Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, bowed to Williams Kumuyi, general superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM), during a programme organised by the church in the state.

Kumuyi first paid a courtesy call on the governor at the Ekiti state government house, before Fayose joined him at the church’s camp ground at Ajebandele in Ado-Ekiti.

Describing Kumuyi as an anointed man of God, Fayose expressed happiness over the pastor’s visit, saying he knows yokes would be broken and he would soon be at peace.

“We are very happy to have you in the state at this time… It is a rare privilege for people like me and for the state. We know what God does through you and the church. We know that now that you are here, the yoke on our people would be broken and when the state is at peace, the governor too will be at peace,” he said.

“Many times that I stand on God’s words, it is the church that taught me. I gain all that from the undiluted preaching of the word of God from the church.

“Permit me to say that Pastor Kumuyi’s coming brings much attraction, the attraction comes because of what God has deposited in him and the church. Even coming to visit us as the leader of the state is a rare privilege. It is indeed a rare privilege for the state as well.”

Kumuyi commended the governor for the “progress the state has made” since he assumed office. He advised Fayose to lean on God’s words at all times.

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has raised the alarm that the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) are unrelenting in their “heinous plot” to eliminate him.
Jonathan also denied sponsorship of any militant group including the Niger Delta Avengers in a statement signed by his Media Aide, Ikechukwu Eze yesterday.

He described the allegation by one Cynthia White, purportedly from MEND, as “too cheap and false”.
He said the “violent and murderous underground” group led by one Henry Okah, which he said had not hidden its intention to destroy him and had made several attempts in the past to eliminate him had not achieved its aim because of God’s protection upon his life.
“For the avoidance of doubt, we are fully convinced that such an idiotic claim is too cheap a narrative, a facile contrivance so badly concocted that any discerning mind would easily see through its disingenuous and duplicitous nature.
“We, therefore, have no doubt in our mind that MEND, as a group contracted to go after Jonathan with the mind of assassinating him, is yet to abandon this criminal and ignominious craving.
“It is in this light that we view the purported statement issued by ‘Cynthia White’ as not only a sadistic continuation of this sick desire, but also a futile attempt to instigate the federal government to needlessly go after the former President.
“Those who have been following the unsavoury developments in some parts of the country since the last general elections, especially the ones that held in the South-south states, would have noticed that the ‎nefarious MEND, their pay masters and other unscrupulous elements in the region, have been striving fruitlessly to exploit the ensuing ‎confusion, by surreptitiously working for the fulfilment of its yet-to-be declared political agenda.
“It is our considered view that the statement in question is an off-shoot of that ignoble plan, this ‎time plotting to rubbish and torpedo the ongoing peace efforts in the region,” the statement said.
“We are not under any illusion that more accusations and allegations of this nature would not be hurled Jonathan’s way in the future, especially as his enemies appear to have perfected the act of throwing mud each time his profile gains added impetus and acclaim,” it added

An army officer, eight soldiers and two airforce men were killed, yesterday, when suspected armed bandits and gun runners opened fire on them as they went on a search and recovery operation in three communities in Niger State.

During the confrontation, eight suspected bandits and gun runners were shot dead by troops while 57 others were arrested. Two soldiers were missing in action.

A statement on the operation, signed by Col. Sani Usman, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, last night, said the battle ensued following covert surveillance and intelligence reports on the activities of some gun runners and armed bandits in Kopa, Dagma and Gagaw villages of Bosso Local Government Area, Niger State. Consequently, according to him, troops of 31 Artillery Brigade, 1 Division Nigerian Army, in conjunction with Nigeria Air Force detachment on Internal Security Operation MESA, went on “quick cordon and search in the affected areas to recover suspected weapon cache and arrest” the suspected persons and the armed bandits.

“Contrary to statements attributed to some questionable vested interests, the troops were on legitimate official duty aimed at safeguarding lives and property in the area”, Usman said.

The army spokesman narrated: “While approaching and deploying to carry out their lawful duty, the troops came under simultaneous and sporadic shootings in all the three locations. “They, however, responded as necessary in line with the rules of engagement.

“Sadly, an officer and eight soldiers of the Nigerian Army and two airmen of the Nigeria Air Force lost their lives in the line of national duty.

“Additionally, one soldier is still missing while two of their colleagues were seriously wounded. “The suspected gun runners and armed bandits also burnt down four operational vehicles and vandalized two others.

According to Usman, the troops also carted away four AK-47 rifles and one Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle belonging to the deceased soldiers. He went on: “The troops also killed eight of the armed bandits and arrested 57 others. “They also recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition. The recovered items include three AK-47 rifles,10 Local AK-47 rifles, 9 locally made pistols, six revolver guns, which fires 7.62mm (special ammunition), 45 loaded dane guns, 10 clubs and cudgels, 41 arrows, 18 bow cases, 122 cutlasses and machetes as well as 20 daggers.

“ Other items recovered include 31 axes, 63 rounds of 7.62 (special) ammunition, 10 Bajaj motorcycles, assorted charms and amulets, two vehicles, 38 mobile telephone handsets, a wristwatch, 5 identity cards, passport photographs, cash sum of N23,870.00k, 5 Japanese Yen and 35 different denominations of old Nigerian currency.

“Also recovered were 15 catapults, eight torch lights, two gun powder bottles, 4 empty cases of ammunition and 41 cartridges.

“The troops also seized a military waist belt and a pair of military combat boots.

“It is important to stress that the nefarious activities of the gun runners and the armed bandits has direct bearing with the influx of weapons and general insecurity in some parts of the Federal Capital Territory and the North-West geo-political zone of the country. “The same gun runners have been confirmed to be the suppliers of arms to armed robbery gangs that were involved in series of armed robbery attacks along Minna-Bida Road and environs”. The Army spokesman disclosed that although the situation is under control, the military will not rest on its oars until all those involved are arrested and brought to justice.

“ The military will continue to deal with any violent threat to our national security”, he stated. “ All law abiding citizens are enjoined to go about their lawful duties as the cordon and search operation continues in the general area and if necessary expand to other identified areas to keep our people safe
