By UDUMA KALU, WITH AGENCY REPORT A Nigerian professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Francisca Okeke has won the 2013 laureate award for her contributions “to the understanding of daily variations of the ion currents in the upper atmosphere which may further our understanding of climate change.” A second Nigerian award recipient, Dr Eucharia Nwaichi, an environmental bio-chemist from the University of Port Harcourt, joined 15 other young scientists in the “International Fellows” category. Okeke, who is the first female Head of Department, Education Management, UNN, bagged the prize of $100,000 as one of the winners of the 2013 L’Oréal-UNESCO awards in Physical Sciences. In a statement, UNESCO said Okeke has made the study of the ionosphere her lifetime work. The ionosphere lies between 50km and 1000km above the earth surface. “A very thick layer of charged particles, the ionosphere produces changes in the magnetic field on earth’s surface that affect the planet in a host of ways. Her research could lead to a better understanding of climate change and help pinpoint sources of dramatic phenomena like tsunamis and earthquakes”, a summary of her research published by UNESCO read. The awards were announced last year October, but the award ceremony took place last weekend in Paris. She was the only recipient in that category from Africa and the Arab nations and the third Nigerian Laureate since the UNESCO-L’Oreal partnership was established in 1998. Professor Okeke got a prize of $100,000. Four others also got awards in the Laureate category with each representing Europe, Latin America, North America and the Asia Pacific regions. UK Scientist Professor Pratibha Gai of York University won the 2013 European Laureate award. She was recognized for “ingeniously modifying her electron microscope so that she was able to observe chemical reactions occurring at surface atoms of catalysts which will help scientists in their development of new medicines or new energy sources. |
Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, has finally replaced Mr. Obafaiye Shem, the man who postulated the “my oga at the top” mantra, as commandant of Lagos State Command. He was replaced by Mr. Adesuyi Clement from Oyo State Command. The Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr. Olu Abolurin, who was in Lagos weekend over the alleged killing of two of his officers by some policemen, introduced the new Commandant to journalists. Mr Shem However, he did not give reasons for Obafaye’s removal but sources hinted that Adesuyi took over from the former Commandant Obafaye on Tuesday March 29. The source believed that it may not be unconnected with his recent interview on Channels Television live programme. Before now, authorities of NSCDC has denied taken any disciplinary action against Mr. Shem over the said interview. Their reaction followed claims that Shem had been sacked on the orders of the Minister of Interior, who supervises the NSCDC. Shem ordeal started when he appeared on Channels Television morning programme ‘Sunrise’ and when asked the NSCDC website he said: “Hmmm, the website is, excuse me, my Oga at the top knows the website”. He again, cleared his throat and said: “My Oga at the top is working on the website and I don’t have them”. When the presenters insisted that he give a functioning website address of the para-military outfit, he dropped the bombshell: “ww.nscdc, that’s all”. Immediately, the interview went viral and has become so popular to the extent that t-shirts with “my oga at the top” insignia has been produced and selling like hot cake across the country, even as some DJ’s and musicians have done what they called remix of the interview. |
Good News:OBA OF LAGOS SETTLES D’BANJ AND DON JAZZY’S RIFT AT LAST! News is just reaching us that the once-upon-a-time relationship between the two giant entertainers, D’banj and Don Jazzy has just been renewed as they both settled their long time rift today. News reaching us indicates that the Oba Of Lagos, HRH Rilwan Akiolu, was so concerned about the business relationship between the two, called them up to his palace and settled their differences. Don Jazzy in his word told the king that D’banj started it all but the Oba who said he wasn’t going to apportion any blame to any of them, asked the two to touch the royal staff and promised to be friends again. As you are reading this, the two are already together again working on how to revive their Mo’hits entertainment outfit. Remember, theIr age-long rift was finally settled today, April 1st 2013 at the Oba Palace in Lagos. Pakurumo Noni at 06:55 |
By Bimpe Ade It’s the all too familiar pain nine out of 10 women suffer during their “time of the month.” Aching pain in the abdomen, feeling of pressure in the abdomen, pain in the lower back, hips and inner thighs, nausea, and those frequent trips to the toilet are some of the torment women face monthly. People have described how the pain feels in various ways, for me, I feel like someone is stabbing my womb repeatedly, and all my organs are about to fall out. Menstrual pain is caused by contractions in the uterus. Also adding to the discomfort is the lack of oxygen in the womb. What happens is— the blood vessels in the uterus are compressed by the contractions, which cuts off blood supply to the womb. So basically the body reads this lack of oxygen delivery as pain. Dysmenorrheal is the medical term for pain with menstruation, and it generally falls into two camps. Primary dysmenorrheal is the common menstrual pains that are recurrent and not due to other diseases. The pain usually starts a day or two before bleeding starts, and can last from anywhere between 12 to 72 hours. Primary dysmenorrheal usually subsides with age, and childbirth. Nine out of 10 women suffer period pains that is sometimes crippling—but many say their problem is dismissed. Former beauty queen Nike Osinowo made headlines during the week while discussing her battle of 30 years with severe period pains. In an interview with Vanguard she revealed that she lived with the pain for many years before being diagnosed with Endometriosis. Oshinowo explained “Living with endometriosis is a challenge. When you see your doctor, your doctor just tries to treat the symptoms and assumes the pain revolves around your menstrual cycle. But this is not so. This pain affects every single aspect of your life.” This revelation left some women startled going ENDO-WHAT?! Often times, women suffer from the excruciating pain of endometriosis but are not even aware of the condition due to gross misinformation so they simply dismiss it as severe menstrual pain. Ms. Oshinowo’s brave interview about her struggles with the disease spurred me to do some research and I found that Endometriosis is a form of Secondary dysmenorrheal, which is severe menstrual pain caused by a disorder in a woman’s reproductive organs. Endometriosis: is a condition where cells that normally line the uterus are found at other sites of the body—usually the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Some other forms of secondary dysmenorrheal include: Adenomyosis: a condition where the lining of the uterus grows into the muscle of the uterus, and the usual suspect; Uterine fibroids: growths on the inner wall of the uterus. Severe period pain could also be a symptom of an infection such as PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease), an infection caused by bacteria that starts in the uterus and can spread to other reproductive organs. The only way to know if your menstrual cramps are normal is by contacting your health care provider early. All women experience some form of pain or discomfort during their period, but severe pain could be warning signs of potential infertility issues. It’s widely unpopular, and it could be frowned upon to request a doctor’s appointment over menstrual cramps, but a simple pelvic exam is all you need and you will be on your way. Generally both primary and secondary menstrual cramps can be treated so it’s important to get checked early. There’s no surefire way to relieve period pains as I have found over the years that what works for some women absolutely aggravates other women’s pains. Recently a friend of mine suggested that I drink some cranberry juice, but that would have kept me in bed an extra day. So whether you are experiencing mild or severe pain only your doctor can help manage the pain effectively. |

UGHELLI — There was apprehension, yesterday, in Oleh, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, following the killing of a retired soldier and his wife by their 32-year-old lunatic daughter. Sources said the retired Army Warrant Officer, Mr Jonah Elili, and his wife gave up the ghost after they were hit with a pestle by the daughter whose name was given as Elo. The lifeless bodies of the retired soldier, 75 and his wife, 65, were reportedly discovered in the early hours of yesterday by a neighbour who had gone to purchase some items from the deceased couple’s shop. A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the neighbour had, after knocking at their door for several minutes without response, peeped into the house and was shocked to find the husband and wife lying in a pool of blood. The source said the woman raised alarm which drew the attention of people in the neighbourhood, adding that the last they knew or heard about the family was when the retired Warrant Officer came out to drag his daughter who ran outside naked, back into the house and locked her up. According to the eye witness, the couple was blessed with seven children (two boys and five girls), including the one that was afflicted with insanity who had been roaming about the community. Meanwhile, the said Elo had been detained at the Oleh Police Station. She was alleged to have told detectives that she reportedly killed her parents because they hated her. “My parents hate me. They locked me up in a room where they first hit me before I retaliated with a pestle. I saw blood and that is all I know,” Elo reportedly said. A senior Police officer in Oleh confirmed the story, saying a signal had been sent to the appropriate authority just as the matter was being transferred to the state police headquarters in Asaba for further investigations. |
