Rawhumper: This one dey look for cruise.....abeg u wan make guys start dey toast u nah
ote author=Betterprospect post=111023103]Good day Nairalander. I'm single, 30 years old. I studied agriculture related course at University level, and I presently worked in that field and I earned about 120k monthly.
I feel unfulfilled and I'm lacking interest day after day. The unfulfillment brewed mostly from my bosses egoistic and narcissistic approach to his employee, the insane working hours, and the lack of liberty, and most importantly, I feel I could do better. Now I have a meagre 2 million naira saved up, small? I know. Buy I'd like to pursue my passion in tech albeit from ground zero.
Now my dilemma is:
1. Seeing that I'm old and already past my prime for a career change at 30 yrs old, does a pursue of another career make sense?
2. Knowing that 2 million is small and would not last long. Does is it make sense to just up and leave?
3. I have a small biz I ideal which I feel could give me close to 50k monthly, but thing is, this is Nigeria and I might be wrong.
4. Should I just suck it up and continue for another year or two? Everyone I asked seems to think I should.
P,S. I worked 12 hours a day and its impossible I merge the two together.
Cruise ko , kuli kuli ni. I'm a man. So no be everybody get ulterior motives like you.
Highorbit7O16: How did you save up 2million from 120K monthly salary? Betterprospect
I didn't saved all 2m from the 120k job. In fact my savings from it is about 500k only. The 50k monthly side hustle helped, and I did alot of other hustle too.
baba4thegehs: At 28 I was clueless, depressed worked at a job I hated so much and was ready to take a pay cut to leave ...
I picked myself up and started learning a skill, spent hours on that new career path got my first paying job after 6 months about 200k
I think My life started at 29. I worked so hard to get really good at the skills then resigned got another job that pays 500k. Then got another that pays over 700k. Living my best life now.
Life has no rule book, you just have to be daring and be ready to take chances at whatever opportunity you have
All the best fam. If you want to get into tech, be ready to work 100x harder to get really good at your choosing career path.
Iamfrank: Sometimes I wonder how some nairalanders think. Someone has a problem with his job n career change and asked for an advice towards it, some person's began to insult him saying he is ungrateful and doesn't value what he has. The truth is that, there is a point in life, a person's deserves more on what he or she is getting. That is while we see footballers signing a new contract with higher pay or musicians leaving their record labels to start theirs. I believe the OP is at that stage of life because of his experience n his level of information has really expanded. I wanted opening d same topic coz am passing through exactly d same tin, but I have only saved 1.1m.
Thanks bro. Its sad really. I guess they just allow their problems and current situations to cloud their judgement.
nnamdiosu: What you feel now is the same thing all great men, inventors, geniuses felt that made them drop whatever they were doing to achieve that greatness.
You sir are a great man.
Other people would have being happy, earning what you have. They would have flexed the savings or gone into vices. But u still feel something is missing...that means you were cut more for this.
That's the first indication.
My submission. Your passion or interest is a key decider into where your destiny, seat of greatness lies. You said tech huh? So start up.
Get a laptop Get subscription Join tech groups online Ask questions Visit the nl tech rooms Get a tech friend Watch videos on YouTube Get a tech mentor Get a tech training school or trainer Get tech friends Pray to God Believe in yourself Read widely in tech Google your tech questions Pray harder to God for directions and to connect you with the right people.
I was at this cross road many years ago. And the steps above I did them. Where I am, is absolutely a grace of God.
Try the steps I listed above. As surely as surely, it will work for you.
Feel free to pm me. I repeat, you are indeed a rough diamond. You are a great man. Peace.
Sanchez01: Two million might be enough to sustain you for a year and half if you want to pursue a career in tech, only possibly if you are a minimalist and not banking on paying rent from that money. Say feeding, data and a few other things, but definitely not rent.
I switched from telecommunication to tech at 30+ and I do not regret it one bit. You are not old at 30. Some say life begins when you have an awakening, be at 40, 50 or 70. The question is whether or not you are ready to chase your dream.
Answer these questions, not necessarily publicly:
1. What part of tech are you eyeing? 2. Do you have a good laptop (as I know every part of tech requires one)? 3. How cheap or expensive is your rent? If you take out your rent from N2m, what is left? 4. Take out a data budget for a year and see how much is left. 5. Calculate your feeding on a monthly basis, multiply by 18 months and see what is left. 6. You need to set aside some money for emergencies. How much are you willing to spare? 7. How much do you spend on utilities monthly (electricity, waste, gas and water)? 8. If the answer to your number 2 is no, find out if whatever is left can afford a decent laptop that won't freeze or crash while you learn your new tech skill. 9. Finally, can your side hustle run conveniently even when you learn your tech skill?
This isn't exactly bad. If you don't womanize, club and party hard, just learn idea of stocking up monthly. Go minimal. Don't eat out. Always cook.
You could. Or not...
Note that picking up a tech skill doesn't mean you will get a job next month. Depending on the skill and how fast you learn, you might not be able to successfully get a job until you learn the ropes, not fully but decently. I'd say 18 months, if you are a fast learner. Say the basic role in the industry.
PS: DON'T PAY FOR TECH SKILL! If someone has told you to pay to learn, depending on the area, there are tons of resource materials, YouTube channels and resource websites that you can leverage on to up your tech skills.
Thanks alot. Answering the questions, I think I can skim by for 18 months without major issue.
BusinessDream: Yes, take the leap bro. 30? A 55 year old woman recently learned to coding.. even people in their 60s are going back to school. What matter most if your focus and dedication because there 20somethings that can't achieve anything.
Start learning with youtube... and give yourself 2-3 years and you will be good at coding.
Most Telecom orgs now offer FREE youtube data. MTN starts at 11pm to 5am. Just dedicate 1 hour every night to practice while learning.
I used it to learn graphics design at night before I sleep and this is what I designed. After one month, I designed the attached
The best and fastest way to learn is by taking up a project and trying your hands on it. I learned this hack here on nairaland and it helped me master graphics design faster.
I will move to UX ( I learned graphics design to help me master UX design faster) after that and then I will learn HTML, CSS, and Javascript...
It can be done bro... believe me.
Thanks bro. What programme did you design this with?
MartinsD12: You are earning 120k and still an ungrateful human being where as there are some married men that are not even seeing up to 50k already in these present Nigeria
And some are earning 5million. It's not the money bro. If it were, dangote will not be wanting more.
anzaku47: First I want to sympathize with you. You earn 120k monthly which is a bit manageable since you are still single. I studied Agricultural related course and I tell you field staff are always choked up with much work. That your 2 million naira is fine to start up your career as a farmer. Please move out of that place ASAP. I am also a field(supervisor) earning 40k monthly. Imagine a graduate earning 40k with almost 12hrs work daily. If you are in South West I bet you 2 million naira is enough to change your life within a short time. Our bosses usually feel as if we can't do without them. Good luck bro.
Thanks boss. Although my passion is not in agriculture, I know I can do fairly well if I invest in agriculture but my sentiment and why I can't delve into it with the 2m is:
1. Risk 1:: kidnapping is the order of the day, especially farmers in secluded location. I survived kidnapping and luckily escaped being shot at too, twice within the last 3 months. So I know first hand.
2. Risk 2::. As it is now, agriculture is more volatile than crypto and forex now. With two million you can do 1k broiler this month and two months after you might need 2.5 million for you to the same 1k broiler. So if you don't have ready made fund. Agriculture is not for the feeble minds.
3. Risk 3: the unknown. Bad spp of birds, bad hstchery, disease outbreak etc. Leading to unnecessary cost and profit loss.
1sherlockHolmes: op u just want to make me depressed oo at 27 i dont have shishi nd i no get any job all my mates are prospering while im getting poorer thank god for your life mr op
Bro I just gave you a 3 solid years head start. Do something bout it.
oshaosha2014: Continue with your job. Honestly, you are doing well. Save up to 10million naira at this momentum and research and move into a small business.
10 million?? I will most likely grow grey hair first. A larger chunk of the money was made from side hustle, not from my main job. And the side hustle is no more profitable for now, so I might be stock at this junction for awhile
qwertyboss: Just thank God and move on, Am 30 without job not to talk of wife... Just thank God you don't have depression Have been struggling with injury sustained in an accident while searching for job for 2years now. I don't even have what to fund my medication but I smile and move, hoping I don't wake up the next morning... Guy sharperly thank God and adjust your life to current situation...
Sorry bro. You going thru alot but it will pass. It just a phase, just it is with everybody.
bepositive11: Lots of great comments already. Just want to say make sure that you believe in yourself first
In fact, first of all, what are your strengths and weaknesses? To thrive in tech, you need to be a very good problem solver and creative thinker
You can start at any age, as long as you are a fast learner and dedicated, and your strengths align with tech
You can also test some programming tutorials to see if you like it
As for your current situation, you have no one to blame but yourself. Take responsibility and work towards improving your situation. Whether that means getting a new job or starting a new career or business
Don't forget to think about your future plans. If you want to start a family soon, you'll be at a great disadvantage by starting from scratch it tech. It will take time for you to establish yourself and you may face some discrimination based on your older age. Your age mates would be far ahead than you in the tech industry and your tech boss may end up being someone younger than you. Just some other things to keep in mind
Thank you. the cons concerning the age is worrisome, but I'm not necessarily looking to start a family soon.
I know I have got the flair for it, but as for my strength, I really don't know how to judge that. I have learned html, css, and php while I was serving as a youth corper and I think I did fairly well considering i learned it under a year. But then, people do learn it in far shorter time.
dostr4: Betterprospect you can keep working on your job for now , look at learning digital marketing and affiliate marking ,also take time to write down events per day, everyday including mastering time management , branch out alittle , seek new friends with much fresh ideas & dont forget to love yourself also. you will be well , Cheers
Kobicove: You came here to ask for opinions on career change then suddenly veered off and started giving out details about how much money you have saved...how does that information even concern us?
In my experience once people start volunteering private information about their finances in a public forum it's usually because they want to use it as bait
It's well bro. Let's agree to disagree. If you are in my shoes and need to make this decision, would you not consider how much amount you had at hand? If so, if you need to seek pples advice, wouldn't you let them know what you have at hand so they can have a better picture of the scenerio?
Ishilove: There is something seriously wrong with you.
Boss, the key word there is "prime" which I may have misused. What I meant was, age 20-25 would have been the best time. At 20-25 I had no responsibility or much of societal pressure to fulfil. But at 30, I ve got siblings, have got aged parents, have got other obligations.
Ken4ward: I’ll share a bit of myself. I had a career in arts (POP and sculptural work) at the age of 29. I was so sure I’m not fulfilled, and based on my future goal I was so sure I won’t achieve my plans being in that career.
So I sat myself, and draft out what exactly I want as a career. Future decisions shouldn’t be made by instincts, you need prayers. God instructed me to go study an IT course. My final pick was in the IT (Software Development). So, I went to NIIT. After that, my first job was to manage a computer center, and I was paid N100 per day.
So far, my career in the IT has brought great transformation to my life and spans about 13 years. I presently work with a company in Europe, the company fully sponsored my relocation. But there are several things I sacrificed. So it’s all about what’s more important to you. It’s either to suffer the pain of discipline now and switch your career to have the future you want or suffer the pain of regret in the future. The ball is in your court.
Thank you so very much, this is encouraging . Id appreciate if you can sort of guide me in this journey. Can I pm you, to maybe talk more ?
Lexusgs430: Marriage is not a licence, to happiness............
You call yourself old at 30 ?? What would you say, when you turn 60..............
If you saved those fund's, from your current employer's wage .......... We don't all like our bosses, but we stick it ..........
Thanks boss. One of the reason why I think I could be more is the fact that I only saved ¼ of the 2 million from my work. The remaining were from side works and hustle.
gerizzim: Your worries: 1. You are 30yrs 2. Unmarried 3. Unhappy on your job 4. You want to have a career change
If diz are ur concerns, wat abt a female friend that I know that is 47years old, unmarried , doesn't have a job dt also implies there is no career change for my jobless female friend.
The truth is dis,ur not a grateful person. you are far beta off Dan millions of Nigerians within ur age bracket. Go and swap position with the 29yrs old guy living wit his 60yrs old father doin teaching job dt earns possibly less Dan 40k let him tell you the meaning of wt it means not to be happy.
I'm grateful. Look at it this way. Im in the same dilemma as that 29 yrs you describe up there. We simply just want more. Millions of Africans are far below him too, but guess what, he yearn for more doesn't he?
sukkot: 2 milion naira is tiny money ? thats like 4000 dollars. OP is trolling
Lols bro. Trolling? If you are not there yet, I pray you get there a supercede. It's not what it's really is... Even billionaires yarn for more, ask dangote
prophetic69: At least your own better you get job...most graduate dey over 30yrs no job talk more of savings and settling down....baba get your priorities right joe.
Baba I no dey ungrateful bro.. Na everybody get where the shoe dey pain am. Even billionaires
ACRI: If possible work with the company for a little while and keep expanding the side business and also increase your savings
You are not doing badly with the 2M you tired. When you have saved some little more , move on with your life. You deserve to be happy. And its still good you re still single....less responsibilities.
Trust me you ll be fine when you leave, I have done so before though it was hard at first but don't let that place toy with your mental health.
IamDavid: Convert your 2M to dolls first. I don't have any serious advice like dat but just know that tech is getting saturated already. You have to be really skilled to edge others now. No matter what you think, you're actually doing better than some others
Thanks. That's something worth thinking about. I know I am doing better than some. But the thought of regrets or miserable later on if I dont do this is getting in my head.
Why is it that a thread that was opened by an account that was created today made it to front page
This story sounds more to me like this person is trying to use reverse psychology so that gullible people will start contacting him to do business with him which would provide an opportunity for him to make some gains (I don't want to use the word "scam" at this stage)
Lols, how people reason this way eludes me. TRY TO KEEP AN OPEN MIND. the whole world is not out to get you. I'm trying to make a career change and somehow you think someone will invest in my career change, or in a business I said I don't like?
christejames: Bro, don't get yourself overly worked up because of some societal pressure...
Of all the problems you listed, let marriage be the last one on your mind. If the environment you are working has become too toxic for you and you had been rendering your services efficiently to the growth of the company, don't you think if you transfer that energy into your own private business that is generating about 50k monthly will make you an employer that would even pay his workers about the same amount as salary in the future?
Well, if it's me, knowing that where I work is no longer comfortable and I already have side hussle, I will just be working with the mindset to take the company by surprise when I will finally leave them, because I won't stay with them forever.
My thoughts exactly. I dont see marriage as a problem for now, I stated it here as a criteria to consider while making my decision of quitting and starting from ground zero up.
Michealupdate43: Those that have cap do not have heads, those that have heads do not have caps( irony of life,).
How can you can 2milion in this economy small. You say you work 12 hours a day, meaning you still have a few hours in the day to work on starting up something for yourself.
Stop feeling sorry and get started with something already, 30 years is not the end of life.
