My friend, where are you from? Is this how you use to do? These are all lies you wrote here...crass lies! Kai! Bicourtney did nothing on that highway, until Jonathan (by popular demand) revoked the concession and funded its rehabilitation.[s] Work was in top-gear on that axis as well as the Benin-Ore-Shagamu sector, which would have long been concluded if not for the change in government and PMB's unilateral suspension of work. Even Fashola acknowledged this progress when he newly came on board, praising GEJ as having done the most on the country's road networks in the last 20 or so years. Make you no dey lie like dis now[/s]!
you lied there! Jonathan awarded the contract in 2012, but no work was done on the road until he started campaign for re-election. he used the roads to campaign, he refused to pay for the contract and many many more. The contractors abandoned the road after Jonathan lost election because they were not paid. Fashola with the help of Osibanjo compelled them to continue the work as paid them arrears and the work has long continue.

The contract wasn't awarded by Obasanjo; he had left govt before 2009. I'm not a fan of the Babalakin guy, but think about it, why would he refuse to repair "even a hundred metres of the road" for four years, and for no reason. He practically had to source for greater percentage of funding, since it was a PPP, and most Nigerian financial houses were willing to yield. Okay, GEJ awarded the contract to Julius Berger and RCC in 2012: what did they acheive in 3years? Egungun be kiavul
very true, Jonathan awarded the road to the two companies, RCC and Julius Berger but they did nothing until January 2015 when the campaign to be elected was getting hot and hotter

The management of Bi-courtney Nigeria Limited has asked the Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, to return its concession to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which was revoked by the previous administration.

A statement on Monday by the company said it felt vindicated by Fashola’s comment on a national television station on Monday that government’s failure to honour contracts impacted negatively on infrastructural development.

The company after commending Fashola for the sincerity, urged him to take the next right step by returning its rights.

The statement read, “Mr. Fashola was responding to questions on whether the government is still open to concessions and public private partnership as a way of bridging the gap between the infrastructure deficit in the country and government funding, which is inadequate and also if he will be revisiting the power privatisation programme. The minister also said the way successive governments jettisoned contracts had done a great disservice to Nigeria.

“Bi-courtney, which is a pioneer infrastructure company in Nigeria was awarded a build, operate and transfer contract to build the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, but the contract was cancelled by the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.

“The company has insisted that the cancellation is illegal and that the Federal Government and the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, need to respect the law and allow Bi-courtney complete its contract.

“The spokesman for Bi-courtney, Mr Akeem Alaaya, says he hopes the minister will take the next logical step and hand back the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to Bi-courtney, whose concession was illegally revoked. The money the government is now expending on the road, he added, can be used on projects that can attract private sector funds.”

The legal advisor to Bi-courtney, Mr. Tola Oshobi, according to the statement, said the infrastructural development of Nigeria had been slowed down tremendously by government’s inability to understand that it was only through public private partnerships that the country would get the rapid development it deserved.

Sorry sir, your company did not perform at all on that road, which is why it was revoked, you had the contracts for years but did nothing! Berger and Rcc got the contract and has since, been working. I for one, i will never be in support of its revocation. meanwhile, if at all they revoke it, will you refund all money spent? what will you expect from RCC and Berger??

This particular tenure ship law which passed through the council was proposed in 2011 by some mischievous people but met major resistance from the Federal government under GEJ and some other individuals in Government then ,it was taken to court and it was swept under the carpet immediately then in 2011 and never saw the light of the day, that's why most people are just hearing about it now, ,now come 2016 ,the law is revisited, implemented and became effective, October 2016. So what changed all the way from 2011 to 2016 that there was sudden need to revisit and implement it? Lets stop telling lies to justify this.

Most times when we walk into big malls, boutiques, supermarkets, we never question their prices. We pay exactly what we see on the price tags and even hand out tips to the staff.

But the moment we are out of these shops and want to buy banana, our bargaining game gets off to the roof.

Poor widow with 12 hungry children at home tells you banana is N100. She even takes out her time to explain how difficult it was for her to even buy it, how the economy is so tough. But we insist that if it's not N50, we are not paying.

Some of us even step back into our cars and make to drive away. But because 'half bread is better than chin chin', this woman is forced to call you back and sell to you at little or no gain.

In her heart, she cries, she's worried about how she'll survive with her children. She silently reassures herself that 'It's well. God will definitely provide.''

While you happily chop the luscious banana. Take some seconds out and think about this.

I'm always moved to tears when I see people who genuinely and helplessly hawk petty goods to feed and survive for that day, especially women and children.

Please don't bargain hard with small vendors like this. They do business not to buy designer bags, trendy phones and watches, Gucci shoes and designer clothes but to LIVE and EAT for that day and the children share the remaining money to take to school the next day (that's if there's any left).

Progressive01:
I'd skip the pleasantries and get right to the point of this.

Nigeria is indeed a country of boundless absurdities, most of which were "invented" and found their way to the fore just after the exit of PDP which "ruled" the country for sixteen years uninterrupted.

The oddity in the attitude of the average political commentator we see today, especially from those who pitched their tent with PDP in the last election, stem more from the fact they are predominantly Christians and can't seem to stomach the thought of being led by a Muslim.

Their party leadership spared no expense in sowing the seed of religious intolerance in the hearts of Nigerians, through their dogged sponsorship of inflammable propaganda, the fruits of which we are reaping today in no small measure.

Yesterday, it was reported the Central Bank will be subsidising the dollar for intending Hajj pilgrims, and as expected, mixed, mostly negative, reactions have trailed the announcement and as expected, those people who've sworn to ensure the president is seen by all as a religious bigot have seized the opportunity to spread their propaganda throughout print and electronic media.

Time and again, we have seen that no sooner do they launch the attacks than history comes to the rescue of Mr President.

One could fault the President on a whole lot of fronts, why not. He's a mare mortal and as such must have his own imperfections. But one thing you certainly can't call the president is "religious bigot".

Here are but a few events in the past that shed light on exactly who the religious bigot is between mr President and his accusers:

1. FG Earmarks $11million for Christian pilgrims.

This was done less than a year ago. An interesting part is that the maximum amount entitled to each pilgrim is the same as what we have today- $1000 and at a lower rate of N160/dollar since the naira had more value then as opposed of N197/dollar today!!

The economy wasn't really faring any better then.

Pray tell, where were the voices of these later day activists/economists when this happened??!!

2. Buhari Cancels Govt Delegation to Hajj

Again, to show his "extreme love for Muslims and his disdain for Christians", mr President shelved plans to send a FG delegation to Hajj 2015. We didn't see "Christians" take over cyberspace to "condemn" this extreme demonstration of bigotry by the president.

Today, he's done for Muslims what he did for Christians and social media has literally been set on fire!!

3. FG Approves 65% Tax Waiver For Christian Pilgrims.

This was done earlier this year under this grim economic atmosphere, yet we never heard as much as a whistle from nobody!!

These and many more instances where the FG under President M. Buhari intervened to make things a lot easier for Christian pilgrims never became major talking points- but as soon as anything is done by the president that seem to favour Muslims, who are no less citizens of this country than Christians, it becomes a huge problem- no thanks to religious bigots who think themselves Christians!

I have been going to church since I was 3 and been listening to pastors, reverend, bishops, etc, preach the word- never a day have I heard any of them extol hate or bigotry as a virtue! Nowhere in the Bible have I read such (not that I always read the bible anyway).

Where then did these Nigerian "christians" propagating this brand of "christianity" where Muslims MUST be hated get their doctrine- PDP constitution??

Myself and many other well meaning Nigerians have been advocating that government completely hands of sponsorship of pilgrimage. Man's relationship with God is their private business and must be treated as such. If one chooses to visit Mecca or Jerusalem or the Bohemian Groove or Okija Shrine to commune with their God, let them sort their expenses out themselves!! If they can't bear the cost, they should sit asses at home and pray- God is omnipresent and can hear them from wherever whenever.

PDP "apologised" for their toxic brand of politics the other day- it would do Nigeria a whole lot of good if the party called her members and supporters to order as that "apology" appears not to have registered on their minds. Heating up the polity with religion does no one no good, certainly not a party that seeks to return to the center in 3years time.

Had the constituent units of the current governing party conducted themselves in this manner when they were the major opposition parties, imagine what the country would have looked like today.

When you set the entire country ablaze, when then would be left to rule over afterwards, her ashes??

Let a word be enough for the wise.

Thank you.
...
are you trying to cause religious crisis with this?

First, it is hypocritical to lament about the amount of money being lost because of the subsidy for Hajj pilgrims even though you kept quiet when the Christian pilgrims were also subsidised by the same government last year.

But having said that, this government campaigned that they will stop wastages. What better/bigger example of wastage can you think of than subsidizing pilgrimage - be it muslims or christians. The money being used for this purpose will go a long way in solving some of our pressing needs.

We should always talk and speak out when the government does something wrong. It is very silly and childish (to say the least) when you speak only when it favour you or while trying to pull down the other. It reminds me of Jibrin and Dogara.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has issued a circular instructing commercial banks to sell dollars to Pilgrims going to the Hajj at an exchange rate of N197.

The Central Bank explains that the sale of the forex will be funneled through commercial banks who are then mandated to sell to pilgrims at N197. Pilgrims are expected to purchase a minimum of $750 and a maximum of $1000 per pilgrim.

The circular also reveals there are a total of 65,197 Pilgrims, thus the CBN will sell as much as $65,197,000 assuming every Pilgrim buys as much as $1000 each.

Nigeria’s official exchange rate closed at about N315 which suggest that this sale could cost Nigerian tax payers about N7, 693, 246,000 in exchange rate loss (based on 315 -197=118).

This is not the first time the Central Bank is selling dollars to Pilgrims at a subsidized rate. Last August it also sold dollars at N160 at a time when the official exchange rate was about N197. Only that this time, the disparity is wider.

The implication for Nigerian tax payers is that the government is now incurring this sort of expense at a time when the economy is likely in a recession and millions are finding it hard to feed themselves. It is also at a time where the Nigerian government is running cap in hand begging foreign investors to invest in Nigeria so that we can boost our external reserves.

It also calls to question suspicions that government officials may be getting travel allowances at a different exchange rate from what is obtainable at the official interbank market.

The Central Bank of Nigeria floated the Naira on the 20th of June 2016 following a year-long policy of holding the exchange rate at a fixed rate of about N197/$1. Since floating the naira, the exchange rate has depreciated by as much 60% at the interbank and over 100% at the parallel market. The dollar closed at about N400 at the parallel market on Thursday.
