PRESIDENT BUHARI WELCOMES NEW APC LEADERS, COMMENDS MEMBERS FOR ABUJA SHOW OF UNITY

President Muhammadu Buhari formally congratulates the Abdullahi Adamu-led 79-member National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC, that emerged at the just concluded convention in Abuja, saying that the unity of members put on display puts the party on a firmer footing for victory in next year, 2023, General Elections.

The President who returned to the Convention ground at the Eagle Square, Sunday morning, along with the Vice President and the Senate President to witness and celebrate the inauguration of the elected party executives, remarked that the smooth conduct of the election raises the prospect of a mouth-watering APC victory next year.

“The APC Convention hosted this weekend sets the scene for an APC victory in the presidential and general elections next year. It is a victory over naysayers who believed the party was divided but are now disappointed,” said the President.

We believe that it is equally a victory for the president who has ensured unity across all party positions; and it is a victory for the voters of Nigeria who can now be assured of a smooth succession to new leadership in 2023.
What the Convention made clear was how the media has been peddling fake news of division, when the hard reality of unity, cohesion, and indeed personal warmth between members of the party’s leaders – incoming and outgoing – was evident for all to see.

Of course, the blame for this mindset ought rightly to go to the opposition who in all these years had done the work to only divide the country, leading to all manner of separatist agitations. But this is not the wish, nor is it in the character of the citizens, as was clear for everyone to see at the Eagle Square.

When their fake news of disunity was undone by the facts, some in the opposition could not help themselves but take to the newspapers and the airwaves to find another way to shore up their reputations. That some of the APC’s new leadership were once in the opposition was the new line to take to the media, somehow suggesting that those who have left one party should not hold positions in another. Yet, do the Scriptures not teach us of the virtue of sinners who repent and change their ways?

What the Scriptures say less is of sinners who repent, change their tune, and then choose to re-sin in full public view by returning to their former ways. Given that most important leaders of the opposition PDP first left the party before they returned to it, we might expect the media to ensure criticism of them is damning and absolute. It is incredulous that anyone would consider them trustworthy or acceptable candidates for any public office.

The stage is now set for the APC primary elections later this year when the party’s new flag bearers will emerge. No doubt some will attempt to argue the impossible – that an APC primary election is a source of division while an opposition primary election is a source of consensus. But the good voters of Nigeria can see through such acrobatics and know the facts that, when the contests for 2023 come, APC offers a track record of success and leadership, while the opposition has only decades of failure and complicity in response.

The New APC leadership: Stop the false narrative

When a piece of information is dished out, most times we don’t bother to crosscheck before feasting on it and making it go viral. This is one of the challenges of the social and new media era.

My intervention this afternoon is, therefore, to help unsuspecting Nigerians have understanding of the issues at stake on the just-concluded national convention of the ruling party, the APC. And I am making it in good faith to help refresh our memories and put issues in perspective as a former Political Editor.

First, it is totally untrue to hold the view that the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has been handed over to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

To the best of my knowledge, while it is true that the new APC National Chairman had his foundation in the PDP, the mere fact that he and other 10 PDP Senators joined the APC on January 29, 2014, makes him a foundation member, since the party was birthed in February, 2013. The APC had not even won any election at that time. This is clearly different from what happened in the PDP in February 2016, where it made someone who was barely a year old in the party, its National Chairman. Interestingly, it happened at a time the fellow was negotiating his return to the APC.

But in this instance, Senator Adamu has spent eight years out of the nine years existence of the ruling party within the party. That’s one.

Two, the National Secretary, Iyiola Omisore, had his foundation in the Alliance for Democracy, AD, where he was first elected Osun Deputy Governor. That he left for the PDP at some point, cannot make him a complete PDP through and through.

Besides, the two Deputy Chairmen (North and South) Senator Abubakar Kyari and Chief Emma Eneukwu, respectively, have never had anything to do with the PDP. They started in APP and remained there throughout its metamorphosis until it became the APC.

The Organising Secretary, Suleiman Argungu, my very good friend, was the chairman of the ANPP Integrity Group, which took up the gauntlet to reform the party at a time they believed the leadership of the ANPP was being compromised by the ruling PDP. Like the two Deputy Chairmen, he was never in PDP.

Therefore, don’t help them spread the false narrative that APC has been handed over to the PDP. It is a fallacy.

It is a decoy by those who understand the weakness of some readers who will swallow any narrative without asking questions or clarifying issues.

Unfortunately for them, Nigerians are smarter than they think.

TRUE FACTS ON
RE: SOWORE’S LAWYER; MARSHAL ABUBAKAR ARRESTS BY THE NIGERIAN POLICE.

The statement and tweets by Sowore and his cohorts on Social media platforms and his online platform; Sahara Reporters about the arrest of his lawyer, Abubakar are all false and only made to garner cheap public sympathy.
That which was said by him is not the true position of the above matter and when commenting on topical issues as this, caution must be applied.

To start from the beginning, Mr Omoleye Sowore was invited by the office of the Inspector General of Police to answer to a Petition written by the Solicitors to Hon.Prince Ned Nwoko, the law firm of TRIFOLD LAW AND PARTNERS. The petition bordered on criminal acts of defamation of character, injurious falsehood, criminal intimidation, cyber stalking etc. against Hon Prince Dr. Ned Munir Nwoko and targeted at rubbing his name to the mud, tarnishing his reputation contrary to extant provisions of the Penal Code and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

As mentioned above and customarily, Mr Sowore was invited by the Nigerian Police Force to give a statement on the claims made in the Petition but he refused to honour the invitation. This led to his arrest wherein he still refused to give any statement. Apart from his refusal to give a statement regarding the claims against him, under the law, he was to remain in custody until he is either charged to Court or he fulfills the Police Bail conditions. Consequently, his lawyer, one Marshal Abubakar chose to stand as surety for bail for Mr Sowore and he, the lawyer assured the Police to produce Mr Sowore on the next date slated for continuation of the investigation. Now on the said date, neither Mr Sowore nor his lawyer, Abubakar were in attendance at the Police Station. They had been at large since then and it became clear that the lawyer was interfering with the investigations of the Police. Consequently, it then became very necessary to arrest the lawyer in order to get him to produce his client.

With these in full perspective, I put across these posers to-wit: Was the lawyer to Mr Omoleye Sowore right when he stood as a surety on bail for his client? Was the lawyer justified to help his Client escape Police investigation and becoming a fugitive or absconder from a lawful arrest?
The Rules of Professional conduct for Legal Practitioners is against Lawyers aiding their clients to disobey the law or duly constituted authorities e.g the Nigerian Police Force (See Rule 3 of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Lawyers that is instructive to the following fact and I quote:
“In his representation of his client, a lawyer shall not ----- (a) give service or advice to the client which he knows or ought reasonably to know is capable of causing disloyalty to, or breach of, the law, or bringing disrespect to the holder of a judicial office, or involving corruption of holders of any public ...”

I think it is trite to say that the police cannot and have no right whatsoever to arrest anyone for filing a law suit against another in application to the court to determine whether a right exists or not or whether or not it has been infringed upon. Abubakar Marshall (Esq.) with all due respect, acted unprofessionally and motu propriori (on a frolic of his own) when he stood as a surety for his client as he ought to have known that:
(a) Lawyers are admonished from standing as surety for their client or anyone at all, as doing so opens one up to a lot of condescending issues that takes away from your prestige as lawyer e.g arrest, investigation,prosecution etc., as we do not and are not allowed by law to do so in order to prevent us from protracted litigations in a matter we are representing a client on or are seised on .
(b) He ought not to stand bail where he knows or has reasons to believe that his client was or is intending to jump police bail.
(c) He ought to have either procured a surety or bonds person where no surety exists as is permissible by the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 Laws of the Federation, Nigeria.

So for the records, Abubakar Marshall, Esq. was not arrested because he filed a case in court against Prince Ned Nwoko seeking 200 million Naira, for the arrest of Mr Omoleye Sowore. Rather he was in-fact arrested for Standing as a surety for his CLIENT MR OMOLEYE SOWORE and FOR FAILING TO PRODUCE MR SOWORE TO THE POLICE WHENEVER HE WAS NEEDED.

This is the TRUE PERSPECTIVE TO THE ISSUE. Anything short of the above are mere lies and fabrications to garner public sentiments and sway the mind of the public from the fact that Mr Omoleye Sowore committed a crime by going on a crusade of vilification and calumny and by publishing half truths about a Nigerian Citizen in the person of Prince Ned Munir Nwoko who had fundamental human rights enshrined and protected by the CFRN 1999(as amended) e.g ‘Right of Private Life’. Hence, Sowore must be investigated and charged to court for same and prosecuted accordingly.

I will end my statement by saying this; everyone has a fundamental human right and there should be a line where one person’s rights ends and another’s begins. “Your right to swing your arms ends just where the other man’s nose begins.

These are the motivation that keeps me awake on many nights studying books and taking courses on business management and profitability just so my businesses stay profitable enough to fund this vision.

I know, one day, whether while I am strong and agile, or if it be on my deathbed, or, if God will have it, after my lifetime, Rochas Foundation would achieve its vision, and wherever I am at that time, I would dance with seraphic delight that indeed, I lived well.

Ned Nwoko urges greater focus on malaria vaccine research as he Hosts UN, WHO Reps in Delta State

The Chairman of Prince Ned Nwoko Foundation and the founder of Malaria eradication in Africa programme, Hon (Dr) Ned Munir Nwoko has stressed the need for greater public-private sector synergy including multilateral agencies in the quest to achieve a malaria-free Africa. He spoke at the weekend in Idumuje-Ugboko, Delta State when he hosted senior United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO) delegations. The event was part of the Prince Ned Nwoko Foundation’s plan to build wider coalition towards wiping out malaria disease from Nigeria and the African continent at large.

The high caliber officials of the two multilateral organizations hosted by the popular malaria eradicator were the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, the WHO Nigerian Representative, Dr Walter Kazadi Mulombo and many top diplomats, researchers, scholars and several stakeholders in the Foundation’s malaria eradication project.

The billionaire businessman and Pan-African statesman, Prince Ned Nwoko, has been engaging the UN and the WHO together with other stakeholders in his relentless campaign to push the anti-malaria programme in Africa above the threshold of control and palliatives to total eradication through multi-faceted approach. He observed that vaccines were invented against COVID-19 even at a stage when the true causative factors of the pandemic were still a mystery. He reasoned that malaria disease which has mosquito clearly identified as its cause ought to present lesser challenge with regard to vaccine research.

Prince Ned Nwoko stated that the same kind of speed with which the entire world came together to research and invent effective vaccines against COVID-19 can be applied to invent reliable vaccines that would deal a death knell on malaria scourge which is still ravaging Africa and some other parts of the world. He attributed the lukewarm global approach to the malaria challenge to the fact that it is often viewed as Africa’s problem by the developed nations whereas the disease claims over 400,000 lives annually.

According to the former Federal lawmaker, his foundation is collaborating with stakeholders to eradicate malaria in Africa through a combination of steps. These include environmental sanitization including proper waste management, fumigation of the environment and research for an effective anti-malaria vaccine. He also disclosed that his foundation was working closely with relevant lawmakers on a bill which he has forwarded to the National Assembly for the establishment of malaria eradication agency.

Speaking, the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon stated that public-private partnership is vital to achieving lasting result in the anti-malaria campaign. He said that is the same way COVID is destroying the economies of some developed nations that malaria has been ravaging the African countries’ economies for centuries. He called for support for the Prince Ned Nwoko malaria eradication initiative.

The WHO Nigerian Representative, Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo expressed willingness of his office to collaborate with the foundation. He said that the trials of RTS,S vaccine has shown that it provided modest protection against both clinical and severe malaria in young infants. He said the vaccine has been rolled out in pilot projects in three countries in sub-Saharan Africa namel Ghana, Malawi and Kenya.

The foundation is desirous of fostering and fast tracking collaboration with the UN and WHO on the Malaria Project, particularly on the areas of advocacy, vaccine implementation, environmental management and international diplomacy.

It is expected that the WHO would soon endorse the malaria eradication initiative of Ned Nwoko foundation and help to fast track the implementation of the RTSS in Nigeria and other African countries.

Victims Of 2017 Idumuje-Ugboko Mayhem Insist Ifejiokwu, Others Must Face Justice

...Exonerate Ned Nwoko Of Any Involvement In The Prosecution Of Offenders

Four years down the line, victims of the crisis that rocked the agrarian community of Idumuje-Ugboko in Aniocha North LGA of Delta State are still insistent on justice.

The crisis so far claimed the lives of two individuals, one innocent okada rider, Cyprian Kuomolu from Benue State and another, the then Idumuje-Ugboko Land Allocation Committee Secretary, Kennedy Iloh.

Ever since the incident on May 24th, 2017, the case had lingered and the police recently concluded their investigation and promptly charged the masterminds for alleged murder.

However, the arrest and subsequent prosecution of one Okey Ifejiokwu as the alleged principal culprit and six others had been generating some sort of mix reactions on the social media. One of the children of Okey Ifejiokwu, Pamela had made a post allegedly accusing Prince Ned Nwoko of being behind his father's travail, insisting his father was innocent and only being vilified over Ned Nwoko's STARS University land which had also been in contention.

Although Pamela severally contradicted herself in her various social media claims, the trending issue had been a source of concern within the media space, prompting some select media practitioners who were privy to the crisis in 2017 to carry out an assessment of the situation.

In an interview with the Traditional Prime Minister (Iyase) of Idumuje-Ugboko, Chief Chris Chukwuka Ogwu, he explained the genesis of the matter, which he said began when a group of persons came from Lagos to protest the allocation of land to Prince Ned Nwoko for his proposed University project. The protest was before the passing of Obi Albert Okwudimegwu Nwoko 111, the then traditional ruler of Idumuje-Ugboko who approved the land to Ned Nwoko.

He said after the death of Obi Albert Nwoko in February 2017, opposition to the allocated land continued as championed by the late Obi's son, Prince Nonso Justin Nwoko. He said Prince Nonso had insisted that the land was not legitimately allocated to Linas International Ltd for the building of the proposed Sports University by Prince Ned Nwoko.

According to him, "The matter became serious and many of us who refused to bend the truth were regularly threatened. I don't know how to say it, that the late Obi brought a letter announcing to us that Prince Ned Nwoko had requested for 100 hectares of land to build a University in his community and after passing through various processes and was approved by Obi Albert Nwoko himself; I should now be saying a different thing.

"After we read the letter, the Obi asked us to look for land for the project. The late Obi was enthusiastic that if the community had enough land, it would be a thing of joy that in his time he was able to approve it for a project that would grow and develop the economy of the community and earn revenue to the people.

"In a nutshell, we carried out the Obi's orders and we were able to locate the land at the present site of the proposed University. Part of the land was once a subject of litigation between us and Onicha-Ugbo people, and we pursued the matter even up to the Supreme Court and won eventually. We were able to size up the land and got exactly what our son Ned Nwoko needed for the University and 18 Hole International Golf Course.

"We reported back to Obi Albert Nwoko who approved the allocation but insisted that Ned Nwoko and his company, Linas International would pay compensation to the itinerant farmers who were farming on the land on behalf of the community. Ned Nwoko agreed and made the payment among other commitments to the community. On this note, the Obi signed and promptly approved the allocation of the land to Linas International Ltd.

"That was just the genesis until this group of persons came from Lagos to protest the decision of the Obi and his cabinet members on behalf of the community. And then after the Obi's passing in February 2017, the community was thrown into anarchy that resulted in the invasion of the community in May 2017 by thugs imported to unleash terror on those not disposed to their antics. They had claimed our Obi never signed the papers allocating the land to Ned Nwoko. I cannot lie at my age and status as the Prime Minister of the community (the number two in hierarchy). Same goes to the Odogwu, Chief Sunday Edemodu and late Mr. Kennedy Nedu Iloh as the Secretary of the Land Allocation Committee.

"They tried all manner of lies; they eventually came out to say that another of our son needed part of the land for palm plantation. I said to them, but another of our son already had it. Besides, what is more sustainable to our economic development than a University project which would last in perpetuity.

"That was our offence. And then on the 23rd and 24th May, 2017, thugs were imported into the community to reign terror and havoc. On that fateful day, a group of boys accosted me, slapped me and forcefully dragged me to the Palace, saying they were acting on the orders of Prince Nonso Nwoko and the President General of Idumuje-Ugboko Development Union, Mr. Okey Ifejiokwu. After beating me, then the next day, it was all catastrophe in Ugboko, we were mercilessly beaten, our houses were raised down and our cars and other properties vandalised. In the process of the crisis, one Cyprian Kuomolu, an okada rider was shot dead while Mr. Kennedy Iloh later died as a result of the injuries inflicted on him.

"I am still alive but I am not looking like a person again. My house was destroyed and my car totally damaged. Same thing was meted out to the Odogwu who also had been partially disfigured and had remained sickly ever since.

"I am surprised that the defendants are now the ones crying out that they are being witch-hunted. Who is witch-hunting who? When we were shouting and crying, trying to defend ourselves, they felt they had violence and made good their threat by unleashing violence on us.

"Okey Ifejiokwu was the ring leader who mobilized thugs to unleash terror on us. He was the President General and he used his powers wrongly. The evidence is there how he sent out letters, calling for donations to procure arms and ammunition to fight Ned Nwoko and those perceived to be protecting his interest.

"If Ned Nwoko had so much power, we wouldn't have gone to the police. We would have called on him to come to our rescue using his power. What every right thinking Idumuje-Ugboko person is doing right now is asking for justice for us.

"After that act of terror, we reported to the police. We started with our police station here. From there we went to Issele-Uku Divisional Police Headquarters, then to the State Command in Asaba, from there to Zonal Headquarters in Benin and then to Force Headquarters in Abuja. We had all along pursued this case, seeking justice for what they did to us. It is the police that is prosecuting the culprits and not Ned Nwoko. We the victims reported the matter to the police, because the perpetrators of the crime had no authority for terrorism.

"When I saw the post of Okey Ifejiokwu's daughter, Pamela, I laughed. They said she is 19. What does she know? As at the time of this incident, she would probably be 15. She was a child and didn't know anything, that is why she probably doesn't understand the magnitude of his father's actions then.

"All we are asking is justice. Nobody has a right to take a life. Let justice take its course. And let Nobody call on Ned Nwoko again", Iyase Chris Ogwu posited.

In a telephone interview with the eldest son of late Mr. Kennedy Iloh - Nelson Iloh, he said life was snuffed out of his father because they had nobody and were poor.

Nelson Iloh said if he had so much power he would have done something drastic. He however, said that he decided to bury his father with his siblings and allow justice to take its course.

"I don't have anybody, but I am happy with what the police had done so far in this case. All I want to see in the end is justice for my late father, who died from the injuries inflicted on him by his supposed fellow kinsmen and their thugs. My father's offence was serving his community and standing on the path of truth. Pamela or whatever she calls herself is talking because her father is facing trial now for the evil he did to others. Does she know how it feels to lose one's dad and hoping for justice for years now?", Nelson Iloh asked.

In the same vein, the daughter of the Odogwu of Idumuje-Ugboko had made a video asking Pamela and her co-sponsors to stop dragging Prince Ned Nwoko into their problem and face the law for their wicked and inhuman treatment to their fellow kinsmen. She asked Pamela to stop speaking ignorantly, maintaining that evidence had it that her father led the thugs to her own father's (Odogwu) house and others where mindless violence and destructions were carried out.

She equally called out the police to ensure that the prosecution eventually yields result, insisting that it would be on that basis that the wound inflicted on the victims and their families would begin to heal.

"My father is the number three man in the community, but he was treated like a commoner. He was beaten and rendered helpless and incapacitated for believing that the right thing should be done in the community.

"It is only justice that will make us feel better. We can't do anything on our own, we can't take laws into our hand like them, but we have the law as the last arbiter of the common man. That is why we earnestly desire that justice is served in this matter", she said.

Moreover, efforts were made to reach the suspect but we understand he is currently being detained. Meanwhile, every other person involved in the matter had proved difficult to reach before press time.

In a nutshell, analysts believed that hence the matter is already in court undergoing trials, the case should be allowed to run procedurally while justice is awaited for whoever deserves it between the contending parties.

The second and final phase of the 2019 general elections comes up on Saturday, March 9, with Nigerians voting for governors and members of Houses of Assembly in the states.

Let me once again extend my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives or sustained injuries as a result of accidents or criminal violence during the elections.

The onus is once again on qualified people to turn out in large numbers to exercise their civic rights.

With the presidential poll behind us, let us not become complacent, and fail to vote in the gubernatorial poll.

The forthcoming elections are as important for good governance as that of the presidency and the National Assembly.

Indeed, governance at the state level is closer to us, and should touch our lives more directly. That is why it is vital for us to participate in the choice of who governs us at the state levels.

I, therefore, urge you to troop out massively on Saturday to elect your governors and state lawmakers.

As a member of the All Progressives Congress, I recommend those standing on the platform of the party to you, as we are guided by progressive ideals, and we will not disappoint you.

Equally, I urge you to comport yourself properly, as you turn out for the election.

Avoid all deviant behaviours like ballot stuffing, ballot snatching, and any other action that does not conform with best electoral practices.

I assure you that the security agencies will be on hand to protect voters, and ensure that the process is not undermined in anyway.

Let make the gubernatorial polls, much better than the presidential, which Local and International observers have adjudged to be free and fair.

May I repeat my appeal to our young people: do not allow yourselves to be used to cause violence or to break the law or otherwise disturb the peace.

I have pledged decent and credible electoral system for our country. I stand by that promise.

Let us together do the right thing on Saturday, so that the best hands can emerge at the states, and take us faster to the Next Level.
