Politics › 2019: PDP May Merge With Other Parties To Defeat APC - Uche Secondus Reveals by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:46pm On Apr 20, 2018
The National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, made this known at an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party on Thursday in Abuja.

Mr Secondus said that the consultation with the groups was useful, and that in coming days, a broader platform would be raised to wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said that PDP had taken it upon itself as the leading opposition party to broaden its scope, open its doors and allow ideas to flow in for a more robust democratic process.

“Our consultations have taken us to meet with various interest groups, who are willing to do business with us.

“I can report to you that it has been very fruitful.

“We expect in the coming days to have a broader political family, working hard to rescue this democracy and our beloved country from the hands of APC.”

He hinted that all former presidents and former leaders of Nigeria were in unison to make sure that in 2019 a fresh and new government was formed in the interest of the nation.

Mr Secondus called on members of the party and other political parties to join forces to rescue power from the APC.

“We, therefore, invite our brothers, sisters, youths and women from other political parties in this platform to join us to rescue our country that is in distress, socially, politically, economically and security-wise.”

On Wednesday’s Mace at the Senate chamber, he called for the prosecution of those responsible for the act.

chairman described the incident as ugly and sad, which underscored the fact that the country’s democracy was seriously under threat.

He said, “how did the hoodlums pass through all the security checks, majestically walked into the chambers to cause such havoc, leaving much to chew to all discerning minds.

“What happened in the Senate yesterday is a clear assault on democracy, a coup against the legislature and should not only be condemned but those responsible should be tried for treason as demanded by the law.

“Herdsmen brazenly invade our homes and farms, rape, maim and kill our people daily, and thugs do the same in our parliament, yet we have a government.

“This obnoxious development has placed enormous challenge on us as the main opposition party to up our game and quickly rescue this country from the appalling APC administration.”

Mr Secondus also expressed disbelief on the news credited to President Muhammadu Buhari, describing Nigerian youth as lazy people and “his continued de-marketing of Nigeria each time he travels outside the country.’’

“Our youth are not lazy, they are resourceful and indeed they are our future leaders.”

On his part, Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who explained the Senate incident, said it was not just a coincidence but collusion.

According to him, this will send a wrong signal to foreign investors interested in investing in the country.

Mr Ekweremadu, however, pledged the support of PDP senators for all PDP activities.

In his part, Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman of PDP Governors Forum, Ayodele Fayose, pledged that the hope of Nigerians in the party would not be let down.

Mr Fayose also expressed optimism that the PDP would emerge victorious in the July 14 governorship election in his state.

Politics › How Many Employment Opportunities Have You Created?- Yoruba Youth Group Asks PMB by BeeBeeOoh(op): 11:37am On Apr 20, 2018
The Yoruba Youth Socio-cultural Association (YYSA) has taken a swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari following his remark in London that Nigerian youths are lazy.

The youths who said contrary to what Buhari said, Nigerian youth are hardworking and industrious however declared that the President is totally out of point for making such remark.

DAILY POST recalls that Buhari in his remarks while speaking in London was quoted as saying that many Nigerian youth are lazy.

But, National Secretary of YYSA, Comrade Olawale Ajao in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Friday in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital while reacting to Buhari’s outburst lamented that it is unfortunate that, “President Buhari is fond of giving a negative remark about Nigeria whenever he talks abroad.”

Ajao said, “Hardly is there any country which youths are as hardworking as Nigeria in the whole world.”

According to him, “It is on record that, in 2014, when the Nigerian Immigrations announced mass vacancy, 6.5 million people in all 37 states of Nigeria (including the FCT) stormed various recruitment centres in the country for the 4000 vacant positions in the Nigeria Immigration Service. At least 16 job seekers were confirmed dead, and several scores of people were injured.

“The major causes of death was due to overcrowding and stampede of the applicants. Was President Buhari unaware of this?”.

Ajao added that, “Millions of Nigerian youths invest heavily in education after which they are thrown into an oversaturated job market. Due to the fierce competition, ineffective labour laws and other socio-economic problems, graduates are either underemployed or face the risk of working more for less pay.”

“To show the willingness of our youth to work, many ladies are despirate to the extent of offering themselves for adultery just because there are tired of being idle, just as majority of applicants compromise certain percentage of their salaries to the facilitators of the job”, he argued”.

Ajao said there are countless number of graduates trading in the market, driving commercial vehicles in towns and doing all sorts of menial jobs for survival.

He concluded tha, “We (YYSA) want Mr President to tell us how many employment opportunities his government has provided and how many Nigerians have turned down the job offers”.

Politics › Thugs Invasion: Senate Summons DSS DG, Police IG; Demands For Explanation by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:46am On Apr 20, 2018
...Wants explanation on collapse of security day gang attacked parliament

...How plot to impeach Saraki, Ekweremadu was foiled

Fred Itua; Molly Kilete, Abuja

The Senate has summoned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Daura Lawal to appear before it to explain Wednesday’s securiy lapses in the National Assembly.

The head of the two security outfits are expected to appear and brief senators on the state of investigation on the invasion and the snatching of the mace, the senate’s symbol of authority.

Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who made the disclosure after a closed-door session, yesterday, described the invasion as “a very sad testimony, a derogation, and total smear on our democracy and nation.”

Ekweremadu declared: “We believe that there should be consequence for bad behaviour. We swore to uphold the laws of the Federal Republic and the principles of democracy. It still beats the imagination of Nigerians and the civilised world that the attackers passed through the several security checks and barriers into the National Assembly and the inner recesses of this chamber and also escaped with the mace into the thing air despite the well-known fortified surroundings of this parliament.

“Therefore, we hold that it will be a detour to the state of nature where life was lawless and brutish if what happened yesterday is allowed to go unpunished or to be swept under the carpet. It will never happen. We will get to the roots of the matter.

“We call on the Inspector General of Police and Director-General of the State Security Service to ensure that all those who plotted, aided, abated and executed this dastardly affront on our democracy and belittled Nigeria before the international community must be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others. We will be inviting them next week to brief us on the state of the investigations.”

On Wednesday, at about 11.30am, five persons beat the security in the National Assembly and snatched the mace, while the day’s legislative business was ongoing.

Mulling the need for the National Assembly to have its own police, Ekweremadu said the current security architecture of the parliament was outside the control of lawmakers. He also recalled how what played out on Wednesday had been playing out in many state Houses of Assembly across the country.

“This incident has also brought to the fore the case many of us have always made for a decentrlaised police system. Ordinarily, a big institution like the National Assembly should have its own police, apart from the Sergeants-at-Arm. However, the security of this parliament is fully outside the control of the National Assembly. Instructively, the same gangterism that was witnessed here yesterday has been recorded in various State Houses of Assembly,” he said.

Meanwhile, the IGP, Idris, has returned the stolen mace to the senate. The IGP who was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. Habila Joshak, handed over the mace to the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani Omolori.

Ekweremadu acknowledged receipt of the mace on the floor of the Senate.

The Police Force Headquarters in Abuja said the mace was recovered at a flyover before the Abuja City Gate.

Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, ASP Aremu Adeniran, said in a statement that a patriotic passer-by saw it and alerted the Police.

The statement read: “Sequel to the invasion of the Senate Chambers of the National Assembly by some suspected thugs who disrupted the senate plenary session and carted away the mace, IGP Ibrahim K. Idris immediately instituted a high-powered police Investigation and Intelligence Team coordinated by the IGP Monitoring Unit of the Force and further directed a total lock-down of the Federal Capital Territory with intense surveillance patrol and thorough stop and search operations at various police check-points with a view to arresting perpetrators and possible recovery of the stolen mace.

“The police teams engaged in massive raids of identified criminal spots/flashpoints, stop and search operations, visibility and confidence building patrols, intelligence gathering, which forced the suspected miscreants to abandon the mace at a point under the flyover before the City Gate, where a patriotic passer-by saw it and alerted the Police.

“While a discreet investigation into the incident is still ongoing to arrest and bring the perpetrators to justice, the Nigeria Police Force appreciates the spirited members of the public, most especially motorists within Abuja metropolis for their support, cooperation and timely information during the rigorous stop and search operations for the recovery of the mace.”

Meanwhile, Daily Sun has reliably gathered that the invasion and snatching of the mace was a fallout of a meeting held by some lawmakers at the residence of a ranking senator from North Central in Abuja on Tuesday night.

A senator who is familiar with what transpired explained how the news of the plot came to Ekweremadu few minutes after the senate commenced its session.

“What played out on Wednesday didn’t come as a surprise. The only difference is that it happened too suddenly and we didn’t have the needed time to counter them. But I am glad that their plot didn’t work out in the end.

“On Tuesday night in Abuja, there was a meeting held by some senators. At that meeting, they agreed on how to effect a leadership change in the senate, with support from some state actors. But we didn’t know about this until we were already in session on Wednesday.

“If you noticed, some senators who attended the meeting were all present on the floor of the Senate that day. These are the same senators who hardly attend proceedings. But because they had a plan, they all attended plenary.

“In that meeting, they plotted that Omo-Agege will forcefully come into the chamber. And that actually happened. As soon as those hoodlums struck and left with the mace, the plotters were thinking that the Senate was going to adjourn out of fear and close the chamber for the day.

“If that had happened, they would have taken over the Senate. They had planned that as soon as the Senate was deserted, they would reconvene with the mace. Even when they are in the minority, they would removed the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ekweremadu and replace them with loyalists of the president.

“What I think happened was that Omo-Agege was betrayed. We disappointed them. We refused to fight or abandon the senate for anyone and that stopped their plan for now. I know they are still meeting and they will not give up as long as they see Saraki and Ekweremadu as enemies of President Muhammadu Buhari.”

- Benson Abounu, acting governor of Benue state said security reports made available to him had indicated that large numbers of armed mercenaries had occupied the Benue Valley

- He said the mercenaries had already identified and occupied five different locations and communities along the riverine areas of the state

An alarm of impeding attack within the next few days on five communities has been raised by the Benue state government. The gunmen are suspected to be hired mercenary.

Acting governor of Benue state, Benson Abounu, raised the alarm on Wednesday, April 18 after the State Executive Council Meeting held at Government House Makurdi.

Tribune quoted the deputy governor as saying that security reports made available to him had indicated that large numbers of armed mercenaries had occupied the Benue Valley and were planning to launch simultaneous attacks on five major Benue communities.

“We have received security reports which indicated that large number of hired armed mercenary have moved into the Benue Valley and mapped out different locations to launch possible attacks on five major communities in the state, simultaneously.

‘‘The reports further showed that the hired mercenary would be carrying out their nefarious attacks on the communities occupied by people around the riverine areas.

‘‘This development is absolutely worrisome and unhealthy to our state, and we condemn it in totality. Since we got this report, we have not rested in our oars. I have been meeting with all the heads of security formations in the state, for us to find ways of stopping these people,” he said.

Consequently, Abounu called on the federal government to urgently deploy more security personnel, particularly in and around border communities.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that troops of 72 Special Forces Battalion on Monday, April 16, on Operation MESA at Yogbo in Guma local government area of Benue state encountered about 20 militia herdsmen at Teguma village while on patrol.

According to a statement sent to NAIJ.com by the director army public relations, Brigadier-General Texas Chukwu, four of the militia herdsmen were neutralized during the encounter while others fled following superior gun power.

Politics › Senate's Stolen Mace Recovered By Nigeria Police by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:04am On Apr 19, 2018
The Nigerian Police has recovered the Senate’s stolen Mace at a flyover before the Abuja City Gate, where according to ASP Aremu Adeniran, Deputy Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters a patriotic passer-by saw it and alerted the Police.

This came as the IGP has ordered the Commissioner of Police FCT Command to beef-up security at the National Assembly.

According to a statement by the Police on Thursday morning the Mace was recovered by the ‘Police teams who engaged in massive raids of identified criminal spots/flashpoints, stop and search operations, visibility and confidence building patrols, intelligence gathering which forced the suspected miscreants to abandon the Mace at a point under the flyover before the City Gate, where a patriotic passer-by saw it and alerted the Police.’

The police statement read thus:

Sequel to the invasion of the Senate Chambers of the National Assembly, Federal Republic of Nigeria on the 18th April, 2018 by some suspected thugs who disrupted the Senate Plenary Session and carted away the Mace of the Red Chambers, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim K. Politics › Atiku Abubakar Reacts To Attack On Senate & Snatched Mace by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:24pm On Apr 18, 2018
Lagos – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the invasion of the Senate chamber by hoodlums and the carting away of the Mace – the symbol of authority of the upper chamber.
Reacting to the incident in Abuja on Wednesday, Atiku described the attack as a dangerous precedent and an assault on Nigeria’s democracy by anti-democratic elements.

“I am utterly embarrassed, shocked and outraged by this ugly development because it is not only a threat to a major democratic institution, but also represents a grave danger to the survival of our democracy.”

He said that given the tension in the country, the timing of the attack could not have come at a worse time for Nigeria, and that using illegal and unconstitutional methods to threaten the authority of a key democratic institution is unacceptable, evil, and condemnable.

The former Vice President noted that it is inconceivable that hoodlums could force their way into the Senate chamber and take away the Mace.

“If criminals could commit such security breach with impunity, it means that our entire democracy is in danger”, Atiku added.

He reminded Nigerians that so many people have died in order to bring this democracy about and therefore called for immediate investigation into the incident and the prompt prosecution of those involved.

“It is unacceptable and reprehensible to subject the National Assembly to this intimidation and humiliation. This attack by thugs should not go unpunished no matter who is involved”, he added.

Atiku while likening democratic institutions to the human body said “if one organ is harmed, it affects others.”

He urged those pushing the country’s political temperature to dangerous levels to desist from it as they are playing a Russian roulette with Nigeria’s hard-earned democracy.

He however called for unity, calm and an end to the culture of political disunity that is tearing our dear country apart.

Politics › Seek Foreign Assistance To Combat Killings - Senators Tells President Buhari by BeeBeeOoh(op):
...demand sack of service chiefs

Following the escalation of killings by Fulani herdsmen across many states in the country, some senators yesterday, called on President Muhammadu Buhari, to sack the service chiefs and heads of security agencies for their failure to tackle the security menace.

The lawmakers also urged the President to seek foreign assistance to contain the worrisome security situation in the country since the nation’s security agencies had demonstrated lack of capacity and capability to address the lingering security challenges in Nigeria.

This was as the lawmakers asked President Buhari to take the issue of insecurity in the country more seriously and bring it under control, warning that the country was rapidly drifting to anarchy because of the obvious failure of government to protect helpless Nigerians from the sustained killings in the country.

The Senate further condemned the incessant killing in Nasarawa State, which left no fewer than 32 people dead, many injured and thousands of persons displaced to different parts of the state and other neighbouring states.

The apex legislative chamber also directed its Ad-hoc Committee on the Review of the National Security Architecture, to investigate the killings in Nasarawa State alongside other security developments it has been handling and report to the Senate.

The Upper Chamber made these resolutions following a point of order raised by Senator Suleiman Adokwe, representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), drawing the attention of the chamber to the persistent killings in his political enclave, which resulted in deaths of his constituents.

Adokwe told the Senate that Fulani herdsmen were brutally killing innocent people in his constituency for four days, lamenting that the armed forces were just watching without making any attempt to stop the carnage.

He noted that those who were being killed in the violence, which most of the senators described as genocide, were people of Tiv ethnic nationality in about five local government areas of Nasarawa State.

He said: “I like to draw the attention of the Senate to the ongoing crisis in the Southern Senatorial District of Nasarawa State. Throughout the weekend and up to the moment that I am speaking, herdsmen have unleashed terrorist mayhem on the people of the senatorial district, leaving many dead, numerous wounded persons and hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons.

“Their victims are largely the Tiv speaking ethnic nationalities with a reported dead toll of 32 persons and we are still counting.

“The real tragedy is not in the well-coordinated and simultaneous carnage across Awe, Obi, Keana and Doma local government areas of southern senatorial district, but the tragedy lies with the fact that for four days running, this mayhem continues unhindered, unchecked, unstopped by any arm of the law and security enforcement agencies.

Indeed, right under the noses of the armed forces and the police, this killing is sustained unabated by sheer negligence or refusal to act by the security agencies. It is very sad that in Nigeria, with all the security forces, a whole senatorial district will go on being punished by the militia and no action coming from government. This is a sad commentary.

“As I speak to you now, the Southern senatorial district has been completely emptied by the militia and they are occupying all the houses and villages of the Tiv people across all local governments, up to five of them and they are just within 30-minute drive from the state capital, Lafia.
“There is even an army base close to where this carnage is taking place with no single shot fired by the army. It baffles me and beats my imagination that a whole enforcement agency of the Nigerian state will stand by and witness Nigerians being killed endlessly. Nobody can explain this.”

Seconding the motion, Senator Barnabas Gemade (APC, Benue), lamented that the country was gradually sliding into anarchy as a result of the failure of the APC-led government to secure the lives and property of citizens.

He noted with grief that it was as a result of the failure of government to play its role to ensure security of lives and property of citizens that compelled some notable Nigerians to call for self defence against the reckless invaders.

His words: “It is a shame that a sitting government could watch criminality go to the level that we have seen it today rather than rise up and take very decisive steps against it, we embark on deniability and simply shield this evil by just explaining with flimsy excuses that these are communal clashes in those communities.”

Contributing, Senator Solomon Adeola (APC, Lagos West), called for the immediate removal from office of all the service chiefs as they have failed to proffer solution to incessant killings in the land.
Senator Jeremiah Useni (PDP, Plateau), a retired General, also urged President Buhari to kick out heads of security agencies for indiscipline and non-productivity.

The deputy minority whip, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha (Taraba South), told the Chamber that time had come when the Senate should suspend its legislative responsibilities and face the issue of security headlong until sanity was restored, warning that Nigeria might cease to exist if the security situation remained unaddressed.

Also, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (PDP, Bayelsa) expressed worries over the failure of government to sincerely tackle the security challenges in the country, saying that it was an indication of a complete failure in the leadership of the nation.
In his remarks, the Deputy President of the Senate, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the session, said that it was time Nigeria sought for international assistance to tackle the problem of insecurity in Nigeria.

He also pointed out that there could be no investment in the country if there was no peace in the land, stating that if the country was secured, investors could come on their own without invitation by anybody.

He said: “If citizens are being killed, we owe the country a responsibility as a parliament to give it the desired attention. And we will never stop talking about these killings. Unless it stops, we will never be tired of speaking about it.

L“The time has come for us to seek help from other countries as some of us have suggested here. We should not be ashamed to ask for help. The President met with the UK Prime Minister and she was of the opinion that Britain would help us security wise. America is also offering to help. We should not be reluctant to come out openly and say we need help, because what we have now is a global village.

“We cannot be asking people to come to Nigeria and invest their monies here. They will not; rather, let us ask them to come and help us to solve our security problem. If we solve our security problem, they will come here, with nobody asking them to come. I think the first thing to do is to resolve the issue, and it is something we all need to do, and do it fast.”

Politics › Insecurity: Senators Demand Sack Of Service Chiefs, Security Agencies Heads.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:35pm On Apr 17, 2018
Abuja – Federal lawmakers in the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, demanded for the immediate dismissal and replacement of the nation’s service chiefs and heads of other security agencies over lingering insecurity in the land.

The Senators, who called on President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of necessity, accept an offer of assistance made to him by the British Prime Minister, Theresa May on Monday, lamented what they called, “a lack of decisive action on the part of the executive to tackle the issue of herdsmen killings in parts of the country”.

Debating a motion under matters of urgent public importance, sponsored by Senator Suleiman Adokwe (PDP, Nasarawa State) on the renewed killings by herdsmen and criminal militia groups, the lawmakers noted that government’s inability to tackle unending killings in the land has endangered the nation’s democracy, as Nigerians have become increasingly disappointed and frustrated over failure of government to protect them.

The lawmakers, in venting their frustration and anger, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, seek international help in curbing growing insecurity in Nigeria.

Making a particular appeal to the President was the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who asked the President to accept British Prime Minister, Theresa May’s offer of assistance in curbing incessant killings in Nigeria.

He said: “We should not be ashamed to ask for help. The President met with the UK Prime Minister and she was of the opinion that Britain would help us security wise”.

Contributing to debate on the matter, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Lagos), argued that there was need to inject fresh ideas into how the security problems in the country can be remedied.

He stressed that there is nowhere that is safe in Nigeria with the daily killings that the nation is regaled with.

“The security situation has not improved and what the president need at this time is fresh ideas on how to tackle numerous security challenges confronting the nation,” Adeola said.

Adeola further pointed out that for the President to address the security challenges, he must remove the incumbent service chiefs to give room for those with fresh ideas, adding that “the nation should do away with unproductive tenure elongation in areas where fresh ideas are needed”.

“We know the way the military organisations operates. Those with fresh ideas dare not come out against their superiors or else they risk premature retirement from service. So the current service chiefs should go to allow officers with fresh ideas address our alarming security issues,” he added.

Providing what seemed like a professional angle to the debate, Senator Jeremiah Useni (PDP, Plateau State), identified the constant clashes among security agencies as part of the security problems.

Useni, a retired Lieutenant General of the Nigerian Army, was of the opinion that heads of such agencies be removed to pave way for more harmonious relationship among security agencies.

However, Adokwe had while presenting his motion earlier said: “Throughout the weekend and up to the moment that I am speaking, herdsmen have unleashed terror and mayhem on the people of my senatorial district, leaving many dead bodies, numerous wounded persons and hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons. The victims are largely the Tiv speaking ethnic nationalities with a reported dead toll of 32 persons and we are still counting.

“The real tragedy is not in the well coordinated and simultaneous carnage across Awe, Obi, Keana and Doma local government areas of Southern senatorial district but the tragedy lies from the fact that for four days running, this mayhem continued unhindered, unchecked, unstopped by any arm of the law and security enforcement agencies”, he told bewildered colleagues.

The visibly shaken lawmaker lamented that “right under the noses of the armed forces and the police, this killing is sustained unabated by sheer negligence or refusal to act by the security agencies.

“It is very sad that in Nigeria, with all the security forces a whole senatorial district will go on being punished by militia and no action coming from government. This is a sad commentary.”

He wondered that despite the existence of an army base close to where this carnage is taking place there is no single shot fired by the army.

“It baffles me and beats my imagination that a whole enforcement agency of the Nigerian state will stand by and witness Nigerians being killed endlessly. Nobody can explain this.

“It is no wonder that very eminent Nigerian citizens have urged Nigerians to defend themselves because their life is in their own hands and no longer in the hands of the Nigerian security forces.

“I am very emotional on this matter and I am not one given to emotion very easily. But what I have gone through this weekend is very horrifying; it is very distressing and sad.

“It is as if we are in a lawless society where life is brutish, where there is absence of state powers. We call on the federal government to stop this carnage,” Adokwe submitted.

Senator Barnabas Gemade (APC, Benue), in his opinion said Nigeria is becoming a “state without control, a state that is experiencing anarchy and a state in which we have seen ethnic cleansing”.

According to him, “it is a shame that a sitting government could watch criminality go to the level that we have seen it today and rather than rise up and take very decisive steps against it, we embark on deniability and simply shield this evil by just explaining with flimsy excuses that these are communal clashes in those communities.

“I don’t understand why responsible people elected to control the governments of Nigeria will simply turn away from the reality of facing this matter squarely. And the Inspector-General will fly by helicopter to a town, land in the market square and be asking people whether there is militia in this town or not. And nobody whatsoever seems to call anybody to order. This is very sad. We have done enough of a minute silence for innocent Nigerians being killed.”

Aggregating the views, Ekweremadu who presided over the session noted that there’s no sense in making preparations for elections when the people don’t feel secured, adding that there can only be elections when there is a country.‎

“‎Deliberately, we have given this thing the attention and priority it deserves. As we have pointed out, the primary purpose of government anywhere in the world is the preservation of the lives of citizens. If citizens are being killed, we owe the responsibility as a Parliament to give it the desired attention. And we will never stop talking about these killings. Unless it stops, we will never be tired of speaking about it.

“I have to thank you, distinguished colleagues, for your patriotic contributions. We have listened to senators from different parts of the country – from the East to the West, North to the South – and we are united in condemning the killings. It is indeed very regrettable.

“I ask myself: assuming this is happening in America, in the United Kingdom or France, will it take all this time to be resolved? As we know not even in South Africa. But it appears that we are taking too many things for granted. The time has come for us to seek help from other countries as some of us have suggested here,” he said.

“America is also offering to help. We should not be reluctant to come out openly as say we need help, because what we have now is a global village.

“We cannot be asking people to come to Nigeria and invest their monies here. They will not! Rather, let us ask them to come and help us to solve our security problem.

“If we solve our security problem, they will come here, with nobody asking them to come. I think the first thing to do is to resolve the issue, and it is something we all need to do, and do it fast.

“We are representatives of the people. If they kill everybody, we will nobody to represent; we will have no job. We are not on appointments, we are representatives. If we have nobody to represent, nobody will have a job here. So, security is more important than any other thing that we do here”, he added.

He stressed that “if it gets to a level where we have to shut down this National Assembly and sit down with the executive for as long as it lasts to resolve the problem, we may have to do that”.

“I am happy that we have spoken today and everybody is concerned. I just want to appeal that we do not allow any situation to divide us as a Senate. Let us continue to speak with one voice until this matter is resolved.

“It is critical and people are very worried. We must have a country before we can talk about elections,” he added.

Politics › 2015: Uche Secondus Received N250m From Dasuki For Special Duties - EFCC Reveals by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:05am On Apr 17, 2018
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, allegedly received N250m from the Office of the National Security Adviser under the leadership of the embattled former NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s report has said.

The report, which was sighted by one of our correspondents, stated that Secondus allegedly received the money during the build-up to the 2015 general elections.

Secondus, who was the Deputy Chairman (South) of the PDP at the time, allegedly collected the money for ‘special duties.’

The report partly read, “Uche Secondus received N200m in cash from the ONSA with voucher 0244. His Special Adviser, one Chukwurah, signed for the money on his behalf on February 2, 2015. Earlier, he had collected N50m which was personally received by him on November 7, 2014.

“The funds were approved by Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) for unknown reasons but were merely referred to as ‘special duties.’”

The report also accused Secondus and erstwhile Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, as well as the lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, Senator Bassey Akpan, of receiving vehicles worth about N1.1bn from Babajide Omokore, an oil magnate standing trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

According to the report, the vehicles which ranged from Mercedes Benz luxury cars to campaign buses and trucks were bought with the proceeds of fraud.

The report added, “Adamu Mu’azu received vehicles worth N504, 500, 000 including a Benz G63 worth N45m between May and August 2014.

“Secondus received vehicles worth N310m. On June 28, 2013, he received a Benz G63 worth N36m; on April 8, 2014, he received two Toyota Hilux vehicles worth N14m. On July 8, 2014, he received 10 Hiace buses worth N90m while on November 13, 2014, he received 15 Hiace mid-roof buses worth N120m. He also received a N50m Range Rover Biography SUV.”

The report accused Senator Bassey Akpan of receiving vehicles worth N303m from Omokore while he was the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Finance as well as the Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Direct Labour Coordinating Committee whose job was to ensure that government projects were completed using direct labour approach to save some money for the state.

Two of Omokore’s companies – Bay Atlantic Energy and Sahel Energy – were said to have received contracts from the committee headed by Akpan.

The report added, “Senator Bassey Akpan received a BMW X5 BP worth N50m; an Infinity QX56BP worth N45m; a Range Rover worth N40m; three Toyota Hiace buses worth N27m; two Toyota Hiace High-roof buses worth N16m, six Toyota Hilux D cabin vehicles worth N42m as well as other vehicles worth N83m.

“He received the vehicles from Omokore while heading a committee which was giving contracts to the same Omokore.

“He has been invited on several occasions but he has refused to show up. He was supposed to come to the EFCC office on Monday (yesterday) but he refused to come.”

But Secondus has described the claim by the anti-graft agency as a blackmail and a continuation of what he described as media trial.

He said there were plans to blackmail and discredit the main opposition party and its leadership.

He however said the plan would not work.

Secondus, who spoke through his media aide, Mr. Ike Abonyi, asked the agency or anyone with proof of the allegations to come to court.

Abonyi said, “Secondus is already in court on this matter and that is all. It is a continuation of media trial and blackmail.

“He has said he did not collect any money and he had challenged anyone with contrary proof to meet him in court and testify against him.

“There’s no need to be talking about a case pending in court in the newspapers. If the government has anything to say, they should file it before the court as demanded.”

Also speaking, Secondus told one of our correspondents that he knew that the government would not stop at anything to tarnish his image.

But he said that the move would fail.

He challenged the government to come out with the vouchers with which he was said to have signed, adding that such signature would also be subjected to forensic analysis.

He said, “I never collected any money from anywhere. I didn’t ask anyone to collect money for me as well and I didn’t sign any voucher to collect any money.

“It is pure blackmail which will never work. I have gone to court and I expect them to challenge me in court and come and testify against me.

“If they are cooking up anything, with the aim of blackmailing me, it will fail. I know that the task of uprooting this non-performing government would be horrendous. But God is always on the side of the people.”

Attempts to speak with Akpan proved abortive as he could not be reached for his reaction to the allegation as his telephone line indicated that it was off when it was called on Monday night. He had yet to reply a text message sent to him as of the time this report was filed.
