The reckless use of state funds by Chief Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom to bribe the largely impoverished indigenes of the state turned bloody yesterday as five students died in a fracas that ensued at the bribery fest in public glare at the government house in Uyo. The students died as they scampered to share the N15 million naira bribe money while several of them sustained serious injuries. The chaos was complicated by the involvement of security agents on duty as they too engaged in the struggle for free cash. SaharaReporters gathered that the Akwa Ibom state government house has turned into a Mecca of sorts for the over 3,500 support groups engaged in praise singing for Akpabio. these hired crowds throng the seat of power for cash disbursements aimed at buying the gubernatorial election since the governor flagged off his re-election campaign recently. Akpabio had bussed over 5000 undergraduates of tertiary institutions in the state from University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Asura and Uyo City Polytechnic to create an appearance of popularity and youth support in the April governorship election. however, the situation got out of hand at Government House when most of the students realized that the coordinators of the bribe reserved N5 million for themselves from the N15 million booty Akpabio had made available to them for the bribe fest. State government officials mostly from the protocol unit of the Government House and security men on guard duties responsible for coordinating the whole sharing exercise snatched and disappeared with the bribe money during the fracas. The disappearance of the bribe money sparked off wider protests that saw students barricading the entrance to Government House which later escalated to a riot and confrontation with security operatives who had called for reinforcement after making away with the money. Reacting to the clash between security men and students over money , Aniekan Umanah, Information Commissioner of Akwa Ibom state on Friday announced that henceforth the venue of such ‘solidarity visits’ shall be shifted to the PDP secretariat located on Ikot Ekpene road in Uyo. “Henceforth, shows of solidarity and political processions among others are not allowed within and around the Government House premises,” Umanah said in a statement. The statement urged individuals and interest groups, including student bodies, to direct matters concerning the ongoing campaign to the PDP secretariat and Akpabio’s campaign office. SaharaReporters had revealed that Akpabiois one of the governors identified as the major financier of the Goodluck Jonathan election campaign according to a letter of appreciation exposed by SaharaReporters recently. In the early life of his regime, SaharaReporters had exposed Akpabio's penchant for using state funds to give bribes as we provided a trail of his purchase and delivery of a brand new, a Mercedes Benz GL 450 Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) to the EFCC chairperson, Mrs. Farida Waziri. http://www.saharareporters.com/news-page/akpabios-voters-bribery-fest-5-killed-while-sharing-n15-million-bribe-money |
Residents of Omole Estate, Ikeja, have been placed on the alert following reports that a suspected rapist is in their midst. Notices signed by the Chairman of the residents association, Ade Popoola, and posted on every street advise the residents to be at alert as the suspected rapist has successfully gained entry into several houses in the estate. Mode of operation The suspected rapist was described to be a stout man, dark in complexion, and with a scar on his face. He was last sighted on December 29, at Debo Aina Street in the estate but escaped after the residents of the house he attempted to break into sighted him and raised alarm. “The information that came to us from the streets and sectors show that there is a short young man with a mark on his head, having a dreadlocks, going around raping ladies and trying to scale the fence into various homes,” said Mr Popoola. “And after performing his evil act, he will jump the fence again and go into another house, and that is why we put up the notices to warn people to secure their doors when they are going to bed such that if it happens that the rapist comes along, they will be well prepared against the one man gang going about in the estate.” Mum is the word According to Mr Popoola, though he had gotten reports to confirm it, the victims have refused to speak with the authorities because of the stigma associated with rape. “Well, the people that come to us are family members living in the house,” he said. “The estate is organised in sectors. It is the central chairman that reported to me that they are having such complaints. You know this is Africa where nobody will walk up to you to tell you that they have been raped because there is a sigma. It is not like advanced countries where a lady will say it on TV that ‘my father raped me’.” Living in fear A housewife, who did not want to be named, said she was yet to see the suspect, but confirmed that the neighbourhood have been awash with stories about his escapades. “Everybody in my family is at alert and in the highest security conscious mood,” she said. “We do not want to leave anything to chance. We pray that this rapist is arrested soon. I have not seen any rapist, but we have been hearing of his activities. We have taken precaution by putting up more security in our house.” Police response According to Mr Popoola, the incident was reported to the police. “We reported the case to police and they said whenever we apprehend the person, we should bring him to the police,” he said. “The police also sent several patrol teams to survey the area. I visited the police station and had discussions with the DPO. We had some assurances that they are on the lookout for the rapist. Also our private security men in the estate are on the lookout for him. The challenge is that he comes in at odd hours and he does not come in through the main gate.” When contacted, police spokesperson, Samuel Jinadu, said the police are not aware of any rapist at the estate. “We don’t have any report of the suspected rapist, and if there are any, the police will definitely swing into action to arrest him,” he said. I am the murderer, I am not the suspect, I will tell you the truth, I killed my mum because she is a witch," said 26-year-old Olubukola Adefisayo, who is in police custody for allegedly killing her 62 year-old mother, Adedoyin Adeife. The suspect was arrested by the Aguda Divisional Headquarters Area C Surulere on August 21, after report reached the police that she had killed her mother at their Number 2/4 Bola Bumi crescent, Aguda, Surulere. The suspect is a graduate of Accountancy from the Oklahoma University in the United States of America. She confessed to being a cocaine addict from the age of 9 and was sexually abused by her uncle at the age of 3. "I have two children age 3 and 2, but I gave them up for adoption. When I came to Nigeria, I started working for my mum as an estate agent. But she will not pay me well. I got angry because she is very rich. I see her writing cheques in million to her sister, but anytime I asked her for money she will not give me. "I am sane and I am the murderer, I killed my mum after I discovered that she is a witch and had been sleeping with our 12 year old house help, Segun," Miss Adefisayo said. She said she was jailed in the US for attempted murder. "I was living in the US and one of my neighbours had an issue with me over the laundry machine. After that issue, I went to jail and I decided to come back to Nigeria." Miss Adefisayo indicted her mother for her drug addiction. "My mum introduced me to cocaine at the age of 9 and since then I have been an addict. After taking my cracked cocaine one day, I had a flash back on how my uncle raped me when I was 3 years old. I began to cry and I asked our house help, Segun, if anybody had touched him in a way he does not like. Segun told me that my mum did and my mum had also given him cocaine. "I said why should mum have sex with Segun and it got me mad, we used to be poor and suddenly, we became rich because my mum used Bunmi, my sister for money rituals." The suspect said she used a sledged hammer to kill her mother. "Segun told me that my mum also initiated him into witchcraft. I got really angry. I used white clothes to cover the entire mirror in our house; I lit seven candles and waited for 9.45pm which is spiritual time. When my mum came in that night, I asked her if she was a witch, but she was reluctant. I threatened to kill her with the hammer and then she said yes she is a witch and she killed my sister. "My mum tried to collect the hammer from me and we started fighting. I overpowered her and hit her with the hammer on the head, she just slumped and died," she said. When the suspect saw that her mother had died, she said she told the house help to pour acid on the body. Police spokesperson, Frank Mba confirmed the incident. Mr. Mba said: "After committing the crime on August 19, the suspect took the house help and they went to lodge in a hotel. She put a call to her sister in the US telling her that she had killed their mother. "The case was reported to the police two days later and they went to their house and saw the lifeless body of the victim. "From her confession, it is a combination of many factors. She need a psychiatrist and we need to decide if she committed the crime in her lucid period or as a result of the drugs she has been taking. "Meanwhile, the case is been handled by the homicide department in Panti." http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/Metro/5448671-147/Daughter_kills_mother___.csp |
