Adesiji77: Thanks for your response. The project is not mine but belongs to a colleague's client. The client is looking at 8 earthen ponds for the 50,000 juveniles.
Please can you break the "N15m for 6 months" down for me to say, how much kg of feeds they will consume weekly/monthly at Month 1, Month 2, etc and the associated monthly costs (kg times cost per unit) to enable prepare a reasonable cashflow projection.
Cc: daclemx, opeaceo, FarmTech I'm sorry, i cant really say how much they will consume daily, weekly or monthly. Maybe others can help. I usually feed my fishes to satiation at each meal and I have never used the feeding per body weight method to feed my fishes which would have enabled me to answer your question. In my own case, the feed quantity varies depending on the water quality at the time of feeding, time of the day and batch of fish stocked. But you will need about 60 tonnes of feed to feed the number of fishes you are talking about. |

sirfarouk: @BELEXYFARMS How much does fingerlings cost and what size of collapsible tank can cater for about 300 fishes? It can cost between N10 to 15. It all depends on the seller. In Lagos, its usually N10 though. A 12ft × 8ft × 3ft depth pond will comfortably take about 350 fishes. |

WhoBeThisMan: Oga belexyfarms abeg no mind that guy, kpako dey come form ajebutter for here. Comot for road jor. Oga belexy, how much do they buy millange now? How much does it cost to raise them to millange level? And is the sales of millange still good? Melange is between N370 to N400 per kilo now. It all depends on your bargaining power and your location. It will cost you about N150 per fish to raise to melange level at 3months; could be way less than this if you get a good breed of fish and if your farm practices are on point. Yes, melange farming is good but try to rear a lot at once. Your profit comes from the turnover rate. |

Atlantian: No, but I damn well know they are not from this kind of dirty place. The more you talk, the more you sound ignorant and its obvious you dont know anything about fish farming. Well just to educate you a bit : fish ponds cannot be 'sparkling' clean. There are different types of ponds. Some small fish ponds dat are plastic tanks in the back yard can be clean. Some fish ponds that use the recirculatory system will be 'sparkling' clean too because thats intensive fish farming. Besides, after the OP harvests the fishes, the pond will be washed and treated in preparation for the next stocking of small fish (fingerlings). What you are seeing here is the pond at its peak period; those fishes look ready for harvesting. Generally fish ponds are fertilized with manure (poultry manure or cow dung) before the fish are stocked in the pond. Non-organic fertilizer can also be used. The manure helps to fertilize the ponds and the growth of algae shows the pond is fertilized. Visit any big fish farm especially the people that use earthen ponds so that you will be more informed of how they prepare their pond for stocking. For your information, theres something called integrated farming whereby you raise different lifestock together. On very big farms in some countries, the waste from poultry (chicken poo ), pig poo etc are directed into the fish pond to serve as food for the fishes. Let us encourage the OP with our words instead of us trying to discourage him. He is just trying to make a honest living with what he is doing. |

Please, how much will it cost to feed 50,000 juveniles for 6 months? What is the average consumption like daily/weekly/monthly? What other costs should be factored in for a project of this size? I want to work on a cashflow projection for a proposed fish farm and your input would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Thats a massive number of fishes. The amount of feed consumed daily or weekly will change as they grow. It will cost abt 15 million naira to feed 50,000 fishes for 6 months. I am assuming you are using earthen ponds for this right? |
Agriculture › Re: A Nairalander Managing His Little Fish Pond- Self-employed by BELEXYFARMS(m): 10:11pm On Aug 08, 2015 |
aflyingbird: good job, but the pond and water look dirty. water level in the pond is low too Water level is low because he is doing some work in the pond.... Either sorting, harvesting or simply changing the water. Thats the way a used fertilized pond will look like. It cannot be 'sparkling clean'. U will see algae on the walls which in itself is not bad but rather advantageous to the fishes. |

Ofcourse he is a fraudster. I pointed this out sometime ago on a fish thread. The fool was deceiving people and advertising fish feed with 70% crude protein. I know people would have fallen for his scam.
What annoys me the most is that nairaland authorities are doing nothing about all this fraudsters on their site. Nairaland has become a haven for fraudsters. So much fraudsters advertising sales of admission forms into school of nursing and other tertiary institutions and yet nothin is done about all this. They need to have a dedicated moderator that goes round forums deleting and blocking frausters. |

Calyb: @Apitch, you can not tell the actual length of a pond on an image. Proper measurement was taken before digging was carried out. Don't worry, before friday, you will start to see the wonders been done. 10ftx10ft concrete pond will comfortably accomodate 1000 catfish from fingerlings to adult stage. Though, thanks for the recommendation. Hello sir, good job you are doing there and more blessings on ur endeavours. Just thought i should also give my observations since you gave us permission to air our thoughts/observation. Your 10*10*4 pond would NOT comfortable take 1000 fingerlings to adulthood unless you are doing regular/almost constant flow through. Yes, you can stock a thousand in that but you will not get optimal growth and the fishes will be stunted, not to talk of the regular illnesses that will arise because of over-crowding. A point will come that even within a day of changing water, the water becomes so polluted and saturated wt ammonia and carbondioxide that the fishes will not eat maximally the next day. I have bigger ponds than yours and i have experiened what i am telling you. I read somewhere in one of ur comments that ur aim is an average weight of 1kg fish in 3 - 4months, well to be honest it might not really be possible especially since u are stocking from fingerlings. Truthfully, some will even be bigger than 1.2kg at 4months but most of ur fishes will be well below that range and when u take the average, u might not hit 1kg. Forget all the stories u av heard. When u start the fish farming you will see that theory/internet fairy tales are completely different from reality. If u really want that size of fish, then definitely you should NOT put 1000 in that pond and you will need to be doing flow through regularly to get optimal growth of 1kg in the 3 - 4months u av targetted, provided you get very good seeds, preferably the 1st sorting from the spawning. All the best sir. Ciao. |
