The Rivers’ Peoples Forum (RPF) has stated that the Presidency should be held responsible, if any harm befalls Governor Rotimi Amaechi. The group, a leading socio-political organisation of all Rivers people, both at home and in the Diaspora, also declared that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan was behind the many political travails of Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF). RPF, through its president, Charles Bekwele, yesterday in Port Harcourt, after an executive meeting, strongly condemned Thursday evening’s police blockade of the Forces Avenue, the road leading to the Government House, with the governor’s convoy forced to take a longer route. The forum described the blockade as one attack too many on the person and office of the governor of Rivers state. However, the Peoples Democratic Party has faulted the claims saying the allegation was supported by a concocted video footage on the internet was a calculated ploy to further smear the name of the Police Commissioner Mbu Joseph Mbu whom he (Amaechi) has continued to demand his removal from the state. The party, in a statement by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser on media to the State Chairman Felix Obuah, explained that Amaechi “in his usual characteristic only intended to win public sympathy as there was no reason for his choice of that route at the period when there are several access roads, some of which are direct and smoother leading to the Government House.” But RPF said it was shameful and a big insult on the sensibilities of Nigerians, the reaction of the Bamanga Tukur-led faction of the PDP on the intimidation and embarrassment of the Rivers governor by the Mbu-led police. The forum stated that: “This current attack on the office and person of the Governor of Rivers State is one attack too many. They have grounded the official plane of the Rivers State Government. They have withdrawn some of Amaechi’s security aides, thereby exposing the governor to harm and danger. All these are being orchestrated by certain interests within the Presidency. The Presidency has been consistent in its harassment, intimidation and attack.” It claimed that all these were being done because of 2015 adding, “They (Presidency) believe Amaechi will not support President Jonathan’s 2015 election. The Presidency must stop using the apparatus of state to harass, intimidate and attack an elected governor.” It called on Nigerians and the international community to be alert, adding, “if any harm befalls Governor Amaechi, the Presidency should be held responsible.” It wondered how the country’s fund was being used to hound an elected official. It observed that, “It is totally irresponsible, repressive, undemocratic, tyrannical and condemnable. We are not in a military dictatorship, a jackboot regime. It is against the tenets and principles of our constitution. These interests in the Presidency must be told in clear terms that the country does not belong to the Presidency, but to all of us in the federation. The Presidency must stop using the police, the aviation ministry and any other institution or agency of state to harass and attack Amaechi.” The Forum said if the Presidency had any disagreement with the governor, it should be resolved politically rather than dragging the institutions of state into political disagreements within the party. A police corporal attached to Geshua Division of the Yobe State, on Friday, shot an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Soji Elegbede, to death over a feud involving the corporal and his girlfriend. A police source told Saturday Tribune that the incident occurred at about 9.00 a.m. The corporal, whose name was given as Andrawusu Bitrus, reportedly fired 10 rounds from his AK 47 rifle while the deceased stood in the charge room of the division, killing him instantly. Bitrus was said to have been disarmed immediately and arrested. It was gathered that the corporal had been having issues with his lover, who he was having an affair with after abandoning his wife with six children. The girlfriend was reported to have been visiting the police station where Bitrus worked and the Divisional Police Officer had tried intervening in the matter. When the lady visited again on Friday, the DPO was reportedly on casual leave and ASP Elegbede, as the most senior officer and the administrative officer, advised the lovers to try and settle their differences amicably at home. As the woman made to leave with the driver who brought her, Corporal Bitrus allegedly corked his gun and ordered the duo to freeze. The deceased was said to have gone to the charge room where he gave the order that the corporal be defaulted for corking his gun at civilians. Bitrus reportedly went to him in the charge room and shot and killed him. The remains of the officer have been deposited in the morgue at the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru. A source told Saturday Tribune that the deceased joined the Nigeria Police about two years ago as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and just got married less than six months ago. He was said to be an indigene of Abeokuta, Ogun State. Source: www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/item/20433-corporal-kills-asp,-threatens-to-shoot-girlfriend.html |
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said that measures taken by his administration have resulted in a significant reduction in the occurrence of terrorist attacks in the country. Speaking while receiving the outgoing representative of the delegation of the European Union (EU) to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. David Mac Rae, in his office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the president, however, said his administration would keep on doing everything possible to further enhance security in all parts of the country. “Boko Haram is being progressively weakened, but we are not (relenting). We will continue to do everything possible to achieve greater security for all who reside within our borders.” While stressing that there are many positive things happening in the country, Jonathan said his government would continue to do its best to correct negative perceptions about the country, such as the notion of widespread insecurity and corruption. He welcomed the declaration by the outgoing ambassador that he had recently traveled to the Niger Delta and some Northern states and found people there going about their normal lives and businesses without fear. He urged him to assist in correcting current misconceptions about Nigeria by taking that positive message to the European Union and the rest of the world. He commended the European Union for its past and ongoing support towards improving the electoral process in Nigeria. Jonathan told the EU envoy that Nigeria would act to facilitate the early conclusion of a partnership agreement between ECOWAS and the European Union. People get married for different reasons. While some seek companionship in marriage, many go into marriage for procreation. For couples who look forward to having children immediately after marriage, being declared ‘infertile’ by experts is like a death sentence.http://www.punchng.com/news/fertility-clinics-lagosians-make-money-selling-sperm-for-n50000/ |

There was mayhem at the Seme border area of Lagos State on Thursday after a 35-year-old man, Saturday Joel, was shot by officials of the Nigerian Customs Service. Eyewitnesses said Joel was hit by a stray bullet while some customs officers were trying to apprehend a motorist who was smuggling a red Volkswagen bus from Benin Republic into Nigeria. It was learnt that after the shooting, some residents took to the streets in protest. The residents were said to have alleged that customs officials had killed at least three motorists this month under the pretext that they were smugglers. It was learnt that in the ensuing pandemonium, the customs officials stationed in the area fled. However, a Superintendent of Customs, identified as J. I Motojelu, was said to have been driving by at the time. PUNCH Metro learnt that in retaliation, the angry mob, led by a community leader, dragged the officer out of his Toyota Corolla car marked ABJ 663 DW, and killed him. It was learnt that the irate mob, also set the deceased officer's vehicle ablaze and set up bonfires at the centre of the road. The culprits were said to have used the opportunity to steal some items that had previously been seized by customs. A police source said, "Motojelu, who knew nothing about the incident was beaten to death. The mob opened a customs patrol van stationed nearby and took a G3 rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition kept inside it. They then set the vehicle ablaze." Sources told our correspondent that some customs officials and policemen later returned to the scene and fired shots to disperse the mob. Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq Fadipe, said his men attempted to put out the fire but they had to retreat because of the sporadic gunshots in the area. It was learnt that the victim had been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. But the NCS Public Relations Officer, Seme Command, Ernest Olattah, said in a statement that the officer was killed while on his way to attend a meeting at the command. He said, "We announce the gruesome killing of one of our senior officers by some smugglers in the Ashipa area of Seme around 9.50am on Thursday. The deceased officer, while in his official uniform, unarmed, and driving to the command's headquarters for a routine meeting, was accosted by a mob who forced him out of his vehicle. "Led by an identified chief of the community, the officer was murdered in cold blood, while his vehicle was set ablaze." The customs spokesman said efforts were on to apprehend the culprits adding that the customs had achieved many feats this year alone. He said NCS operatives, due to their uncompromising stance against smuggling and the protection the nation's economy, had come under series of attacks by smugglers and some unpatriotic elements that saw smuggling as their rights. The PRO said, "Customs Area Controller of Seme Border, Othman Abdu Saleh, has in collaboration with sister government agencies including the police, commenced moves to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book. The controller posits that this unfortunate incident will not deter operatives of the command under his watch from carrying out their lawful duties. ''This is indeed a sad day for us here in this command, but let me emphasised that we are not relenting in the discharge of our duty as we will not allow the darkness of criminality to dampen the light of our service to Nigeria." Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, told our correspondent on the telephone that seven suspects had been arrested, adding that they would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba. She said, "Joel is recuperating at Badagry General Hospital while the slain customs officer has been deposited at the mortuary." Okada! Drop me here. Wey my change? Abi you wan carry am move ni? •How far can the president go with his desperate mind of getting re-elected in 2015? •Paying militants(OPC) to cause havoc and disrupt SouthWest's peace by awarding them a N2b contract of securing pipelines. Is this the pipeline they want Nigerians to believe they are securing? •Involving in state(anambra) politics by secretly disqualifying the best candidate and the man of the people(professor Soludo) to guarantee his 2015 support from the state and imposing puppets on the good people of the state. •Fighting one of Nigeria's most competent and hard working governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state, just because he doesn't fall for his(jonathan) dubious antics and wanting to stand alone. Where 5 lawmakers successfully impeached a speaker in a house that has over 30 honorable(s). •Breaking down a forum(Nigeria governor's forum) into factions, a forum that has been existing before he knew anything close to politics. Where 16votes was greater than 19votes. ^^^ All these because of 2015!!! -Yet, the education sector is crumbling with federal and state universities lecturers on strike. -Health sector is write off, where governors and even the first lady need to fly out of the country to threat even malaria. -Oil theft at its peak. -taking loans allover the world to revive the locomotive rail system, that couldn't successfully move goods from Lagos to Kano/Kaduna(less than a thousand kilometers) And renovating existing airports which was never his idea, claiming to have achieved. -Yet Nigeria is the highest oil exporter in Africa. Pdp as spend over $600billion in the past 14 years? Tangible and imaginary achievements? 23.9% unemployment rate in 2011, spiraling upward and growing at 16% per year , ranked 153 out of 186 countries in the UN Human Development Index(Poverty Index), External Debt of $6.67billion, Lending rate of 22% and above, ranked 139 out of 176 countries in TI's corruption perception index. A party that has spent over $16billion to generate less than 5000megawatts of epileptic electricity. Mismanaged over N2trillion on fuel subsidy. A rising domestic debt profile, import dependent economy, phenomenally- parlours state of infrastructure etc. We all can see how PDP's culture of waste and. mediocrity has sustained a generation starved in the circle of poverty of hope, ideals and basic necessities of life.... |
