Politics › Raid On Odili's Home Appeared Like Mission To Kill, Maim Her - Supreme Court by BeeBeeOoh(op):
The Supreme Court management also urged the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the invasion of Mary Odili’s home and make the findings public.

The Supreme Court management, on Tuesday, broke its silence on Friday’s raid on the home of one of its Justices, Mary Odili.

In a statement by its Director, Press and Information, Festus Akande, the apex court said the invasion which “depicted a gory picture of war” appeared like a mission to kill or maim her.

It said the raid carried out under the guise of undertaking a search based on a “questionable and baseless” warrant was “uncivilised and shameful”.

“We are alarmed with the news of the unwarranted and despicable raid on the official residence of one of our senior justices in the Supreme Court, Hon. Justice Mary Peter Odili, JSC, CFR on Friday October 29, 2021 in a Gestapo manner that unfortunately depicted a gory picture of war by some armed persons suspected to be security operatives representing different agencies of government, who seemed to have come to kill and maim their target under the guise of undertaking a search whose warrant was questionable and baseless.

“We are deeply saddened and taken aback by this uncivilized and shameful show of primitive force on an innocent judicial officer that has so far spent several years of her productive life serving the country she calls her own.”

Condemning the raid, the apex court drew parallels between it and the similar one carried out by the State Security Service (SSS) operatives on the houses of some judges, including two Justices of the Supreme Court, in Abuja and other parts of the country in 2016.

In a fashion like the SSS operatives’ 2016 invasion of judges’ homes, some security operatives including police officers laid a siege to the home of Mrs Odili, the wife of a former Governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili, at Imo Street, Maitama, Abuja, on late Friday.

A chief superintendent of police, Lawrence Ajodo, had applied for and obtained a search warrant from the Wuse Zone 6 magistrate’s court in Abuja, for execution on the Maitama, Abuja residence of Mrs Odili, who is the second most senior justice of the apex court.

Mr Ajodo claimed, in the court document, to be acting on behalf of a certain joint asset recovery team allegedly being coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Justice.

He said the application was based on an ongoing investigation into whistleblower information suggesting that “criminal activities” were taking place in the house.

Security operatives invaded the home on October 29 to execute the search warrant obtained from the magistrate’s court, but it was doubtful they were able to gain entry.

The magistrate who issued the search warrant reportedly revoked it later that day on the grounds that he was misled to issue it.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, who superintends over the Federal Ministry of Justice, distanced himself from the raid and the court processes on Saturday.

“This incident brought back, rather painfully, the ugly memory of the October 2016 midnight invasion of the homes of our respected justices with no satisfactory explanations as to the true motive behind such brazen assault on our collective sensibility,” the Supreme Court’s statement said.

‘Judiciary deserves respect’

The apex court said the judiciary being the third arm of the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria “should be respected and treated as such”.

“We have had a full dosage of this fusillade of unwarranted and unprovoked attacks on our judicial officers and even facilities across the country and we say it loudly now that enough is enough.”

It added that the judiciary should never be misconstrued by any individual or institution of government as the weeping child among the three arms of government that must always be chastised and ridiculed to silence because of our conservative disposition.

Investigations

The Supreme Court it had carried out an investigation into the incident, but also called on the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, to discretely probe the matter and make its outcome public.

“We commenced a full-scale independent investigation to unravel the true masquerades behind the mystery as well as the real motives behind the whole imbroglio,” the statement said, but did not disclose the findings of the probe.

It added : “Similarly, we call on the Inspector General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to rise up to the occasion by carrying out a discreet investigation and make his findings known to the Nigerian public with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice as quickly as possible.”

The statement came almost two days after police authorities ordered an investigation into the incident on Sunday.

In a police statement denying Mr Baba’s knowledge of the invasion of Mrs Odili, the IGP “directed the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) to conduct a discrete investigation into the incident.”

He also promised to make the outcome of the investigation public while he also ordered

The IGP also denied ordering the operation.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the State Security Service (SSS), who were also initially accused of being part of a joint team of security operatives that invaded the judge’s home had also denied involvement.

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, also distanced himself from it.

‘Discordant tunes’

Despite the denials issued by the security operatives, the Supreme Court said, Tuesday “there have emerged discordant tunes from the various security agencies that allegedly participated in the dastardly act.”

“The Nigerian judiciary cannot only bark, but can also bite,” it warned traducers.

“We can no longer be treated with disdain and levity. The rule of law and constitutionality must govern our conduct so that we can tag along with the comity of nations and be taken seriously too.”

Mrs Odili is the wife of a former governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili.

The invasion of Mrs Odili’s residence was initially linked to an acclaimed investigation of Mr Odili by the EFCC.

The EFCC had made a move to prosecute Mr Odili after he left office after two terms as governor in 2007, but was barred by the Federal High Court which issued a perpetual injunction restraining EFCC and other security agencies from arresting him.

Recently, Mr Odili filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge the seizure of his passport by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) which claimed to have acted on EFCC’s instruction.

Delivering judgement in the suit earlier in October, the judge, Inyang Ekwo, ordered the NIS to release Mr Odili’s passport, while also affirming the previous court decisions prohibiting his prosecution.

Crime › Nine Killed, Houses Burnt As Gunmen Raid Fulani Settlements In Niger State by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:30pm On Nov 02, 2021
No fewer than 9 persons have been killed in attacks on Fulani settlements in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.

Daily Trust gathered that the attacks suspected to have been carried out by vigilantes from Maza-Kuka occurred between Sunday and Monday.

The attacks may be a reprisal of the October 25 invasion of a mosque in Maza-Kuka, where 18 worshippers were murdered while 13 others were kidnapped.

The village head of Adogon-Mallam, a Fulani community, and his younger brother were killed after the attack at Maza-Kuka.

One of the victims, Shehu Mohammadu of Gawun village, told our correspondent that “Vigilantes came to our village and burnt our rooms and we ran away. My younger brother’s wife, Hawawu, and her 10-month-old-baby were killed.

“They also killed my younger brother’s 3-year-old son and his 10-year-old daughter. My younger brother, Aliyu, was also killed. They also killed my son, Mohammadu. He was 30 years. I lost 7 members of my family. I had to run; they would have killed me too.”

Mohammed said 51 cattle, 63 rams, 53 goats and a motorcycle were taken away while his younger brothers, Abdullahi and Ali, also lost 38 goats during the attacks.

He said, “We have left the village. I live in a faraway place now. I won’t go back home because they will kill me. Some of our people are staying with relatives in Kontagora. We are afraid of going back to our settlements because they will kill us. We cannot even go to search for our animals.”

Mohammed said his younger brother was killed in a separate attack on Sunday, decrying lack of security presence in the area.

Another eye witness, who said he is also taking refuge outside Niger State, Alhaji Muhammadu Marike, said “Apart from Monday attack that led to the death of the village head and his younger brother in Adogon Mallam, they came back again and picked us. Luckily for me, one of the vigilantes who is very close to me asked them to let me go. That was how I escaped.”

“Eight persons were taken away and their whereabouts have not been known. Some of our people ran to as far as Jebba, Kano and Zaria due to renewed attacks,” he said.

Abubakar Saidu, the eldest son to the deceased village head of Adogon, said in another Fulani settlement, a new born baby and his mother were killed and their huts were set ablaze.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said the command had deployed tactical team for manhunt of those behind the attack.

Abiodun asked members of the public to volunteer intelligence to assist the police and other security agencies in order to apprehend the hoodlums as investigation is ongoing.

I think it's time borrow' as a word should be removed from dictionaries and be replaced with Buhari, because there can't be Buhari without borrowing.

E.g Can You Buhari Me N5000, I'll Pay Back Next Week.

In fact, Buhari and borrowing are like beans and plantain that cannot be separated.

Properties › Femi Osibona: Face Behind Collapsed 21-storey Building In Ikoyi by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:22pm On Nov 01, 2021
He was in the building, according to unconfirmed reports

Prominent developer, Femi Osibona is the brain behind the collapsed 21-storey building which collapsed on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Monday.

The building under construction collapsed on Monday afternoon with many trapped and some dead.

Osibona is the developer of the massive project dubbed: 360 Degrees Towers on 44 BCD Gerrard Road, Ikoyi. The project represents three fine pieces of high-rise and real estate, being built in the area.

Two of the projects are still standing tall while the third one collapsed on Monday.

Osibona is the Managing Director of Fourscore Homes. He told Thisday in an interview in 2019 that Fourscore Homes is a member of the NHBRC (National Home Builders Registration Council) in South Africa and Zurich Building Guarantee in Europe, as part of the company’s presence overseas.

His company specialises in the building of choice properties in different parts of the world.

Osibona said. “We have exhibited our expertise in property development in the United Kingdom, South Africa, the United States of America and Nigeria. Fourscore Homes possesses uncommon capabilities in redefining property development in any market we choose to play in.”

On the first floor of the building is a suspended platform that serves as a recreational area where residents can unwind and hold a small party, if they wish. Also, there is a five-star lobby where residents can host friends and family members, without compromising their privacy.

The towers have various house types: Maisonettes of about 420sqms each on three floors; penthouses on two floors; and 4-bedroom flats on one floor, with each flat as large as 400sqms – almost twice the size of most flats in other developments in Ikoyi. The penthouses are about 600sqms to 800sqms.

Osibona’s company began its foray into real estate in the United Kingdom before branching out to South Africa and later Nigeria. In 2009, when Brig-General Buba Marwa (rtd) was the Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa, Fourscore Homes built six luxury units called Fourscore Mansions in Waterkloof, a very expensive neighbourhood in Pretoria.

Osibona was also the first African developer to develop a seven-storey building in the United Kingdom. The property called Fourscore Mansion is located at 113, Albion Drive London Fields, E8, 4LZ, East London. Not only that, he was the first black developer of African origin to build other projects in the UK. The company’s real estate business started in Hackney, London in 1997.

Buhari and his administration will always look for a way to give killer herdsmen and bandits soft landing.

Imagine blaming the innocent climate for all the atrocities being committed by his brothers.

I am not surprised as a matter of fact because,

1. You can't fight terrorism when you pardon terrorists and reintegrate them into the society.

2. You can't fight bandits when you say their offence are not federal offence.

3. You can't fight kidnappers when you pay them ransome and say that they're just businessmen doing their business.

Politics › 2023: North Will Back Any Credible Candidate From Any Region - NEF Declares by BeeBeeOoh(op):
•Ohanaeze, Middle Belt Forum, Ezeife knock NEF over comment on Igbo agitation

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has declared that it would back a candidate from any region for the 2023 presidential election.

Spokesman of the forum, Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, stated this in an interview with Daily Sun at the sideline of the fourth Malam Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State.

He, however, said the north would not accept a presidential candidate thrown up for the 2023 poll by a political party on the basis of regional consideration.

Ahmed, in a paper delivered at the lecture on behalf of NEF, entitled: “The President we want” warned that the north would turn its back to any party that deliberately tilts advantages to presidential candidates from particular regions in the 2023 electioneering.

“We don’t want the president to emerge as a product of ethnic or religious pushes. We don’t want a president that will be answerable to a portion of Nigeria. We won’t accept it,” he said.

He flayed moves by a section of the country to occupy the presidential office through violence, saying it was counter-productive to peace and unity efforts. He said the current situation in the country does not require a leader produced by cohesion or secession threats.

“The next president should emerge from a credible election from any part of the country but he or she must be first and foremost a Nigerian president. The north would back any credible candidate from the region who understand the problem, possess capacity to solve them (challenges) and can build bridges across the country.”

Ahmed said the north was concerned about the violence in the South East as much as it was worried by insecurity in parts of the north.

He, however, said the north would not be cowed by threats of secession ahead of the 2023 election.

“We don’t want organised violence or threat to produce the president of Nigeria. Secession is a bad option for South East. It is not in the best interest of this country or anybody.”

He asked self-determination group, IPOB, to stop the violence in the region.

“Why should the Federal Government allow IPOB to strangulate five South East states? If this administration do not have the capacity and willingness to ask this question, to deal with this problem, then the next administration should do so.”

Meanwhile, pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and former Anambra State Governor, Dr Chukwuemka Ezeife, have knocked Ahmed over his comment that the north would not accept any presidential candidate from any political party for the 2023 election if such candidate emerged on the basis of regional consideration.

Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, said NEF spokesman by his statements and pronouncements has over time shown he does not love Nigeria.

Ogbonnia said Ahmed lacked the knowledge of Nigeria’s political history as all the country’s presidents since 1999 were products of regional agitations.

“Many patriotic Nigerians have discovered that from all his remarks Dr Ahmed does not love Nigeria. He should know that all Nigeria’s presidents since 1999 emerged due to regional agitation. President Olusegun Obasanjo emerged due to the massive agitation by the South West after the election of Chief Moshood Abiola was annulled. Based on the agitation, the rulers at that time in their wisdom conceded the presidency to the South West. After the Obasanjo presidency, the north agitated that it was their turn and that agitation produced President Umaru Yar’Adua. Of course, the agitations from PANDEF and other South South groups during the Yar’Adua gave rise to the amnesty programme to the Niger Delta militants and also produced the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. Even the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is a product of collective agitation by the north.

“So, it is clear that the NEF spokesman doesn’t know what he is saying and he has no knowledge of Nigerian political history or political science. Agitation is part of democracy. The agitation by the South East for example or any other region is a way of expressing dissatisfaction with the status quo. Well-meaning patriotic Nigerians who understand the need for the continued corporate existence of Nigeria should concede the 2023 presidency to the South East because it is an agitation that is asking for equity and justice.”

Reacting, President of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), Dr. Pogu Bitrus, said the statement only showed that the north was afraid of southerners taking over from Buhari. He said the statement was insulting to other Nigerians because the issue of credibility was not an exclusive preserve of the north as there were qualified candidates to rule Nigerians from all over the country.

He also dissociated the Middle Belt from the statement saying: “Even in the north, they are not speaking for us because we are Middle Belters and we are not going to play second fiddle to anybody. All the falsehood they have been adducing about the population, which doesn’t exist, will be exposed with time. But, as far as I am concerned, his statement means he is afraid of a southern Nigerian taking over from Buhari because they know they have committed a lot of atrocities. I want to advise them to get out of that fear and become true Nigerians.”

Also, Ezeife, said the position of the NEF spokesman was consistent with his mannerism. He, however, said the quest for the Nigerian President of Igbo extraction in 2023 should start with getting the November 6 Anambra State election right.

“The Nigerian president of Igbo extraction in 2023 is needed to douse the political tension in the country, however, that is not our problem now. It is important to first ensure a peaceful Anambra State governorship election on November 6. If we get the right governor for Anambra State, we will get our man for the 2023 presidential poll, but if the election is rigged and we lose Anambra State to the wrong person, then it will be difficult for our hope for 2023 to be realised.”

He lauded IPOB for understanding the value of supporting the election by calling off their sit-at-home.

Politics › House Of Reps Mary Odili's Residence Invasion: Reps Ask For Probe by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:06am On Nov 01, 2021
The House of Representatives Committee on Judiciary has called for a discreet investigation to unravel the persons behind the invasion of the residence of Justice Mary Peter-Odili.

The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Onofiok Luke in a statement issued yesterday described he invasion of Peter-Odili’s residence as an assault on the sanctity on the nation’s judiciary.

This just as the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike has issued 48 hour ultimatum to the federal government to prosecute the invaders of the residence of Justice Odili.

Luke said it was mind boggling that in the dusk of 29 October 2021, the Judiciary was once again exposed to public redicule, due to the uncanny manner in which the residence of Justice Odili of the Supreme Court was invaded by law enforcement officials purportedly on an assignment to execute a search warrant, issued by a Magistrate

He noted that the ignoble act was capable of straining the existing relationship between the Judiciary and the Executive arms of our democratic government.

Luke noted that disturbing was the fact that the said warrant was revoked by the issuing Magistrate who had discovered that it was procured by the Applicant on the premises of misrepresented facts.

The lawmaker therefore condemned in totality such ignoble action, and pledged to every effort at ensuring the sanctity of the nation’s judiciary while giving continuous support to the independence of the judiciary.

Luke said: “This unfortunate development is also a wake-up call to tighten administrative and supervisory control over the operations of law enforcement agencies in the country.”

“As a Committee currently interfacing with the judiciary for an improved judicial reform and justice system, we wish to lend our voice once again, to the repeated call by His Lordship; the Honourable Justice Tanko Muhammed CJN, on all Judicial Officers on the need to exercise more caution in issuing ex-parte, conflicting and questionable orders that are capable of bringing disrepute to our Justice system.”

Luke stressed that the siege, was a reminiscent of the 2016 incident, where in the beat of the night, security agencies invaded private residences of judicial officers, which subsequently turned out as an underserved phenomenon, and a dent on the professed independence of the judiciary, and demanding protection for judges.

He added, “On this note, the House of Representative Committee on the Judiciary calls for a discreet investigation to unravel the persons behind this ignoble act, which is capable of straining the existing relationship between the Judiciary and the Executive arms of our democratic government.”

The lawmaker assured that the committee would collaborate with the judiciary and relevant stakeholders to secure the nation’s democracy, since the confidence and respect of citizens in the judiciary may likely wane if incidence of this nature continues unchecked.

Meanwhile, Governor Wike has warned that should anything ill happen to Justice Odili, her husband, former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, the federal government should be held accountable.

Wike, on behalf of Rivers State elders, federal and state lawmakers and council chairmen made the call during a press briefing in Abuja yesterday.

The governor said they have observed a pattern of persistent harassment of the Odili’s family in recent times by agencies of the federal government.

He recalled that on the fateful day the Supreme Court nullified the election victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, hoodlums suspected to be political thugs invaded the residence of Justice Odili, but the federal government did not take any steps to bring the culprits to book.

Governor Wike noted that just recently Dr. Odili had legitimately travelled out of the country for medicals, but on his arrival, his international passport was confiscated for inexplicable reasons by the Immigration Service.

He said initially the federal government had feigned ignorance of the seizure of Odili’s passport. But, after the former governor approached the court to enforce his fundamental human right, the immigration service eventually came up with excuse to justify their act.

Governor Wike described as most worrisome last Friday’s invasion of the residence of Justice Odili by federal government security agencies that allegedly claimed they had a warrant issued by a Magistrate Court to search the property.

The governor noted that though the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice had denied involvement in the siege on Justice Odili’s residence, the people of Rivers State consider his denial as unsatisfactory.

He charged the federal government to within 48 hours apprehend all those involved in the raid of the residence of the Supreme Court justice, the alleged whistle blower and also interrogate the Magistrate who issued the order.

Governor Wike said the people of Rivers State fear that the motive of those who invaded Odili’s residence may have been to assassin the Supreme Court justice, her husband and children.

He declared that the lives of Justice Odili and her husband are important to the people of Rivers State and that the federal government must ensure nothing sinister happen to them.

Efforts by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wole Banjo, to get the students released were unsuccessful, even as he claimed he did not know why they were arrested by the soldiers.

On Friday, students of TASUED embarked on a protest, demanding the unconditional release of their colleagues.

As the students engaged the soldiers in a face-off, the management of the university ordered that they should return home until further notice.

In a statement on Sunday, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Sunday Asefon, berated the Nigerian Army for handing over the students to the EFCC, wondering when the Army turned an arm of the anti-graft agency.

Asefon, while intimating that the Students’ Union President of TASUED, Sodiq Ridwan and four others, who tried to wade into the crisis, have been released, added that others arrested were taken to the EFCC for alleged internet fraud.

The students’ leader recalled issuing a 24-hour ultimatum for the release of the arrested ones on Friday, stating that “the SUG President and four other SUG Executives arrested were released before the expiration of the ultimatum.”

Asefon, who said he did not support internet fraud, held the firm belief that “the Nigerian Army has no business arresting internet fraudsters.”

According to him, the army’s decision to transfer the students to the EFCC was “an afterthought because of the dimension the case has taken.”

He opined that, “the Nigerian Army should be too busy fighting insecurity across the country than pursuing petty criminals and causing unrest in our campuses by creating avoidable and unnecessary drama through an excessive show of force.”

He revealed that an internal individualized enquiry into the allegations would be carried out, assuring that “NANS under my watch will ensure their prompt release if our internal investigation suggests lack of evidence against them.”

Crime › Invictus Obi: Court Orders Interim Forfeiture Of Obinwanne's Abuja Houses, Cars by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:37pm On Oct 31, 2021
The EFCC supported its application with an affidavit sworn by one of its investigators.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the interim forfeiture of houses and cars linked to convicted internet fraudster, Obinwanne George Okeke, also known as Invictus Obi.

Justice Peter Lifu made the order on October 29, 2021 sequel to an ex parte motion filed and argued by the counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Chineye Okezie.

Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the interim forfeiture of houses and cars linked to convicted internet fraudster, Obinwanne George Okeke, also known as Invictus Obi.

Justice Peter Lifu made the order on October 29, 2021 sequel to an ex parte motion filed and argued by the counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Chineye Okezie.

The vehicles are a Toyota Corolla with Registration Number: RBC6238N and an unregistered Toyota Corolla Sport.

According to the EFCC, the properties will be used to restitute foreign victims of Invictus Obi's fraud through the US Consulate.

Justice Lifu said: "I have listened to the submission of the counsel for the applicant vis-a-vis affidavit filed in support. I hold in my considered view that this application is meritorious and ought to be granted

"Consequently this application is hereby granted as prayed."

The judge also ordered that the Commission should publish the order in a widely read newspaper in Nigeria within 14 days for any interested party to show cause why the order should not be permanently made.

He adjourned till November 30 to make a final decision on the forfeiture motion.

The EFCC supported its application with an affidavit sworn by one of its investigators, Usman Abdulhamid.

Abdulhamid noted that Obi had already forfeited N280,555,010, N240,250,904.46 and N40,304,106.19 to the Nigerian Government.

He said: "On further investigation by the Commission, two more properties were traced belonging to the convict, along with two vehicles parked in the residence.

"This application is pertinent in order to restitute the victims of the fraud through the United States of America Consulate.

"This matter is of very urgent public interest and concern as it directly tarnishes the image of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Nigeria among the comity of nations.

"The properties sought to be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria by the Applicant were not procured through legitimate earnings of the Respondent but are reasonably suspected to be part of the fraudulent activities which the Respondent has been convicted for."
