In an audio file posted on a Christian satellite TV channel, prince Abdullah al-Sabah declared his faith in Jesus Christ. Muslims have attacked him saying “he isn’t a member of the royal family” According to reports, a Kuwaiti royal prince has become a follower of Jesus Christ. In an audio file posted with his name, he affirms that if he is killed because of a recording he made where he talks about his conversion, he firmly believes that he will meet Jesus Christ face-to-face. The news comes from Middle Eastern sources which state that al-Haqiqa – a Christian satellite TV channel in Arabic that transmits Christian religious programmes – broadcast an audio file attributed to the Kuwaiti prince, identified as Abdullah al-Sabah. The al-Sabahs are the royal family of Kuwait, a country rich in oil. The name Abdullah (servant of God) frequently appears in the Emir’s family tree. In his audio file, Abdullah declared: “First of all, I fully agree with the distribution of this audio file and I now declare that if they kill me because of it, then I will appear before Jesus Christ and be with him for all eternity.” In this statement, the prince demonstrates his awareness of the fate in store for a martyr of the faith, according to Christian doctrine. The television channel stated that Abdullah is a member of the royal family, and that he recently renounced his faith in Islam and became a Christian, without specifying which particular branch of Christianity he had chosen. After stating his full name, the prince declared: “I will accept whatever they do to me, because the truth in the Bible has guided me towards the right path.” In the audio file, Abdullah talks about the Islamic groups that are winning the elections in Egypt and declares: “Islamic communities have always wanted to attack in different parts of the world but God has preserved the world and still protects it. This is why we have recently seen disagreements appearing among Islamic groups who are now fighting with each other. They are about to divide further into different groups.” Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." Liberia’s main public university said on Wednesday all 25,000 applicants for the new academic year had failed its entrance exam, prompting the president to describe poor education standards in the impoverished nation as a “national emergency”. The University of Liberia, which educates more than half of the country’s students in the capital Monrovia, said it had been forced to admit 1,600 failed candidates for the new term which begins next month. “None of the 25,000 students who sat the test (obtained) the required points,” said university vice-president Ansu Sonii. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf made an impromptu call at the university to discuss the failure, her office said in a statement, which described the situation as “alarming” and confirmation of a recent statement by the president that “the educational system is a mess”. “Why are the students of the system not performing to the standards expected? Why are they not comparative with those in other countries?” Sirleaf demanded as she met university authorities on Tuesday, according to the statement. The president urged the country to see the poor performance of the candidates as a “national emergency”, the statement added, and called on “all Liberians, irrespective of political background” to tackle the issue of dire standards in schools. Sirleaf was awarded the Nobel peace prize for her part in ending Liberia’s ruinous back-to-back civil wars in 2003, but has been criticised for her failure to improve teaching since she took office three years later. She admitted that the situation was “embarrassing” for Liberia. “The problem is not just taking the test and failing. The problem is where they are coming from — so we have to go into those high schools, into those elementary schools and see what is lacking and what we can do about it,” Sirleaf was quoted as saying in the statement. University president Emmet A. Dennis said the institution had lowered the pass mark to allow in 1,600 undergraduates and postgraduates. Liberia is still recovering from 14 years of civil war that ended in 2003 and left the west African nation in ruins. Widespread poverty has led to a large proportion of parents putting their children to work rather than sending them to school, according to various studies by the United Nations and other organisations. Although there are a handful of private higher education establishments and another tiny state-run university, in practice more than 90 percent of the country’s publicly-educated undergraduates go to the University of Liberia. The Liberian parliament’s education committee chairman Bill Tuaway blamed poor teaching for the failure, the first time in Liberia’s history that no student has passed. “This is a clear indication that the quality of education in Liberia is very bad. This shows how our teachers don’t teach well,” he told reporters in Monrovia. READ MORE: http://news.naij.com/45440.html

FG appoints Citigroup, Vetiva to manage sale of Enterprise Bank on July 19, 2013 at 12:09 am in Business By MICHAEL EBOH with Agency Report The Federal Government has commenced the sale of the AMCON-owned banks, with the appointment of Citigroup and Vetiva Capital to manage the sale of one of the banks — Enterprise Bank Limited. In an interview, Mr. Mustapha Chike-Obi, Chief Executive Officer, AMCON, said Citigroup and Vetiva will manage the 100 per cent sale of the bank, while the sale of the other two — Mainstreet Bank Limited and Keystone Bank — will hold in the next couple of weeks. He said the appointment is a reflection of the fact that AMCON is on track with its timeline to complete the sale of all three banks by the third quarter of next year. Afribank, Spring Bank and Bank PHB, where nationalised in 2011 when they failed to find new investors before a recapitalisation deadline. AMCON then recapitalised the three banks and changed their names to Mainstreet, Enterprise Bank and Keystone Bank, respectively. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/fg-appoints-citigroup-vetiva-to-manage-sale-of-enterprise-bank/ |
on July 19, 2013 at 3:10 am in Sports *It’s possible —Statistician Three university lecturers on Thursday expressed mixed feelings over the ongoing scandalous results from a recent Nigeria Nationwide League (NNWL) Division 4 competition. The three lecturers are: Akinfenwa Oluseye and Onyeka Ubaka of the Mathematics Department, University of Lagos and Ismail Raji(also a Mathematician) of the University of Ibadan’s Department of Educational Management. According to them, while it is mathematically impossible, it is statistically possible to score as many as 78 goals within 45 minutes in a match, Akinfenwa Oluseye, a specialist in Mathematics, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos: “it is mathematically impossible to score as many as 78 goals in 45 minutes during a football match. “Mathematically speaking, it is impossible to score 78 goals under 45 minutes because 45 minutes multiplied by 60 seconds equals 2,700 seconds, and the 2,700 should be divided by the 78 goals scored. “That means that in the second half, a goal was scored every 34 seconds for them arrive at that score line. DO OR DIE AFFAIR: A typical scene from the Nigerian league. “Considering the speed of the players, the field of play and the short jubilation by players, one can round it up to 39 seconds per goal and if you do the mathematics again, you will find that it’s not possible. “That means you will have 39 seconds to score every other goal, which isn’t remotely possible, because you can’t be that fast. Oluseye also notes: “assuming it’s the fastest man on earth picking the balls and returning it to the centre, it still doesn’t sum up”. He added that even if the opponents were mere statues, the goals would not total 146 goals in all. “It is a match between two opponents and even if one wasn’t present at the pitch, one cannot even score up to that number of goals because the ball has to be passed between the players”. Ubaka, a specialist in statistics, on other hand, said: “from a statistical point of view, it is possible to score 79 goals and above in a match. “Football is a game of chance, the probability of scoring as many as 100 goals is not impossible; chances are that the players are not good or they are not standard players. “Maybe, within the first half, the coach studied their opponents’ weaknesses and capitalised on the slightest mistake to shoot at target. “If the goalkeeper is not good, it is possible to score 10 goals under a minute. Statistics and probability prove that it is possible to score as many goals and even more than 100 goals within that duration,” Ubaka said. Raji, of the University of Ibadan’s Department of Educational Management, said: “It is possible but there may be some conspiracy. There is a tendency for that, but a team can score as many as 80 goals. “They can score a goal every 30 seconds. A ball can travel from one end of a pitch under a minute and if the winning team is not wasting time, it can score as many goals as possible”. Plateau Feeders and the Police Machines FC, in an apparent bid to win the two slots for promotion from Division 4 to Division 3 of the NNWL may have connived to achieve the scandalous goals, in order to put their qualification beyond question. Plateau United Feeders had defeated Akurba FC of Nassarawa, 79-0, while Police Machines defeated Bubayero of Gombe, 67-0. All four clubs have been banned indefinitely by the Nigeria Football Association Soure:http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/fantasy-football-scores-its-impossible-to-score-78-goals-in-45mins-mathematician/ |

Not everyone comes into work with the same level of engagement, motivation, and passion each day. But if more than a few of your employees are making a habit out of being tired, stressed, and unmotivated, you might have a problem on your hands. Here are the top 10 reasons your employee’s full-time job may be hating their job: 10.THEY THINK THE GRASS IS GREENER SOMEPLACE ELSE: If your employee’s friends are having an amazing experience at another company, why wouldn’t they be envious? The transparency of employee benefits and perks at other companies can sometimes lead your employees to dream about working elsewhere. Keep an eye on what other companies are doing and try to match where you can. Sure, your company’s perks aren’t going to be on par with Google, but why not try to give your employees something worth bragging about? They’ll be more motivated, eager to spread the good word, and you’ll benefit from an improved company culture. 9.THEIR VALUES DON'T ALIGN WITH THE COMPANY: Dissatisfaction is bound to take place if your employees aren’t sold on the same things you are. If your company values creativity and collaboration, it’s in your best interest to make screening for these values a mandatory part of your hiring process. Regular feedback and reviews can help you stay in tune with employees’ values and how they align with what the company needs and values most. 8.THEY DON'T FEEL VALUED: If you aren’t taking the time to pat your employees on the back, it’s bound to impact employee happiness. Recognition breeds feelings of value and loyalty. What are you doing to show your employees they’re valued members of the company? This doesn’t mean giving monetary rewards for every accomplishment--instead, regularly utilize verbal praise and offer the occasional gift or reward for awesome performance. 7. JOB SECURITY: It’s easy to dislike your job when you’re worried whether you will still have it a few months or a year from now. If your company is going through hard times, the instability may be taking a toll on your employees. Remain transparent and work on keeping spirits high and your team engaged...or they might end up leaving you out of fear. 6. THERE'S NO ROOM FOR ADVANCEMENT: What’s your company’s policy for promotions? Many employees end up feeling stuck when there’s no chance of advancing within their company. This often leads to job hopping. Your company may be small, but it’s important to create a plan for employees to grow with you. 5.THEY'RE UNHAPPY WITH THEIR PAY: Nothing extinguishes passion quite like the feeling of being paid less than you deserve. Evaluating the salaries of your employees can be unrealistic at certain times, but you should consider asking your employee what they feel they should be making -- their honesty may surprise you. 4.THERE'S TOO MUCH RED TAPE: Rules may be ruining your team. Nothing is more frustrating than being unable to make your own decisions. Boost the autonomy of your employees by giving them room to accomplish goals. This establishes a healthy level of trust, productivity, and benefits the company as a whole. 3.THEY'RE NOT BEING CHALLLENGED: Your employees are on a constant search to advance their skills and improve through their work with you. A lack of meaningful, challenging work is certain to breed disdain. Find out whether your employees feel like they’re learning or advancing their knowledge. If they’re not becoming better, they will go someplace where they feel they can improve. 2. THE PASSION'S GONE: There’s a huge difference between living to work and working to live. Do your employees love what they do? The current job climate has led many people to take on jobs they don’t love. Focus on hiring thoroughly passionate employees and giving them a purpose to maintain their passion throughout their time on the job. 1. THEIR BOSS SUCKS: Poor management can ruin even the most passionate and well-paid employees love for their job. Don’t let your awful management and leadership skills ruin the drive of your workforce. Do you micromanage and criticize? Are you a bad communicator? If you have unhappy employees, the first thing you should look at is your management habits. The next thing to do is actually talk to your employees to get to the bottom of the problem. Brushing off unhappy employees will damage your company. Get to the bottom of their troubles before you lose a valuable employee. What are some other factors for why people hate their jobs? About Ilya Pozin: |
