Politics2011 Pressdential Election: President Jonathan Should Be A Party Man by benchuks(op): 1:07pm On Aug 22, 2010
2011 PRESSDENTIAL ELECTION: PRESIDENT JONATHAN SHOULD BE A PARTY MAN.

The most talked about issue in Nigeria today is the issue of who becomes the 15th president of most populous black nation on earth on May 29, 2011. As expected, there are many political alignment, re-alignment and maneuvering as the race for the most influential African leader rages on. O f great importance is about who becomes the standard bearer of the acclaimed “biggest party in Africa”, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).As it stands now, two contenders have declared their intention of clinching the party’s ticket and interestingly, both are from the Northern part of the country, General Babangida (former military president) and the former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar, with the latter threatening as true to his character, court action if his party denies him the opportunity to test his popularity based on the returnee rule in the party’s constitution. Also, in the opposition camp, the incumbent Governor of Kano state, Mallam Shekaraue has similarly declared his intention to fly his party’s flag. In no distant time, many contenders and pretenders will soon declare and the political battle will be fought among all the gladiators.
But of more important to the whole issue of 2011 presidential election is whether the incumbent president will contest or not, though his body language coupled with his aides’ outbursts in recent times strongly suggest that Dr Jonathan will want to stay beyond 2011. Also, the continuous pressure from leaders of south-south geo-graphical zone where president Jonathan comes from to contest will significantly motivate him to toy with the idea of contesting because to them, the circumstances that led to ascension of Dr Jonathan as the substantive president of Nigeria is a golden opportunity the zone will not want to slip off their hand so as to heal the wound of injustice there have suffered from various successive governments in Nigeria.  Again, president Jonathan being an African, will want to act true to his African nature because virtually all African leaders are power conscious with just one exception, legend Nelson Madiba Mandela. Similarly, the level of insincerity and sycophancy among political appointees around the president will not allowed him to objectively analyze the current political situation in Nigeria and make a wise choice on whether to contest or not.
Interestingly, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the ruling party which is the highest decision making organ of the party has spoken with the both side of the mouth by declaring that zoning principle will remain and that the president equally has a right to vie for any post is to say the least, cowardly. This is so because all political positions in Nigeria are all product of PDP zoning arrangement in which the current PDP national executives and President Jonathan himself a beneficiary of PDP zoning arrangement. To this end, I join other patriotic and well-meaning Nigerians to urge Dr Jonathan not to push his luck too far by entertaining the thought of contesting  next year’s presidential election but rather, see to it that credible candidate from the Northern part of the country emerges as PDP presidential candidate and not the likes of former leaders, who all contributed to our woes as nation. It is equally honourable for our president to be a party man and respect the rules of the party without bias or sentiment. This singular act alone will place him in the same mould with our living legend, Mandela and this will go a long way to show that African leaders are men and women of honour, integrity and principle.

PoliticsRe: Pls,pray For Yar'dua: by benchuks(op): 3:08pm On Feb 25, 2010
I strongly believe this President is in such a condition that he cannot take the decision to step down.
I'd rather we identify the elements holding unto power while hiding behind the President.
Those are the real enemy of Nigeria, not The President.

With this understanding and no matter how bad I feel at the recent events in the country, I believe in praying for our President as an individual passing through a difficult time in the midst of wolves who care nothing about him, but their miserable, selfish selves.

Father in heaven, mercy, mercy, have mercy on our President. There is nothing, absolutely nothing too difficult for you to do. I join all your children praying for him, break the chains that hold him bound and heal him. Do it Father, let mercy triumph over judgment, and let the bones rise again.
Thank You Father. To You, not to us, to You be the glory for ever in Jesus Name.
Amen

@Cicero,tanx for your prayer, atleast I have seen someone who really understand the situation of our president.

@ rasputin,I think u need to be careful wit ur choice of words, sickness is something beyond human control and be reminded that u're not immune from it.In my post I made it clear that our problem has been that of poor leadership and visionless leaders,Yar'dua included.I went further to describe his choice as (S)election, All these goes to show that i'm not a fan or supporter of Yardua but someone who feels that despite all these,he needs our support and luve at this his critical point in his life, as for your insults and others,i'm not moved,
PoliticsPls,pray For Yar'dua: by benchuks(op): 12:15am On Feb 25, 2010
I have followed with keen interest on the discussions about the constitutionality of President's action since he left for medical trip abroad and the need to have someone act on his behalf pending wen he recovers fully. All the contributions goes to show how Nigerians are passionate about their country despite the level of poor and visionless leaders.
However, since then, nairalanders have not deem it fit to open a topic where people will wish our ailing president well because there's power in spoken words so says the holy book but what we witnessed were and are still curses and curses on the man we all (s)elected to be our president. This is nt fair to the man because this is the time he needs our support and prayers more than ever before.
So pls, wish president Yar'dua well and remember him in your prayers.
PoliticsNigeria Back On Reckoning In Comity Of Nations by benchuks(op): 11:09pm On Feb 21, 2010
I was filled with joy watching Thisday award geared towards celebrating Nigeria's 50yrs as an independent nation.my joy was as a result of calliber of people that graced the occassion which included fmr presidents Bush,Kuffor,ex- prime minister Blair and American immediate past secretary of state Rice.Rice in her speach described Africa as a continent with great potentials and went further to describe Nigeria as a country with extra-ordinary potential and urge us to talkless and act more so as to restore the hope of all black people all over the globe. From her response to a question,it was obvious that Nigeria will soon be removed from terror watch list of US.To Thisday,i say bravo and to my fellow Nigerians,a new dawn has come.

PoliticsAtiku In The Eye Of Nigerians by benchuks(op): 10:21pm On Jun 17, 2009
Betrayal Of Electorate Trust:Atiku In The Eye Of Nigerians

I will start by saying categorically that I was one of the very many of Turaki of Adamawa supporters and sympathizer during his fight for political survival with his boss, former president Obasanjo.I, just like millions of other Nigerians, felt that Atiku does not deserve the various abuses, insult, and humiliations that was meted to him and our support for him was purely borne out of our belief in fair play, equity and justice, irrespective of whose ox is gored. Personally, I vowed that if eventually Obasanjo through the instrumentality of INEC bared or stopped him from contesting the last elections, I will write Atiku and AC name on the ballot paper and cast it into the ballot box just to satisfy my conviction, notminding that it will amount to nothing. Finally justice prevailed and supreme court came to his rescue and his supporters, and he contested in the 2007 general elections eventhough ,the judgement that paved way for his elegilibility for the election was belated .As such, it substantially affected his chances in the said election as was attested to by the minority judgement of one of the supreme court justice in his final election judgement.
However, while some of us was still remembering with nostalgia, the pre 2007 election build up viz-viz Atiku’s political struggle for relevance, then came the shock that rendered many of his supporters speechless and confused. His visit to his former tormentor, and prosecutor, Olusegun Obasanjo in his house in Ota,Ogun state. One of his many supporters called and asked me, ‘what could have made Turaki to embark on such suicidal mission, though they say in politics, there is no permanent enemy but interest”? I could not answer the question until Gen. Buhari came out to say that Atiku fight with his boss was never based on ideology but selfish and personal .That was when I became abreast of the whole scenario and agreed that I, just like many of his supporters were deceived .Thank God we are wiser today, atleast before the next election.
Furthermore, with more knocks and revelations coming in different quarters over Atiku desperation to become Nigerian president, it is now obvious that he is unfit to lead us as a nation because he lacks character, principle and integrity. I now agree with my friend who once told me immediately after the 2007 election that God used Obasanjo to stop characters like Atiku to preside over our affairs. As I said in the beginning, my support for him(Atiku), was as a result of the crude method adopted by his boss to stop him and I felt it was wrong and unjust, but the truth must be told, Atiku is yet to clear himself from various corruption allegations levied against him both within and outside Nigeria.
Finally,Nigerians are much more wiser than they were in 2007 and as such, people who lack character, principle, and integrity as has shown by Turaki, will not get an inch near our leadership positions. In all, the race for 2011 election has begun with one down and out(Atiku), with many of his likes to follow.
PoliticsRe: Adeboye Wins Living Legend Polls by benchuks(m): 6:49pm On Jun 17, 2009
honestly, the five really deserve the honour.I am particularly happy for Ojukwu because I initially thought that Nigerians will be skeptical of voting for him with regard to his role in the Biafran war.But thank God,Nigerians are decerning and intelligent people who exactly knew the history of the war and how it became imperative for Ojukwu to declare the republic of Biafra then.

PoliticsExit Of Soludo From Cbn:matters Arising by benchuks(op): 6:09pm On Jun 06, 2009
.Exit Of Soludo From CBN:Matters Arising

Prof.Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the immediate past Governor of the Central bank of Nigeria(CBN), came into the consciousness of many Nigerians when he was first appointed the economic adviser to the then president Obasanjo, before his eventual elevation to the office of the CBN Governor. The man, for the past five years has become a household name as a result of his unprecedented reforms in the economic/financial sectors of Nigerian economy. He pioneered the banking sector reform, insurance sector reform, maintained inflation rate to an appreciable digit, introduced fiscal policy regulation and supervision among various other reforms he carried out during his days as CBN helmsman.Today, the banking sector is the second employer of labour after government.Again, it was his reform in the banking sector that paved the way for our banks to compete favourably outside the shores of Nigeria and Ghana and other African countries are good example. The credit of these achievement must go to this young and visionary administrator/economist.He came into the political-economic scene when our economy was at its lowest ebb and our financial sector in comatose. He pursued his reform agenda with great passion, zeal, determination and courage, not minding whose ox was gored and with the total support of the former president, he succeeded where others before him had failed woefully. All these prompted our president, Y’adua to recently praised Soludo to high heavens during the 50 years anniversary of CBN as an institution. In the said occasion, Mr president declared that ‘ if not for the Soludo’s fore-sightedness in the banking sector reform, Nigeria would have been worst hit by the current economic recession/meltdown’.
However, the question begging for an answer is that if our president could made the above statement/testimony over Soludo’s performance, what then could have informed his decision to do away with such a man with great vision that saved us from the worst effect of economic meltdown? Going by the information from the grape vine, Mr president was put under great intense pressure not to renew Soludo’s tenure as CBN Governor because of the clamour from his kinsmen to have one of their own as CBN helmsman, irrespective of his credentials and antecedent, and sadly, this they have gotten in the person of Mr. Sanusi Lamido Aminu, as the new CBN Governor. What a country where primordial ethnic sentiments supersedes competence and merit. In arriving at the choice of Mr.Sanusi, one is tempted to ask what informed his choice as a good replacement to Soludo? Will he be able to sustain the tempo and step into the shoes left behind by Prof. Soludo who is a first class economist, consultant to International Monetary Fund(IMF) and the World bank? Indeed, these are my worries, my fear, my concern and apprehension with regards to the economic growth and development of our dear country, Nigeria!
Similarly, looking at Mr.Sanusi’s profile, he equally had his first and second degrees in economics and have spent a relative number of years in the banking sector, which climaxed with his appointment as the Group Managing Director(GMD) of First bank early this year. Asides this, he is equally a scholar in Sharia and Islamic studies and also, a former graduate assistant lecturer in his Alma-Ata, ABU. I wish him all the best in his new assignment and pray that he succeeds, just like Soludo and even surpass Soludo’s achievements.
Finally, to the phenomenon and revolutionist, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, you came, you saw and you conquered. Nigerians are indeed grateful for all your accomplishments and I know that the legacy you left behind will continue to bear testimony to that effect. I equally urge you to always make yourself available for the future service to our fatherland, just as Mr.president said in his commendation letter to you.
