Crime › Grandma, Six Others Arrested For Robbery. (Picture) by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:56am On Aug 11, 2016 |
The Zone 2 Police Command, Lagos State, has arrested a gang of armed robbers which allegedly hijacked trucks at gunpoint in different parts of Ondo, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos states.
PUNCH Metro learnt that among the seven suspects was a 54-year-old grandmother, Bola Ajayi, who was apprehended in the Ilupeju area of Lagos State for allegedly receiving some of the stolen goods.
Our correspondent gathered that the gang members were arrested by operatives attached to the zonal command on Monday, August 1.
The other six suspects are Olanrewaju Gbadamosi, 33; Lukman Akinola, 33; Dele Rotimi, 37; Taiwo Olabode, 38; Uche Anthony, 27; and Taiwo Ayodele, 27.
The police said the gang members were nabbed at about 10am while allegedly on a robbery operation at a hotel in Ore, Ondo State.
Two locally-made guns and one dummy gun were recovered from them.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro while being paraded at the zonal headquarters, Ajayi, who hails from Abeokuta, Ogun State, denied knowing the gang members.
She said, “I do not know any of these gang members. It is true that I bought about 100 cartons of drinks from Lanre’s father (Gbadamosi). That was in April 2015. I did not know the goods were stolen. The man was my friend’s husband. It was the man who said he had some goods to sell and I paid him. I cannot recall how much I paid for the cartons. I have never met his son or any of these people. I have children and grandchildren; I cannot rob.”
Gbadamosi said he had participated in two robbery operations, adding that he had repented.
He said, “I am not the ring leader. But when the police arrested me, I became sober. I was the one who led police operatives to arrest the others. I had gone to rob on just two occasions. I cannot say how much I made. I was into plank business before. A friend introduced me to hijacking trucks and I made N300,000 on my first operation.”
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2, Abdulmajid Ali, who paraded the gang, said investigation was ongoing.
He said, “The suspects were arrested in Ore, Ondo State; Fiditi, Oyo State; and Ogijo, Ogun State. The syndicate confessed to hijacking and robbing about four trailers between 2015 and now. They were also involved in serial kidnappings in those states. Investigation is in progress and the suspects will soon appear in court. http://www.punching.com/grandma-six-others-arrested-robbery/

Health › #SaveMayowa: Police Unfreeze Fundraising Account.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:41am On Aug 11, 2016 |
The dust has settled and the Nigerian police has unfrozen the #SaveMayowa campaign accounts.
Recall that allegations surfaced some weeks ago as regards the genuineness pf the fundraising program set up to help Mayowa Ahmed who is battling with Ovarian Cancer get the much needed medical attention.
The controversy over the alleged fraudulent conduct as regards the fundraising led to the freezing of the collection account by the Police.
The Lagos State Police Command has however lifted the ban on the account after it ascertained that there was no fraud involved.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, the Police is set to remove the embargo placed on the accounts containing the sum of N81million and 100,000 dollars.
The Commissioner further noted that the allegation stemmed from a misunderstanding over the modalities for dispensing and controlling the money between the Ahmed family, the Nollywood actress, Toyin Aihmaku and Life Stake Foundation. http://www.herald.ng/savemayowa-police-unfreeze-fundraising-account/Lalasticlala, Mynd44 |
Politics › Panic: Militants Attacks Jonathan, Threatens To Reveal More Dirty Secrets.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:27am On Aug 11, 2016*. Modified: 4:46am On Aug 11, 2016 |
– The Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) insists Jonathan is a grand patron of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA)
– RNDA says it is disappointed that Jonathan has denied his affiliation with the NDA
– The group has threatened to reveal more incriminating detailsThe Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA), a splinter group of the Niger Delta Avengers has insisted former President Goodluck Jonathan is the grand patron of the Niger Delta Avengers.
Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has been threatened by the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers. Daily Post reports that the RNDA threatened to reveal more sordid details about Jonathan’s connection with the Avengers.
The group made the disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen. The statement detailed how NDA was formed with the sole objective of taking over from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) and countering their activities.
RNDA said it understands why Jonathan denied the NDA.
The statement signed by its Spokesperson, Cynthia Whyte said: “It therefore did not come to the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) as a surprise that the Grand Patron of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has distanced himself from the NDA.
“Like every sponsor, sympathizer and operative earlier mentioned who has equally denied links with the Avengers, we can understand the wisdom behind their decision; as their participation was always meant to be covert.”
The statement further disclosed that “after a clandestine meeting in Otuoke, Bayelsa state in 2014 between the Grand Patron and several unidentified persons ahead of the Presidential election campaign of 2015, it was agreed that the Okah brothers should be contacted to reach out to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan, and work with the group of persons to ensure victory for the PDP and President Jonathan.”
Below is the statement in full.
“To cut a long story short, NDA was formed to counter MEND but failed. The statement, however, said that the RNDA is not surprised that the alleged grand patron of the NDA, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has distanced himself from the NDA.
“It therefore did not come to the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) as a surprise that the Grand Patron of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has distanced himself from the NDA.
“Like every sponsor, sympathizer and operative earlier mentioned who has equally denied links with the Avengers, we can understand the wisdom behind their decision; as their participation was always meant to be covert.
“After a clandestine meeting in Otuoke, Bayelsa state in 2014 between the Grand Patron and several unidentified persons ahead of the Presidential election campaign of 2015, it was agreed that the Okah brothers should be contacted to reach out to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan, and work with the group of persons to ensure victory for the PDP and President Jonathan.
“At the time, because MEND was the suggested tool, the NDA as a body was not yet formed.
“Mr Kingsley Kuku and Mr. Gordon Obuah, SA on Niger Delta and Chief Security Officer to President Jonathan, respectively were selected to visit Charles Okah in Kuje prison. Mr Daniel Alabrah was given the assignment to draft an endorsement statement for Charles Okah to go through and pass on to MEND.
“The duo reported back that they had visited Okah in Kuje prison at night with the promise of his release along with others should he cooperate to get MEND to endorse Jonathan.
“It therefore came as a shock when MEND did the opposite and endorsed Buhari. Mr. Jonathan was livid with anger and swore that the Okah’s would rot in prison.
“It was also agreed that a show of force be put up in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state where ex-militants led by Government Ekpemupolo and Kingsley Kuku would threaten war should the electorate vote in Buhari’s favour.
“It was around that period the idea of forming the Niger Delta Avengers was conceived. In fact the name “Avengers” came from the lips of Goodluck Jonathan.
“As election day approached, certain stakeholders were mobilized to form a force to standby and ensure total anarchy in the South-South and South-East within 24 hours if the election results were not favourable to Jonathan. It took everyone by surprise to learn that Mr Jonathan had conceded defeat even before the final results were released. The standby force who were to attack specific targets were told to stand down. They were all compensated in US dollars cash.
“The Niger Delta Avengers was born from the failure at the polls and would now be used as an organ to make the Buhari government ungovernable, bring economic hardship and cause hatred for the administration towards failure at the 2019 general elections.
“MEND was aware of this plot through a spy that could not be identified, and the group began its campaign to counter every effort of the NDA and the Biafra agitators to this day. MEND has been a thorn in the flesh because MEND’s successful propaganda has caused the split in our ranks today.
“If former President Jonathan provokes us further with denials of this revelation, we will reveal more sordid details. The prison authorities in Kuje who witnessed the closed door meeting from the outside can attest to that night visit of November 2014.”
In the same vein, The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan is a grand patron of new militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers.
MEND’s statement corroborated the earlier claim by the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers that Jonathan was truly behind the formation of the dreaded group.
According to MEND, the former president was sponsoring the NDA to destabilise the government of his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari.
A statement signed by one Jomo Gbomo said GEJ should not deny being the grand patron of the group, which had been blowing up oil facilities in the Niger Delta region.
“MEND cannot hold brief for the RNDA, which pointedly accused Mr. Jonathan of complicity in fueling the ongoing Niger Delta crisis and patronising the NDA, apparently for political reasons.
“We are, however, quick to point out the fact that the RNDA has merely vindicated MEND’s belief and conviction that the former President and his cronies, who lost the 2015 presidential election, were using the illegal and treasonable NDA platform to destabilise President Buhari’s government," MEND's statement partly read. http://www.naij.com/924136-panic-militants-attack-jonathan-threaten-expose-more-dirty-secrets.htmlLalasticlala, Mynd44

Politics › Budget Padding: Dogara Shuns Police Invitation by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:06am On Aug 11, 2016 |
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has shunned the invitation of the police Special Investigating Panel over allegations of budget padding.
The PUNCH reliably gathered on Wednesday that the Speaker did not honour the police invitation because the letter was not signed by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.
The panel had in a letter to Dogara requested him and others mentioned in the petition to appear before it last Friday.
The Speaker, however, did not honour the invitation. Rather, he met with President Muhamadu Buhari over the budget crisis on Friday.
While Dogara’s accuser and a former House Appropriation Chairman, Abdulmumin Jibrin, appeared before the panel last week Friday and on Tuesday, Dogara and other principal officers shunned it.
Jibrin had accused the Speaker of padding the 2016 budget in collusion with some officers of the House.
Jibrin had submitted a petition against the accused to the police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, urging the agencies to probe them.
The lawmaker had also visited the police last Wednesday with documents to back up his claims.
The PUNCH gathered on Wednesday that the police invitation was regarded as an “informal invitation.”
A committee chairman close to Dogara who spoke on condition of anonymity told our correspondents that although an invitation was sent to the Speaker last week by the police, the document was “considered to be informal because it was signed by a low-ranking officer.”
He said, “The Speaker is the number four citizen of this country.
“If you are sending a letter to him, there should be a signature of the Inspector-General of Police on it.”
But a source close to the public panel told one of our correspondents that Dogara’s reason was not tenable, adding that any member of the panel could sign the invitation.
When contacted, Dogara’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Turaki Hassan, said he would make enquiries and get back to The PUNCH.
However, as of 9.48pm on Wednesday, Hassan had yet to return the call.
He also did not reply to a text message sent to his mobile phone.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Donald Awunah, said he could not comment because he did not know anything about the investigation.
“I don’t know about the investigation, so I can’t comment,” he said on the telephone.
Police, EFCC probe illegal –Reps
Some members of the House of Representatives took a position on the budget padding allegations by Jibrin on Wednesday, declaring that neither the police nor the EFCC had the power to investigate legislative proceedings.
Findings showed on Wednesday that the majority of the 96 committee chairmen and their 96 deputies considered the 2016 Appropriation Act as a law already in operation.
The development came as The PUNCH learnt that members of the Transparency Group were under pressure to back down on their confrontation with the leadership of the House.
An official of the House said, “The 1999 Constitution (as amended), particularly in sections 80 and 81, spell out the processes for the appropriation of government funds.
“The 2016 money bill did not only comply with the provisions of the constitution, but also followed all other legislative processes of passing bills by the National Assembly.
“The question that has remained unanswered is what the police and the anti-graft agencies want to investigate.”
Investigations showed that the chairmen and their deputies had discussed the issue and resolved that the budget conformed to the provisions of the law.
One of the chairmen, who heads the House Committee on Army, Mr. Rima Shawulu, told The PUNCH that lawmakers considered the involvement of the police and the EFCC in “purely parliamentary processes” as a waste of resources and man-hours.
“The police and the EFCC cannot investigate the internal proceedings of the House. Neither the House rules nor the Constitution of this country gives them the power to do so.
“What are they coming to investigate? That Jibrin said budget was padded? If he said budget was padded, he must bring the original. Where is the original?
“Let him publish the original. What will the police do in this case? That the House did not follow its process before the President signed the budget into law?
“If they are saying the zonal intervention projects are not being executed as passed in the budget, that is criminal, but that is not the case here.
“There is no place in the legislative process for the police or the EFCC.”
The PUNCH gathered that this was the position that the Speaker and the three other principal officers accused by Jibrin would make known to the police and the EFCC when they eventually appear before the security agency.
The others are the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Lasun Yussuff; the Chief Whip, Mr. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa; and the Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor.
Meanwhile, the meeting of the Transparency Group, a group of legislators backing Jibril, failed to take place for the second time on Wednesday.
Findings showed that the lawmakers came under pressure to stop their attacks on the principal officers of the House.
But the group was said to have insisted that the budgeting process was flawed and must be reviewed.
One of the key members of the group, Mr. Baballe Bashir, confirmed that the group was under pressure.
He, however, denied that the pressure was the reason the group could not meet.
Bashir, who is from Kano State, explained that many members had travelled to their constituencies to attend to pressing demands by their constituents.
He admitted that the group had sought a review of the budgeting process to address the “glaring cases of exclusion” in the distribution of zonal intervention projects.
“Our position is that there is so much that we must address in the budget so that the problems will not repeat themselves,” Bashir added.
He stated that the group had not backed down on the call for investigation into the allegations made by Jibrin.
APC will do the right thing, says Oni
The leadership of the All Progressives Congress, however, urged Nigerians to trust the ruling party in handling the padding crisis.
The APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Mr. Segun Oni, said Nigerians should not rely on body language, but on what the party spoke on the issue.
The former Governor of Ekiti State was asked by one of our correspondents why the APC was handling the alleged padding of the 2016 national budget as a “family affair” when the issue was national and had generated public interest.
He said, “The APC family is also a family of Nigerians because Nigerians have given us the responsibility to run Nigeria. So, if anything affects Nigeria, it affects our family and if anything affects our family, we expect Nigerians to take interest in it.
“Our party has as one of our cardinal objectives, the agenda to wrestle corruption to the ground.
“Nigerians should stop insinuating; they should listen to us. They should listen to our language as we speak it out. We are not going to contradict ourselves. Nigerians should expect us to do the right thing.”
The ex-governor said the APC had assigned an all-northerner committee, including the Deputy National Chairman (North), the National Vice-Chairman (North-West) and the National Secretary of the party, to handle the party’s intervention.
Both Dogara and Jibrin, who are at the centre of the crisis, are from the North. http://punchng.com/budget-padding-dogara-shuns-police-invitation/
