By Levinus Nwabughiogu
ABUJA - Aware of the present harsh economic
realities, President Muhammadu Buhari on
Tuesday said that his government is taking
pragmatic steps to cushion the effects on
Nigerians, assuring that there were better days
ahead.
The president who chaired the 8th Annual Bola
Tinubu Colloquium held at the International
Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja spoke on the
theme of the Colloquium: 'Agriculture: Action,
work, revolution'
Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos state and
national leader of the ruling All Progressives
Congress, APC clocked 64 years and held the
event to mark his birthday.
Eulogizing him, president Buhari said the former
governor had shown commitment and zealousness
to Nigeria's growth.
He stated that the government would continue to
invest in human capital development.
"There are very few patriots alive today that can
match the commitment, zealous, creativity that
Bola Tinubu has demonstrated in his contribution
to national growth.
"In the coming months, Nigerians will see much
more actions. Government will continue to invest
substantially in human capital development and
this is just the beginning.
"We are going to hold ourselves accountable. We
will measure results. There will always be some
scepticism, some have even become disorientated
and impatient enough to think that barriers are
insurmountable. Any one who claims great change
is impossible can only look as an ordinary
success", he said.
Apparently gauging the enormity of work to be
done to better the lots of Nigerians, President
Buhari urged all hands to be on deck.
"We can achieve more with partnership that link up
and scale up our respective efforts.
"I am declaring that we need a new approach that
challenges more states and local governments,
more organisation, companies and non
governmental organisations and individuals, some
of the younger people who are here to step up and
play a role because government can not and
should not do it alone. All hands should be on
deck," he said.
The president who commended the organisers of
the Bola Tinubu Colloquium for the choice of the
theme of the event on agriculture stated that the
intention of the government was to create
enabling environment that would bring viability on
the economic potentials of the private sector.
The President said: "We intend to organize an
efficient market infrastructure that will make
agriculture viable for investors. We are providing
an enabling environment so as to ensure certainty
and predictability for the private sector.
"We intend to also ensure that the market is fair
and worth to transform small holder farmers from
beggars to businessmen.
"Further more, we are going to keep focusing on
improved nutrition for children. We know the
effects of hunger and poor nutrition can last a life
time. Children are thrown out of school to earn a
living".
The event attracted the Vice President Yemi
Osinbajo and his wife, Dolapo, wife of the
celebrant, Senator Remi Tinubu, former Chairman
of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, state governors of Zamfara -
Abdulaziz Yari Osun - Rauf Aregbesola, Ogun -
Ibikunle Amosun, Kebbi - Abubakar Atiku Bagudu,
Adamawa- Bindow, Cross River - Ben Ayade,
Bauchi - Muhammed Abubakar, Lagos - Ambode
Akinwunmi, Kaduna - Nasir el-Rufai, Oyo - Abiola
Ajimobi.
The national chairman of APC, John Odigie-
Oyegun, Senator Smart Adeyemi, some ministers
and other top government officials also graced the
occasion.

SportsNIG Vs EGY: Nigeria Face Fine Over Poor Crowd Control by Bawsse(op): 4:30pm On Mar 26, 2016
Nigeria could face African Football Confederation
(CAF) sanctions for allowing too many spectators
into the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna Friday for
an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt.
An estimated 40,000 crowd was inside the 25,000-
capacity northern Nigeria venue when the match
kicked off after the Kaduna state government
allowed fans free entry.
“Nigeria will most likely be penalised by CAF for poor
crowd control even though there was no major
incident before, during or after the match,” said a
leading football official, who requested anonymity.
“Sanctions for such a shortcoming would be a fine
and a warning,” he added.
Another official said the police failed to stop the
crowd gaining access to the stadium even when it
was clear that the capacity was overstretched.
Many spectators watched the 1-1 draw from inside
the seating perimeter while police, some on horses,
patrolled.
Other fans climbed a floodlights pylon to watch the
clash of the former African champions.
In 2009, poor crowd control in Abidjan caused 19
deaths before a 2010 World Cup qualifier between
hosts Ivory Coast and Malawi.
Investigators said ticketless fans were to blame for
the stampede and the Ivorian FA was fined $47,000
by FIFA.
A stampede at the Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana
in 2001 resulted in 127 deaths.

I know this is Nigeria where MAGIC happens. I am asking this question because I witnessed where people couldnt access their accounts because of variation in their birth date... how can a male link his BVN to another account where he/she is a female?

someone help clear my mind here... and if this true, that means someone in a bank should also be prosecuted for aiding fraudulent process... jail should be his/her next point of call
All These cnt be possible without the management of the bank..

PoliticsBauchi Sets Up Panel To Probe 10,000 Ghost Workers by Bawsse(op): 3:23am On Mar 26, 2016
Bauchi State Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, has set up a panel to investigate the over 10,000 ghost workers in the state civil service, saying they will not escape prosecution.

According to him, 10,000 ghost workers were uncovered during the recent physical verification which made Bank Verification Number a compulsory requirement before workers could receive salaries.

The panel comprises a high ranking lawyer from the Ministry of Justice, a senior detective from the police, another detective from the Department of State Services and one each from the Office of the Accountant-General and the Office of the Auditor-General.

The governor said the BVN was one of the various means adopted by his government to track fraud in the civil service and weed out ghost workers.

Abubakar spoke during an interview with journalists in Abuja after the conferment of an award on him by the Forum of former National Assembly members who served between the First and Fourth Republics.

At the event, the governor called on the international community to assist Bauchi State fix public structures such as hospitals, classrooms and others destroyed by the Boko Haram terror group.

He said, “I have done a lot to checkmate activities of ghost workers in my state; that is the burning issue now in Bauchi State. From January till date, I have embarked on an exercise to clean the payroll of Bauchi State. I started with a physical verification and then I went into BVN and BVN has done a lot for us.

“Till date, we have discovered about 22,000 workers whose existences are doubtful. I don’t want to say they are ghost workers and I do not want to say we have discovered 22, 000 ghost workers because it is give and take. They may be genuine workers that have been caught up with one glitch or the other in the system because technology itself has its glitches.

“So, there may be instances like that but I know for a fact that no matter what, those instances will not surpass 5,000. So, even if those cases with glitches go up to 5,000, we have still discovered upwards of 10,000 ghost workers in Bauchi State.

“As I am speaking to you now, the panel is sitting in Bauchi, scrutinising all the papers in respect of those culprits we have been able to identify as ghost workers.

“There are some cases where you will see a male name with BVN and another female name with the same BVN, meaning that the genuine worker is receiving two salaries, one in respect of his name and the other in respect of the female’s name.”

Abubakar said such people had been brought before the committee for interrogation after which their statements would be recorded.

PoliticsBe Patient, Fuel Crisis To End In Two Weeks, NNPC Begs Nigerians by Bawsse(op): 3:15am On Mar 26, 2016
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), yesterday urged Nigerians to be patient, as it is working round the clock to ensure that the fuel crisis currently witnessed across the country end within the next two weeks.

The NNPC, in a statement signed by its Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Garba Deen Mohammed, said as at 1600hrs yesterday, one Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) cargo, containing 42 million litres had completely discharged, two more PMS cargos with a combined ‘Remaining on Board’ (ROB) of 44 million litres are currently discharging while another PMS cargo containing 44 million litres is berthed and awaiting discharge.

The NNPC said it has enough products lined up to ensure that the supply gap which created the problem is bridged, while it added that in order to ensure effective distribution, it is working with Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), oil majors and over 1,000 NNPC staff, nationwide to ensure it overcomes the obstacles in the distribution of the products.

The NNPC said its immediate concern was to make petrol available through the interventions and processes put in place so that the queues will disappear within the next one to two weeks, while in the long term, it is working with the Government to put in place machineries to ensure that the refineries are fixed and working optimally, while the pipelines which have been under attack for some time now are repaired.

According to the NNPC, the Direct Sale Direct Purchase (DSDP) arrangement for crude would commence in the first week of April and all these coupled with the fact that the President has given his support to increase the crude supply to NNPC to ensure local sufficiency of products would go a long way to solve the problems in the short and long term.
