Uber has been plagued with scandals that led to CEO Travis Kalanick’s forced resignation. Here’s what you can learn from the fallout – and how to spot toxicity in your own workplace. Uber has trailblazed the ride-sharing industry, spread to 662 cities worldwide and has made a billionaire out of founder Travis Kalanick. But all that Silicon Valley-style disruption – which has turned public transport on its head around the globe – hasn’t safeguarded the company from immense turmoil. Because today, at the pressure of investors, Kalanick resigned as CEO. His dramatic departure follows months of scandals about sexual harassment, macho culture and the departure of senior executives, and is a snapshot of one of the most stunning CEO roller-coaster stories in modern business history. Unfortunately for the $70bn California company, its name has now become synonymous with many of the hallmarks of toxic work culture: HR fiascos, ignoring employee benefits, and an arrogant ‘bro’ culture that perpetuates sexism and reckless decision-making in the tech industry. But these scandals are far from limited to Uber. The red flags of toxic work culture are all too common across all industries. Here are some of the classic signs you should look out for – and what you should do if your company resembles a certain former start-up with a German-sounding name. A boss who yells, bullies, or antagonises. This is different to ‘tough love’ or the rough personality of a ‘no-nonsense’ manager. A bully boss – one who manipulates and humiliates their staff – undermines stability and trust throughout the workplace. Before going over your boss’s head, though, consult with your colleagues to see if they feel the same way – if the team is unified, there may be ways to solve the problem as a group. A ‘success at all costs’ philosophy. If the boss’s management style is no-holds-barred – as Kalanick’s was – be wary. While a slash-and-burn method may lead to meteoric results – as it did with Uber – it can lead to rapid, Icarus-like fall, too. Better to get out quick before the plunge. Unfair treatment of workers. Nothing cultivates a toxic work environment more than withholding basic employee rights. Uber faced multiple legal blowbacks following claims that it failed to give its drivers minimum wage or paid holiday. Your boss is a control freak. Or worse, he or she pushes out other top executives at your company, as was the case with Dov Charney, former CEO of American Apparel. “Entrepreneurs who never give up any control, or fail to bring in professional managers, tend to blow up at some point,” Sydney Finkelstein wrote. “Hubris never wins.”

*How suspect lured 12 victims to bed, blackmailed them with nude photos —Police By Evelyn Usman Two years ago, the media was awash with stories on the gruesome murder of 25-year-old Cynthia Osokogu, daughter of a retired general, inside a hotel room in Amuwo Odofin local government area of Lagos State by friends she met on the facebook social network. Today, some individuals still engage in using the social media to commit criminal activities. The latest is the arrest of a 32-year-old graduate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Iweka Chigoziem Nnamdi, by policemen at Ajah Division, Lagos. Penultimate week, in Saturday Vanguard, we published how the suspect, who allegedly posed as prominent Nigerians on the face book, used the medium to woo his unsuspecting victims, mostly women, through the offers of job and business opportunities. When people applied, he would select only the females, married and single, and invite them to a hotel where the purported interview was scheduled. However he would identify himself as the agent or personal assistant to the prominent Nigerian that has the job and demand for sex , with a promise to facilitate the application. But unknown to the victims, a hidden camera is activated once the ceiling fan is switched on, records all the handling and sexual activities, at the end of which the suspect would blackmail them, with a threat to post their nude pictures and videos on the internet if his demand for money was not met. He allegedly succeeded in blackmailing about 12 married women. The last straw was said to be an encounter with a 27-year-old female banker identified simply as Judith. A close friend of the banker, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, narrated the story: “ Judith is presently a shadow of her former self because of Nnamdi’s mischief. This is because she got information about her sex video on the internet from close friends. She met the suspect who posed as Mike Adenuga on the internet and was convinced because of Adenuga’s photograph. They got chatting; at a point, she accepted an invitation to meet him in an hotel two months ago. But when she got there, she met Nnamdi who identified himself as Adenuga’s P.A and told Judith that she would have to go through him to see his boss. One thing led to the other and she found herself in bed with him. But she got the shock of her life when Nnamdi called her on phone to pay some money into his account, threatening to post her sex video on the internet if she didn’t cooperate. Judith called his bluff but was shocked when Nnamdi made good his threat by first posting photographs on the internet . Judith was yet to recover from the shock when Nnamdi went ahead to download the video of them making love on her facebook timeline. About 325 of Judith’s facebook friends watched the video. “The video cost her, her five years relationship. After that, Nnamdi kept calling and threatening to post the second sex video on the internet if Judith did not pay him. It was at this point that she reported the case to policemen at Ajah who asked her to play along , in the process of which he was arrested”. Laptops containing videos and pictures of different women were said to have been recovered by policemen during a search of the suspect’s apartment in Ikota Villa Estate, Ajah. Police sources said about 12 victims contacted on phone revealed that they were married women, with some of them lamenting that the scandal destroyed their marriages. One of them(names withheld), who spoke with operatives on phone when asked to come and testify, was quoted to have said: “ I do not care if he has been arrested, killed or alive because the harm has already been done. Can you imagine that scoundrel sent a video of me and him on bed to my husband? Today, I have been sent out of my matrimonial home. Of what use is my coming to testify? Will that restore my marriage?” Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the suspect’s arrest, narrated: “The case was reported to the police on April, 20, 2014. The complainant alleged that the suspect chatted with her on the facebook for months until he invited her to hotel in Ajah, under the pretence that he was Mike Adenuga, the Chairman of Globacom. When Nnamdi finally met with the victim on March, 14, 2014, he chatted with her and finally convinced the complainant to have sex with him. Unknown to her, the suspect had bugged the hotel room with camera. So while they were having sex, the entire action was being filmed. “After this affair, the suspect started sending threatening text messages to her, demanding she pay various sums of money to him, otherwise he would send the nude pictures to her friends and colleagues at her office. He also sent a GTB bank account number into which she was to pay. “After his arrest on April, 21, 2014, in an hotel at Ajah and following interrogation, police recovered the suspect’s laptop in which he had quite a number of sex pictures and videos of the complainant and also a host of other victims. He made a confessional statement to the effect that he did all that police recovered in his laptop, his BB and Techno phone. On his laptop, police discovered that he had a list of prominent Nigerians such as Mike Adenuga; Pius Ayim Pius; Nwabara Adolphus; Van Vicker, a Ghanaian actor; and Joy Nnwedu, among others. He had been using these images and names to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians. In fact, he has broken marriages as confirmed by our investigations.” The suspect, according to her, has been charged to court on an eight-count charge, informing that the case comes up tomorrow ( May 26) at Court 6, Tinubu, Lagos State. According to the police spokesperson, the suspect was as “cool as cucumber” after he was arrested, smiling like he had not committed any crime. |

CRISTIANO RONALDO has surprised his agent Jorge Mendes by buying him an entire island as a wedding gift, reports the Mirror. The Real Madrid ace splashed out on the lavish gift ahead of Mendes' wedding which will take place in Portugal. The picturesque island has set Ronaldo back a cool £35.5million - a bargain price apparently, given Greece's current economic troubles. Portuguese publication Move Noticas report that Ronaldo saw the island was on sale and thought it would make the perfect wedding gift. Ronaldo was Jorge Mendes' best man where he performed the duties in front of a congregation of 300 invited guests. Among those guests are understood to be Madrid teammates Fabio Coentrao and Pepe, as well as a raft of football's most influential characters. http://isoccerng.com/news/2015/08/ronaldo-buys-his-agent-an-island-as-wedding-gift

A baby boy has been left blind in one eye after a family friend allegedly took a close-up photograph without turning off the flash. According to Peoples Daily Online, the three-month-old baby, who has not been named suffered irreparable damage from the flash of the camera, which was held about 10 inches away from the baby boy. The parents were said to have noticed that there was something wrong with their baby’s vision soon after the photograph was taken. DailyMailUK added that aside from the right eye that went blind, the baby also had a reduced vision in his left eye.The damage is said to be permanent and cannot be fixed with surgery. Experts say that the strong flash has damaged cells on the macula, which is the part of the eye where incoming light rays are focused. Damage to the macula can lead to the loss of central vision, which allows people to see straight ahead. The macula is not fully developed until children are four, meaning youngsters are very sensitive to strong light. According to research, babies will shut their eyes when exposed to light on reflex, just milliseconds of strong light can cause permanent damage. It is not clear whether the family friend will face any legal action following the incident.

3. America loves a celebrity Mr Trump has been plastering his name on everything he touches - from New York towers to California golf courses to airplane tailfins - for decades. He was the star of his own reality television show, and his catchphrase - "you're fired" - has entered the cultural zeitgeist. In other words, Mr Trump has the kind of name recognition of which politicians like Ohio Governor John Kasich and Wisconsin's Walker can only dream. A recent Gallup poll puts Mr Trump's name ID among Republicans at 92%. CNN's poll found only 1% of Americans had never heard of the man. Mr Trump's visibility, combined with his headline-grabbing entry into the Republican race, has created a kind of positive feedback loop of political success. His name recognition spurs media coverage, which boosts his poll numbers and leads to more media coverage. George Washington University Prof John Sides explains how this process plays out. "When a pollster interrupts people's lives and asks them about a presidential primary that doesn't formally begin for months, a significant number of people will mention whichever candidate happens to be in the news these days," he writes in the Washington Post. Sides and UCLA Prof Lynn Vavreck say this is a familiar cycle in US politics, with an early boom in standing usually followed by a steady decline, as candidates undergo media scrutiny. Is it a fate that awaits Mr Trump? If it isn't, it could be because … 4. The Republican establishment's nemesis Part of the reason Mr Trump's attacks on Mr McCain haven't seemed to damage his standing is because the long-time Arizona senator embodies a Republican Party Washington elite that is haemorrhaging support even among the conservative faithful. A recent Pew survey puts the party's favourability among its own members at 68% - the lowest it's been in more than two years. All of this has led to a fair amount of hand-wringing among conservatives, who look at the Republican congressional leadership's inability to take a more confrontational stands on issues like the Iran nuclear agreement and shuttering the Export-Import Bank and wonder just what their 2014 mid-term election victories got them. "When given the opportunity to put good policy into place, or to take steps to make such policy more feasible in the future, where is the Republican Party to be found?" asks the Federalist's Ben Domenech. Cue Donald Trump, who enters the presidential race like a battleship, with fusillades in all directions. He says what he thinks and seems constitutionally unable to apologise. According to the CNN poll, 25% of the respondents who said it's "extremely important" that a candidate stand up for his or her beliefs in the face of criticism support Mr Trump. Mr Bush is a distant second at 11%. . The latest "silent majority" spokesman Here's another bit of insight from that CNN poll. Just 16% of Republicans feel like they're represented in Washington - those that don't support Mr Trump by a sizeable margin (24%, compared to 13% for Jeb Bush and single digits for the rest of the Republican field). Mr Trump is appealing to what Victor David Hanson of PJ Media calls the fed-up crowd. "The fed-up crowd likes the payback of watching blood sport in an arena where niceties just don't apply anymore," he writes. "At least for a while longer, they enjoy the smug getting their comeuppance, as an uncouth, bull-headed Trump charges about, snorting and spearing liberal pieties and more sober and judicious Republicans at random." The Free Beacon's Continetti paints a similar picture, calling Mr Trump's supporters the "radical middle", who in years past embraced Ronald Reagan, Pat Buchanan, Newt Gingrich and Ross Perot (another wealthy businessman who made his bones railing against a Mexican threat). "That Trump is not a conservative, nor by any means a mainstream Republican, is not a minus but a plus to the radical middle," he continues. "These voters are culturally right but economically left; they depend on the New Deal and parts of the Great Society, are estranged from the fiscal and monetary agendas of the Economist and Wall Street Journal. What they lack in free market bona fides they make up for in their romantic fantasy of the patriotic tycoon or general, the fixer, the Can Do Man who will cut the baloney and Get Things Done." Mr Trump himself calls his supporters "the silent majority" - a label first coined by President Richard Nixon in 1969. "There's a silent majority out there," Mr Trump said in South Carolina last week. "We're tired of being pushed around, kicked around, and acting and being led by stupid people." http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-33660969

If Donald Trump's presidential bid is dead, no one bothered to tell Mr Trump - or his supporters. Just a week ago, following the New York billionaire's mocking comments about 2008 Republican nominee John McCain's Vietnam POW experience, pundits and prognosticators were busy etching his political epitaph. "The circus is almost over," Republican strategist Rick Wilson said in Politico. "My advice to Trump fans? Don't be the last clown out of the tent." The previous Republican nominee Mitt Romney blasted Mr Trump, as did current candidates Jeb Bush, Scott Walker and Lindsey Graham. All that was left was to wait for the latest poll results to come in and see exactly how precipitous Mr Trump's fall would be. Naysayers are going to have to wait a bit longer, it seems. A CNN/ORD national survey conducted entirely after the McCain dust-up, for instance, puts Mr Trump ahead with the support of 18% of Republicans, Mr Bush at 15% and Mr Walker at 10%. So, how to explain Mr Trump's enduring appeal? Here are five possible factors at play. 1. The voice of the anti-immigration cause Immigration has become a centrepiece of Mr Trump's campaign thanks to the over-the-top rhetoric in his kick-off speech in New York, where he accused Mexico of "bringing drugs, and bringing crime, and their rapists" to the US. While his views were condemned as extreme and racially tinged, his immigration stance appears to be resonating with a significant portion of the Republican primary electorate. According to that CNN/ORC survey, 63% of Republicans support deporting the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the US. Of that number, 23% back Mr Trump, while only 10% support second-place Bush. "It is immigration - its universally celebrated benefits and its barely acknowledged costs - that is the third rail of US politics," writes Matthew Continetti for the Washington Free Beacon. "Trump didn't step on the third rail; he embraced it, he won't let go of it, and in so doing he's become electric." The irony, however, is that before and after his bombastic comments, Mr Trump has offered more moderate views on the issue, including endorsing the possibility of a "merit-based system" that would allow a pathway for some undocumented immigrants to remain in the US. That sounds a lot like Mr Bush's views, in fact. But Mr Trump made a big splash with his anti-immigration comments - and for conservatives who care about the issue, he's become their guy. 2. A man with business bona fides Although immigration has dominated Mr Trump's media coverage, the CNN poll reveals that it's not nearly the most important subject for Republican voters. Neither is foreign policy, which has been a staple of Republican candidate stump speeches all year. According to the CNN poll the issue that a 44% plurality of Republicans care about is the economy. Although unemployment is dropping and the stock market continues to rise, many Americans still worry about their financial bottom line - particularly when it comes to wage stagnation and the growing gap between the middle class and the super-wealthy. That's showing up in the rhetoric not only of Democrats, but also of many Republican candidates. Unlike other candidates, however, Mr Trump can boast of his business experience and use it as a cudgel against his adversaries "A number of my competitors for the Republican nomination have no business running for president," Mr Trump wrote in a 19 July USA Today op-ed. "I do not need to be lectured by any of them. Many are failed politicians or people who would be unable to succeed in the private sector." Mr Trump says he'll be the "best jobs president that God ever created". According to Madison Gesiotto of the Washington Times, that message is resonating - particularly with younger voters who are struggling to make headway in the modern workplace. "If those younger voters believe he will deliver those jobs, God help the rest of the GOP field," he concludes. God help them indeed.
