pls sorry for digressing, i just want to know. Is there anywhere that need student to sign on the i-20 form? Asside the attestation part of students below 18yrs? Pls kindly help out
I don’t know the current I-20 format. But I remembered when I got to POE without signing my I-20, the officer was like sign here and I said alright I didn’t know he was like haha that’s fine that’s not a problem. So I don’t think that should be a problem but read the I-20 and sign what have to be signed if you ain’t sure don’t bother you can sign that anytime in as much as it’s your I-20 and it is not required to be submitted. If that makes sense.

I had my interview a couple of days ago. Visa delayed.

VO: hello
Me: hello
Vo: pass your passport and i20 pls.
Vo: what school are u attending?
Me: Lincoln university, Oakland California to begin my MBA with a concentration in management information systems.
Vo: what's your highest qualification?
Me: bsc
Vo: what course?
Me: industrial chemistry
Vo: What year did u finish?
Me: 2012
Vo: what have u been doing since then?
Me: I've been working in my parents vegetable oil production company and since my dad is late, I'm expected to run d place in a few years. This is actually why I'm going for d mba, to acquire the necessary professional skills.
Vo: OK, what do u do there?
Me: I work in d fractionation department
Vo: what other schools did u apply to?
Me: California state university, east bay.
Vo: did u get admitted?
Me: unfortunately, no
Vo: why were u targeting d San Francisco bay area
Me: because of the diversity in d place, I'll get to meet pple from all over d world, learn from them and have new experiences, which is vital for growth. Without new experiences, u recycle your thinking.
Vo: OK. I'm sorry u do not qualify for a visa at this time.
What did I say wrong?? He had denied three people seeking f1 visas just before me. He looked strict and businesslike. He was typing all through and was barely looking me.

Sorry about your denial. But always remember denial is not the end. You have to re apply now with a well improved strategy. I will go ahead and analyze this transcript you have here and a few things you might want to address.
First, your Chemistry degree and MBA seems to be a little bit apart. You must try to use your job to cushion this disparity. Explain the nature of job you were doing in your dad's company. I guess you just mentioning the department is not a good sign of your critical involvement. Also, you have to be a little bit detailed about your response mostly when they ask you about what you have been doing since you graduated. I will also inform you that your DS160 and what you filled in there is crucial. 2012 to 2017 is a long time and you must have had so much you have done in a space of five years which you will have to explain ( have in mind you must try connect your chemistry to why you are interested in MBA) The idea of taking over your late dad's company is great to keep the business going but what about complementing going to learn skills with new business goals you have for the company coming into the management position.

Why are you targeting the Bay area? San Francisco is an expensive area and applying to only California alone must have incited an interior motive. So that is not really good. They expect you to apply to more than one school not in the same locations technically to reduce any doubt that you have a reason for picking a particular area. Also you talking about diversity is a red flag it shows you are more interested in the people than your studies. Talk more about the school, the program, the professors, what the school is known for, the department, the recognition. That makes the VO know that you know your stuff. I hope this helps and I wish you the best. Dont give up and try get it right !!!

Well I would begin by analyzing your situation very careful. First, what do you mean by foundation courses? From my understanding, maybe the school must have looked through your transcript and observed that you haven't taken some important perequisite courses yet. So to avoid you struggling to take the courses at a more higher level, they demand you take those classes. That is how it works. Then if you are changing field, let's say I did mathematics and now I want to get a master's in mechanical engineering, they would require I take some mechanical engineering courses first before proceeding to the master's courses. This condition is what is referred to as conditional admission. Sometimes you can tell the school that you did those courses they are asking you to take in some course you did before and you fully understand it. But they could either accept or reject your claim.

The Visa officer might look at what you studied before and what you are going to study now, to understand the bridging gap. He might further go ahead to ask or try to correlate inherently how you intend to pass those classes. So let's look at those classes in two ways: First if you pass them, then you are fine but if you don't what happens? I know you won't fail it but the visa officer might be kinda of curios about that. So you can explain that you were given this conditional admission because you are interested in applying your knowledge you gain in xxxxx to xxxxx so there is a need in the school syllabus that you take this courses. You can go ahead to say they already sent you some materials and some course outline ( which you can get on the school website) and you have already gone through them, took some text and it's going smoothly. Then you tell him that you already have a pre registration for the courses this summer before you start in full during the fall
This is just to make a claim that your conditional admission isn't just for them to access your level of competence from your previous study before you start your new program. You have to try to back it up because VO won't look at it smiling without taking note.

I guess other gurus have good suggestions as well. That's what I think from my end. All the best!

Gunnerson:
Gurus in the house, please help.
Please i just got admitted to a University for my Masters program in Chemistry and I hope to apply for my ds160 soon. However I'm at a crossroad on filling the form. This is because it is necessary to know that VO questions usually come from the DS160 applicants filled. I finished my NYSC in 2015 and I have been working in a media company that is not related to science at all.
Now the question is, would you advise that i fill my employment history as working, when filling the DS160. Considering that they may ask what have i been doing since i finished NYSC.
Should you advise that I should fill the employment history in the DS160, if a question then comes on what have I been doing, what answer would you advise that i give? and if no, what would you advise I should say i have been doing since 2015?

Thank you.

Firstly, I would say you fill in as being employed because this guy's don't like an idle mind. They believe you should always have something that you are doing which is beneficial to the society without it necessarily being your profession. Secondly, when you are posed with the question, what were you doing in the media company or where did you work and what did you do? You should know that the VO won't start opening the website of your company or making a phone call to see if the media company you worked is related to science or chemistry. You can tell him that you were in the section that publish about science in the science section of the weekly magazine. That your interest lies in communication the beauty of science to high school students, the community and the society at large. So you were part of the team that handles different scientific messages to the community. If he ask example of scientific messages. You can say mostly public awareness, like hygiene, safety, etc

Just look for a way to link it up. Your past job should kind of be in line with what you are going to do now or your past degree so it doesn't sound like you couldn't get a job with your degree instead you opted for anything that was available. This won't definitely send a good message to the VO. Try to always link want you did before, what you are doing now and what you hope to do later together. It gives a sense of direction and purpose!

Thanks, well that's what I think. I guess other gurus who are in the house can give other better opinion.

I am highly loyal to the men of the house. It's being a long time. I wish those who have gotten visas a safe travel and I wish those who are still applying a successful process. Just a word of advise: Dollar has gone up pretty much so be wise when applying to schools, paying application fees and sending packages. Do it wisely, ask questions, research schools properly so that you don't waste money. I will be available for any questions and thoughts.
Slimmy 2005 I greet you hope you are fairing well man.

Hello boss, am putting in for Ph.D Electrical Engineering and it appears South Dakota has a good Power Engineering lab. Can you assist with getting funding in ur school ?

I look forward to a positive response from you.
Sorry I didn't reply you on time. The department of electrical is pretty sound and I think they have some research works going on that's quite extensive. They work hand in hand with the computer science department so a little of both will help you a lot. Do you have a masters degree already? If you don't it's not bad but I hope you get admitted with a sound undergraduate. I inquired about the program it's really good and well funded at this point. Regarding fundings, you will be fine. If you have an undergraduate in EE and you already mailing some professors even if they don't respond timely, funding is like 95% guaranteed and there are other avenues to be a GTA as well. Thanks,I am available if you have other questions you feel I can answer. Best wishes for a great day.

Thanks bro...funding is critical cos without it most Nigerians won't even consider studying in the U.S. but it seems to me that most people that didn't have enough funds survived one way or the other somehow though it was difficult. This gives a lotta people hope that one way or the other dem go make am in "the ame"
Yeah people survive without fundings if you say so. But lets be wise, atleast when you get to new place have something to begin with that's all I am saying. Even a chicken does not put both legs on the floor in a new place according to Niger parable. As you get to understand the terrain before what you have get exhausted, you must have atleast gotten to some point and your hopes will be high and well understood. Don't get into the plane with the notion that "people have survived" it will make you miserable because it's not the way you see it from Nigeria. Atleast a money for a semester or 3/4 of that so that when you are making claims atleast you have some deposit then you might have a few ears to talk to or think of the next step. But coming without anything is like running in the dark. Thanks. I wish you all the best, Thanks and remain positive, wisely.

The reason i called the administrative secretary is because the graduate coordinator has not been responding to my mails.

so my frustration is that i am still being reffered back to him, and i mailed him again yesterday, no reply. thanks for your suggestion though
Hey, you don't need to panick. These guys are busy guys so don't except them to be available at every given time. Here is what I will suggest. There are two ways to go about the call. First is through the graduate school itself then next is the department. If you call the grad school they will inform you if your file is with the department or has returned from the department but if they are not picking up call your department HOD. If he doesn't pick and you didn't get any mail and your patience is running out call/ mail a professor in the department and politely inform him about your interest in the grad school in the department and the situation he will assist you get a hold of things. It happened to me when I applied to Tennessee state university that's how I got a hold of the grad coordinator. Just be proactive instead of seeming desperate. I wish you the best! Thanks.

this. one na die o.
what's the way forward ?
@gunther6, I believe the main reason why it is challenging for such profiles to get funding is most likely going all the way to a phd with your undergraduate. You might have fantastic test scores but I don't believe that is the main stuff they look at. I think there is a step by step process to everything. Even the Americans rarely take such swing to phD and even if they do, that person must be smart, and also remember you are an international student and they don't totally trust what you come with. Here you see many Indians who got above a 100 in TOEFL, and they can't even make a complete sentence so how did they get high scores in speaking? So those schools are top schools and you have people who have had masters degree gunning for same spot as you, so it's challenging. I don't know if this helps. Thanks, just keep hope high!

I see a lot of folks asking about fundings. Well from what I know, it's not easy to get fundings from schools these days on your first year. What I will encourage is that you have some money to pay for your first year and begin to pursue fundings for the later part. I got admitted without fundings. I had money for barely a semester with hopes of living with the money I make from on campus jobs and working hard to get good grade which is not easy as it seems. But when I arrived, I took time to critically looked at the professors that have grants and research work on going. I then approached a prof told him that before I left Niger I have said is him I want to work with. I wind the guy wella he said okay can I give you a test. I said yes then he asked me few fundamental questions and I did alright. I just get ginger he said I see you have the zeal to study and learn and plain about your previous education. I didn't even ask him sir I need assistantship. I will fund you and this is what I am working on. Watin d guy dey do no even relate to mechanical na anatomical endovascular research I come say okay sir. He is a prof of mechanical engineering (fluids) and he has funded me from the start and he is still funding me so I ended up not even paying for the first semester. I blend in sharply and easily to the guys research and it was fun. That's my experience. Guys ask questions carefully select schools which is kinda hard and look at the professors. But first have the money for atleast one semester. I hope this helps. Thanks hailings to men.

I finally arrived United State yesterday all thanks to God and all Thanks to the gurus who have been contributing to this thread, bigfrancis, Slimmy05, ojap, Zeezahbee, Profojah, coobby and many others.

My travel transcript, my flight was schedule for 2:30pm, I got to the airport around 10am accompanied with my Mum, brother and Dannysexy. As at that time the Emirate counter as not started operation, so I use that opportunity to take some pics with my friend and sibling and also went for my breakfast.

Fastforward.
Got back to the airport do the normal checking, the immigration officer collected my 2litre of Palm Oil and my Aboniki that I cant go with it. When I was going to board my flight during the security check one of the immigration officer ask me to settle him. I told him (Na student I be, I no get money na the only land wey my papa get he go sell, and guess u wouldn’t want to collect that kind money…. smile) another security ask me to do weekend for him (Bros walai I no get money ooo, dis school wey I dey go self na loan my papa go collect. lol) inshort I did not give dem a dime.

It 2:30pm, Emirate airline LAGOS-DUBAI, I enjoy the emirate airline WIFI, when I send Msg to friends they thought I was bounce back, they never knew I could be chatting on air. had a 7hours stopover in Dubai before connecting to Boston. I was given a meal ticket, my Brother already advice me to go for Texas Chicken Restaurant. I trek for about 45min, nearly lost self Dubai Airport is damn Big. Slept for few hours at the airport before connection to Boston.

DUBAI-BOSTON is about 13hours, busy watching latest Movie, and eating all the meal brought. For my mind the 255K wey una collect me no go waste. Finally got to Boston at about 2:30pm USA time. Go for immigration check, I was called to window 27.

Immigration officer: Why are you in United State
Me: Am here for my Masters Degree
Immigration officer: Where?
Me: Michigan Technological University
Immigration Officer: can I see you I-20?
Me: Sure, and I handed it over to him
Immigration officer: Is your first time of coming to the United State?
Me: Yea. (he just pick the mic and call the security)
Immigration officer: Can you go and wait there pls, you will have to undergo some immigration screening.
Mesadfor my mind I don enta am today, who say make I follow Boston airport). I was scared because Boston is very far from my School. And my school advice me to come in through Chicago airport, But because I want to spend some weeks with my siblings befor going to school I had to come in 2ru Boston.

I waited for about 5min, a security officer went to the immigration office that interview me and collected my document (my boarding pass ie flight ticket, Passport, I-20) and ask me and 5 other people to follow him. We were taking to a room, (by this time I don they read psalms) the rest were called and interviewed briefly within 30sec and there document were return. I was the only 1 remaining. And another set of people were brought, and still yet to call me.
I was finally called and interview again

Immigration officer: Why are you in united state
Me: Am here for my maters degree in Geographical Information Science
Immigration officer: where?
Me: Michigan Technological University
Immigration officer: Have you been to the United State before?
Me: No No
Immigration officer: have you travel out of you country before?
Me: At all
Immigration officer: Even other African country?
Me: this my first time of going outside my country
Immigration officer: did you come with any food items?
Me: Yes, Yam Flour, Garri, Dry fish
Immigration officer: (Stamp my Passport) gave me back my document and ask me to go and pick my languages for custom check.
I took my bags and went for the custom check, a black man interview me again, asked where I was coming from, the kind of food items I have in my bag, what am in the US for, the course am going for, my State, what my Father and Mother does etc. he scan my bag and told me to open it, check my food items and collect my 3packet of Maggi, he said it Maggi chicken that I cant go in with it

By this time I was already tired and thinking how am gonna embark on another 1:30min journey to where my siblings are cos they told me dey wont be coming to pick me up cos the car is faulty . Took my bags and was still thinking were am going to make a call and also get a bus going to my destination…. Surprisingly friends and family member already outside waiting for me, so so happy……. WELCOME TO AMERICA….nice transcript it was informative, I am also flying with Emirates and have two hours layover in dubai. Wifi in air thats cool grin
