A Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) employee, Mr Monday Osazuwa, on Friday told an Ikeja Special Offences Court how the former apex bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, on different occasions, directed him to collect three million dollars cash in tranches.

Osasuwa, while being led in evidence by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), said he was a dispatch rider in Zenith Bank in 2001 before he joined the CBN in 2014.

Osasuwa said he joined the apex bank as a senior supervisor in 2014.

He said Emefiele was the Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc while he was working as a dispatch rider in the bank.

The witness said he knew Emefiele, who was his boss, while in Zenith Bank and that he later joined him at the CBN.

Lagos, the smallest but highly populous state and Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, is undoubtedly full of activities and excitements.

Founded in 1967 with headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos boasts of some facilities and infrastructure that make business efforts rewarding and life generally interesting.

However, beneath these, lies a growing concern – a housing challenge with crippling rents.

With a land area estimated at 3,577 square kilometres and population estimates of 9,113,605 (2006 census), 12,772,884 (National Bureau of Statistics in 2019) and 35,000,000 (Lagos State Government in 2020), Lagos State continues to have housing deficits in spite of estimated 300,000 new housing units constructed annually in the state.

For many people, finding a decent and affordable place to live in Lagos has become a battle.

Accommodation problem in the commercial nerve centre has become worrisome.

A two-bedroom apartment in Festac Town, for instance, attracts an annual rent of about N900, 000.

A similar accommodation in a suburb, such as Egbeda, goes for an annual rent of N550,000.

Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, says the company has approved a 50 per cent salary increment for staff across board.

Rabiu made the disclosure in an internal memo signed on Sunday in Lagos by Mr Mohammed Wali, BUA’s Head of Human Resources.

The memo quoted BUA chairman as saying that the increment was to mitigate the impact of the economic hardship currently being faced in the country.

On Saturday, February 3rd 2024 when traders closed their shops at the sawmill and plank market located at Awori bus stop, Abule Egba, Lagos State, to retire for the weekend, it never occurred to them that disaster looms.

Following the unveiling of the revised Public Service Rules (PSR), by the Head of the Civil Service Folashade Yemi-Esan, more than 500 Directors across the Ministries, Departments and Agencies may be forced to proceed on compulsory retirement.

Recall that at the public service lecture held at the Presidential villa in Abuja in commemoration of the civil service week, the Head of Civil Service the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan said the Implementation of the revised Public Service rules had commenced.

According to a circular dated July 27 2023, Yemi-Esan, called on Permanent Secretaries, Accountant-General of the Federation, Auditor-General for the Federation, and Heads of Extra-Ministerial Department to ensure compliance with the document.

The revised PSR stipulates that a Director(GL 17) or its equivalent as may be prescribed by other MDA’s shall compulsorily retire upon the attainment of eight years in that position.

A state prosecutor has asked a London court to order the confiscation of more than 100 million pounds ($129 million) from Nigerian politician and ex-Delta State governor, James Ibori.

The popular Ex-Governor had earlier been convicted for fraud in the United Kingdom and the spent years in prison in Britain.

Ibori was extradited in 2011 from Dubai to London, where he was charged with laundering a “corruptly acquired fortune”.

He pleaded guilty in 2012 to 10 counts of fraud and money laundering and received a 13-year jail sentence, an outcome hailed by Britain as a landmark in the struggle against corruption.

Religion has unwittingly been incorporated into Nigeria’s practice of democracy and has become one of the most important sources of polarization in the country’s politics.

Since the colonial era, Nigeria’s extremely volatile political structure has been defined by a Muslim-dominated north and a southern region where Christians are in the majority.

The latest trigger to the age-long tension between the Christians and Muslims in Nigeria has come from a leaked phone conversation allegedly between the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and a Nigerian preacher and founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo.

In the audio which was leaked to the public by People’s Gazette, Obi referred to the elections as a “religious war” and seemingly solicited the help of Oyedepo in spreading his campaign message to Christians in the South-west and parts of North-central.

Prior to the release of the audio recording, Obi had strived to maintain both religious and ethnic neutrality and recently challenged ex-Governor of Enugu state Chimaroke Nnamani, to provide proof of his allegations of ethnoreligious bigotry against him.

“I have been on record to have insisted severally throughout the country that I should not be voted for based on any ethnic or religious link, but to be considered based on character, capacity, and compassion.

“I will also like to challenge anybody including, my dear elder brother (Nnamani) to show anywhere in my public appearance where I in any way portrayed ethnic, or religious bigotry,” Obi said.

This Saturday Nigerians will be trooping to the polls to elect the one, they think, should succeed President Muhammadu Buhari as President. After that, it is going to be a nail biting experience, as they wait for the announcement of who has emerged as President between Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Mr Peter Obi of Labour Party and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC. It is a three horse race with an appendage. NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso would have played a significant role had he teamed up with any of the three top contenders. But ego and the undying, but misplaced, belief by politicians that they will eventually be victorious even in the face of glaring defeat, is set to make this election a cliffhanger.

But I have my guess how the game will eventually pan out and a winner emerge. It will be a mixture of guesswork and facts on the ground. As we all know, though politics pretends to be a branch of science, human behaviour in any given situation is usually, as the economists would say, a game of, on the one hand or the other. It rests on many strands, human variables which can most times defy predictions.

So here is what I think will happen. It might be very difficult for a winner to emerge on the first ballot this Saturday. There is likely to be a run-off, like many including myself, have said severally. But by the standing of the three major contenders, as at today, Atiku Abubakar is definitely not in the position he would have been had Peter Obi not emerged to shake the tables, so badly. Were the contest to be between Atiku and Tinubu, PDP versus APC alone, given so many variables which we would come to soon, it would have been a clear walk in the park for the PDP candidate. And this is why: most Nigerians are today disgruntled and are vengefully baying for blood, having been impoverished by the grossly incompetent, clannish, and better forgotten government of Major General Muhammadu Buhari. The economy is in ruins. Poverty walks on skeletal feet. Despair rules the affairs of the land.

Add to this the many observable failings of the candidate of the APC, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Add to that the fact that there is an ongoing war currently leading into the elections in the APC. For most Nigerians, Tinubu, who could have been considered a very good candidate, five, ten years ago is today a shadow of himself. Frail, stuttering, forgetful and unable to hold an intelligent conversation for two minutes without major gaffes, Nigerians shudder to think that they will have an evidently unwell President succeed the outgoing one who spent the last eight years, junketing from one hospital to the other in Europe, especially, the United Kingdom.

President Muhammadu Buhari has decided to make a critical decision in seven days following the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria to change high-value Naira notes with new ones.

The founder of DAAR Communications Plc, Raymond Dokpesi has been released after being detained for questioning at the London Heathrow airport on Sunday.

Dokpesi arrived via Frankfurt from Abuja on a Lufthansa airlines flight and was invited off the plane, before other passengers were disembarked.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has quietly ordered electricity distribution companies to increase the cost of electricity across their franchise areas.

ONE hundred days after General Muhammadu Buhari became president, Femi Adesina, his Special Adviser on media gleefully announced that a new Sheriff was in town. He told the world that corruption had nose-dived and taken a flight on the assumed body language of the President. Almost seven years and seven months later, with corruption more emboldened and running riot, I am happy to announce that Buhari, dressed in that borrowed robe by Adesina has come out to denounce him and cede the position to the new kid on the block: Government Ekpemupolo, otherwise known as Tompolo. He is the new Sheriff who has generously acceded to receiving only a monthly N4 billion salary to do wonders in the creeks. And what wonders he has started doing.

Tompolo, before now, a feared Niger Delta militant and severally a fugitive from justice, has generously accepted a waiver on his warrant of arrest from President Buhari and his All Progressives Congress, APC. What is left now is for him to be crowned the new Petroleum Minister. I dare say he should also be begged to combine this role with being Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Chief of Naval Staff, DG DSS and DG Customs. The reason is simple. What the combined occupants of these offices failed to achieve all these years, Tompolo has done in less than two months after they ceded their duties to him. Tompolo has put up a typical Nigeria drama and we are all entranced in charmed guffaws.

The declaration by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday has gone awry as he faces attacks from all quarters.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports first to declare <a href="https://thenewsguru.com/news/breaking-vp-osinbajo-formally-declares-to-run-for-2023-presidencyvideo/">Osinbajo's move on Monday</a> to be out of place was an APC chieftain, Joe Igbokwe who quickly advised the veepee to backpedal before it's late.

Igbokwe in one of his verified handles advised Osinbajo not to contest against his principal and he politely cautioned him to tread softly.

“Let me drop it here for history and posterity: If you are one of the people Asiwaju (Tinubu) raised up and you are eyeing the presidency of the federal republic of Nigeria, show respect and withdraw from the race,” Igbokwe wrote on his known Facebook page.

TheNewsGuru.com can authoritatively confirm that the accident in which two police escorts of former President Goodluck Jonathan died this evening involved the last security car in the convoy.

TNG gathered that the car suddenly veered off the road and in the process, rammed into a tree killing two of the security aides of the former President.

No reasonable explanation has been given so far as to the cause of the sudden crash.
