I was exaggerating, but some states sent a ballot to every registered voter. Where some had died or moved or changed addresses without requesting change of details. As long as the voter registration was not updated everyone in it was sent ballots.

Automatic registration via DMV is highly prone to abuse. I think we can agree on that. If you are an overseer of elections and you want to run for a post later , nothing prevents fraudulent registration of ineligible voters on a small scale. Can be replicated wholesale nationally.

As for Europe you only mentioned UK.Most countries DON'T permit and those that allow it do it under regulated special considerations. As opposed to say Wisconsin? where every voter recieved a ballot mail long before election day. Some two bedroom house recieved 64 ballots, some malls and open fields also recieved ballots via mail.
