A former Presidential spokesman, Reno Omokri on Saturday said it was very unwise for the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara to have shaded the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike publicly. Omokri, in a tweet said “I am not sure Fubara was wise to shade Wike publicly. No matter what has happened between them, he still got to where he is because God used Wike to lift him.” According to Omokri, “It is spiritually and morally wrong for anyone to hurl invective, whether apparently or subliminally at your benefactor. Wike may be overbearing, but at least his bullish personality got you where you are. It shows crass, not class.” He said this would hardly happen among the Yoruba, saying “And look at where they are today. Godfatherism is bad. But when you go into a royal marriage, you don’t expect a usual marriage. “Ogun and Lagos states have a larger budget than many African countries. Yet, their Governors were and are still loyal to their godfather. “Harry S Truman was made US President by his godfather, Robert E. Hannegan. It happens. If we are to be honest, how is godfatherism different from mentorship? You can manage such relationships and not let it damage your Government.” |

The Abia State Government, under the leadership of Alex Otti of the Labour Party, looks to borrow to fund 71 per cent of the 2024 budget. In an analysis of the budget, the state said it plans to get N166,077,717,058 in revenue, including earnings from internally generated channels, the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, and other sources. This represents 29 per cent of the total budget expenditure. According to Statisense, the figure showed that 71 per cent of the budget is expected to be funded through borrowing. In June, the Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Finance, Mike Akpara, said the state owes N191,239,307,593.67 billion in domestic and foreign loans. The implication is that if the Abia State Assembly passes the budget, the state’s debt portfolio will rise to a record high. |

The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, Emanuel Iwuanyanwu, has advised Igbos whose houses were demolished in the Abule Ado area of Lagos not to cry over the development. He asserted that the Federal Government has the right to demolish buildings for the public interest. He, however, insisted that those affected should be compensated. The Ohanaeze chieftain urged those whose buildings were demolished not to cry over spilt milk, adding that moves are being made to mitigate aggrieved Igbos nationwide. Iwuanyanwu stated this during his visit to grieve with the Igbos in the community. He said, “The government has the right to demolish for public interest, but the affected citizens should be compensated. There’s no need to cry over split milk. “in any country, citizens’ rights are sacred, Senator Umeh has briefed me, but I came here to know the main issue. What we are going to fight for are our rights. You only build a country based on the truth.” Recounting his ordeal, one of the affected property owners, who preferred to remain anonymous, said, “I am unable to recover from the needles ordeal. I moved into my dream apartment, and on the third day, they came with bulldozers to bring my dream apartment down. “There’s an urgent need for the power to address these issues.” Responding to their grief, Chief Iwuanyanwu disclosed that Igbos in the diaspora are seriously concerned about how Igbos at home are being treated. “We have decided to set up an Igbo relief agency where every aggrieved Igbo would be funded. “I will also advise communities to treat Igbos fairly because we are peace loving and we are the highest indigenous people that are adding to the GDP of the nation,” he said. |

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has finally addressed rumours attributed to his recent collapse at his birthday event. Speaking to reporters at the Senate on Friday, Akpabio attributed the alleged collapse to a combination of malaria and exhaustion. He confirmed he had been diagnosed with malaria after the December 7th colloquium held in Abuja. He also downplayed the incident, describing it as a “show of humanity” and attributing it to fatigue compounded by the stress of the event. He said, “What eventually happened after the event was a show of humanity. I went home and I called my doctors and I was assured that I have malaria, mingled with stress, which could also be described in another way as exhaustion. “In fact, anybody could be exhausted. Please, drink water daily so that you don’t get exhausted. “This is to say that the work goes on. I want to assure Nigerians that the National Assembly is intact and we are still going on with our duty, our appropriation. “We will resume on 20th December. But before then, the various committees must have finished their work to enable us to meet the target to pass the budget before the end of the year for the president to append his signature.” Akpabio assured Nigerians that the Senate remains operational and on schedule to pass the national budget before the end of the year. He confirmed the resumption of legislative activities on December 20th and also said committees need to finalise their work before the deadline. |
