All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday, alerted voters in Anambra State to the creation of 1,973 extra polling units out of the existing 4,608 polling units in the state for the purpose of this Saturday’s governorship poll, bringing the total voting points to 6,581. The APC said this in a statement issued in Benin by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, declaring that the alert became necessary because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not educated voters on the extra polling units, a few days before the election. According to the party, such development could either disenfranchise many voters or enable them to play into the hands of those who were already perfecting their rigging strategies. The party said the need to alert voters was further heightened by the fact that the extra polling units together accounted for over 800,000 votes. Meanwhile, Afenifere chieftain and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) allegation that the PDP and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) planned to rig the Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State as laughable. He also said from the allegation made by the APC; “It is certain that the party must be planning to rig the election and the leadership of the PDP must not wish the allegation away.” In a release issued on Tuesday, Adeyeye, who said he was speaking from experience, added that; “Experience have shown that whatever the APC people accuse others of planning to do is what they are actually planning to do or are already doing.” “This allegation is not one that our leaders in the PDP should take with levity because we have seen in the past, especially during the 2009 governorship election in Ekiti State where the Action Congress (AC) people were alleging that PDP planned to cause violence during the election, but they were actually the ones that imported armed thugs and militants to the State. “It is on record that these same people who accused PDP of planning to rig the Ekiti State 2009 rerun election were the ones who destroy thousands of votes in Okemesi, Iro, Ijero, Ise and other towns in State, and also razed down the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ido/Osi Local Government. “It is therefore important that we draw the attention of our party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and other leaders of the party to the fact that the APC people must be the ones planning to rig the Anambra State governorship election, and were only trying to divert the attention of the public from their sinister plot.” While describing the APC as a party of deceitful politicians, Adeyeye said; “It is even interesting that they were alleging that both PDP and APGA planned to rig the Anambra election and one may want to ask whether PDP and APGA are fielding a joint candidate for the election.” Source: www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/news-headlines/item/26171-anambra-apc-alleges-creation-of-1,973-extra-polling-units.html |
How much does a country need to keep its busiest international airport from running like an oven? The Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has to be the hottest airport in the world. It is easily the hottest I have travelled through and I have been through quite a lot of airports. Even the Nairobi airport in Kenya that was engulfed by fire is not as hot as the MMIA. You should not even get started with comparing it with the airport in Cape Town or Johannesburg, South Africa. Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport, Accra may be small but it does not meet you with the repulsiveness the MMIA greets you with. Even the Eyadema airport in Togo has a better atmosphere. The Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport in Dakar, Senegal trumps ours by light years. This is speaking of African countries. We dare not try to compare with airports outside Africa. As soon as you descend from the plane to go through the immigration point, the feeling is as though you were being punished for daring to travel to Nigeria – if a foreigner – or you were being punished for daring to leave the country – if a Nigerian. The saddest part of this reality is that money is not the reason why we have an airport that makes us look like we are a people without shame. Or, are we?Source: www.punchng.com/opinion/the-shame-called-murtala-muhammed-international-airport/ |

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday announced a cash gift of N2m each for all the players of the nation’s Under-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, who won the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Soccer Championship on Friday in Abu Dhabi, United Emirates. The players, their handlers and key members of the Nigerian Supporters’ Club, according to the President, will also be honoured with national honours during the next award ceremony. Jonathan announced the rewards at a reception he held in honour of the players at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The President announced a N3m cash gift to the team’s Head Coach; the assistant coaches get N2.5m each; the team doctor, physiotherapist and team secretary get N500,000 each while the team technical officer, team coordinator, medical officers and the curator will get N300,000 each. Jonathan said with the gifts, he was keeping his earlier promise to the team when he charged them to go and conquer the world. Describing the cash gifts as token, the President encouraged state governments and members of the organised private sector to join the Federal Government in appreciating players, saying no amount of reward could be adequate for the young Nigerians. “The team, the handlers, the coaches and the officials including some key members of the supporters club and the Nigerian Football Federation will all be rewarded when we give national honours,” he said. The President said he was pleased to host and honour the players who he said by their outstanding performance had brought pride and honour to Nigeria and Africa. He said the players won fairly and convincingly, adding that the victory is for the whole of Africa. There is a campaign currently going on in Lagos State. Its drumbeat is beginning to reach a crescendo in recent times. As the race for the 2015 general elections gathers momentum, the question of who succeeds the incumbent governor, Babatunde Fashola, has become the subject of intense public speculation. The governor, who is on the final lap of his second term tenure, will quit office in 2015. Thus, it is not surprising that the debate of who replaces him will become the subject of public interest. The succession brouhaha in Lagos is not totally unexpected. Lagos, with a population of 25 million inhabitants, is perhaps the only Nigerian city with global acclaim. It has also over the years grown to be Nigeria’s most important state. Its massive internally generated revenue, about N17bn; a huge commercial and industrial base coupled with its being a former federal capital city make it a coveted state among the political elite in the country. That is why Lagos has been the theatre of fierce political battles–the struggle for its political dominance peaked since the return to democracy in 1999. More specifically, the state is still the scene of an ongoing political struggle between the Peoples Democratic Party and the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria now under the All Progressives Congress. The jostle for who becomes governor had also once witnessed intra-party rivalry that pitted one faction against the other. The importance of Lagos has ensured that it is continually in the eye of the storm with the Federal Government which would give anything to bring the state under its political control. Successive governments in Abuja have always sought to wrest control of the state from the “progressives” who have dominated political power since. In most cases, they have blocked policies embarked on by the state just to prove a political point or strangle it to submission. This points to the importance of Lagos in the national political equation. That is why it is not surprising that, once again, the race for Alausa is attracting attention, except that this time, it has taken a religious dimension. But I consider the present call by some Christians for a Christian governor strange and unprecedented. It is strange because it is curious that some so-called Christians in the state would seek to campaign for a Christian governor as if it is the sole determinant of good leadership. It is also unprecedented because this is the first time an attempt will be made by a religious body to consciously campaign that a governor emerges from their faith. The clamour first began not too long ago. It was brought into the public space by the Director of Civic and Political Affairs of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland of the Anglican Communion, Venerable Folarin Shobo, who asked Lagos residents to vote in a Christian as governor in 2015. Shobo said it was time for power to shift in the state. According to him, ‘’Lagos residents cannot afford to continue with the present political arrangement whereby political officers were largely people of a particular faith”. The cleric urged Christians in the state to change the political status quo. He said, “It is not fair to have a government that is largely tilted to people of a particular religion. Christians over the years have been magnanimous enough. We have worked for people who are not of our faith and we have supported them to be in government. It is now time for us to come out and take the bull by the horns’’. He reportedly lamented the situation where none of the five people being tipped to succeed Fashola come 2015 is a Christian. “Asking for a Christian governor in Lagos State at this time is not out of place. It is long overdue and it is time we began to do something about it,” Shobo’s position was re-echoed at another forum by a group called the Men Mission’s Union of New Jerusalem-City Baptist Church, Ejigbo, at a breakfast session with the Chairman of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Kehinde Bamigbetan, on the theme: Christians and Politics: A Personal Reflection. Bamigbetan debunked the allegation that neither the party nor its leaders is consciously sponsoring Muslim candidates. Then enter the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria Lagos branch. In a statement titled, “The Church and Governance of Lagos State”, Its chairman, one Apostle Alex Bamgbala, said Christians have supported the two Muslim administrations in the state since 1999 and it is only fair that they give room for their Christian counterparts to be elected in 2015. As the race for the Lagos top job gathers momentum, I am sure it will not be long before other Christians join this annoying and bizarre campaign. My take on this is simple. I consider the reason behind the Christian-for- governor disgraceful and odious. The campaign by these so-called Christian leaders is also dangerous, diversionary, hypocritical and inimical to peaceful co- existence of the state’s residents. It detracts from the real issues of governance. And there lies our problem as a country. I am a Christian and if you ask me, I do not give a hoot about the religion of the next governor. Neither has religion determined who gets my vote. Not in past elections and not in the future. For all I care, the next governor can be a traditionalist or even an atheist. What is important to me and for all residents is performance and pedigree. The position of the so-called Christians is immoral to me, and reprehensible at best. It is curious that they have chosen this time for their divisive and unpatriotic campaign. One would expect them to demand good government no matter who will rule Lagos. What Lagos needs is good governance. Lagos residents want improvement in all aspects of their lives. They want better inner city roads, effective transport services, good schools, improved health care services, more independent power projects and security of lives and property. So, what has religion got to do with these? Lagos needs the best man for the job. There are those who have applauded Fashola’s performance so far. Never for once has his religion been in contention. What these masquerading as religious leaders have failed to tell us is how Fashola’s performance have impacted on Muslim alone. What they have also failed to tell us is what other leadership qualities a Christian governor must possess other than just being a Christian. For them, Lagos needs a Christian governor even if the would-be candidate lacks the qualities. This attitude should be condemned by all Lagos residents. This is a dangerous trend that must not be allowed in a democracy. Not the least an enlightened state like Lagos. It is either they are acting in ignorance of the ignominious role religion can play in our national life or are being mischievous. Have they even forgotten that a political party has its own structure? Are they now saying that even when a candidate, who is Muslim emerges, he should be dropped for a Christian who is not in the ballot or who did not have the required number of votes to stand election? Christian leaders should be conscious of the role they play in the society. They should avoid stoking the embers of religious hatred by playing up one religion against the other. Playing on mass hysteria will further widen the schism that is threatening to tear us apart as a nation. They should encourage leaders to deliver on their electoral promises. A Christian governor is not a guarantee for good governance. This campaign is nonsensical and must stop. Source: www.punchng.com/opinion/2015-christian-or-muslim-governor-for-lagos/ |

APC leaders suspend visit to Amaechi as First Lady delays exit from PH •APC chartered flight not grounded - NCAA PLANS to receive the national leadership of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) by the Rivers state governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, was put on hold Monday due to the delayed travel plans of Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan. However, enthusiastic supporters of Governor Amaechi, from various parts of the state, who had trooped out in their tens of thousands to receive the visitors were denied access into the Port Harcourt International Airport by stern-looking, heavily armed security men, drawn across security formations. Nigerian Tribune gathered that the First Lady, who buried her adopted mother over the previous weekend, was billed to have left Port Harcourt for Abuja with an 11:40am flight, but was yet to leave the city as of 5.00 p.m. when the Nigerian Tribune left the airport. It was also gathered that the visiting leaders of the opposition party, who were reportedly visiting to woo the state governor to join their fold, had decided to delay their own flight, which was scheduled for between 1:30pm and 2:00 p.m., to allow Mrs Jonathan leave the city first so as to forestall any ugly incident. The change in travel plan of the visitors did not go down well with the hoard of supporters, who had waited several hours outside the gates of the airport to welcome them into the state. However, when contacted, National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the visit was postponed due to ‘problem of logistics and coordination’. Mohammed said, “We have postponed the visit till Tuesday because of certain logistics and coordination, it is not on the account of whether somebody travels or not. We are definitely sure that our supporters will still be at the airport and the streets of Port Harcourt to receive us today, despite the postponement.” But another source, close to the leadership of the APC, who spoke privately, said the decision of the visitors to defer their visit to Tuesday (today) was as a result of the First Lady’s inability to leave at her scheduled flight time. “Our leaders would have been here before now but when they learnt that the First Lady was leaving through the airport, they decided to hang on in Abuja until her flight leaves. They don’t want to have any confrontation with her supporters,” the source explained. Meanwhile, another huge crowd of supporters had gathered within the premises of the Rivers state Government House, waiting to welcome the visitors. Addressing the crowd in the Government House, Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Senator Magnus Abe as well as the leader of the Rivers state caucus in the National Assembly, Chief Andrew Uchendu, decried attempts by the Felix Obuah-led executive council of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to malign Amaechi over the planned visit of the APC leaders to the state. According to Abe, anybody who wants to win Rivers State must court Amaechi because he is the leader that the people of the state know and trust. Meanwhile, news of the grounding of a chartered plane conveying some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Port Harcourt at the Abuja airport. According to information gathered, the plane was stopped from flying by the aviation agencies for not having proper documentation and passengers’ manifest in line with aviation safety rules. The plane chartered by the APC stalwarts according to a source in one of the agencies who did not want to be quoted declared that the plane was not grounded but the pilot was asked to identify passengers on board and provide proper documentation. “As soon as they complied with the safety directives, the plane was cleared for take off so nobody grounded any aircraft,” the source added. According to the source, the issue of declaring the identity of those on board and providing proper documentations is aviation safety rule not peculiar to Nigeria and must be obeyed especially at this critical stage when the country is going through security challenges. He, however, said this should not be misconstrued as political vendetta but purely aviation safety regulations. When contacted the Federal Airport Authorities of Nigeria (FAAN) spokesperson, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, in a text message said: “You need to find out from NCAA. FAAN does not ground planes.” The General Manager, Public Affairs, NCAA, Mr. Fan Ndubuoke, denied such incident at Abuja airport yesterday. When contacted on telephone, he said: “I don’t think any plane was grounded at any airport today. I’m not aware any of such thing happened and I don’t think any of such thing occurred. “Pilots are expected to file their manifest before any flight and they know what to do before takeoff, and if you don’t do it and your plane is delayed for one or two minutes, I don’t think that amounts to grounding of a plane or aircraft.” According to Ndubuoke, he had called Abuja to verify the grounding claims, adding: “I just called the people who should know and they have said that there was nothing of such at the airport.” He however directed this reporter to speak with the pilot who was in charge of the plane, if no procedural breaches were made by him. He explained that it is only when issues regarding declaration of the details in a manifest that a pilot can be given a start off. He said: “That does not in any way amount to grounding. “No plane was grounded today from my record and if anything of such happened they will inform me.” Source: www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/item/25571-apc-leaders-suspend-visit-to-amaechi-as-first-lady-delays-exit-from-ph-apc-chartered-flight-not-grounded-ncaa.html |

THERE was uproar in Ekiti State on Monday over the killing of a supporter of a member of the House of Representatives and governorship aspirant, Opeyemi Bamidele. The victim, one Mr. Foluso Ogundare of Emure Ekiti, died from gunshots received in the attack on members of Bamidele’s support group, Ekiti Bibiire Coalition, during a meeting at Ward 3 in Emure, in the Emure Local Government Area of the state. Ogundare died late on Sunday at the Federal Medical Centre, Ido Ekiti, where he was rushed after suspected political thugs attacked the EBC members. Another victim, Mrs. Beatrice Ige, was on Monday receiving treatment at the state university teaching hospital in Ado Ekiti, our correspondent reports. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Victor Babayemi (ASP), on Monday confirmed the attack and said the police had commenced investigation into the matter. “We found out that the attack happened during a village meeting at Emure on Sunday. But, I can’t confirm to you that it was a fight between groups within a political party or not. We are on the trail of the suspected killers,” Babayemi told our correspondent. A statement by Bamidele’s spokesman, Ahmed Salami read, “Two members of Ekiti Bibire Coalition were shot during an attack on members of the group in Emure Ekiti by some desperate elements and political appointees in broad day light. “In the process, two members of the group were shot at close range and in various parts of their bodies. Specifically, Foluso Ogundare was shot in the stomach and later died at about 10.25pm on Sunday night at Federal Medical Centre, Ido Ekiti while Mrs. Beatrice Ige was shot in the buttock. “We must place on record that this is one murder too many and it is suggestive of a high level of political desperation, intolerance and impunity. “As stakeholders, we recall that during the struggle for the actualisation of his mandate, Governor Fayemi said, ‘no blood of an Ekiti man is worth shedding.’ “He equally emphasised that he was not desperate to rule Ekiti. But with the current scenario characterising the politics of the state, one is constrained to believe the assertion in many quarters that all these were mere rhetoric”. Both Bamidele and Fayemi belong to the All Progressives Congress. But the APC in a statement also on Monday condemned the attack and accused members of the EBC of turning into bullies. The statement by the party’s Director of Publicity and Media, Segun Dipe, said, “The APC viewed the act as one of the bloodletting exercises, which the Michael Opeyemi Bamidele-led Bibiire Group has embarked on.” The statement, which defended the Fayemi administration, further read, “Some miscreants hiding under the name of Bibiire Group have turned themselves into bullies while jostling for relevance. In the particular occurrence at Emure Ekiti, two MOB factions were allegedly locked in supremacy contest. “One was led by one Supo Fakunle, a.k.a Olugeri; and the other led by Paul Awopetu, a.k.a Doki. They were allegedly fighting for the loot coming from MOB and his sponsors to whichever group emerged as superior.” Reacting to the incident, a governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the situation in the state had become worrisome and warned of imminent anarchy. Adeyeye, a former spokesman of the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, in a statement said, “There is a possibility of anarchy in Ekiti State if the police and other security agencies in the state fail to bring perpetrators of the killings to justice. “The State Governor, Kayode Fayemi; his party, the All Progressives Congress; and most importantly, the State Police Command must be blamed for the latest killing. “Therefore, if the police and other security agencies in the country do not want anarchy in Ekiti State, those who murdered Foluso Ogundare in Emure-Ekiti must be arrested, prosecuted and punished.” Source: www.punchng.com/news/uproar-in-ekiti-over-killing-of-bamideles-supporter/ |

THE Director-General of National Biotechnical Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr Saidu Mohammed, has said the solar eclipse, which will occur on November 3, will come with mild darkness across the 36 states of the federation. The Director-General, who made this known during a press briefing, last Thursday in Abuja, also advised Nigerians to remain calm, as the eclipse would not affect satellite communications or air services. The eclipse, however, will be characterised by a flush of sunlight and mild darkness during its peak. The agency has, therefore, made available at its headquarters, sunglasses, which will serve as filters for the effect of the sun. Dr Mohammed added that: “It will be like any other day, but its effect will be felt at its peak. It is recommended you wear sunglasses. There is no need to panic,” he concluded. Earlier in his presentation, the Director of Centre for Astronomy, University of Nsukka, Professor Felix Okpara, who outlined the various times of the eclipse across the nation said, in Abuja, the eclipse will begin by 1:03 p.m. It will be at its maximum by 2.40 p.m and it will end by 4.03 p m in the evening. In Lagos, it will begin by 12.50 p.m, its maximum level will take place by 2.40 p.m and end by 4.01p.m. In Ibadan, the eclipse will start by 12.52 p.m, the maximum level will be witnessed by 2.32 p.m and it will end 4.01 p.m. In Port Harcourt, the eclipse will begin by 1.03 p.m, its maximum will be experienced by 2.43 p.m and by 4.09 p.m, it will end. In Uyo, the eclipse will begin by 1.06 p.m, its maximum will be experienced by 2.45 p.m and by 4.10 p.m, it will end. In Enugu, the eclipse will begin by 1.04 p.m, its maximum will be experienced by 2.43 p.m and by 4.07 p.m, it will end and in Kano, the eclipse will begin by 1.07 p.m, its maximum will be experienced by 2.40 p.m and by 4.01 p.m, it will end. An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object/objects is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer as seen from the earth. Solar eclipse was previously recorded in Nigeria concurrently in 1945, 1959, 2001 and 2006. Source: www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/item/25104-solar-eclipse-occurs-on-sunday.html |

The supervising Minister of Education, Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, has declared that his political structure, the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI) has weakened the Powers of Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi. This is even as the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Felix Obuah, has stated that about six commissioners in Amaechi’s government had declared interest to join the GDI. Wike and Obuah made the statements yesterday during the inauguration of executives and wards officials of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area chapter of GDI, held in Port Harcourt. In his address, Wike stated that Governor Amaechi had become a complainant by appearing before the Human Rights Commission. He said further that if not for the doggedness of the group, nobody could challenge the governor, adding that before, Amaechi could easily order a Commissioner of Police to arrest somebody and charge him for cultism, but that has stopped. “In fact, if for nothing, they have succeeded for the first time in the history of this country, where you have pushed a governor to now become a complainant in the Human Rights Commission. “If for nothing, the governor has now turned to a complainant; the governor, would tell a Commissioner of Police to arrest and charge people for cultism. He is, today, complaining to Human Rights Commission. “If for nothing, he should go home and ask God ‘is it how this world is? That, because of the challenge we are giving to them now, they are now calling everybody and giving fictitious names. “If not for what you are doing, nobody would talk to anybody; nobody would even know anybody is there. They turned themselves to demi-gods. Today, power has returned to the people and you have the power,” Wike declared. The supervising Education Minister pointed out the the clamour for the withdrawal from the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, was because he failed to take order from them. THE caucus meeting of the Baraje faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on whether the group should quit the mainstream PDP or cross to any of the existing or new political parties had been held. The communique of the group and feelers from the meeting indicated that various interests are still in disagreement on the push by some members that they should quit the PDP and move to the All Progressives Congress. Due to lack of agreement the meeting resolved to set up a contact and mobilisation committee to further explore all options before the group in case the ongoing peace talks with the main PDP fails. Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had listed four options such as joining APC, continuing with PDP, joining a weak existing political party such as the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) and forming their own political party. In a communique signed by the group’s publicity chief, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the meeting set up the committee with a mandate “to explore other options available to the party should the dialogue with President Jonathan fails to yield any positive result for its future political activity as the vision and mission of the party cannot be derailed by any force or group of people no matter the ploys and plots. “The Committee is expected also to liaise with the new five other PDP governors and other leaders that have indicated interest to join the group and to submit their report during the next meeting of the caucus that will hold in a week’s time to ascertain how these distinguished new members would be received by the party,” the statement said. The statement expressed worries that peace meetings so far held with President Jonathan and mainstream PDP have not yielded any positive results, affirming that “all the issues we raised and presented through the General Olusegun Obasanjo-led Elders Committee to President Jonathan and his people have been bluntly turned down. “The meeting noted with sadness that instead of President Jonathan to critically examine and act on some of the issues we raised, our members in various states of the federation are being persecuted, humiliated through the unfair use of state powers, arrested and put into prison as is the case in Baylesa and Gombe states just to demonstrate its disdain for peace and plot to destroy the party,” the group alleged. The meeting also accused Alhaji Bamanga Tukur of “setting up parallel chapters in states where he has nobody backing him to ensure that PDP is destroyed without any remedy,” while also lamenting that none of its demands have been met. “Some of the demands presented by our governors include the need to reverse the impunity in Rivers State, where a sitting governor was suspended from the party against the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the PDP constitution, and refusing to uphold the result of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum election that saw Governor Amaechi winning 19 to 16 votes against Governor Jang. “Others include our request for the removal of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as our party National Chairman knowing his flawed election as our party Chairman, and ending the impunity in Adamawa State, among other demands that will put PDP in a strong position as a political party but for reasons not to clear to some of us failed to receive the blessing of Mr. President,” the communique noted. The group particularly lamented continuous harassment and molestation of its leaders nationwide, condemning “the deployment of the police to the vicinity of the Sokoto Governor’s Lodge, Abuja, with a view to scuttling the caucus meeting, not knowing that the Sokoto Governor’s Lodge was used as a decoy since we’re well aware of the evil mentality of our opponents. Despite the lack of results from the peace moves, the communique said the meeting concluded that” by urging our governors to continue to pursue peace within the party in the hope that President Jonathan and Tukur’s faction would stop the persecution of the party faithful and allow common reason to prevail. New PDP chieftains that attended the meeting according to the communique included Governors Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano); Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto); Murtala Nyako (Adamawa); Chibuike Amaechi (Rivers); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); former governors Adamu Aliero (Kebbi State); Bukola Saraki (Kwara State); Danjuma Goje (Gombe State); and Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa State). Others included the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje; Deputy Chairman Sam Sam Jaja; National Secretary Olagunsoye Oyinlola; and Vice-Chairman, North-West, Ibrahim Kazuare, among others. The excuse by the Governors of Kwara and Niger States to be absent from the meeting was tabled and accepted. Next of kin could best be described as someone’s closest living relative. A spouse should naturally be the next of kin to his/her partner. But the society has changed. These days, some people prefer having their children as their next of kin. Of course, they have their reasons. Some Nigerians express their preference. It will change after marriage Oyin Damola My dad, at the moment, is my next of kin. But when I get married, I will automatically change it to be my husband. But when we start having children, I think one of my kids will eventually become my next of kin. First my mum, then my wife Lanre Odukoya For now, my mother is my next of kin. I will be getting married soon and thereafter, my wife will become my next of kin. Even when I have kids, I don’t think I will make any of them the next of kin, my wife will remain my next of kin. The closest person to me, who carries my pains and joy, is my wife. My mum and sisters will do Chioma Ogwuegbu It actually depends on what transaction is involved. I usually make my mother or any of my sisters my next of kin. However, when my daughter gets old enough, I will also use her as one. I use them because I trust them completely and I am confident that when the need arises, they will take decisions on my behalf that will be in my best interest. She inherits my assets and debts Yemi Oladeinde Ordinarily, our next of kin should be our wives but most men prefer choosing their kids. From my interactions with friends both old and young, I found out that many men decide to choose their children as their next of kin because most women tend to leave their husbands. They believe that women can change at any moment and that means the property will go into wrong hands. For me, however, my wife is my next of kin. If I have assets, she inherits them and if I have debts, she inherits them as well. I knew my wife before the children came along. My child it is! Aminat Balogun Your child will always be your child, as such, my next of kin is my child. I have not filled any form in recent times that will require me to state my next of kin. However, I will still use my child. Son takes over from wife Gbenga Bada My son became my next of kin after he was born. Initially, his mother was my next of kin. I changed it to my son because in case I die now (God forbid), my wife is still very young and can remarry and she will share my sweat and finances with a totally different man, who will possibly squander the fortunes or even swindle her. Hubby will take over from my mother Ngozi Asogwa Since I’m not married, my next of kin is my mother. I chose her because she is the closest to me. She is today my source of joy. However, as soon as I get married, the template will change. In this case, my husband will automatically become my next-of-kin. This is because if anything should happen to me (God forbid), he will be the one that will take care of our family. No doubt, it’s my son! Sony Neme My next of kin is certainly my son. I have learnt the hard lessons of life; otherwise, my wife should have been my next of kin. My wife can leave me but my son can never leave me. As such, it is only proper for me to make my son my next of kin. You know your children and even when they are young, you already know who among them you will wish to succeed you. My wife doesn’t have to feel bad that my son is my next of kin. You get what you deserve; you certainly will not get what you don’t deserve. The children get my votes Ope Ogunjimi My children are my next of kin. I and my husband agreed that our kids would be the next of kin. We decided that anything we would do in the family would be in the name of the children. One can never tell what will happen in future. You might think the husband will leave the planet first and you find out that the wife may even leave first. If everything is done in the name of the kids, they will not suffer. My husband had that experience and he wouldn’t want his kids to suffer the way he did. I choose my child over my wife Idowu Samuel My child is my next of kin. Ordinarily, you would expect me to choose my wife but we are all human beings. Anything may happen tomorrow and my wife may walk away. But my child will always be my child no matter what happens.
