Onitsha – The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, has commended the people of Anambra for coming out to vote in Saturday’s supplementary governorship election, stating that there was no boycott of the election from any political party. The electoral commissioner, who supervised the election in Onitsha South and Onitsha North council areas, spoke at Okija Hall, where voting took place in four polling units. “The important thing here is that for so many places where I have visited, the party agents are there, especially those of the major parties. “It is a clear indication that there had not been any boycott of the election by any of the parties. “The people are interested in completing this exercise so that at the end of the day, their governor can be announced to them,’’ he said. Ikoiwak said that INEC directed its poll officers to display the Form 60E on the day of the exercise, which would show that the election had been completed peacefully. “You cannot display that form if you do not have a conducive environment. “And that form would display the result in each unit for members of the public to copy and know what happened in the unit,’’ he said. On vehicular and people’s movement; the REC said that it was not possible to totally restrict people, especially for the large number of people that had already voted. “You know this a civil thing, and you cannot cage people. “However, restriction was done in those residential areas concerned with the supplementary election,’’ he said. Ikoiwak lauded the security agencies for “doing their best’’ as well as INEC main and ad-hoc staff “for living up to expectation’’. Whoever is not satisfied should go to court. |
ABUJA — Amidst mutual accusations of fraud from the different political parties involved in the inconclusive Anambra State gubernatorial election of last weekend, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC is today set to announce the date for the supplementary gubernatorial election. Yesterday, INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega and other senior officers of the commission debriefed officials that were sent to conduct the election. Following the debriefing the commission is expected to take a decision on the date for the supplementary election. Ngige,Obiano,Ubah and Nwoye Ngige,Obiano,Ubah and Nwoye Candidates and parties that were involved in the election were, yesterday, at daggers drawn on the legality of another election. The All Progressives Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s candidate, Comrade Tony Nwoye were united yesterday in calling for a full cancellation of the election done so far. The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, whose candidate Willi Obiano is ahead in the declared results, has meanwhile insisted that the election so far conducted should not be cancelled. APGA National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh while asserting that the election of last weekend was devoid of irregularities told Vanguard that APGA was not afraid of partaking in a fresh election. Meanwhile, the former governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Kalu has blamed the confusion emanating from the election in Anambra State to lack of preparation by the election management body. The commission yesterday, held a crucial meeting during which it evaluated its performance in the botched polls, an INEC bulletin released yesterday disclosed. Should the date of the supplementary election be announced today, it is expected that the make-up polls would hold in 210 Polling Units where the election was cancelled due to irregularities. The affected local government areas and the number of affected polling units are as follows: Idemili North, 160; Ayamelum, two; Anambra East, three; Anambra West, six; Anaocha, one; Awka North, two and Aguata, one. Others include Awka South, one; Ekwusigo, three; Idemili South, one; Ihiala, South, two; Onitsha North, one; Onitaha South, 17; Orumba North, four and Oyi, four. Also, 113,113 registered voters are to take part in the supplementary election. Meanwhile, the APC yesterday insisted on the total cancellation of the polls as it pushed further its protest against the election with the call for the prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the State, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu. APC in a letter written to INEC chairman, Prof. Jega demanded that INEC discontinue all arrangements for the conduct of the supplementary election in the state as it insisted that no candidate should be declared as winner until a fresh election is held. The party’s leadership also threatened to go to court if INEC failed to heed its advice and proceed to conduct the supplementary election. In the letter made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday, the party said: “Our demand is predicated on serious irregularities and non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended which characterised the conduct of the said election.” The APC leaders cited their reasons for making their demands to include INEC’s alleged presentation of three different voters register to representatives of political parties on October 16, November 13 and November 16. Akande also gave the example of the PDP governorship candidate in the election, Mr. Tony Nwoye whose name was contained in the first two registers but was missing in the last one which was presented on election day, describing the poll as tainted. Other irregularities complained against included lack of result sheets and non-transparent collation of results at collation centres. They also said that they discovered poor distribution of election materials; inadequate recruitment and poor training of INEC’s ad-hoc staff as well as recruitment of electoral officials including staff and students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University on the day of the election. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/anambra-inec-decide-date-supplementary-polls-today/#sthash.LfjxsBa6.dpuf |

More reactions have been trailing the November 16 governorship election in Anambra state which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared inconclusive. While the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Willie Obiano, commends the credibility of the election and the enthusiasm of the people of the state to vote the candidate of their choice, his counterpart in the Peoples Progressive Alliance (PPA) Godwin Ezeemo accepts the result as collated by INEC as well the decision to organize a supplementary election. However, the state chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Ken Emeakayi cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) to desist from causing disaffection among members of the PDP and the state working committee of the party. In an interview with the candidate of APGA, Willie Obiano, he expressed joy over the outcome of the election. The candidate, who spoke to Channels Television in his Aguleri hometown, in Anambra East local government area, further noted that the election was credible. The Peoples Progressive Alliance candidate while accepting the decision of INEC to hold a supplementary election commended INEC for a display of an improved electoral process which gave room for a hitch-free election. He however bemoaned the level of financial inducement that pervaded the election. However, the state chairman of PDP in a press briefing in Awka, maintained the party’s acceptance of the election outcome in line with the National Working Committee of the party as announced by Olisa Metuh and pledged the party’s submission to the supplementary election as would be directed by INEC. Mr. Emeakayi commended all the security agencies in their key role of ensuring maintenance of security and orderliness throughout Anambra state. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/11/20/more-reactions-trail-anambra-inconclusive-elections/ |

ANAMBRA GUBER Please Respect the Choice of Anambra People, Ezemo says The Governorship of PPA, Mr Godwin Ezeemo says he is satisfied with the conduct and outcome of the Governorship election areas already concluded. Speaking to journalists at his country home, Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area, Mr. Ezeemo said he was also in full support of supplementary election in areas declared inconclusive. He called on those threatening thunder and brimstone because they lost election to respect the will of the people, even, when, according to him, some were influenced with money. Mr Ezeemo said the conduct of the election was remarkable improvement on previous elections and noted that INEC demonstrated genuine commitment to deliver free and fair election. He noted that people of the State have made their choice and enjoined those calling for cancellation of the entire exercise to respect the mandate of the electorate. The PPA Governorship candidate advised INEC to computerize the election process to eliminate sharp practices and controversies. Condemning those sponsoring any form of protest against the election, Ezeemo said that it was not what Anambra needed at this point in time and called on the people of the State to shun external influence that are interested in destabilizing the State.
