mastermind2020:
How can I start a small scale fish farming with 250,000?, I intend using Gp tank for a start, I want to know how many gp tanks will b enough for a start and also where I can get a good breed, also what is the cost feeling a fingering from day one to maturity stage.

If u already have everything in place; two 5000ltrs geepee fish tanks, ur water source, pumping machine, standby generator and drainage, then ur 250K should take care of feeding 600 fishes comfortably.
With the current trend in fish feed prices, budget N350 to N400 per fish. U might not spend up to this but it will give u safe landing.
#plz u dnt need to use expensive foreign feeds, u can use the ones made by our indigenous companies (vital feed, topfeed etc)

Can someone advice on effect using different brand of feeds at different level as I'm trying to manage cost and also Pls any advice and comment on TOPFEED Product for 4mm & 6mm

Ur question is not very clear but if u mean changing to another feed brand, then there is no problem at all with that.
N. B. I use topfeed too, its okay. There is no 'best' feed out there.

Hi fellow farmers, its no secret that the recent increase in fuel price will affect every aspect of our lives and operating costs of our farms. Its high time we up our game in terms of price of catfish on our farms. I don't think its a taboo for catfish price to increase because it really baffles me that price of fish has remained virtually constant for years despite the fact the fish feed and other operating costs have constantly been on the rise.
#We should start selling our catfish of 800g and above for N550 - N600 per kilo, while fish below 800g sold for N500 per kilo.
If we all pass the word around and we can be strict on our farms, we should be able to increase the farmgate price of fish. Nothing is impossible and catfish farmers even if on small scale level should be able to live as comfortably as their counterparts with white collar jobs

N. B. Increasing the farmgate price of fish is just one way to alleviate the high operating costs in recent times. We should also look inwards and try to reduce our operating costs in all aspects.

gurus in d house , lets discuss runts, what causes it, must a farmer use hybrid to make profit, is it impossible to make gain using clarias spp, how long should it take to get to table size & any other related issue that comes to mind.

PLS DON'T COME AND PULL ANYONE DOWN, DON'T COME TO MARKET YOUR PRODUCTS ALSO.

Just let us have your take on this.

Abix,Belexyfarms, pumppie, juve, every fish farmers pls lets read your view point, it will give a lot of education to all

I've been away frm nairaland agric section for a while and hardly comment due to my very busy schedule lately; just decided to check agric section today and comment since my bro excelsior mentioned me.
RUNTS..... From the perspective of where u take it from, could mean several things. I will just speak generally.
Runts could be caused by the farmer, for example not feeding well (especially when still young), poor water mgt, poor selection of broodstock etc. Or it could be inherent in d fish; a fish genetically not meant to be big in size.
Personally i don't think a farmer MUST use hybrid before he/she makes profit. Your pure clarias specie can make bountiful profits too; it all depends on ur farm practices and methods.
As regards time to rear fish to tablesize, there's so many factors involved. You have to consider ur target size/weight. Frequency of feeding, farm practices, genetic make-up of the fish, what stage of fish was stocked etc will all determine how long ur fish will be reared. From personal experience on my farm i would say between 4months - 6months is ideal. Plz note that the longer u keep ur fish, the bigger they get. Consider ur target market/customers/locality too. Some don't like to buy big fish and prefer smaller table size fish.

Fish, not fishes. As the fish grow in size they increase in weight + the weight of the water and coupled with the wear and tear over time, think that tarpaulin will hold out?

#just to correct that notion; plural of fish can either be fish or fishes. Check the dictionary for confirmation.
Tarpaulin ponds are stronger than what u just portrayed. I have used them for years on a commercial scale.

Hi, fellow and great farmers, i am sure we have all noticed the sudden increase in prices of all commodities in the country in recent times, not to talk of the incessant fuel crisis that also has negative impacts on running our farms on a day to day basis. .
Directly and indirectly, it has affected fish farming and farmers as a whole.
In view of this, it is necessary that fish farmers increase the price of their fish to be able to meet up with the increase in cost of living and cost of farming in Nigeria . Usually the price of fish (1kg ), averagely sells at N500 per kilo in Lagos on our farms. This price has be static for so long despite the rising costs of farming. Sometimes its even less than N500 per kilo, it all depends on market factors at any point in time.
Nothing stops us from selling bulk sales at N600 per kilo to market women! Yes.... This will cushion the effects of increased cost of production. We can only do this with one voice (as farmers) and with deep resolve.
Also farmers should try as much as possible to reduce the cost of farming to the barest minimum so as to further widen their profit margin and also try to increase their turn over rate and farm capacities.
Let us not labour in vain. We should also be able to enjoy the fruits of our labour and be able to live as comfortably; even more comfortably than people with white collar jobs. REMEMBER THAT NO FARMER, NO NATION.

Please what options exist for someone setting up a fish farm in a location without a good drainage system? I have a landed property I'm interested in setting up a fish farm but no gutters exist in the area and I don't have the resources to start constructing one, what's the option I got?

You can set up a recirculatory system of fish pond.
A little search on google will give you a vague idea of what its about.
If u are just intending to rear very few number of fishes for fun or family consumption, u can discharge the waste water into ur compound, it will sink away or you can dig a very deep pit/well/soakaway and discharge the water into it. Plz dnt dig such pits where u have nearby wells of neighbours bcoz it will pollute their well water and they will start complaining.

Congrats... Its fun rearing fish and i wish u success cheesy
What is d size of ur pond? 1500 fishes from the look of the pond size in d pix is too crowded/over stocked.
Also how many ponds do u have? Just incase u dont have an additional one already, you will need one to sort ur fishes into as they grow.

Does any one know about fish rearing? i just started this business. Recently, i noticed the fishes in my pond raised their head and open their mouths maybe for oxygen, i dont know. i changed the water thinking its dirty and does not contain enough oxygen for them to breath. but still, their heads are still up. what can be the course for that? pls, ur comment and advise is needed.

Do u mean they stand upright in d water and gasp for air or do they just swim to the surface open their mouth and swim away actively? The second scenerio is normal and also fingerlings/juveniles tend to just stay in one spot as if upright after heavy feeding.
If ur fishes are sick and diseased or oxygen concentration is low or water severely polluted especially wt ammonia , they might just stand 'upright' in one place

After the flies have finished laying their eggs. cover the bowl with something and place under a shaded area. Protect it from ants, lizards, chickens etc. I used chicken wire to cover them and finally cover with zinc. The chicken wire will prevent lizards and the zinc will stop chickens. I placed the growing bowls on a raised platform. The little kerosene I sprayed on the platform will stop ants. In few hours time you’ll see some small maggots. Leave them for 5 days before you harvest.

Harvesting
Spread net over a bowl (harvesting bowl).

Nice write up and pics. How long does one need to wait for the flies to finish laying before covering up the growing bowl?
