Sports / Messi Leaves Argentina Team After 3-1 Defeat To Venezuela by bennieman: 5:45am On Mar 24, 2019
Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has left the team’s camp, following a 3-1 loss to Venezuela in an international friendly played in Madrid.
Messi returned to international duty for the first time since the 2018 World Cup on Friday, but it was a disappointing night for the forward.
Venezuela put three past their more illustrious rivals, with goals from Salomon Rondon, Jhon Murillo and Josef Martinez.

Lautaro Martinez scored Argentina’s consolation.
The team announced after the loss that Messi will miss Tuesday’s match against Morocco as a precaution following a groin injury.
“The second half left us with positive things and the first half with negative ones. Better that they happened that way.
“We learned a lot from this loss. The situations we created were largely in due part to Messi. This match helped us to see how [the others] played alongside Messi,” Argentina manager, Luis Scaloni, told reporters after the game.

Business / Re: MMM Nigeria: Ponzi Scheme, Robbing Peter To Pay Paul? TheGuardian by bennieman: 1:17pm On Oct 24, 2016
One thing I have been pondering on is what the promoters stand to gain. They can't just be linking people to make donations to each other out of altruism. I really suspect some foul play.

One sure thing is that they will pay in order to attract new investors and also retain the ones that they already have. Another sure thing is that it will crash, either soon or in the near future.

I suspect that they may have their croonies to whom they can allocate huge percentages of the 'help' you are advised to distribute as a way of getting cash out of the system since people are not asked to pay into MMM account but other individual's account.

Some people say MMM generates money based on people's visits and 'clicks' on their site, which Google supposedly pays. Correct me if I am wrong, Google pays for the clicks on adverts which they display on your platform and I haven't seen a single advert by google on MMM site.

Some people may try to play smart and cash out as soon as possible but you can never be sure of how soon is soon enough.

Business / Re: Gtbank Is A Fraud!!! Charging My Account Unnecessarily by bennieman: 6:29am On Jun 23, 2016
I also received the same debit for airtime purchase amounting to 4,500. However, I noticed that sometime in April, I made airtime purchases amounting to a total of 4,500, I got value for the airtime and my account was not debited. I only noticed a reduction in my available balance while my current balance remained the same. This means that the value for the transaction was blocked from my current balance.

On Tuesday, I was debited for a total of 4,500 and I did not bother since I was already aware of the transaction but what got me worried was that my available balance reduced which was not supposed to be since the 4,500 had been blocked and I expected them to take the money from there. However, when I checked my balance yesterday, I noticed that the blocked money had been released and my balance returned to its normal status.

So, based on my experience, I think that what simply happened was a delayed debit for transactions you had performed earlier and the blocked money was not released immediately. All of you that had issues should try and check your balances on the next day and I am sure that your balance must have been restored to its normal state.

I strongly doubt that this is a case of fraud because we also received mails to the effect that our accounts will be debited for successful airtime purchases that we had not been charged for.
Business / Re: Why We Should Reject The N10,000 Withdrawal Limit by bennieman: 7:19pm On Jun 13, 2016
It does not make any sense to limit OTC cash withdrawals to N10,000. A lot of people are still outside the banking system and you cannot pay them via e-payment channels.

Imagine a case whereby you go to villages to buy products in order to sell in other locations. It will be impossible to pay most of such sellers because a very large number of them do not have bank accounts.

I also think the shortcomings of our e payment channels should first be perfected before we think of implementing such policies.

Foreign Affairs / Angola President Appoints Daughter Boss Of Oil Firm by bennieman: 7:07pm On Jun 13, 2016
Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has named his billionaire daughter Isabel to head the state oil firm Sonangol, according to a government statement published late Thursday.
He appointed the 43-year-old Isabel dos Santos chairwoman of a new board of directors of Sonangol, after sacking the previous board last month.

Isabel dos Santos has been ranked by Forbes magazine as the richest woman on the continent.

Critics say she amassed her vast fortunes thanks to the backing of her father who has ruled Angola for 35 years.

In a statement Friday Isabel dos Santos vowed that the new Sonangol board “will work to decrease production costs and optimise resources in order to increase the international competitiveness of the Angolan oil sector”.

The eldest daughter of the Angolan leader, she is nicknamed the “Princess” and is ranked Africa’s eighth wealthiest by Forbes magazine after building a vast business empire.

She grew up in London, where she studied mechanical and electrical engineering at King’s College. Her first business venture was a restaurant, Miami Beach, which she opened as a 24-year-old in Luanda.

Her wealth is estimated at $3.3 billion.

The mother of three holds a quarter of the shares in Angola’s mobile phone company Unitel and a significant stake of Angola’s Banco BIC.

She also controls 19 percent of Portugal’s fourth-biggest bank BPI and has bought shares in several Portuguese companies in recent years, including a cable television firm.

Isabel dos Santos has recently spread her banking empire into neighbouring Namibia, after a banking licence was approved by the country’s central bank.

Angola is sub-Saharan Africa’s second largest oil producer after Nigeria.

But a global decline in the price of oil has deprived Angola of vital resources, prompting the regime of longtime ruler President Jose Eduardo dos Santos in April to ask for financial help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

deltateam:

You are dumb. So people don't buy cars, build houses etc again. I see you must be a teenager.

Your comment shows your level of maturity and lack of information. Who says you need cash to do all that you mentioned? What you really need is money( value) and not necessarily cash.

For instance, I paid N2mm for the last car I bought and the seller was a hausa dealer. Did I withdraw cash? No. Rather, he gave me his account number and I did a transfer into his account there and then.

There are many risks and disadvantages associated with handling excess cash from both the view of the banks and customers alike viz theft, cost of processing cash, cost of moving cash etc.

This will only force people to open and operate multiple bank account, welcome development sha

With the BVN policy in place, I don't think one will be able to operate multiple accounts because most banks restrict the number of accounts you can open with your name to one. So you may have a current and savings account and other types of accounts all under your name. This charge will be applied to you irrespective of the number of accounts you operate under one name.

The only way out in my opinion, which will be stressful, is to open accounts with many banks and spread your money to all of them before proceeding to withdraw or you transfer the cash to other people's accounts who will then withdraw on your behalf.

Less stress is to align with the use of bank transfers and e channels.

I received the mail below this evening from my bankers

NATIONWIDE IMPLEMENTATION OF CASHLESS POLICY CHARGES ON CASH WITHDRAWALS

We refer to the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) cashless policy, and the previous communication deferring charges on cash withdrawals above the daily limits, in 30 states of Nigeria till July 1, 2015.

Please be informed that the following modalities which are currently operational in Lagos, Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), Abia, Anambra, Kano, Ogun and Rivers States will now be effective nationwide, including the previously exempted 30 states of Nigeria:

For individual account holders, charges will apply when daily cumulative withdrawals and deposits are in excess of N500,000

For corporate account holders, charges will apply when daily cumulative withdrawals are in excess of N3,000,000

The Cashless policy applies to all accounts including COLLECTION accounts i.e. all sub-accounts linked to the same account holder would be treated as one account for both corporate and individual accounts.

Please find the applicable charges below:

Daily Limit

Withdrawal Charges

Individual

N500,000

3% on excess

Corporate

N3,000,000

5% on excess

Kindly note that the above limits apply so far as it involves cash, irrespective of channel i.e. over the counter, ATM, 3rd party cheques cashed over the counter etc. For example, if an individual withdraws N450,000 over the counter, and N150,000 from the ATM on the same day, the total amount withdrawn by the customer is N600,000, and the service charge will apply on N100,000 - the amount above the daily free limit of N500,000

Exemptions have however been granted on lodgments and withdrawals for accounts operated by Embassies, Diplomatic Missions, Multilateral Agencies, Aid Donor Agencies, Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government (revenue collections only), Microfinance Banks (MFBs) and Primary Mortgage Institutions (PMIs).

To ensure a seamless transition to a cashless economy, GTBank has made several safe and convenient alternative channels available for personal and business banking.

Business / Cbn Rolls Out Cashless Policy In All States by bennieman: 6:38pm On Jul 09, 2015
The CBN extended the cashless policy to all states with effect from July 1, 2015.

With this policy in place, there will be limits for free cash withdrawals from both individual and corporate accounts. The daily withdrawal limits for individual accounts and corporate accounts are 500,000 and N3,000,000 respectively.

A charge of 3% and 5% will be applied to the excess withdrawals above the daily limit on individual and corporate accounts respectively.

You may recall that the policy was meant to take effect nationwide on July 1, 2014 but the present CBN governor extended the roll out date of the policy by one year and removed the charge on cash deposits.

With the policy in place, account holders that intend to make high value payments are encouraged to make account transfers rather than cash withdrawals.

Business / Re: GTB Mobile Money Transfer - How Secure Is It? by bennieman: 4:46am On May 26, 2015
boneruns:

Firstly, does it mean as a customer, I'm automatically enabled, without my consent to perform this transaction on my registered line?

Secondly, you should understand that at the first phase of BVN, the target is to ensure customers are enrolled for BVN, and these numbers are not yet mapped to accounts owned by customers. This would come during second phase BVN.

In conclusion, the bank faces risk of provision for funds lost due to fraudsters in this process since I didn't subscribe to it. And, for now, BVN can not show accounts linked to it.

So this process is still porous.

The BVN is already linked to the accounts immediately you register. The approach you mentioned may be possible for a few people who registered in banks other than where they have accounts, but the present deadline for all individual accounts to be linked to a BVN is June, 2015 after which such accounts may be blocked for BVN.

As for the porosity of this process, I agree that the PIN authentication should be adopted despite the 20k limit.

Prior to the secure code initiative for online card transactions, the only information required worldwide to do online transactions with a Mastercard or Visacard were the details that are written on the card, without a PIN, and this still applies to some sites that have not registered for secure code. What this implies is that your card is not something that should be kept carelessly.

I found a way round the security issue. I defaced the last 4 digits on my ATM card. The number is known only to me and serves as my security code. Yes the card still works on ATMs

This guy is so smart. I was about to say this when I saw his post.

As a matter of fact, GTB is extremely security conscious and so many people have been complaining of not being able to make transfers without having an internet banking token.

This service, 737 transfers, is the only way you can make a transfer from your account without a token, save mobile money, and it has a daily limit of 20k. I also think they should have used the PIN authentication option rather than the last four digits on card.

Either way, kudos to them for this invention.
