

Igwemma, who was full of praises to God, said he had to abandon his vehicle and ran for his dear life.

“I saw the vehicle trying to negotiate to this direction and all of a sudden the tank fell and hit the pavement of the roundabout so I immediately out of my car.

“Few seconds after, there was an explosion accompanied by fire and as you can see, my car is burnt beyond recognition, together with about ten other vehicles,” he said.

An eyewitness, Mary Anyaora, who was seen weeping at the scene, said the number of casualties could still be more.

Anyaora said that many more people were still trapped in their buildings and might not be able to escape from the fire.
She said that the effect of the fire could have been minimal, if there was an immediate intervention from the Fire Service.

Confirming the incident, Mr Andrew Kumapayi, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), blamed the incident on careless driving on the part of the tanker driver.

Kumapayi said that two persons died, while six others sustained injuries with eight vehicles burnt beyond recognition.

“The driver did not stop when the tank fell, the incident happened in front of the Fire Service and fire fighters were still making efforts to put out the fire,” he said.

NAN reports that the fire was still raging at the time of filing the report, while men of the fire service were seen battling to put it out.

Politics / We’ll Field Candidates In Zamfara, Rivers, APC dares INEC by Barondenigeria: 9:50am On Feb 01, 2019
By Omeiza Ajayi & Davies Iheamnachor

ABUJA— Despite Wednesday night’s decision by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, barring it from fielding candidates in Zamfara State, All Progressives Congress, APC, has said it would not only field candidates in Zamfara State but also in Rivers State where its fate is also a subject of litigation.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who stated this, yesterday, in Abuja, also added that the appellate court decision on the trial of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has vindicated President Muhammadu Buhari’s handling of the matter.

He said: “Let me add that in Kano State, PDP did not do any primaries and yet today, INEC is not saying anything regarding PDP and all the candidates submitted for PDP in Kano were accepted.

‘’This is a fact that nobody can deny but we will not go to town to start pilloring INEC, this is a very critical institution to the success of any election.

“We heard that INEC is relying on the fact that courts of equal jurisdiction have given conflicting judgements. We can understand that. What it thus means is that it is not over and then we will continue to take steps.

“We are very certain, we did the right thing. The primaries held, INEC was not satisfied with that but it is our right to field candidates and we would follow up all the legal means to ensure that our candidates stand for elections in this 2019 general elections in Zamfara. Same situation for Rivers.

“It also shows for people who are discerning to ask that question, this is supposed to be the APC that INEC is or ought to be working for? And this is what we are going through in the hands of INEC that PDP has repeatedly claimed is put in place to rig elections for APC.

“May I remind all of us that we had primaries in Zamfara, which was affected by conflicts but the process allows for three different options. You could go for indirect, which is an electoral college, you could go with direct that allows every card-carrying member of the party to vote for their chosen candidates and then thirdly, you could go by consensus.

‘’We have the right under the constitution to exhaust these options. We did so.”, he said of the party’s situation in Zamfara and Rivers states.

Adepote Arowojobe

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu and his running mate, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, on Thursday stormed Ikorodu area of the state for a mega-rally, assuring residents of more development in the area if elected.

The duo, alongside party chieftains in the state and other candidates contesting in the upcoming elections, addressed a large crowd of supporters at the ferry jetty in Ikorodu.

Sanwo-olu told the crowd that Ikorodu is an important part of the state which would attract government focus and infrastructure development if he becomes governor, urging them to give him their votes.

“We would continue to develop infrastructure, education, build stadium, roads and pay compensation,” Sanwo-olu said.

He promised that he would ensure that the Isawo-Agric and Igbogbo- Ebute roads were constructed and compensation paid to owners of houses destroyed because of the construction.

Hamzat, who also addressed the crowd, asked for their support and reassured the people that they would keep their promises.

The APC chairman in Lagos, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, said that the party had embarked on many projects to better the life of residents of the state and urged also electorate to come en masse and vote for the party for the forthcoming elections.

He appealed to them to vote for all APC candidates from the Presidential to Governorship and state assembly and national Assembly elections.

” As you can see, APC is a progressive party and our mandate is to ensure everybody enjoys the dividend of democracy; go out and vote for candidates of APC in the coming election,” Balogun said.

Dr Idiat Adebule, Deputy of Lagos State, said there was no doubt that the party, at the federal level, had, in the last three and a half years, done a lot of infrastructure development, far beyond what the country witnessed in the past.

” As you can see, our party is battle ready for the election; in this party, there is prospect because we are progressive. I am assuring that they are not going to back from the developmental agenda of the party,” she said.

Mr Bayo Osinowo, candidate of the APC for East Senatorial District, said that late Obafemi Awolowo laid the foundation on how true democracy should be practised decades ago and party chieftain, Chief Bola Tinubu, was following his footsteps.

Politics / CJN: 25 Lawyers Drag Buhari To Court, Move To Quash Onnoghen’s Suspension by Barondenigeria: 4:23pm On Jan 28, 2019
Twenty Five constitutional lawyers, on Monday, dragged President Muhammadu Buhari before the Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge what they termed as illegal suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The suit came on a day the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, sitting in Abuja, okayed indefinite adjournment of proceedings in the non assets declaration charge the Federal Government filed against the suspended CJN. The Plaintiffs, led by human rights activist, Mr. Johnmary Jideobi, posed two legal issues for the determination of the court.

They prayed the high court to determine, “Whether by the combined interpretation of Section 153(1) (i) paragraph 21(a) of the 3rd Schedule and Sections 271, 291, 292 and 231 of the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [and especially in view of the Supreme Court decision in Elelu-Habeeb vs. AGF (2012) 13 N.W.L.R. (Pt. 1318);], there exists any authority in the 1st Defendant (Buhari) to suspend the 4th Defendant (Onnoghen) as the Chief Justice of Nigeria? As well as, “Whether by the combined interpretation of Section 153(1) (i) paragraph 21(a) of the 3rd Schedule and Sections 271, 291, 292 and 231 of the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [and especially in view of the Supreme Court decision in Elelu-Habeeb vs. AGF (2012) 13 N.W.L.R. (Pt. 1318);] the purported suspension of the 4th Defendant as the Chief Justice of Nigeria by the 1st Defendant on the 25th January, 2019 is not unconstitutional?”.

Upon determination of the questions, the Plaintiffs, asked the court to hold that President Buhari lacked the constitutional power to suspend Onnoghen as the CJN. “A Declaration of this Honourable Court that by the combined interpretation of Section 153(1) (i) paragraph 21(a) of the 3rd Schedule and Sections 271, 291, 292 and 231 of the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [and especially in view of the Supreme Court decision in Elelu-Habeeb vs. AGF (2012) 13 N.W.L.R. (Pt. 1318);] the purported suspension of the 4th Defendant as the Chief Justice of Nigeria by the 1st Defendant on the 25th January, 2019 is of no legal force, unconstitutional and a nullity. “An orders of this honourable court quashing and setting aside [as being unconstitutional and of no legal force] the purported suspension of the 4th Defendant by the 1st Defendant. “An order of this honourable court restoring the 4th Defendant forthwith to his office as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. Likewise, “An order of perpetual injunction of this honorable court restraining the 1st Defendant or any other person acting on his behalf or at his direction from further suspending the 4th Defendant from his office as the Chief Justice of Nigeria”.

Aside President Buhari, other Defendants in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/113/2019, were the National Judicial Council, NJC, the Acting CJN, Justice Tanko Muhammad, and the suspended CJN, Justice Onnoghen. In a 30-paragraphed affidavit that was deposed to by the 1st Plaintiff, the litigants, insisted that President Buhari acted beyond his powers by suspending Onnoghen without recourse to the NJC. “I know as a Nigerian trained Legal Practitioner that the circumstances under which an Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria could be appointed for the Nigerian Federation are limited and do not include the suspension of the holder of that office by an Ex-Parte Order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal emerging from whatever circumstances. “I know as a fact that the 1st Defendant abused his powers and exceeded his constitutional authority when he purported to have suspended the 4th Defendant as the Chief Justice of Nigeria without having recourse to [or by short-circuiting] all known constitutional provisions enclosing the discipline of Judicial officers. “I know that the unconstitutional conduct of the 1st Defendant in purporting to suspend the Chief Justice of Nigeria and unilaterally appointing and swearing in an Acting Chief Justice without the recommendation of the National Judicial Council is extremely offensive to and spiteful of the grundnorm of Nigeria [that is the Constitution], sets a destructive precedence, reeks of utmost bad faith, gravely endangers democracy, undercuts fidelity to Rule of Law, sets a new record in elevated-impunity and desecration of the Constitution with condescending arrogance. “I know that the unconstitutional conduct of the 1st Defendant being impugned herein has set off manifold reaction and shocked the conscience of democrats across the globe as exemplified by the reactions of European Union Mission, United Kingdom and United States of America Missions in Nigeria who issued statements expressing deep concerns regarding the grave development has drawn wide-spread criticisms by Nigerian Citizens...

Politics / Suspended CJN Was Pdps Last hope Of Rigging- APC by Barondenigeria: 11:17am On Jan 28, 2019
Omeiza Ajayi

The ruling All Progressives Congress APC said the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has continued to whine over the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria CJN, Walter Onnoghen because the opposition party had planned to use the top jurist to get back to power at all costs.

National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu in a statement on Monday recalled how in recent weeks Nigerians have been inundated with reports regarding “self-confessed discrepancies in the asset declaration made by erstwhile Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen”.

According to the APC, “the strident opposition to Justice Onnoghen’s suspension coming from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by its presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar again points to their penchant for anything corrupt and criminal”. Why the PDP and Atiku are worried “We have read the PDP and Atiku’s responses to the President’s action with shock albeit with a feeling of vindication.

Their responses portray the Nigeria they wish for. “A Nigeria where the rich and powerful are above the law; a Nigeria riddled with corruption and disregard for set down rules and laws as enshrined in the constitution; a Nigeria where institutions of government are manipulated and exploited for the benefit of a few privileged. “For one, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike’s hold on Justice Onnoghen and a few others in the Judiciary is well-known. This was their trump card to hijack power post-election. It is clear that Justice Onnoghen’s suspension has devastated the PDP as their plans to get back to power through the “cash and carry” justice system they put in place during their unfortunate 16 years reign is in serious jeopardy. “In citing the election tribunals as reason for Justice Onnoghen’s suspension, has Atiku given himself away on his now busted plot to use the tribunals to steal the people’s mandate in the presidential election he knows he will lose? “Nigerians have seen beyond the PDP and Atiku’s charade and reject their dream and inordinate personal ambition in totality. Nigerians have seen the handwriting on the wall and we are poised to defeat the PDP and Atiku in the coming elections under a free, fair, and credible electoral process. “It is completely untenable to insinuate any attempt on the part of our government to rig elections. Our party contested elections in 2015 as an opposition party and we trounced the PDP while operating strictly by the electoral rules. It is even needless for us at this period as the ruling party with unprecedented achievements in less than four years to rig or influence the elections. We are very confident of victory and are desirous of a peaceful and credible elections more than any political party. “Nigerians have shown without doubt throughout this campaign period that never will machinations of the political dark forces be enthroned in this country again. We fought for change, our country is changing and we remain committed to the process. “The PDP and Atiku have asked the international community to intervene in Justice Onnoghen’s suspension. Is the international community not supportive of the fight against corruption? “Against the backdrop of statements by some foreign concerns over Justice Onnoghen’s suspension vis-a-vis forthcoming general elections, we strongly advise that they are abreast with our laws and procedures. A situation where these foreign concerns come across as meddling or being misled or influenced by bogus partisan narratives is unfortunate and unacceptable. “Our firm commitment to ridding the country of corruption and ensuring credible electioneering processes remains resolute”, APC stated. The ruling party also berated Justice Onnoghen for attempting to cling on to power at all costs, describing his action as an assault in the same constitution which he swore to uphold. “We must ask ourselves these questions, why was Justice Onnoghen suspended? What are the charges against him? It is on the basis of this, we had expected the PDP, Atiku and their agents to assess the President’s action. “Justice Onnoghen was accused of non declaration of assets — a requirement by law for every public officer. While under investigations, other transactions have been traced to Justice Onnoghen’s personal accounts, all undeclared as required by law. Justice Onnoghen has personally admitted to this in writing claiming that he made a “mistake” and “forgot” to declare his assets. “In the spirit of good conscience, integrity, character and general conduct expected of occupants of public office, we are of the strong position that Justice Onnoghen should have resigned immediately to face his trial after his confession and spare the Judiciary further disrepute. Justice Onnoghen did not. This in itself smells mischief. “Justice Onnoghen fought to keep himself as CJN by all means possible, thereby fighting the same constitution that he swore to protect. “It is important to remind the PDP and Atiku that Justice Onnoghen is not entitled to special treatment. Such entitlement being canvassed by the PDP and Atiku is alien to our laws and not in tandem with our cardinal objective of fighting against corruption and indeed our overall Change Agenda”, APC added. On Jan. 12, 2018, the U.S. spy satellite NROL-47 launched into space atop a United Launch Alliance Delta IV rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Information about its Launch and operation was shrouded in secrecy.

The Delta IV rocket carrying NROL-47 lifted off at 2:11 p.m. PST (5:11 p.m. EST/2211 GMT) after two days of delays due to weather and technical issues. The mission was launched for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office.

Not much is revealed about the operation/workings of the NROL-47, but here's a close look at the mission emblem for the NROL-47 mission.

"It depicts a battle between good and evil and signifies dedication to mission, military expertise and camaraderie," NRO officials wrote in a description of the image. "Mali Nunquam Praevalebunt" which is Latin for "Evil will never prevail" and represents NRO's commitment to national security."

Amateur observers who monitored the launch at a Dutch tracking station in Leiden, The Netherlands confirmed the spy satellite was in Earth's orbit, transmitting in the TOPAZ frequency, 2241.52 MHz. The orbit appeared to point to ~1100 km orbital altitude and an orbital inclination of ~105-106 degrees.

How certain are we that the NROL-47 and other spy satellites will be deployed to monitor Nigeria's elections next month?

Responding to an email by Insider Post, the United States embassy in Abuja declined to comment on the matter, sighting a partial Government shutdown which has affected activities at US Agencies and Foreign missions.

The operations of the all powerful Reconn machine is shrouded in secrecy, as with most US spy satellites. However, despite its own secret operations, the NROL-47 is rumored to be an all seeing eye, from which no secrets are hidden. (Insider Post)

Politics / US, Other Western Powers To Deploy Satellites To Monitor Nigeria's Polls—atiku by Barondenigeria: 7:04am On Jan 28, 2019

The United States, along other western powers are deploying spy satellites to monitor next month’s presidential election, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, said yesterday, as he cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari and All Progressives Congress, APC, against any rigging plans.

Responding to the administration’s rebuff of the caution by the western powers against last weekend’s suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria, the PDP flag-bearer, while cautioning against any plans to rig the elections, urged Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, military, police and other security agencies not to give in to the entreaties of the APC to manipulate the election.

Atiku in the statement in Abuja, yesterday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, said: “Buhari’s cabal is unhappy with the statements from the US, the British and the EU because they know that these world powers have agreed to re-route their latest and most technologically sophisticated spy sattelites, including NAOL-47 satellite to provide comprehensive coverage over Nigeria on February 16.

The photographs these satellites will deliver cannot only show someone reading a newspaper but also which newspaper they are reading.” “The truth is that, there is no country in the world where a president with this appalling record could ever be re-elected. Over 100 million Nigerians cannot afford even one decent meal a day, yet their president is seeking re-election. The world powers as well as Nigerians also have intelligence that Buhari will decisively lose the election since the people are angry because they are hungry and have no jobs.

There is no level of rigging that this vile government could ever do to overturn the millions of Nigerians who will turn up at the polls to vote him out. We ask our dearest young population who got a job under Buhari in the last four years, to vote for Buhari. “But all those who lost their jobs and whose relations lost their jobs and businesses to his maladministration to please come out in large numbers to elect Atiku Abubabar who is a harbinger of job creation.”(Credit: Vanguard)
