10 SECURITY RELATED NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY 27 MAY, 2019.

1. MILITARY LOSES N4.8BN WEAPONS IN NORTH-EAST SINCE JANUARY.
The Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Army, which are two active forces in the counter-insurgency war in the North-East, have lost over N4.8bn in weaponry in the region between January and May, 2019. This sum is obtained from estimates of the crashed NAF Mi-35M helicopter, gun trucks, machine guns and other weapons stolen from army bases, according to military sources. On January 2, the air force’s Mi-35M attack helicopter crashed in the North-East while on a Boko Haram interdiction mission, killing five crew members comprising two pilots and three NAF personnel in Damasak, Borno State. According to a document, Mi-35M orders and deliveries, the crashed helicopter is estimated at over $12million or N4.6bn. The records noted that Nigeria placed a contract for six Mi-35M combat helicopters in August 2014 and received the first batch of two helicopters in December 2016. The second batch of two helicopters was delivered in April 2018. But one of them crashed in Damasak on January 2nd. The records noted, “The Brazilian Air Force signed a $150m contract with Rosoboron export for 12 Mi-35M helicopters in November 2008. The first three helicopters were delivered in December 2009.

2. NIGERIAN ARMY DENIES KILLING OF 25 SOLDIERS IN BORNO.
The Nigerian Army has denied media reports that 25 soldiers were killed in an attack coordinated by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno. The Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, made the denial in a Short Message (SMS) in Maiduguri on Sunday. Some reports claimed 25 soldiers were killed on Saturday when the insurgents attacked a military convoy evacuating civilians on Damboa-Biu Road. Musa dismissed the report as “rumour and fake”. “Contrary to rumour and fake news circulating, there was no attack on any of our troops’ locations at Sabon Gari or any other locations in Borno State. “I have spoken with the Special Force Commander in Damboa and he confirmed to me that there was nothing of such in Damboa or any of his locations as at Friday) and Saturday,” he said. (NAN)

3. NAF DESTROYS BANDITS CAMP AT DOUMBOUROU FOREST, ZAMFARA.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says the Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI has destroyed bandits’ camp and neutralised dozens of bandits in airstrikes it conducted at Doumbourou Forest in Zamfara. Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who announced this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said the operation was conducted on Saturday. Daramola said the NAF, working in consonance with other security agencies, would sustain its operations to flush the bandits out of the north west of the country.

4. AIR FORCE INFLICTS HEAVY CASUALTIES ON ISWAP TERRORISTS IN BORNO.
THE Nigerian Air Force, Saturday morning, said it inflicted hearvy casualties on terrorists of Islamic State of West Africa,ISWAP extraction in Borno State, yesterday, Friday. The Air Force said the several of the terrorists were killed just as their structures and logistics were destroyed during the air raid at Tumbun Hamma,in the northern part of the state. The service,in a statement by its spokesman,Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said the attack was preceded by series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions which confirmed heavy presence of terrorists in several structures, along with their logistics items, spread across the small settlement. The statement read in full:”The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole, has inflicted heavy casualties on Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP) elements in devastating air strikes conducted at Tumbun Hamma on the fringes of Lake Chad yesterday, 24 May 2019.

5. SECRET MANUAL OF BOKO HARAM GUERRILLAS.
If one ever wonders how Boko Haram and ISWAP guerrillas pick soft targets and avoid head-on clashes with the gallant Nigerian soldiers, a hitherto secret manual of war by the terrorist group has shed some light. The manual suggests the terrorists tactics is deliberate: they are fighting according to instructions from Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the group’s elusive leader. Reuters quoting Islamic State al-Naba online newspaper, said Baghdadi has encouraged his followers to adopt guerrilla tactics and published detailed instructions on how to carry out hit-and-run operations. According to the report, the guidelines make clear the group is adopting it as standard operating procedure, especially as they have lost territories in all their theatres of war, in Iraq and Syria and also in North East Nigeria, where a degraded Boko Haram metamorphosed into ISWAP. The operating procedure in a nutshell is a style of fighting that avoids direct confrontation and that seeks to weaken the state military by attrition. In a rare video published by IS’s Al Furqan network in April, the group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi encouraged followers to fight on and weaken the enemy by attrition, stressing that waging war is more important than winning. Hassan Abu Hanieh, a Jordanian expert on Islamists, said IS has used guerrilla tactics to temporarily seize towns in order to attract media coverage but also as part of a new strategic approach.

NAF DEGRADES BOKO HARAM MEETING VENUE AT BULA KOREGE IN BORNO STATE

The Air Task Force (ATF) for Operation LAFIYA DOLE has decimated a location at Bula Korege on the fringes of Sambisa Forest in Borno State, being used by Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) as a meeting venue. The attack was conducted on 25 May 2019 following successive days of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, coupled with Human Intelligence reports, that established that some structures within the settlement were being used as a rendezvous by the BHTs from where they assemble to launch attacks against own troops and innocent civilians. Accordingly, the ATF detailed a fighter aircraft to attack the hideout, scoring hits within the target area leading to significant degrading of the BHT structures. Several BHTs were also killed as a result of the strikes.

The NAF, operating in concert with surface forces, will sustain its operations to completely degrade the terrorists in the Northeast.
