Sports / Excitement As Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium In Benin Takes Shape....(pics) by Bensondrums(m): 8:21pm On Jul 09, 2019
Excitement as Samuel Ogbemudia stadium takes shape

As construction at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium reaches advanced stage with the laying of the canopy cover, residents in Edo State have lauded the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government for its commitment to sports development.

A cross section of residents in Benin City, who spoke to journalists, said they were impressed with the speed and quality of work at the stadium, which according to them, would transform the state into a sporting destination in no distant time.

Mr. Agho Omo, who resides in Stadium Road, said work is progressing smoothly at the stadium, commending Governor Obaseki for prioritising the reconstruction of the stadium to revive sports in the state.

According to him, “I am impressed with the work done. The state government under Governor Obaseki has shown what is possible when funds are maximised for development. This is the right step in the right direction. The governor and his team have shown that they are indeed committed to sports development and are expert managers of resources.

“As someone who lives on this axis of town, I know what this stadium looked like before. But with the work done now, we can host international games at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium. It is heart-warming.”

A footballer, Mr. Innocent Omozuwa, said the state government has impressed the sporting community in the state with the stadium revamp project, noting that the natural grass at the stadium would make the stadium a footballer’s delight, amid other attractions.

“When completed, I bet that everyone in Benin will want to watch matches here. The stadium now has a beautiful canopy cover. The chairs are being well laid. We are so excited with what the governor has done,” he added.

Work at the stadium started last year, with the plan being a revamp of the stadium, the tennis court and the swimming pool sections. The state is billed to host the National Sports Festivals next year, with preparations in top gear to ensure that Edo puts up a good showing of its sporting potential.

Sports / Bendel Insurance Of Benin Gains Promotion After 11years by Bensondrums(m): 6:47am On Nov 06, 2018
By; RALPH OKHIRIA, Benin City

After dropping from the Nigerian elite soccer league, for over a decade, Bendel Insurance Football Club, Benin City on Monday, made a historic return to the Premier League with a 2-1 defeat of 3SC Football Club, Ibadan.

The highly anticipated make-or-mar encounter, between both teams, was concluded on Monday morning at the University of Benin Sports Complex, Benin City, Edo State, after a tension-soaked Sunday afternoon encounter that was postponed due to bad weather.

With the 2-1 win, the Edo Arsenal as Bendel Insurance are fondly called, has secured the 3 points it needed to top the NNL Table and book a place in the 2018/19 NPFL season.

Receiving the team at the Government House on Monday, a visibly-elated Governor Obaseki congratulated the management and players of Bendel Insurance Football Club for defeating 3SC FC of Ibadan to proceed to the Nigeria Premier League.

Obaseki said the victory was another fulfilment of his administration’s promise to Edo people and residents.

“My joy knows no bound because of what you have done today. I congratulate you and congratulate myself. I say this because it is another promise kept. We promised Edo people that we would bring Bendel Insurance to its lofty status which we all will be proud off and make sure they go on to play in the Premier league,” the governor said.

He described the Deputy Governor of the State, Hon. Philip Shaibu who led the team to his office as the father of the New Bendel Insurance FC and commended him for the giant strides he made in rebranding the club.

“We have built a team and have a machinery that will win the premier league, I am giving the club the sum of N25 million to show how grateful we are as a government,” Obaseki said.

Nairaland / General / Why Are You Still in Nigeria? by Bensondrums(m): 7:43am On Dec 11, 2017
Good day all, I decided to throw up this question to know some of the main reasons why we still chose to remain in Nigeria despite the many many ups and downs.

For some, it might be due to low finance to enable them travel out, while for some too like me, its because we still believe that we can build the country with our legit individual effort nd also make it here in the country.

So you nairalanders, why are you still living in Nigeria?

You died bcus of the doctor's earlier refusal to treat you bcus of N1500. Even when you still had breadth in you. All you needed wz just oxygen. You were supposed to pass out for serving your country few days from now BT now you are no more. Abraham, my able class rep, my No1 striker, class of 2015 finest why did u leave us so soon? I knw God knows better. Adieu my friend, ADIEU

This is the story of his death as told by his friend...

Am seriously dying and have been crying since for the 3hours Now, a friend of mine, that me and him where together 3hours ago where we went to go charge our phones, we left the phone spot together, and I was supposed to go join him and play a football match but I went home to go eat, after eating I was leaving my house to go back to where I was charging my phone, and was told that 5mins when the young man started playing football, he collapsed and they all rushed him to the hospital and when they got their, the doctor refused to treat him and said they must first pay 1,500 for hospital card b4 treating him, so they did that and after that the doctor went and hide after 45mins he came out and said the young man is dead despite when the man was taking to the hospital he was alive, and only what he needed was oxygen only, so we rushed him to the university of UYO teaching hospital and they confirmed him dead, a friend I was just barely 3hours ago, and his also a copper like me and he was supposed to pass out in less than one week's time and which he got his discharge form for passing out today and now this my friend is no more, am seriously in pains and crying since
I don't knw the mod in charge of dis section BT its disheartening that Nigerian doctors could b dis wicked and heartless. All bcus of N1500.

Pictures of him blow.
