Rattled by the defection of five out of its seven aggrieved governors to the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday, the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has scheduled an emergency meeting for next Monday. Saturday PUNCH learnt in Abuja, on Thursday that the party’s leadership at the meeting would determine the fate of the rebel governors. It was further gathered that the emergency meeting would among other things, decide on what punitive measures to be taken against the governors and lawmakers, who are likely to join them. Sources close to the party told our correspondents that the party was afraid there could be mass defection of the PDP National Assembly members to the APC. Investigations also revealed that the National Working Committee of the PDP at the meeting would discuss how it would not lose its majority status in the National Assembly to the APC. It was learnt that the meeting was specifically put in place to brainstorm on the movement of the governors to the APC because the weekly NWC meeting traditionally holds on Wednesdays. One of our correspondents gathered that the leadership of the PDP had been considering how to curtail the movement of any lawmaker elected on the platform of the party to the opposition. A source in the party said, “We are going to consider all the legal options before deciding on punitive measures for the governors and lawmakers that defect to the APC. “Nothing is on the table yet, but I can assure you that the PDP will hit back. One of the punitive measures we will consider is impeachment of the governors and how feasible it is. By Monday, we will unfold our strategies. Also, we must ensure that the PDP does not become a minority party in the National Assembly.” When contacted, the National Publicity secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisah Metuh, confirmed to one of our correspondents on the telephone on Thursday, that the PDP was indeed planning to hold the meeting on Monday. He also said that the issue of the rebel governors would form part of deliberations. According to him, the meeting will, among other things, discuss issues affecting the party in general and other recent developments in the polity including the defection of some of their governors. Metuh, who also spoke on the issue of the threat by some lawmakers to defect from the PDP, said that the national leadership of the PDP had implicit confidence in the leadership of both houses of the National Assembly to maintain the party’s positions. He said, “Well on the issue of Amaechi and the other governors who have defected, there is an emergency meeting of the NWC to discuss all matters on Monday. “On the issue of the lawmakers, the leadership of the two houses of the National Assembly are PDP members. The leaders are capable and are loyal. We have confidence in them. They have not shown any cause for doubts. They are loyal party members who can be relied upon at any time. All I can tell you is that we are going to discuss all the issues.” When contacted, the Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso said he was not bothered about his position as governor. This, he said, was because the struggle he and his colleagues were involved in was a struggle to salvage democracy and not about any individual. Kwankwaso spoke to Saturday PUNCH through his Director of Press and Public Relations, Baba Dantiye, via telephone on Thursday. He said, “Let’s wait and see what happens on Sunday (after the meeting with the President). It’s not a matter of seat; it’s the issue of rescuing democracy and the nation.” Saturday PUNCH also tried to find out if the deputy governors of the affected states would also defect to APC, but most of them could not be reached for comments. Although the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Umar Ganduje could not be reached for comments, a source close to him confided in one of our correspondents that he had implicit confidence in the governor. The source said, “You know His Excellency, the Deputy Governor is a close confidant of the governor. Politically they have been on the same page and will continue to be.” The Spokesperson of the Kwara State Governor, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday declined to respond to the question on whether the Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, would be willing to vacate his office as a result of his defection to the APC. He said Ahmed was not in town, adding that he was the only person who could respond to such an issue. “We have no response to the question. The governor is not in town. He is the only person that can respond to such a question,” Akorede said. Meanwhile, a former governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has said that he is ready to work with anybody in the state because politics is about people. The clarification became necessary as the APC in its power sharing deal on Thursday said the defected governors would be in charge of party machineries in their states. Shekarau who spoke through his Director of Press and Public Relations, Sule Ya’u Sule said, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, welcomes everyone into the APC family, politics is about people. “The only thing is that, no member of the party should be treated like a second class citizen. There should be justice and fairness to all.’’ Source: www.punchng.com/news/defection-pdp-plans-punishment-for-rebel-govs-lawmakers/ |

An anonymous tipster has confided in SaharaReporters that Festus Iyayi, a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), was actually shot by policemen in the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada, prior to the road accident in which he supposedly died last week. The source claimed that the injuries found on the late writer's chest were consistent with gunshot injuries and that a bullet did pierce his heart. One Dr. Paul Amodu of the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja had revealed that Professor Iyayi died after "something" pierced his chest, but he didn't specify what it was. It was reported last week that the popular professor and writer died in a collision with a security vehicle in Governor Wada's convoy. Sources at ASUU said they had dissuaded Iyayi's family from a "rushed" burial, as they suspected foul play. One of the sources recalled that another former president of ASUU, Dr. Mahmood Tukur, also died in suspicious circumstances on the Kaduna-Zaria highway, with the police claiming he died of an asthma attack because he ate pepper which, they claimed, triggered it. SaharaReporters spoke with Prof. Iyayi's son, Omole, regarding the latest information, but he said the family was unaware, and that they do not even have the autopsy performed yet. A press statement issued by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA)signed by its President Osahom Enabulele has previously called for a special inquiry into Professor Iyayi's death but the statement didn't say if the doctors found that Iyayi may been shot as alleged by the anonymous source. Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, on Tuesday dared Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State to present the 19 governors he claimed re-elected him as the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum. In his reaction to an earlier interview Gulak granted The PUNCH in which he said the Presidency identified Governor Jonah Jang as the NGF chairman, Amaechi had on Monday said he was re-elected by 19 governors against the 16 who voted for Jang. “It is a known fact that in the election for chairman of NGF held on May 24, Governor Amaechi got the mandate of the majority of his colleague-governors to continue to serve as their chairman when 19 governors voted for him as against 16 that voted for Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang. We know that 19 is always greater than 16,” Amaechi’s spokesman, David Iyofor, had written. But Gulak insisted on Tuesday that Jang remained the chairman of the NGF recognised by the Presidency. While faulting Amaechi’s claim that his re-election was accepted by majority of the governors, the presidential aide asked the governor to present the 19 governors who voted for him. He said the poor attendance recorded during the retreat the Rivers State governor organised in Sokoto on Saturday was a clear sign of the non-acceptability of his leadership by his colleagues. “If Governor Amaechi is claiming that 19 governors re- elected him as the chairman of the NGF, let him present the 19 governors. You are aware of the poor attendance at the retreat he organised in Sokoto. That was a sign that he is not the leader of the forum,” Gulak said. On the statement that he was misleading the President, Gulak said, “If I am misleading the President, who is leading him (Amaechi)?” He insisted that the seven aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party governors were being led by their personal ambitions and not national interest. Gulak said the earlier they embraced peace and settled down to work for the citizens of their states who elected them, the better for them. President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday denied a claim by Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State that he reported a serving minister who allegedly collected a $250m bribe from an oil company without the President acting on the information. A newspaper (not Saturday PUNCH) had on Friday quoted the governor, who is one of the seven aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party governors, as making the claim in an interview with an Abuja-based radio station on Thursday. Lamido was quoted as saying: “Do you know that recently a top minister received a $250 million (about 42.25 billion) bribe for himself… he (the minister) is in the cabinet; he is in this current regime; he knows and I know, and I told the President.” But Jonathan, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, described the governor’s claim as “grossly irresponsible, false and mischievous.” He said no such communication took place between him and the governor. He said the governor’s “patently bogus allegation” was a callous attempt to impugn his (the President’s) integrity and cast aspersion on his administration’s anti- corruption war. Jonathan added that Lamido descended into “the unscrupulous, reckless and thoughtless peddling of arrant falsehood” in order to score cheap political points for personal and sectional political gains. He added that if the governor has credible information about a minister receiving the said amount as bribe as he claimed, he should publicly name the minister involved and provide evidence to support his allegation. In the event that he is unable to do so, the President said Lamido should be prepared to offer an unreserved apology to him and Nigerians for what he called “his unwarranted and unjust effort to denigrate, disparage and malign the President and the Federal Government.” The President said while his administration would continue to make corrupt public officials answerable for their actions, he would not succumb to harassment and blackmail by self-seeking politicians jostling for personal advantage. The statement read, “We have noted with much regret, the grossly irresponsible, false and mischievous claim by the Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido that President Goodluck Jonathan has refused to act on information that a serving minister recently collected a bribe of $250 million from an oil company. “The Presidency views the patently bogus allegation reportedly made by the Governor in a radio interview yesterday as an unacceptable and callous attempt to unjustly impugn the integrity of President Jonathan and cast aspersions on the seriousness of his Administration’s efforts to curb corruption. “The allegation and the claim by Alhaji Lamido that he informed President Jonathan of the acceptance of the huge bribe by an unnamed minister is absolutely without any foundation in fact or reality because no such communication has ever taken place between them. “We abhor Governor Lamido’s descent to the unscrupulous, reckless and thoughtless peddling of arrant falsehood in a puerile effort to score cheap political points against President Jonathan for personal and sectional political gains. “If, as he claims, Alhaji Lamido has credible information about a minister receiving the said amount as bribe, he should publicly name the minister involved without delay and provide evidence to support his allegation. “In the event that he is unable to do so, he should be prepared to offer an unreserved apology to the President and Nigerians for his unwarranted and unjust effort to denigrate, disparage and malign the President and the Federal Government. “While the Jonathan Presidency will continue to make corrupt public officials answerable for their actions, it will not succumb to harassment and blackmail by self- seeking politicians jostling for personal advantage.” Source: www.punchng.com/news/250m-bribery-claim-lamido-lied-against-me-jonathan/ |
Pandemonium broke out in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, when four students were reportedly injured as some students of Baptist High School, Jaleymi, Osogbo engaged in a bloody fight with some secondary school students from another school in town. Though the cause of the clash was unknown as of the time of filing this report, eyewitness informed Saturday Tribune that the clash lasted for almost two hours before operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) could restore order in the area. However, some teachers, who pleaded anonymity hinted that clash was precipitated by rivalry between two cult groups. Sources informed our correspondent that some male pupils armed with machetes and other weapons invaded the school in the morning and engaged the male students of the school in a clash which eventually culminated in the sudden closure of the school. When Saturday Tribune visited the school premises on Friday, students were spotted trooping out of the school enmasse before the official closing time with some parents rushing to the school to take home their children. Meanwhile, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and policemen were deployed to the school to restore peace so as to prevent the development from degenerating into a complete breakdown of law and order. Some of the witnesses said four students were injured while the clash lasted, but security agencies were able to arrest two male pupils and two female pupils. However, some of the students and residents around the school contended that those arrested were not the ones involved in the clash. When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Mr. Ayo Olowe, confirmed the incident, explaining that the situation was put under control through the prompt response from the men of the Source: www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/news-headlines/item/26435-4-injured-as-secondary-school-students-engage-in-free-for-all-in-osun.html |
Nigeria host Ethiopia in the return leg 2014 World Cup playoff in Calabar on Saturday. With the Super Eagles heading into the encounter with a 2-1 advantage courtesy of Emmanuel Emenike’s brace in the first leg in Addis Ababa on October 13, the Walya Antelopes would appear to have a little chance in beating the African champions to reach the World Cup in Brazil, but the North-East Africans who must win by at least 2-0 to book their ticket insist they can upset the form book. Walya Antelopes coach Sewnet Bishaw, captain Degu Debebe, midfielder Addis Hintsa and defender Butako Abebaw maintain they have the quality to pick up the right result at the UJ Esuene Stadium and called on Ethiopians not to lose hope. Bishaw believes the presence of South Africa-based striker Getaneh Kebede, who missed the first leg at Addis Ababa National Stadium, will propel his team to victory. “To be honest, the presence of an experienced striker like Getaneh will have an impact in the second leg,” Cafonline quoted him as saying during the week. “But we have to be very careful not to give too much space for their strikers. “We have to bear in mind that they got the 2-1 advantage in the first leg after we did not close down space they rarely got in the 90 minutes. “In any case the result of a football match is determined at the end of the 90 minutes. We are ready to challenge them until the end.” Debebe warned the Eagles not to underestimate the Walya Antelopes, saying they would regret if they take victory for granted. “We will give our best and whatever result in Calabar we will accept it but most importantly we are all hoping to upset the form book,” Debebe told supersport.com. “We might have lost to Nigeria at home but I always believe with hard work and God on our side we can upset the form book in Nigeria as nothing is impossible,” Abebaw said. Sudan-based Hinsta urged the team to avoid the mistakes that led to their defeat on home soil. He insisted the Eagles are beatable and asked the team to fire on all cylinders during the game. “It will be a tough match and no one should expect an easy ride. We may be the underdogs in this match but Nigeria should expect a good fight at their hands for the entire 90 minutes,” Hinsta said. “We have always dreamed of being at the World Cup and though our dreams were dented at home I believe it’s not over until the fat lady sings.” Bishaw said his players must not be afraid to face the Nigerians, saying they could return home with the ticket to the World Cup if they overcome pressure. He said, “In the very beginning we set ourselves a goal, which was to qualify for the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup. To achieve that goal we have had to work very hard and that was our plan. We are training everyday and night to achieve our goal. We have 90 minutes more, and we will fight to the maximum. And I am confident we will qualify.” Source: www.punchng.com/sports/well-stop-eagles-flight-to-brazil-ethiopia/ |
Displaced landowners in Enugu State have threatened to storm the Enugu International Airport and seize materials meant for the conduct of the Anambra State governorship election on Saturday (today). They said they resolved to take the action because the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria failed to pay them compensation for acquiring their land. The landowners are operating on the platform of Airport Hillview and Layout Landlords Association, Enugu State. A statement by the publicity secretary of the group, Mr. Emmanuel Ivuanyi, on Thursday, faulted FAAN for not paying compensations to affected landowners. Mostly indigenes of Anambra State, the landowners made available a notice of the threats to our correspondents in Enugu and Awka, on Thursday. According to them, they were promised compensation when the land was acquired in 2009 by the Federal Government for the expansion and remodelling of the airport to international status. They, however, said that since then, they had yet to receive any form of compensation from FAAN. Saturday PUNCH learnt that 11 of the landowners who started the fight for compensation had died. One of the landowners, Mr. Emmanuel Chukwurah, said they would, in their thousands, besiege the airport very early today (Saturday) and ensure that sensitive materials for the Anambra governorship election do not leave the airport. “We are prepared to die for this, so no amount of security confrontation will hinder our action,” said Chukwurah.” Source: www.punchng.com/news/well-seize-anambra-election-materials-landowners/ |

Fani-Kayode urges Nigerians to kick out Jonathan in 2015 Posted by: Adekunle Jimoh, Ilorin in News 36 mins ago A former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has urged Nigerians to team up and kick out the Goodluck Jonathan administration in the 2015 general elections. The former minster addressed reporters yesterday at the Ilorin International Airport, the Kwara State capital, after attending the first remembrance anniversary of the strong man of Kwara politics, Dr Sola Saraki. He said: “My views are clearly well known about President Jonathan’s administration. There is no point in inflaming passion. They are very sensitive. If you say anything negative about them, they get upset and begin to haul abuses. “But let me give you straight: this is probably one of the worst governments this country has ever known in terms of corruption and infrastructural provision. I think it is incumbent on every right-thinking Nigerian, whether in the G-7, the New Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other party, to get them out of office. That is our objective.” On the designation of Boko Haram as a terrorist group, the former minister said: “The United States of America’s designation of Boko Haram as a terrorist group is long overdue. They should have done that before 7,000 Nigerians were killed. “One wonders why it took the Barack Obama administration so long; probably because our government is not fighting Boko Haram strongly enough. We have complained about this in the last two years. Perhaps, if our government had made the effort to encourage the Americans to take this step as far back as a year or two ago, we would have saved many lives. “But we have lost 7,000 Nigerians in the last two years because of the weakness of our government and because the Americans refused to do the right thing and designate the group as a terrorist organisation. “I am glad they have done it now. Let’s hope things will change.” Source: www.thenationonlineng.net/new/fani-kayode-urges-nigerians-kick-jonathan-2015/ |

Borno Christians Accuse Governor Shettima Of Negligence, Say Boko Haram Sacked 46 Villages, 14,000 Displaced A group of indigenous Christians of Borno State under the auspices of Gwoza Christian Community Association (GCCA), has accused Governor Kashim Shettima of negligence concerning Boko Haram attacks on their communities in which 46 villages were sacked and their areas made the operational headquarters of the insurgency. In an open letter to Shettima signed by its contact man, Elder Ayuba J. Bassa, the group gave detailed analyses of their situation, saying that over 14,000 of their members have been displaced into neighboring states and the Republic of Cameroon. They complained that their children are dying of malnutrition and other health cases in their hideouts. Giving a detailed background of their situation, the group said that the governor was unaware, the Christians in Gwoza are deeply unhappy about the non-action of his government in response to their condition. They said they did not really believe governor was being updated about what is actually going on by their representatives on his cabinet or by those in the House of Assembly. “A total of 618 families (not individuals) have been displaced from their houses to various places in Nigeria as well as in places in Cameroon. There were a total of 46 Churches that have been burnt and destroyed while a total of 541 houses were also burnt and destroyed. As at 23/10/2013, a total of 46 villages were completely displaced; while a total of 108 houses have been vandalized, some of these houses are being occupied by the insurgents atop the mountain hills. More of concern is the plight of 68 widows whose husbands were either shot or slaughtered in front of their family members. We have full documentation of these atrocities against Christians and yet your Deputy Governor during his two visits to the area has never found time to even commiserate with the Christians, but were deliberately avoided.” Continuing, the villagers asked whether they are perhaps not being considered to be Borno State citizens. “Shops destroyed at Kirawa were given N3million, we also reliably informed that the sum of twenty five million naira (N25,000,000.00) was also given to the butchers from Gwoza at the Maiduguri Abbattoir. Everyone knows that the Abattoir is the breeding ground of the insurgency activities most of whom have gone back to Gwoza as sponsored insurgents. They have now made the mountain hills their headquarters. While the whole lot of over 13 to 14 thousand Christians are homeless and are refugees without basic needs after fleeing their homes. Are we bastards that deserve not an iota of attention?” The group noted that resistance but for its respect for constituted authority, its members have what it takes to resist the insurgents. “We have the capacity to retaliate even more devastatingly, but two wrongs do not make a right,” the letter said. “When peace was visible especially at Bayan Dutse and Barawa District in particular, confirmed information reached us that the civilian JTF was sponsored to the area in order to retaliate the actions of the army JTF on innocent civilian Christians of Barawa. A list of eighteen (18) persons was given to them out of which they succeeded in apprehending four (4) including a former vice Chairman of Gwoza Local Govt Area: To date no one has been able to see them. This was politically motivated under the cover of insurgent activities- branding them as Boko - Haram. That Civilian JTF that underwent that infamous mission were themselves Boko-Haram from the Maiduguri Abbattoir who actually ran away to Maiduguri when the JTF came to Barawa in April this year. In order to see them as legitimate Civilian JTF, some of them were told to adopt Christian names such as Bitrus, Yohanna, etc instead of their Muslim names. We have no regrets to state categorically before you that one key elected politician from the area and also the district head comes from the current headquarters of Boko- Haram on the Gwoza hills at Gwavaka in Ghwa`a. May be you may like to hear that on 29th September, 2013, two days to independence day, Boko- Haram village-Head was turbaned in the area where four cows were slaughtered in celebrations. It was the cows of the displaced Christians. The group warned that in the circumstances, if pushed to the wall, we will have to actually defend ourselves and that is not a threat because every human being has the instinct to survive. “It is not because we don't have that capacity of retaliation or taking our plight for solutions elsewhere,” they said. “We do have them such as the ICC, US Congress, International Development Agencies, International Reconciliatory Agencies, Human Rights, International Religious Freedom Reports, Inter-faith Mediation Centre and above all the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” Presenting statistics of their displaced members, and as well the villages that were sacked by the sect, they stressed, “we really have reasons to complain bitterly as if we are aliens in Borno State and every sane minded human being can attest to our plight. We registered this Association to actually forestall the administrative bottle necks of CAN in tackling our internal issues which may be peculiar to us. But we keep in close contact with CAN because our Association is not an alternative to CAN. We are in the full picture and knowledge of our Christian brothers and sisters that are scattered as refugees which are currently as follows: * Mokolo - Cameroun - Over 3,000 * Galma - Cameroun - Over 2,000 * Limankara - 202 * Madagali in Adamawa State - 2050 * Gulak in Adamawa State - 800 * Michika in Adamawa State - 1865 * Askira in Borno State - 410 * Uba in Borno State - 743 * Mubi in Adamawa State - 273 * Ngoshe Sama - 223 * Yola in Adamawa State - 270 * Jalingo in Taraba State - 190 * Lagos in Lagos State - 428 * Abuja in the FCT - 1021 The group gave the names of villages in which Christian refugees were chased out as follows: Ghraza, Hduwe, Tacha, Gudule, Gathaghure, Hembe, Kunde, Jiga, Ghwa 'a-klala, Gwavaka, Sabon Gari Kunde, Chebe-Chebe, Pege Barawa, Angwan Lawan, Vireke, Koghum, Kamba, Kwatara, Wala, Ashigashiya, Gava-west, Gileri, Sasawa, Bita, Dangalang, Ungwan Dambe, Yamtake, Valengede, Bla waziri, Bla abba, Gatha Musa, Gatha chairman, Gobara, Barawa, Uvaha, Gidan Block, Sabon gari zalidva, Patawe, Amdaga, Shiya-dawe, Dure, Hudimca, and Ghufure. “For goodness-sake how can a leader allow such large number of villages to be left vacant?” SaharaReporters has not been able to reach the office of the Governor for comment.
