To the person asking why we are obsessed about lagos, it was Nigeria's capital for over 100 years and still holds several national offices and institutions, which means one thing must bring an upward mobile Nigerian to lagos one dey.
Every time I come into nigeria, I have to come through lagos or pay double to land directly in enugu, so we all have stake in Lagos, it's not a Yoruba state, even though you guys want to pocket it.

The guy naming what my state doesn't have, my state doesn't have skyscrapers but it has places that look as beautiful as the most beautiful parts of lagos and it has infrastructure that it needs. European cities dont have skyscrapers but still look better than most cities.
Our airport wasn't built by federal government but by us, unlike lagos. Why would enugu need metro? We are functioning well and doing so with far less money than lagos.

Ojukwu and Gowon met and agreed in Aburi on how to proceed only for Gowon to renegade because according to him, Ojukwu called a press conference before him. Relocating abroad has never been for the rich and poor. It is the middle class guys like John are the ones relocating.
What the rich guys do is to maintain one leg abroad but not to permanently live there. They can get foreign passport to aid their travels, access better healthcare in those countries, education for their kids etc but a middle class person can't do that so what do they do? They migrate.

well to be fair, I know a fair bit of market men and women, bus drivers, bricklayers and artisans who own their own homes and cars in enugu plus a second home in their villages (some of which are still in the same enugu state). I'm sure you know a few too. They are not rich, just lower middle class.
Upper middle class would be people earning at least 5 million but less than 10 million a month.
Rich should be above 10 million a month. So in essence, many lower middle class people in Nigeria own their own homes.
The problem is that a huge percentage (70%) of Nigerians are actually poor (That would be people who earn less than 300k a month today.)

Have you bought a house in Lagos before? Do you know how much it takes to buy a 3 bedroom terraced duplex? In common Ogudu, you can't buy anything reasonable with less than 200m naira not to talk of high brow areas of Lagos.

John is a brilliant Nigerian, graduated and got a job in Lagos where he earns 1m naira a month. Let's assume John will rely on his salary only, no corruption involvement to make extra money. Let's assume John will save 10m a year from his salary, how many years will John save up to 200m to buy a house in Ogudu? By the time he saves that amount the houses prices have jumped to 300m.
So what option does John have to buy a house in Lagos where he lives and work since he doesn't want to rent forever? Start looking for corrupt ways to enrich himself to make money faster, looking for somebody to use for rituals to make money, becoming a politician etc. With his legitimate income, he can never own a property in Lagos, this is why there is too much corruption and ritual killings in Nigeria.

However, if John lives abroad, the system tells John, get 5% of the cost of the house, we will give you mortgage to buy it. Pay the balance for 20 or 25 years. John buys the house and start enjoying it immediately while he keeps paying the balance. Each month John pays his mortgage, he reduces the amount he owes on the house. If after 5 years or anytime John gets tired of the house, he can sell it back and pay back the remaining balance he is owing on the house. Luckily for him, in most cases, the house he bought for 200m would have appreciated to like 210m after 5 years so he makes some good profit on the house.

So you can see that John can actually enjoy a better life without being rich or putting his hands into corruption or bad things to make crazy money. With this, there is less corruption in the society, nothing like ritual killings or desperation to make millions. Everybody benefits both rich and poor.
But Nigeria tells people like John to get rich or die trying, there is no in-between. The result is why our society is what it is today.

Most Nigerians abroad are common and average middle class Nigerians like your daily workers in Lagos. So if an average worker in Lagos can't cough out like 200m to buy a house outright in Lagos, how do you expect an average worker abroad to cough out hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy a house outright?

However you miss a few things.
1. The post was about upper class Nigerians throwing in the towel to move abroad because they believe 'naija don cast'. They may end up living a life below the standard they left behind. It doesn't include John. Someone earning 1m today is similar to someone who was earning 250k in 2015. They are not upper class Nigerians.

2. There are mortgage loans in Nigeria too. The criteria is different from abroad but it is there and thousands of Nigerians who know are using it.

3. Lagos is not the only city in Nigeria. There are at least 37 other cities. Most are cheaper than lagos. Less than 12% of Nigerians live in Lagos. 200 million duplex in enugu is a mansion.

Interest rates and credit risk means the house you were sold 1 million cad would end up costing you over 1.3 million cad when paying instalments.

The only time I suggest credit is credit cards. The interest rate is low and the soft loan comes in handy and increases your credit score once you pay. But if you can afford to pay outright, always choose that option, chances are you are getting it cheaper

With your 4 million, you are earning almost 50 million a year. A nice duplex in Enugu can be as cheap as 100 million. Your 2 years salary can get you a duplex.
A duplex in Canada is about 1 million cad. Your 120k cad a year will need to be saved for about 9 years to get you the same duplex.

Then there is the issue of community. You have a social life in Nigeria. It comes easy. In Canada, you have to make extra effort to have what resembles a social life.

Most successful Nigerians lived abroad for a while and came back. Think on it if you are a big person in Nigeria currently. The grass is not greener on the other side
