ok well the 200cm length is divided into 5 partitions(pens) of 40cm. Now the male should occupy 2 pens since space will be needed for mating and the partition separating these pens should have a passenge way of 15 x 15 cm to allow movement btw both pens. The remaining three pens shouldnt have this passage becos the females need to occupy individual pen when they litter. I go try post pic later.

I think there is someone on nairaland who produces it locally, i can remember seeing an advert once. I cant remember the person. I also know that one can import the various componets from China. Its really very expensive and it will work better with solar powerd panels to boycott issues wt NEPA.

This changing water every 7 days sounds so scary.
Reason for changing water is to get rid of the wastes (ammonia, carbondioxide, fish poo, feed wastes etc) and to also provide fresh oxygenated water for the fishes. Using an aerator only oxygenates the water, it doesnt get rid of wastes. Those wastes i mentioned up there can make ur fishes do so poorly. Ur fishes might not die, but they wont do as well as the fishes of someone who changes water regularly or who does flow through and they would most likely be so stunted in growth.
If u are really bent on doing fish farming as a business, u should look into the recirculatory system since regular supply of water and drainage is a major challenge in ur area. Another option is to greatly reduce the number of fishes u want to stock and use a very big pond so that u dont have to change water regulary but even at that, u will still not derive maximum satisfaction in the harvest.

Here is the cage dimension for a family:
height= 40cm, width= 60cm, lenght= 200cm and four partitions of 40cm with a passage way of abouth 15 x 15 cm. The partition separating the male from females shouldnt have a passage way. Be sure to use the right materials becos grasscutters gnaw on eveeything.

Okay, i have seen the dimemsions. I really dont understand this passage way of 15cm×15cm. Can u explain better and possibly with pictures please.

Since female grsscuttrs are induced ovulators, the continuos presence of a male among females could interfere with their ovulatory cycle. Only introduce the females to the male when they are ready to mate. Metal cages are expensive. If you havent started construction then i suggest you use a mix of wood and mesh wire but if you have started or prefer metal cage then make sure the mesh size isnt bigger than 1/2 x 1/2 inches so as to prevent new borns from falling through and also lay another smaller size mesh wire on the floor of the cage to prevent feed waste. Allow about 3-4inches of space between ground and floor of cage for collecting waste. I will try to post a pic.

If you can target 4 and half months, it is fine. You will sell the ones that did not grow well and use the money to feed the ones that grows well. Atimes, the ones that did not grow very well gives me the return on investment or almost or half. As soon as you sell them off, u stock another set.

Yes, you can do flow through in any pond (concrete/tarpaulin/plastic). Just construct ur outlet in such a way that it can do flow through. The problem is u will spend a fortune powering your generator to pump water for flow through, so you just have to be selective when to do flow through. Also make sure u av a good drainage in ur area because of the volume of water that is going to be discharged over time.

The fact is out of that 11,000 pieces...the good ones may not be more than 3000 pieces. It is enough to bring back the return on your investment. Others will be reared for 4 1/2 to 5months after which I will sell them off.

Yes bro, dats very true. The very good ones are just like 20% to 30% from what I have noticed on my farm but I have been rearing all to 5months (both good and bad ones) which to me is not very wise of me to have been doing bcoz the time and effort one should have used on the very good fast growing ones are now used on the ones dat wont do too well. My strategy now is to sell of the slow growing ones at melange stage and then focus on the rest till 5months.

Thats nice. The fingerlings we buy in lagos are now so tiny in size... The hatchers seem to be selling them at smaller sizes now than what i was used to. I envy you guys with your regular flow through, nothing is as good as having that flow through. I have achieved something like that in some of the ponds where i do partial flow through, but thats after I have selected the best stock of the fishes to rear in that particular pond. Running flow through is damn expensive for me because I use mostly generator to pump water. Do u also practice stocking more than you intend to rear and then keeping only the fast growers till harvest? For example stocking 10K fingerlings and then selecting the best fast growing 5K - 6K which u will rear for 5 - 6months (the remaining 4K slow growing fishes would have been sold off at melange stage).

All things cannot be equal. All other things being equal, there is no fixed KG to attain within those month. However, if the seed is alright and you are able to manage your farm very well, then be expecting an AVERGAGE of 2.0 to 2.5KG in 6months. 6months is a very long period of time so getting 1KG plus is not only a waste of money but also a waste of time. 1KG fish is not a fish at all, it is called smallest here...small start from 1.2 to 1.3 KG....thus, 20/21/22 pieces of fish must weigh 25KG

Sir, with average weight of 2kg - 2.5kg of all the fishes stocked within the 6months rearing time frame , I presume this is when you stock from juvenile stage and u practice 24hrs flow through in your earthen pond. Correct me if i am mistaken.

1. TRAINING

Hello sir, please is there any way u can guide me in building some grasscutter pens? Also please i would love to visit ur farm one day to just see things and learn from u and probably buy a colony of grass cutters sir. If its possible to have your number, i will really appreciate it sir.

2. We feed them 3 times a day.
3. We change their water everyday for all the ponds in the morning.
4. We feed them a bag of Coppens 6mm for about 3 weeks (to me that's not feeding well for about 500 fishes)
5. Pond-1 holds 250, Pond-2, 150, Pond-3 150 fishes.
6. Water level is usually higher than in the picture

I have been told to give them fish tonic, but i don't know which brand to buy.

(1)Changing water everyday is stressful for the fishes bcoz it takes sometime before they will adjust to the new water and eat maximally; remember they have to adjust to the sudden change in water level, temperature, pH, and other things.

(2) 250 fishes in 1500ltrs tank is way over stocked. Ur fishes have reached the maximum carrying capacity of ur tank and will no more grow as expected.

(3) bcoz they av reached the maximum carrying capacity of the tank, the water quickly becomes uninhabitable for them especially once they have fed and start excreting wastes and this will lead to slow digestion and utilisation of the feed eaten.

(4) since u change ur water daily, ur fishes will vomit the feed fed the previous night bcoz it will not be digested on time before u change the water again. This happens if u feed late and then change the water very early in the morning.

It will be my opinion not to spend further money on them if u feel they are not growing as expected because the seeds could also be bad from the start; though i dnt knw the size and weight of ur fish but since u urself have expressed displeasure in their size then they are probably very small. It might be best to just sell them off very soon and restock again, but try to get you seeds from a reputable source because it helps a lot.

interesting discussions about melange farming. Mind you, if u are gonna get average weight of 500g in 3 months, then you must av hatched urself and stocked the best 5000pcs from the over 20, 000 fries hatched, coupled with vigorous water mgt and intense feeding. If not, then you are ON YOUR OWN.
Melange can be as low as N350 per kilo to as high as N400 (depending on their sizes and the quantity available for sale, and the group of people buying them).

I get your point. I also dont encourage newbies to start wt a lot of fishes as 'backyard' farmers. Especially those who have only heard the good side of fish farming on the internet and who now decide to invest all their life savings into setting it up because they dream of the so-called 'millions' they will reap. But this person is doing it on an industrial scale. Not backyard farming and not 'experimenting' . I also want to presume that he has certified trusted consultants on site and farm managers handling the project and the info he is getting from nairaland is just to compare notes and for his own personal knowledge and not the info he wants to use to start it on his own. In addition to that, i believe that his consultants have given him the pros and cons of the business and he has chosen to forge ahead.

40ft *40ft *4ft earthen pond will be appropriate.
#but it also depends on the type of earthen pond. Is it a 24hrs flow-through earthen pond or a stagnant pond? That will ultimately help you know the appropriate stocking density.

Please fellow farmers, advice me on what to plant on THREE plots of land that will yield appreciable profit and will be easy to sell. I intend to get a mallam to do the cultivation, planting and grooming of the land; or is there any nairalander that offers such services? How much should i pay the Mallam or should the salary be on profit percentages? Please offer some advice and tips or share your experiences if you have been involved in such a thing before.

N.B. The land is in Lagos and in a residential area. The soil is fertile and loamy. A well will be the source of water to water the plants.
