Sports / Rejuvenating Arsenal Defeat Chelsea FC At London Derby by BCASH(m): 11:06pm On Dec 26, 2020
The Boxing day London derby saw a rejuvenated Arsenal recorded an important victory over Chelsea to end their seven-game run without a win in the Premier League.

The win means that there would be an ease of pressure on boss Mikel Arteta.

Two first-half goals set the platform for the Gunners’ first top-flight win since 1 November.

Alexandre Lacazette sent goalkeeper Edouard Mendy the wrong way from the penalty spot and Granit Xhaka curled in a superb free-kick 10 minutes later to put Arteta’s side in control.

Bukayo Saka’s cross then dropped into the top corner early in the second half to put the game beyond the visitors.

Tammy Abraham scored from close range to make it a nervy final five minutes for the hosts and Jorginho then saw his weak penalty saved by Bernd Leno.

But it was an otherwise lacklustre performance by Frank Lampard’s side, who missed the chance to go second.

It was a well-deserved victory for Arsenal, who climb to 14th and will hope any talk of a relegation battle is now behind them.

Crime / Amotekun, Family Disagree Over Killing Of UI 400 Level Student by BCASH(m): 10:43pm On Dec 26, 2020
The Oyo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Operation Amotekun has said that its men killed a leader of an armed robbery gang and not a student of the University of Ibadan as being claimed by the National Association of Nigerian Students.

The NANS and the family of Akolade Gbadebo, who was a 400-level student of the Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo, affiliated with the University of Ibadan, had accused Amotekun of killing the student. They said the slain student was not an armed robber contrary to the claims of the security outfit.

But the commandant of Amotekun in Oyo State, Col. Olayanju Olayinka (retd.) in a statement on Saturday said his men only had an encounter with a three-man robbery gang and killed its leader. He added that the two surviving members of the gang were handed to the Atiba Police Station in Oyo town.

The statement read in part, “On Sunday 20th December, 2020, at about 0040hrs (past 12midnight), a mobile patrol team of “Amotekun operatives from Oyo East and Atiba Local Government Areas ran into an illegal roadblock mounted around Sabo area in Oyo town, opposite old Isale Oyo Community Bank along Oyo – Ogbomoso expressway.

“While the team was attempting to clear the barricade to facilitate smooth passage for interstate commercial vehicles plying the road, a group of armed men suspected to be robbers fired at the Amotekun operation and a gun duel ensued.

In the process, one of the robbers nicknamed Akin Sarz was neutralized and two other gang members were arrested at the scene with a locally made pistol with cartridges.

“Preliminary investigation conducted at Atiba Police post revealed the identity of the deceased as a student of the Federal College of Education Special(SPED), Oyo and a known cultist. The gang members confirmed that the deceased was their gang leader and that they have been terrorising the general area of Afijio and Oyo township for some time.”

But a younger brother of the deceased, Habeeb, when contacted told our correspondent said his brother was not an armed robber nor a cultist.

He described the claim of the Amotekun commandant as falsehood, saying the security outfit was “concocting lies to cover their wicked act.”

He said, “My brother was not an armed robber, they are just looking for different lies to cover their wickedness, their first reaction to the killing of my brother was different. They said there was no killing either of a student or of anybody.

“I believe they did not know that the killing would attract public attention and now that it has become a public discussion, they are fabricating another lie and that is why they are now labeling him as an armed robber.

“The two persons they claimed to arrest at the scene even said they arrested them where they were eating. They said they did not know my brother, so you can see that they are not saying the truth.”

Politics / Northern Elder Forum Advise Buhari To Resign by BCASH(m): 8:14am On Dec 03, 2020
The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, has said that in civilized nations, a leader who fails to secure the lives and properties of his people would have resigned honourably.

The group said this in a statement released by its the Director of Publicity and Advocacy of the forum, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, on Tuesday, December 1, while reacting to the recent killing of over 43 farmers in Borno state by Boko Haram members.

According to the group, life has lost its meaning in the Buhari-led administration.

The statement in part reads

“These particular killings have been greeted by the most insensitive response by spokespersons of the president. The lame excuse that farmers had not sought permission from the military to harvest produce merely exposes the misleading claims that our military had secured vast territories from the insurgency.

Under this administration, life has lost its value and more and more citizens are coming under the influence of criminals. We do not see any evidence of a willingness on the part of President Buhari to honour his oath to provide security over Nigerians.

In civilised nations, leaders who fail so spectacularly to provide security will do the honourable thing and resign.”

Education / Prolonged ASUU Strike Infringe On The Right Of Nigerian Youth Says Moghalu by BCASH(m): 7:03am On Nov 19, 2020
Prolonged ASUU Strike Infringes on the Right of Nigerian Youth to Education, Says Kingsley Moghalu

Former Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria and Convener To Build A Nation, Kingsley Moghalu said the prolonged ASUU Strike have infringed the right of Nigerian Youth to Education.

According to a press statement released on Wednesday, 18th of November, 2020

"For eight months now, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike. The prolonged strike constitutes a serious infringement on the right of Nigerians, especially the youth, to education. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, education is a fundamental human right for everyone."

"Nigeria has had too many ASUU strikes for any meaningful university education system. But the current strike has simply gone on for too long. Whereas industrial actions are legitimate, they become dysfunctional when they become protracted."

He further stated that "the government has allowed the current ASUU strike to continue for many months, by not reaching agreement with the lecturers, is very unfortunate. It amounts to a dereliction of the duty of the government to the wellbeing of the citizens. This strike has inflicted mental torture on university students, who are left to wonder when they will complete their programmes."

"Sadly, the ASUU strike falls into an established pattern. The government has not given due attention to education. The country has been underinvesting in education for years and is far behind its comparator developing countries and emerging economies in terms of public investment in education. For instance, the allocation to education as a percentage of Nigerian government’s total expenditures averaged just 7.7% between 2015 and 2020. In comparison, South Africa’s budgetary allocation to education was consistently above 18% in the same period, rising above 20% in 2020, according to data by the World Bank."

"At a time that the government was negotiating with ASUU over pay – even if the payment platform has dominated the negotiation – it submitted the 2021 Appropriation Bill in which only 5.6% of the total public expenditures was allocated to education. This indicates that the government is not giving enough considerations to the major issue in its long history of dispute with ASUU. The main issue has been the funding of the tertiary institutions, of which the emoluments of the lecturers are just a part."

"The ASUU strike now needs to end. To demonstrate commitment to adequate funding of education, the government needs to withdraw the 2021 Appropriation Bill and increase its allocation to education to at least 15%. This is a necessary first step to signal the wider reforms that are necessary to reposition the country’s education system.

But it is not enough to throw money at problems. Education in Nigeria needs comprehensive reform. Such reform must include: 1. Review of tertiary institution admission criteria and standards, balancing access to education with quality of education; 2. Curriculum review to ensure priority for science, technology, vocational skills and entrepreneurship; 3. Review of educational pedagogy; 4. Massive investments in learning equipment and other educational infrastructure; 5. Fundamental improvement of teacher pay (part of the subject of the ASUU strike); 6. Fundamental overhaul and strengthening of the regulation and regulatory oversight of the education sector; 7. Restoration of the CULTURE of education as a priority value system for Nigeria."

Politics / New Minimum Wage Is Not For LG Worker Says Kwara State Govt by BCASH(m): 11:15am On Oct 08, 2020
Kwara's state government on Wednesday insisted that payment of the proposed minimum wage is not feasible for local government employees.

According to Mrs. Harriet Afolabi-Oshatimehin, the state commissioner for communications, made this known in a statement in Ilorin, the state capital. The challenge, however, was how the local authorities can afford it. At the moment, all local governments together earn an average of N2.6 billion per month, including the 10 percent of their share of the IGR. It is remarkable that the monthly wage bill of these local governments is about N2.5 billion. it should be noted that the expenditure are based on the existing minimum wage of N18,000, ”said the commissioner. She said that when considering the new minimum wage, including the resulting adjustments, the wage bill will skyrocket to about N3 billion, adding that the revenues of local governments cannot currently afford that. The government is determined to pay the minimum wage, but begs the workers to accept a more reasonable scale that brings the total wage bill to less than N3 billion. We call for reasonable and practical steps to avoid a situation that will lead the local government to borrow to pay salaries, as was the case before this government, she said.

Meanwhile, the state government said that personnel audits and employee verification are part of its efforts to reposition public service in the state and are not a prerequisite for the payment of the minimum wage. “Certainly, the minimum wage negotiations will continue on Thursday (today). The minimum wage is a law that the state government will obey, ”she said. Previously, organized workers in the state had asked workers to prepare for a union action that was due to begin on Monday, October 12. The workers 'leaders rejected a new round of workers' verification and auditing by the government as a condition of paying the workers minimum wages.

The union leaders had given the state government a 14-day ultimatum on September 28 to begin payment of the new national minimum wage. Recall that in March, at a consultative meeting in Ilorin, the state capital, the governor had told union leaders that he was willing to sign the deal if he would not be held accountable if the councils fail, and noted that the councils currently struggling to get paid the N18,000 minimum wage and even had to draw on their savings and IGR before paying the February salary. However, the unions unanimously urged him to sign the agreement and leave the local government agencies to draft the payment modalities, including working with the government to exterminate ghost workers, clear payroll, and reduce wage costs.

Crime / NASS Reject Motion Seeking For Scrapping Of SARS by BCASH(m): 11:03pm On Oct 07, 2020
Despite public uproar and condemnation on Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of Nigeria Police Force by Nigerian,  Ninth Senate House of Assembly has kicked against the scrapping of the unit.

In reacting to a motion moved by , Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, in which she called the attention of all member of the senate on activities mostly engage by member of the unit, which include harassment, extortion of youth, incessant killing of Nigerians amidst others, which led to recent protest by frustrated youth and concern elite in the society on social media.

President of the senate, Sen. Ahmad Lawan, condemned the call for the scrapping of the unit, positing that not all personnel of SARS engaged in extra-judicial activities.

He said, “Scrapping the SARS now may not be the best option because the nation may lose the best hands in the agency while trying to do away with the bad eggs among them. Scrapping of agencies when you have mistakes may not be the best position. If you scrap SARS, you lose the chance of getting those doing well to continue.”

The Senate, however, resolved to probe the extra-judicial arrest and killings of Nigerians by SARS operatives.
However, President of the Senate, Sen. Lawan mandated the House Committee on Police, Judiciary and Human Rights to begin the probe of human rights abuses of Nigerians by SARS.
“Offenders must be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others,” he said.

Education / NANS Ogun JCC Ask Gov Dapo To Rescind Laycon Appointment by BCASH(m): 10:47pm On Oct 07, 2020
Ogun State Ask Ogun State Governor to Rescind the Appointment Conferred on BBNaija 2020 Winner

Ogun State Joint Campus Committee of National Association of Nigerian Student has called on Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo to rescind the appointment of Ogun State Youth Ambassador Conferred on 2020 Big Brother Naija Winner Lekan A  popularly known as LAYCON.

According to media press release memo today 07th of October, 2020 signed by the Chairman of the JCC Axis Com. Bamigbose Tomiwa, the Chairman called the appointment a sheer misplaced priorities.

According to the media press release "It is the height of irresponsibility and recklessness to read that Governor Dapo Abiodun paid host to the winner of BBNaija2020 and even went as far as splashing taxpayers money on him based on the fact that he emerged winner of the recently concluded BBNaija.

As an association, we cannot imagine how a State Governor during this post-Covid19 era spend #5m cash, a 3-bedroom bungalow on a frivolous assignment such as Youth Ambassador. Isn't this some sort of duplication which we have been complaining of? Isn't it correct to ask the Governor the essence of the office of SA Youths? Isn't it correct to ask the Governor what informed the appointment? Isn't it correct to ask the Governor the job description?
We cannot fold our hands and watch the Governor squander taxpayers money on an individual basically for winning Big Brother Naija when there are many things expected of this same government to do to boost the economy and improve the standard of living of his electorates during this period of economic recession which will have more impact on the people, most especially when the poor man on the street is clamouring for palliatives, undergraduates are clamouring for waiver of house rent, some of our students are seeking for loans to pay school fees, many parents have lost their Jobs, and many small scale business entrepreneurs have suffered losses as a result of increase on the prices of goods and services."

He furthermore says that such appointment should have been given to outstanding best student in the state "Few months ago, a team of students from the prestigious Tai Solarin University Of Education under the umbrella of ENACTUS, won a global competition that had 128 teams from about 120 countries as participants. This contest was not an immoral contest, but a competition based on ideas and intellect. They won it on a global standard. Unfortunately, these achievement did not draw the attention of any government official, our local television station, OGTV not to mention any national dailies could identify with their feat.
No top government official appreciated or encouraged their efforts neither were they recognized by the state government.

To the entire students of the Gateway State, it is a slap on our face that a BBNaija winner is being appreciated by the state government above our global pride, this is a state where the likes of Late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Prof. Wole Soyinka and others hailed from. If you can't identify with our sane achievements, we will fight for our standard place in the government.

We condemn totally, the appointment and the lavish spending which was exhibited by the Governor yesterday. The gesture which was extended to the winner of BBNaija signalled but a waste and misplacement of priorities most especially when it is coming from a Governor who has never for once deem it fit to extend such gesture to best graduating students in Ogun State most especially the TASUED student who won $20,000 grants few weeks back".

If we are to break it down conservatively, a 3-bedroom apartment will cost #25m. If such money had been judiciously used as expected of a responsible government, it would have refurbished at least 2 primary health centres in the State. But, the Governor decided to throw close to #30m into the drain all in the name of a frivolous appointment such as Youths Ambassador in a State where there are existing Youths Ambassadors which are the SA Youths and Commissioner of Youths.

It is based on the Aforementioned issue that we demand that the Governor RESCIND his action as a matter of urgency, we also demand that the Governor work towards providing palliatives for students across the state, and work towards fulfilling all the promises made to our students during his campaign, anything in the contrary shall be met with stiff resistance.

Politics / Ondo Speaker Claim "Thug" Who Invaded State House Of Assembly Came For Prayer by BCASH(m): 3:52am On Sep 08, 2020
Following the invasion of the Ondo State House of Assembly by suspected thugs on Monday morning, Speaker of the Assembly, Bamidele Oleyelogun, said that those, who besieged the complex only came to pray for a peaceful election.

The thugs suspected to be members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers had stormed the Assembly complex in the early hours of Monday and blocked the entrance to the gate.

Armed with sticks and other dangerous items, the hoodlums were allegedly led to the Assembly complex by Chairman of NURTW in the state, Mr Jacob Adebo, popularly known as “Idajo”.
Decked in Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s campaign attire, the thugs were said to have denied some lawmakers access to the Assembly complex.

Some of the lawmakers allegedly disallowed into the Assembly complex include Deputy Speaker, Ogundeji Iroju (Odigbo constituency), Wale Williams (Ondo West constituency II), Tomide Akinribido (Ondo constituency I), and Favour Tomomowo (Ilaje constituency II).

Speaking on the issue, Oleyelogun said, “Those who trooped to the Assembly were members and drivers of the NURTW who came to pray for a peaceful governorship election in the state at the complex.

“They were only here at the Assembly for a prayer session and they were also led by the NURTW Chairman in the state and we didn’t deny anyone entry into the Assembly.

“In fact, over 300 of them came here for the prayer session and their aim was not to attack or block anyone but to pray for the people and a violence-free election in October.”

Reacting, Williams condemned the claims of the Speaker, noting that he had only dragged the name of the parliament in the mud.

He said, “The emergency prayer session that the Speaker talked about was only an afterthought when the people had raised the alarm that armed thugs stormed the Assembly and blocked some of us from entry.

“Immediately they did not allow us enter the complex, we called the Commissioner of Police in the state, Bolaji Salami, but he refused to pick my calls and we called the Director-General of the DSS and also called the Army Commander in the state, who sent their men to ensure orderliness at the complex.

“So, what happened in the Assembly today showed that we are in another era of tyranny, oppression and intimidation in Ondo State.”

Politics / EDO 2020: Oshiomhole, Ize-iyamu Go Down On Their Kneels, Plead For Support by BCASH(m): 9:39pm On Jul 26, 2020
A mild drama played out on Sunday in Edo State as a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, and the APC governorship candidate in the September 19 election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, went down on their kneels, pleading for support from the traditional rulers and the people of the state.
Oshiomhole, who’s also a former Edo State governor, knelt down along with Ize-Iyamu at the palace of His Royal Highness, Edomwonyi Iduozee Ogiegbean, Enigie of Egbaen town and President of Enigies in Benin Kingdom.

The governorship candidate used the occasion to present his SIMPLE agenda manifesto to the traditional rulers.
Ize-Iyamu said his manifesto highlighted some of the measures designed to tackle insecurity, particularly the rising cases of kidnapping, through careful investments and partnership with community heads and traditional rulers for crucial local intelligence.

“We will replace the elitist and detached approach of the present government with a functional and true government of the people, by the people, and for the people with felt policies and achievements at the grassroots,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the Enigies for their prayers, blessings, and warm reception.

Politics / Sanwo-olu Celebrate Jakande At 91 Describe Him As Epitome Of Honest by BCASH(m): 12:27am On Jul 24, 2020
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated former governor of the state, Lateef Jakande, on his 91st birthday celebration.
Sanwo-Olu, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, described Jakande as an elder statesman worth celebrating for his life of consistent commitment to public service.

The governor said Jakande popularly referred to as ‘Baba Kekere’ brought a lot of development to Lagos State as governor between October 1, 1979 and December 31, 1983 in line with the five cardinal programmes of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) founded by the late sage and former Premier of the Western Region, Obafemi Awolowo.

He also described the former Minister of Works as epitome of honesty, dedication and service, who used his elevated positions for the betterment of the people he served, especially during his tenure as governor of Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu Jakande is one of the few Lagosians and Nigerian leaders who has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the state and the entire country by delivering dividends of democracy to the people.

He said the former governor left with impeccable records in Lagos State and that is why till date he remains a reference point for governors, not only in Lagos but across the country.

“Alhaji Jakande’s administration introduced housing and educational programmes that targeted the poor, building new neighbourhood primary and secondary schools and providing free education for all.
“Baba Jakande within his four years in office established Lagos State University. His government constructed over 30,000 housing units. The schools and housing units were of great value to the masses.
“Having distinguished himself as ‘Action Governor,’ Alhaji Jakande was appointed Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha regime. He proved his worth in office by building thousands of housing units in different parts of Nigeria as Federal Low Cost Housing Estates,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor added that Jakande’s selling point is not only in politics but journalism, his chosen profession.

According to him, “Alhaji Jakande also made remarkable contribution to the media industry as a respected journalist and media manager. He used the power of the press to influence positive changes in the country’s social and political landscape.”

Sanwo-Olu wished the nonagenarian leader more years of joy and good health for a continued service to humanity.
